À travers l’exemple du recyclage artisanal de batteries au plomb dans des ateliers en « bout de champ » en Inde, cet article donne à voir l’intérêt d’une approche interdisciplinaire pour appréhender les multiples dimensions politiques, techniques et environnementales de l’exploitation de la mine urbaine. Le recours aux sciences humaines et sociales (anthropologie des techniques, géographie sociale), aux sciences de l’ingénieur (génie des procédés) et aux géosciences (géophysique, géochimie) permet ainsi de reconstituer des chaînes logistiques inversées en suivant de proche en proche les flux matériels du plomb ; des chaînes opératoires en décomposant l’ensemble des opérations efficaces sur la matière dans les ateliers et les usines ; des chaînes de contaminations en prélevant des échantillons de sols aux abords des lieux de production. Ce contraste épistémique entre sciences physiques et sciences humaines et sociales permet ainsi de mieux saisir les enjeux induits par la circulation et la transformation des matières récupérées, pour questionner in fine les possibilités de faire science autrement. Using the example of the traditional recycling of lead batteries in “backyard” workshops in India, this article demonstrates the value of an interdisciplinary approach to ascertain the many political, technical and environmental dimensions of the operation of urban mines. The use of human and social sciences (anthropology of techniques, social geography), engineering sciences (process engineering) and geosciences (geophysics, geochemistry) makes it possible to track reverse logistics chains by following the material flow of lead from one step to the next; operations chains by breaking down all the effective operations on the material in workshops and factories; and contamination chains by taking soil samples in the vicinity of production sites. This epistemic contrast between the physical sciences and the humanities and social sciences enables us to better understand the issues involved in the circulation and transformation of recovered materials, and to examine the possibilities of doing science differently.

Au cours des dernières décennies, les observations de glace de glacier enfouie exposée dans les falaises côtières et les glissements de terrain causés par le dégel du pergélisol arctique démontrent que des quantités importantes de glace de glacier ont survécu à la déglaciation et sont toujours préservées dans le pergélisol. Le premier volet de cette étude visait à caractériser des expositions de la glace massive observée à l’île Bylot, au Nunavut, afin de connaitre l’origine de la glace. Puisque la glace de glacier enfouie peut jouer un rôle important dans l’évolution des paysages périglaciaires, cette thèse s’intéresse également au rôle joué par la glace de glacier enfouie dans l'initiation et l’évolution de lacs de thermokarst. Nos résultats démontrent que le pergélisol de l'île Bylot contient des restes de glace de glacier du Pléistocène qui ont survécu aux dernières déglaciations. Dans la vallée Qarlikturvik, des masses de glace intraglaciaire (dérivée du névé) sont associées à un courant de glace de l’inlandsis laurentidien qui recouvrait une partie de la plaine sud de l’île vers la fin du Pléistocène. Cette masse de glace formait une zone de convergence avec les glaciers alpins locaux s'écoulant de la calotte glaciaire centrée sur les monts Byam Martin. Sur l’un des plateaux bordant la vallée Qarlikturvik, une masse de glace de glacier enfouie est associée à la partie basale d'un glacier dont l’âge minimal est estimé à environ 0.77 Ma, mais pourrait être aussi vieux que 2.6 Ma. En raison de sa localisation, à environ 500 m d’altitude, la glace proviendrait vraisemblablement d’une avancée glaciaire régionale et pourrait être associée à la Glaciation de Baffin, soit la plus vieille avancée glaciaire régionale reconnue sur l'île Bylot. De plus, cette glace représente le plus vieux reste de glacier connu en Amérique du Nord et l’une des premières indications de glaciations dans l’est de l’Arctique canadien. La persistance et la fonte tardive de ces épaisses couches de glace de glacier datant du Pléistocène ont eu des effets importants sur le paysage de l'île Bylot, notamment sur les lacs. En effet, nos résultats démontrent que l'initiation des lacs profonds (> 5 m) est liée à la fonte de la glace de glacier enfouie. Ces lacs de thermokarst glaciaire continueront d’évoluer dans un contexte périglaciaire par la fonte de la glace intrasédimentaire (p. ex., glace de ségrégation) et des coins de glace formés ultérieurement dans les sédiments encaissants lors de l’aggradation du pergélisol suivant le retrait glaciaire. Alors qu’une grande partie des paysages arctiques est encore fortement déterminée par leur héritage glaciaire, la fonte de ces masses de glace aura un impact important sur la dynamique des géosystèmes et écosystèmes arctiques., Over the past decades, observations of buried glacier ice exposed in coastal bluffs and headwalls of retrogressive thaw slumps of the Arctic have indicated that considerable amounts of late Pleistocene glacier ice survived the deglaciation and are still preserved in permafrost. The first phase of this project aimed to characterize two exposures of massive ice observed on Bylot Island (Nunavut) to infer their origins. Since buried glacier ice can play a significant role in reshaping periglacial landscapes, this study also investigates the initiation and development of thermokarst lakes in a tundra valley in response to the melting of buried glacier ice. Our results show that the permafrost of Bylot Island contains remnants of Pleistocene glacier ice that survived the past deglaciations. In the Qarlikturvik valley, bodies of englacial ice (firn-derived) originated from an ice stream flowing from the Laurentide Ice Sheet, which covered part of the southern plain of the island towards