Desde os Jogos Olímpicos de 2016, a zona portuária do Rio de Janeiro (Brasil) assumiu o papel de uma nova centralidade na dinâmica urbana da cidade, ressaltada pelo uso turístico promovido pelo projeto de requalificação urbana pelo qual a região passou. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar o papel que a arte pública e o mobiliário urbano exerceram nas transformações realizadas nos espaços públicos contemplados pelo Projeto Porto Maravilha através de revisão de literatura, análise de documentos oficiais do projeto e visitas a campo. Verificou-se que a intervenção urbana se pautou em novas conexões de pedestres estabelecidas por entre o passeio público reformado, novos marcos arquitetônicos e nova rede de infraestrutura que, em conjunto, criaram conexões físicas e simbólicas do indivíduo com o espaço urbano, promovendo a (re)construção da identidade da região e, portanto, seu poder de centralidade.

Islamic colored glass windows (qamarīyāt) have long been disregarded by scholarship despite their popularity with nineteenth-century travelers. Their vibrant light and bright colors have sparked the enthusiasm of artists, architects, and collectors who depicted, recreated, and displayed this fragile art form. By focusing on the British architect James William Wild, the eccentric traveler and art collector Karl von Urach, and the iconic American artist Louis Comfort Tiffany, this contribution will highlight the artistic and cultural significance of qamarīyāt as an expression of the intense colors of the East.

Nature uses peptide aggregates as soft materials for electron transfer over long distances. These reactions occur in a multistep hopping reaction with various functional groups as relay stations that are located in the side chain and in the backbone of the peptides.

This short historical review describes the work of the Giese group on radicals and radical ions that has led to the award of the Paracelsus prize in 2012.

Electron transfer (ET) through peptides and proteins is a key biochemical process, which involves radicals and radical ions as reactive intermediates. We have developed an assay that allows us to study this fundamental chemical reaction.

The interdisciplinary projects in bioinorganic and bioorganic chemistry of the Department of Chemistry, University of Basel led to the preparation of new systems that mimic biologically important processes and to the discovery of compounds from natural sources which are very promising with respect to medical applications. The advances in these areas are reported here.

The EPR is a third-generation pressurized water reactor (PWR). Its development was started in 1992 by Framatome and Siemens within a Franco-German partnership. Since 2001 this work has been continued by Framatome ANP, which was formed when the two companies merged their nuclear businesses. The French company AREVA, world market leader in nuclear technology, holds a 66% share in Framatome ANP, with Siemens owning 34%. From the very start, development of the EPR was focused on improving plant safety and economics even further. The new reactor development was jointly financed together with the leading power utilities of both countries. The first steps towards realization of an EPR nuclear power plant were taken at Olkiluoto, Finland in 2004 [1][2], consisting of initial preparation of the construction site. By mid-February 2005 the local municipality – Eurajoki – had issued a construction permit, and the Finnish Government a construction license pursuant to the Finnish Nuclear Energy Act. This had been preceded by a preliminary safety assessment prepared by the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) for the Finnish Ministry of Trade and Industry in which STUK verified that it did not see any safety-related issues opposing issuance of the nuclear construction license. STUK emphasized that the evolutionary design of the EPR had been further improved by AREVA compared to the previous product lines. Concreting work began this spring and the unit will start commercial operation in 2009. Construction of an EPR has also been given the political go-ahead in France. According to the utility Electricité de France (EDF) the new reactor will be built as a forerunner of a later series at the site of Flamanville in Normandy. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2007. An EPR nuclear power plant has a rated electric capacity of around 1600 MW, depending on specific site conditions. Being the product of intense bilateral cooperation the EPR combines the technological accomplishments of the world's two leading PWR product lines – France's N4 and Germany's Konvoi. At the same time it incorporates a new class of safety: its highly advanced safety systems represent a further enhancement of the high safety level already provided by nuclear plants currently in operation in Germany and France. To attain the specified safety goals, measures have been taken to further reduce the probability of occurrence of core damage and to also ensure that all consequences of a (hypothetical) accident involving core melt remain restricted to the plant itself. The EPR has additionally made great progress in terms of low power generating costs, conservation of natural resources, and minimization of waste volumes. From the viewpoint of the European nuclear community, it therefore demonstrates nuclear energy's excellent prospects for the future as an economical option for carbondioxide-free base-load power generation in our liberalized power markets.

Radicals have important functions in the enzymatic synthesis of deoxyribonucleotides and their destruction by antibiotics. The chemical basis for these reactions is that radicals dramatically speed up ionic reactions. Nature has developed methods to generate these radicals under mild conditions in water as solvent. The 'catalytic' effect of these reactive intermediates is described.

Electron transport through DNA occurs over very long distances (100 Å and more). The process follows a hopping mechanism and depends upon the DNA sequence. The efficiency of the charge transport is only slightly distance dependent because in most cases the H2O trapping of the charge is slower than the electron transfer. These findings show the potential of substituted DNAs as new materials for nanoelectronics in the future.

4?-Acylated thymidine triphosphates 1 have been synthesized and tested as substrates for DNA polymerases and reverse transcriptases. The 4?-benzoylated thymidine 1d was selectively acting as a chain terminator for the DNA synthesis catalyzed by retroviral RT. No incorporation of 1d was observed when DNA polymerases were used. The selective targeting of the action performed by retroviral enzymes is a requirement for an effective antiviral agent with a minimum of toxicity.

Amino acids in dipeptides which are substituted at the N-atom by a benzoylalkyl group can be selectively photocyclized via a triplet biradical. With valine as amino acid the cyclization leads mainly to one product out of eight possible isomers.