the end of the Pleistocene. These glacier ice bodies formed a convergence zone with local alpine glaciers flowing from the ice cap centred over the Byam Martin Mountains. On the edge of a flat plateau bordering the Qarlikturvik Valley, a buried glacier ice body is associated with the basal part of a glacier whose minimum age is estimated at 0.77 Ma, but could be as old as 2.6 Ma. Due to its location on a 500-m a.s.l. plateau, the ice likely originates from a regional glacial advance and could be associated with the Baffin Glaciation, which is the oldest known glaciation on Bylot Island. In addition, this buried glacier ice represents the oldest glacier ice preserved in ice-free Arctic landscapes, and the earliest evidence of a Pleistocene glaciation in the eastern Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The persistence and delayed melting of these thick beds of buried Pleistocene glacier ice had wide-ranging effects on the landscape of Bylot Island. Our results suggest that the initiation of deeper thermokarst lakes (> 5 m) was triggered by the melting of buried glacier ice in our study area, while shallow thermokarst lakes were triggered from the melting of intrasedimental ice and ice wedges. These glacial thermokarst lakes will continue to evolve in a periglacial context through the melting of intrasedimental ice (e.g. segregation ice) and ice wedges subsequently formed in the surrounding sediments during permafrost aggradation following the glacial retreat. As most of the glaciated Arctic landscapes are still strongly determined by their glacial legacy, the melting of these large ice bodies will have significant impacts on Arctic ecosystems and geosystems.

Riparian wetlands are environments of high ecological interest as biodiversity reactors, natural river purifiers and carbon sinks. Among the numerous various types of wetlands, peatlands are sensitive environnments that rely on the brittle balance between high primary production and waterlogging conditions. Seasonal water table fluctuations can initiate major changes in their structure. The objective of this thesis is to understand the hydrological processes of these specific environments, at the site scale, and to seize how they affect the biogeochemical cycles that take place within the peat body.The method developped in this work to adress this issue is multidisciplinary: high frequency water table monitoring (10min) using about 10 observation wells distributed over the 4,6ha of the studied wetland, bimonthly groundwater sampling within this piezometer network for major ions and water and sulfate stable isotopes analyses, geophysical investigations using the electrical resistivity tomography method (ERT), analyses of undisturbed soil samples, and hydrological modelling using the numerical tool HydroGeoSphere (HGS). The coupling of all these methods led to understand the processes at the origin of the observed water table dynamics: they are the consequences of the vegetation cycles, with intensive growth from June to October, and are controlled by the lateral flow, in particular that of the river, which is boosted by a high permeable surface layer. These dynamics are behind the undergoing pedological changes observed in soil samples from the periodically unsaturated zone by stimulating the organic matter biodegradation, increasing at the same time the groundwater mineralization, and lead to a bi-layer system with different properties. Water levels at maximum drawdown thus act as a pedological, hydrological and geochemical boundary within the peat body.; Les zones humides ripariennes sont des environnements au potentiel écologique important que ce soit dans le maintien de la biodiversité, de la qualité des cours d'eau qui les longent ou encore comme réservoirs de carbone. Parmi la typologie de ces environnements très diversifiés, les tourbières sont des milieux fragiles qui reposent sur l'équilibre entre conditions hydrologiques saturées en eau et production primaire importante. Des variations de niveaux d'eau répétées peuvent être à l'origine de leur transformation. L'objectif principal de cette thèse est de comprendre le fonctionnement hydrologique de ce type d'environnement particulier, à l'échelle d'un site pilote présentant de fortes variations piézométriques saisonnières, et d'en comprendre les implications sur les cycles biogéochimiques.L'approche développée dans ce travail pour répondre à cette problématique est multidisciplinaire : suivi piézométrique à haute fréquence (10min) sur un réseau constitué d'une dizaine de puits d'observation installés de façon distribuée sur les 4,6ha de la zone humide, campagnes de prélèvements géochimiques bimestrielles sur ces ouvrages pour analyse des ions majeurs, des isotopes stables de l'eau et des sulfates, prospections géophysiques par tomographie de résistivité électrique, analyse d'échantillons non-remaniés issus de carottages, et enfin modélisation hydrologique sur un transect 2D à l'aide du code HydroGeoSphere (HGS). Le couplage de ces différentes méthodes a permis de comprendre les processus qui pilotent les dynamiques de nappes observées sur le site : elles ont pour moteur le cycle annuel de croissance intensive de la végétation entre juin et octobre, et sont contrôlées par des apports d'eau latéraux provenant notamment de la rivière et circulant rapidement dans une couche de surface caractérisée par une forte conductivité hydraulique. Ces dynamiques sont à l'origine d'une transformation pédologique de la zone de battement de nappe par la stimulation des processus de dégradation de la matière organique, qui a pour effet l'augmentation de la minéralisation des eaux souterraines, et participe à la distinction de deux horizons aux propriétés très différentes. Les niveaux piézométriques en basses eaux jouent ainsi le rôle de frontière à la fois pédologique, hydrologique et aussi géochimique.

The positioning of the Ardèche river catchments area and its tributaries depends on a whole organized system which follows a long building process in a context of geological and physiographical spatial accommodations.This context cannot be dissociated from the global parameters like erosion, climate variations and eustatic fluctuations generated by continental drift.The development of the gorges de l'Ardèche stems from these fundamental parameters which over time gave its current appearance to the meandering canyon.The Lower Cretaceous limestones have settled as a result of areas made available during the Upper Jurassic.In a hot and humid climate, the progradation of the Urgonian sedimentary systems leads to progressive fillings of accommodations under the constraints of eustatism and the tectonics causing differential subsidence.The structural diagram of the future gorges de l'Ardèche is initiated in this context.The uplift and the progressive emersion of the Lower Cretaceous platform will take place from the Albian-Cenomanian.Starting from the Upper Cretaceous, materials from surrounding seas or weathering deposits coming largely from the Massif Central induce successive subsidences whose tectonosedimentary deformations will interfere with the previously faulted structures.These evolving morphologies favour aerial flows in constant reorganisation at the roof of sedimentary landfills.Water streams, whose circulation direction is oriented N-S to NE-SO, descend from the Massif Central and allow the settling of braided channels and the formation of valleys of various size, under a tropical climate and according to the eustatic variations of the alpine Tethys located to the south.The question here is to understand the distribution and the direction of river circulations during the Upper Cretaceous and Palaeogene as well as in the Lower Oligocene-Miocene, at the beginning of the incision of the Ardèche canyon in the Neogene.A caracterisation protocol carried out by geochemical ICP-AES analysis of Upper Cretaceous and Paleogene samples, referenced on the geological map 889 of Bourg Saint Andéol, makes it possible to compare the geochemical signatures of unpublished sandstone and clay samples, found on the surface and in the caves of the Ardèche karstic plateaus .(Jolivet et al., 2020)., Le positionnement du bassin hydrographique de la rivière Ardèche et de ses affluents dépend de l'ensemble d'un système organisé-organisant qui découle d'un long processus d'édification dans un contexte d'accommodations spatiales géologiques et physiographiques.Ce contexte ne peut être dissocié des paramètres globaux tels que l'érosion, les variations du climat et les fluctuations eustatiques générées par la dérive des continents.L'élaboration des gorges de l'Ardèche découle de ces paramètres fondamentaux qui au cours du temps, lui ont donné son aspect actuel de canyon méandriforme.Les calcaires du Crétacé inférieur s'installent grâce aux espaces disponibles réalisés au Jurassique supérieur.Sous un climat chaud et humide, la progradation des cortèges sédimentaires de l'Urgonien conduit à des remplissages progressifs des accommodations sous les contraintes de l'eustatisme et de la tectonique responsables de subsidences différentielles.C'est dans ce contexte que s'initie le schéma structural des futures gorges de l'Ardèche.Le soulèvement et l'émersion progressive de la plateforme du Crétacé inférieur va avoir lieu dès l'Albien-Cénomanien.A partir du Crétacé supérieur, les matériaux issus des mers environnantes ou des dépôts d'altération provenant en grande partie du Massif Central induisent des subsidences successives dont les déformations tectonosédimentaires vont interférer sur les structures faillées antérieures.Ces morphologies évolutives favorisent des écoulements aériens en constante réorganisation au toit des décharges sédimentaires. Les cours d'eau, dont le sens de circulation est orienté N-S à NE-SO, descendent du Massif Central et permettent l'établissement de chenaux anastomosés et la formation de vallées de dimensions variées sous climat tropical et selon les fluctuations eustatiques de la Téthys alpine située au sud.La question ici est de comprendre la répartition et la direction des circulations fluviatiles durant le Crétacé supérieur et le Paléogène ainsi qu'à l'Oligocène-Miocène inférieur, début de l'incision du canyon de l'Ardèche au Néogène.Un protocole de caractérisation par analyse géochimique ICP-AES d'échantillons du Crétacé supérieur et Paléogène référencés sur la carte géologique de Bourg Saint Andéol-889 permet de comparer les signatures géochimiques d'échantillons inédits, gréseux et argileux, trouvés à la surface et dans les cavités des plateaux karstiques ardéchois.(Jolivet et al., 2020)

The vertical mixing in the deep ocean is an important process for the functioning of thermohaline circulation and also for the global climatic system. L'actinium-227 (227Ac) is a natural radioactive isotope product by the protactinium-231 (231Pa) decay in deep marine sediment. The short half-life of this isotope (22 years) makes it a specific tracer of vertical mixing of deep ocean. 227Ac analysis by nuclear counting used until now required from 50 to several hundred liters of water for a limited accuracy. This limited strongly the use of 227Ac in oceanography until today. During this thesis, we developed a join 231Pa-227Ac purification protocol suitable for 10L seawater sample, to perform analysis by MC-ICPMS. In addition to these two isotopes, this separation protocol provides different fractions that can be used to other tracers (Nd, Ra or Th isotopes) from the same water sample.This protocol was applied to archival samples collected during the Bonus GoodHope cruise, in the Southern Ocean. 231Pa was measured at the same time as 227Ac because its analysis is essential to exploit 227Ac data. These new 231Pa data support the previous hypothesis of a strong affinity toward the opal produced by the diatoms and allow to refine the transport of radionuclides along slopping isopycnal surfaces at the South of the ACC. Results from 227Ac data gave estimates of the vertical eddy diffusion coefficient of 1 cm2/s over the mid-ocean ridge, of 14 cm2/s near the African margin due to an enhanced turbulence and of the order of 30 cm2/s in the Weddell gyre. An application of these values is proposed to describe the concentration and isotopic signature distributions of Nd near the continental margin., Le mélange vertical dans l'océan profond est un processus important pour le fonctionnement de la circulation thermohaline océanique et donc pour le système climatique global. L'actinium-227 (227Ac) est un isotope radioactif naturel produit par désintégration du protactinium-231 (231Pa) dans les sédiments marins profonds. Comme il est soluble, il diffuse dans les eaux de fond. Sa demi-vie courte (22 ans) en fait un traceur spécifique du mélange vertical dans l'océan profond. L'analyse de 227Ac par comptage nucléaire utilisé jusqu'à maintenant nécessite de 50 à plusieurs centaines de litres d'eau et reste malgré tout peu précises. Ceci a limité l'utilisation du 227Ac en océanographie. Au cours de cette thèse, nous avons développé un protocole commun de séparation et d'analyse de 227Ac et 231Pa par MC-ICPMS à partir de 10L d'eau de mer. En plus de ces deux isotopes, ce protocole de séparation produit différentes fractions pouvant permettre d'analyser d'autres traceurs (isotopes du Nd, Ra ou Th) sur un même échantillon d'eau.Ce protocole a été appliqué à des échantillons d'archives prélevés lors de la campagne Bonus GoodHope, dans le secteur Atlantique de l'océan Austral. Le 231Pa a été analysé en parallèle du 227Ac, dont l'analyse est primordiale pour exploiter les données de 227Ac . Ces nouvelles données de 231Pa ont conforté la théorie de sa forte affinité pour l'opale produite par les diatomées et a permis d'affiner le modèle de transport des radionucléides le long des isopycnes remontant au sud de l'ACC. Les résultats obtenus de 227Ac ont permis d'estimer des coefficients de mélange turbulent de 1 cm2/s au-dessus de la dorsale océanique, de 14 cm2/s à cause d'une turbulence accrue près de la marge africaine et de l'ordre de 30 cm2/s dans le gyre de Weddell. Une application de ces valeurs est notamment proposée pour décrire la distribution de la concentration et de la signature isotopique du Nd, à l'aide d'un modèle prenant en compte les processus près de la marge continentale.

Mieux comprendre l'origine de la ressource en eau afin d'en améliorer la gestion est aujourd'hui une nécessité. Les cours d'eau de l'amont cévenol du bassin versant des Gardons, présentent des différences dans leurs débits de basses eaux. Ces écarts entre débits s'expliquent, hors des différences liées aux précipitations (orages...), par des contributions particulières des réservoirs géologiques, dans la mesure où les basses eaux correspondent globalement à un régime hydraulique non influencé (tarissement).L'étude a été réalisée principalement durant les étés 2018 et 2019. Les débits et la minéralisation des eaux de surface et des eaux souterraines ont été suivis sur neuf sous-bassins versants. Un modèle de mélange, appliqué en complément du suivi géochimique, permet de quantifier la contribution des différentes formations aquifères et montre de fortes différences entre elles. À l'étiage, deux formations, les micaschistes noirs et les calcaires, se révèlent primordiales dans le soutien des débits : elles alimenteraient les cours d'eau étudiés à hauteur de 41 et 17 % respectivement, alors qu'elles ne couvrent que 13 et 8 % du secteur considéré. L'analyse de la contribution des différentes formations permet d'expliquer les différences de débit spécifique observées pour les cours d'eau du terrain d'étude. Ces contributions à l'étiage, couplées aux débits, permettent d'identifier les réservoirs les plus productifs, qui sont à protéger en priorité. The increase in the severity of hydrological droughts in the Mediterranean basin in relation to climate change leads to the need to better understand the origin of the water resource to improve its management. The defined study area, the Cevennes upper watershed of the Gardons, presents quite significant variations in terms of low water flows. This article questions these differences and proposes to explain these variances in flows not by a rainfall difference but by a variation in the contribution of the geological reservoirs present in the different watersheds.The study was conducted mainly during the summers of 2018 and 2019 where flows and geochemistry of surface water and groundwater were monitored in 9 watersheds. The use of mixing model in addition to this geochemical-hydrological coupling allows to quantify the contribution of the different formations and shows strong contrast between them. At low water, two formations, black micaschists and limestone, appear to be essential to sustain the flow: they would feed the streams studied to the extent of 41 and 17 % respectively, while they cover only 13 and 8 % of the considered area. The analysis of the contribution of the respective geological formations allows to explain the observed specific discharge of the rivers in the study area.This information of contribution in low water coupled with the flow allows to identify the most productive reservoirs and could help to prioritize the protection of these in view of the scarcity of the resource that will result from climate change.

TOTAL ORGANIC CARBON EVALUATION OF HETEROGENEOUS COALY FACIES USING WELL LOGS DATA, CARBONIFEROUS LORRAINE BASIN (FRANCE). The amount of coal still buried in the Lorraine underground represent an important resource of coal bed methane. This type of resource is considered both as an unconventional reservoir and an alternative energy for France which contains a low carbon footprint. Currently a new exploration campaign is being carried out in the French part of Carboniferous basin and new data are available. The Saar-Lorraine Carboniferous Basin is about 300 km long and 20 km wide. The main part of the sedimentary filling consists of 5 km of fluvio-lacustrine deposits of the Westphalian in which the coal series develop. Westphalian strata are overlain by fluvial-dominated continental series of Stephanian in which coal is almost absent and finally a Permo-triassic cover of about 500 m thickness. There is an important interest in the Westphalian and Stephanian formations in the Saar-Lorraine basin as a potentially prospective coal bed methane. Coal, shale and coaly shale are the most prominent source rocks in the Lorraine basin. One key parameter to evaluate the potential gas generation is the total organic carbon content (TOC). There are well-known methods to estimate TOC in the laboratory such as carbon analyzers or Rock-Eval pyrolysis. However, sampling of the core or drill cuttings is very costly and the TOC estimated in this case is discontinuous along sedimentary profiles. To overcome this limitation, several methods are derived from well logs. In Saar-Lorraine basin well logs for analysis are readily available and some drilling cores avilable to provide samples to be analyzed as to calibrate the results from logging data. Recent publications describe methods of TOC determination by well-logs applied to marine clay deposits, yet application to continental coal bearing strata is much more scarce. A major problem to over-come is linked to the complexity of the sedimentary successions. The fluvial facies are dominant and characterized by fining upward depositional sequences which evolve from conglomerate to sandstone, silt, clay and sometimes coal. Thicknesses and extension in space of facies may vary significantly, due to local controlling factors. These were characterized by the study of facies sedimentology, depositional environment interpretation and genetic depositional sequence analysis using core data and well-log analysis. Two different TOC estimation techniques from well logs data, Δlog R (Passey et al., 1990) and Carbolog (Bessereau et al., 1991) were used within Techlog Schlumberger software with the aim to provide a best estimation for our continental fluvio-lacustrine coal bearing strata as well and coal bed methane reservoirs. These two methods rely on the response of well logs to organic matter using an overlay of sonic wave and resistivity logs. Furthermore, contrary to Carbolog, the application of Δlog R requires the determination of level of organic maturity (LOM) for each formation. LOM was determined using the correlation table proposed Hood at al. (1975) for vitrinite reflectance either measured by organic petrography or estimated from Rock-Eval Tmax values. This study is applied on three wells on the eastern part of the basin (Folschviller, Diebling and Johannsweiler) and three others on the western side (Saulcy, Lorettes and Chaumont ). Results show that there is high agreement between TOC estimated values using well logs and core measurements for sandstones. However, both Δlog R and Carbolog methods tend to underestimate TOC when compared to the available TOC measurements for coal, coaly shale and shale. It appears that the very large range of TOC values (from 0 to 100%) is a challenge in the application of the methods, especially when kerogen is very concentrated in coal seams. Objectives of this presentation will be to explain why TOC is underestimated for shales and coal seams, how to correct the calculated values and how this impacts the source-rock volumes estimates. It will also be presented how this information combined to facies analysis, depositional environment and genetic interpretation contributes to assess source-rock distribution in these very heterogenous sedimentary series. The Main Ethiopian Rift (MER) is the northern portion of the East African Rift System and separates the Eastern and Western plateaus of Ethiopia. The recent volcanic and tectonic activity is largely focused within the rift basin along a 20 km wide zone on the rift floor. Large silicic volcanic complexes are aligned along this central rift axis but their eruptive histories are not well constrained.The Bora-Baricha-Tullu Moye (BBTM) volcanic field is situated in the central Main Ethiopian Rift and has a different appearance than the other MER volcanic systems. The BBTM constitutes several late Quaternary edifices, the major ones are: Tullu Moye, Bora and Baricha. In addition, there are multiple smaller eruptive vents (e.g. Oda and Dima), cones, and domes across the ca. 20 X 20 km wide area. Currently, there is very little information on the frequency and magnitude of past volcanic eruptions. We present a new dataset of field observations, componentry, petrography, geochronology (40Ar/39Ar), and glass major and trace element chemistry. The data are assessed as potential fingerprints to assign diagnostic features and correlate units across the area, and establish a tephrostratigraphic framework for the BBTM volcanic field.Two large-volume and presumably caldera-forming eruptions are identified, the younger of which took place at 100 ka. The volcanic products exposed in the BBTM area show that the volcanic field has undergone at least 20 explosive eruptions since then. The post-caldera eruptions have comenditic (Tullu Moye) and pantelleretic (Bora and Baricha) magma compositions. Other smaller edifices such as Oda and Dima also erupted pantelleritic magmas, and only differ slightly in composition than tephra of Bora and Baricha. Tullu Moye had two distinct explosive eruptions that dispersed tephra up to 14 km away and on to the eastern plateau. Bora and Baricha together had at least 8 explosive eruptions. Their deposits can be distinguished by their light grey color and unique lithic components. Oda had 7 eruptions, the most recent of which generated a pyroclastic density current that travelled up to 10 km away from the vent. Dima experienced at least 3 eruptions, generating tephra with a bluish-grey colour.This mapping and compositional analysis of the deposits from the BBTM in the MER indicates that the region has been more active in the last 100 ka than previously thought, which has implications for hazards assessments for the region.

Rare Earth Elements (REE) are used in numerous industrialized products. The main sources of REE are carbonatite lavas and intrusions. Carbonatites are rare, carbonate-rich lavas, whose origin remains underconstrained: either directly derived from the melting of a C-rich mantle, or formed by protracted differentiation and immiscibility from silicate magmas. This project is focused on the petro-geochemical study of mantle xenoliths gathered around the Oldoinyo Lengai (OL; Tanzania), the only active volcano emitting carbonatites on Earth. Thanks to a multi-mineral approach integrating chemical data of all the mineral phases present in mantle xenoliths, this study shows that the Tanzanian lithospheric mantle is heterogeneous, with a complex metasomatic history. In addition, some xenoliths contain carbonates similar to those previously observed in the lithospheric mantle from the area. The isotopic compositions of carbonates from this study and of two samples from the literature reanalyzed herein display δ18O and δ13C isotopic compositions that support the pedogenic formation of these carbonates. This refutes an overall carbon enrichment, in the form of mantle carbonates, of the lithospheric mantle under the only active volcano emitting carbonatites. These results support the formation of Tanzanian carbonatites by extreme differentiation from alkaline magmas produced by the partial melting of a relatively C-poor mantle. In addition, alkaline silicate magmas (melilitite, Mg-nephelinite) are considered to be the potential parental magmas of carbonatites currently produced by the OL. Previous studies on these magmas have shown that they can potentially be generated by the partial melting of pyroxenite metasomatic lithologies carrying volatile-rich phases (CO2, H2O). Hence, the melting of a natural metasomatic vein from our sample set forms the most volatile-rich silicate alkaline magmas experimentally produced from a natural protolith. The melting of metasomatic phlogopite-rich pyroxenites veins produces magmas which compositions strongly suggest their involvement in the genesis of the primitive magmas of the area. Thus, these results suggest that the partial melting of the fertile veins of a metasomatized mantle participates in the formation of the parental magmas of carbonatites., Les Terres Rares (REE) sont utilisés dans de nombreux produits industrialisés. Les principales sources de REE sont les laves et intrusions carbonatitiques. Les carbonatites sont des laves rares, riches en carbonates, dont les modèles pétrogénétiques font débat: soit une formation directe par la fusion partielle d'un manteau enrichi en carbone, soit par différenciation extrême puis immiscibilité à partir d'un magma silicaté alcalin. Ce projet se base sur une étude pétro-géochimique des xénolithes mantelliques recueillis autour de l'Oldoinyo Lengai (OL; Tanzanie), le seul volcan actif émettant des carbonatites, pour mieux contraindre la genèse des magmas carbonatitiques et alcalins associés. Grâce à une approche multi-minérale intégrant l'ensemble des données chimiques de toutes les phases minérales des xénolithes, cette étude montre que le manteau lithosphérique Tanzanien est hétérogène avec une histoire métasomatique complexe. Par ailleurs, certains xénolithes contiennent des carbonates similaires à ceux observés précédemment dans le manteau de la région. Les compositions des carbonates de cette étude et de deux échantillons de la littérature réanalysés ici documentent des δ18O et δ13C qui soutiennent la formation pédogénique de ces carbonates et réfutent donc un enrichissement global en carbone, sous forme de carbonates mantelliques, du manteau lithosphérique N-Tanzanien. Ces résultats soutiennent une formation des carbonatites de la région par une différenciation extrême de magmas alcalins produits par la fusion partielle d'un manteau lithosphérique relativement pauvre en carbone. Par ailleurs, les magmas silicatés alcalins (mélilitite, Mg-néphélinite) sont considérés comme les potentiels magmas parents des carbonatites actuellement produites par l'OL. Les études sur ces magmas ont montré qu'ils peuvent être générés par la fusion de lithologies métasomatiques pyroxénitiques porteuses de phases riches en éléments volatils (CO2, H2O). Ainsi, la fusion d'une veine métasomatique naturelle provenant de nos échantillons forme les magmas alcalins silicatés les plus riches en CO2 et H2O expérimentalement produits depuis un protolithe naturel. La fusion des veines de pyroxénites à phlogopites forme donc des magmas dont les compositions suggèrent leur implication dans la genèse des magmas primitifs de la région. Ces résultats suggèrent que la fusion partielle des veines fertiles d'un manteau métasomatisé participe à la formation des magmas parents des carbonatites.

The ability to produce milk (i.e. the lactation) is a trait shared by all current mammal species. This ability is fundamental for juvenile development and is an important factor for determining the range of ecologies and reproductive strategies adopted by mammals. However, it is difficult to explore the temporal and evolutionary origins of this trait based on conventional methods and available fossil evidences. In this thesis, I explored the possibilities offered by the isotopic compositions of the calcium (Ca) that is contained in the mineral structure of bones and teeth. Several studies published prior this thesis suggest that Ca isotopic compositions (notably 44Ca and 42Ca) of mineralized tissues can be affect by milk production and consumption. Besides, other studies suggest that in vivo enamel Ca isotopic composition can be preserved in fossilized enamel and can provide information about the ecology and physiology of extinct species. However, the effect of milk consumption and production on these isotopic compositions were documented for a few species only. Besides, the involvement of lactation on these isotopic changes was still poorly described. It was thus necessary to expend the spectrum of mammal species among which these isotopic changes were documented, and to identify more precisely the physiologic causes behind these changes. To investigate these questions, I realized a temporal monitoring of body Ca isotopic compositions in a population of female domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) over a full reproductive cycle. I then compared these experimental data with data obtained from computer assisted modeling, in order to identify the physiological factors that generated the isotopic changes observed experimentally. I also studied the Ca isotopic compositions of mineralized tissues from modern mammal populations of red deer (Cervus elaphus), house mouth (Mus musculus), tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii), short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) and platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus), as well as a fossil population of reindeer (Rangifer tarandus). These studies outline the major role of lactation in the generation of inter-sexual differences of Ca isotopic compositions in mammalian mineralized tissues, and document the heterogeneity of these differences at the scale of placental, marsupial and monotreme mammals. The results presented in this thesis clarify some aspects of the body Ca isotopic cycle of mammals, and provide new perspectives to explore the evolutionary history of lactation. Moreover, these results also provide interesting perspectives in biomedical and paleo-ecological fields., La capacité à produire du lait (i.e. la lactation) est un trait partagé par toutes les espèces de mammifères actuelles. Cette capacité est capitale pour le développement des juvéniles et constitue un facteur déterminant de l’écologie et des stratégies de reproduction des espèces mammaliennes. Toutefois, sur la base des méthodes conventionnelles et des indices fossiles disponibles, il est difficile d’ancrer évolutivement et temporellement l’origine précise de la lactation et de ses fonctions biologiques. Dans la présente thèse, j’ai exploré les possibilités offertes par l’étude des isotopes du calcium (Ca) contenus dans la structure minérale des os et des dents. Plusieurs études publiées en amont de cette thèse suggèrent que la composition en isotopes stables du Ca des tissus minéralisés (44Ca et 42Ca notamment) est susceptible d’être modifiée par la consommation et la production de lait. Par ailleurs, d’autres publications suggèrent que la composition isotopique du Ca de l’émail dentaire est capable de se préserver dans l’émail fossilisé et de fournir des informations sur l’écologie et la physiologie d’espèces disparues. Toutefois, les effets de la consommation et de la production de lait sur ces compositions isotopiques étaient jusqu’ici documentés chez une poignée d’espèces seulement. En outre, des doutes planaient encore sur la responsabilité réelle de la lactation sur certains de ces changements isotopiques. Il était donc nécessaire d’étendre le spectre des mammifères chez qui ces changements isotopiques étaient documentés et d’identifier plus précisément les causes physiologiques derrière ces changements. Pour investiguer ces questions, j’ai réalisé un suivi temporel des compositions isotopiques du Ca organique d’une population de cochons domestiques (Sus scrofa domesticus) durant un cycle de reproduction complet. J’ai ensuite comparé ces données expérimentales avec des données de modélisations permettant d’identifier les facteurs en jeu dans les variations de compositions isotopiques observées expérimentalement. J’ai également étudié les compositions isotopiques du Ca des tissus minéralisés de différentes populations de mammifères actuels comprenant des cerfs élaphes (Cervus elaphus), des souris grises (Mus musculus), des tammar wallabys (Macropus eugenii), des échidnés à nez court (Tachyglossus aculeatus) et des ornithorynques (Ornithorhynchus anatinus), ainsi qu’une population de rennes fossiles (Rangifer tarandus). Les résultats de ces études soulignent le rôle majeur de la lactation dans l’apparition de différences inter-sexes de compositions isotopiques du Ca des tissus minéralisés, et ont permis de documenter l’hétérogénéité de ces différences isotopiques à l’échelle des mammifères placentaires, des marsupiaux et des monotrèmes. Les résultats obtenus au cours de cette thèse permettent des avancées importantes dans la compréhension du cycle isotopique du Ca chez les mammifères, et offrent de nouvelles perspectives pour explorer l’histoire évolutive de la lactation. En outre, ces résultats offrent aussi des perspectives intéressantes dans les domaines du biomédical et de la paléoécologie.

During glacial-interglacial cycles of the Quaternary, the atmospheric CO₂ (pCO₂) concentration is associated with important variations, in particular during transitions between glacial and interglacial periods, also called terminations, with increases of up to 100 ppm of pCO₂ in a few thousand years. While the roles of oceanic circulation and sea-ice cover on pCO₂ are studied for several years now, little is known on the impact of biological productivity. The goal of this thesis is to reconstruct the past changes in biological productivity and to estimate their contributions on atmospheric pCO₂ variations over the last 800 000 years (ka), with particular attention to Termination V (~425 ka) and Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 11, the interglacial period around 400 ka. Two different approaches were combined to reconstruct global and local variations of biological productivity. Measurements of Δ¹⁷O of O₂ in the air trapped in the Antarctic EPICA Dome C ice core between 400 and 800 ka allowed to complete the pre-existing record and trace back variations of global biosphere productivity expressed in oxygen fluxes over the past 800 ka. Micropaleontological (coccoliths, foraminifera) and geochemical (TOC, CaCO₃, XRF) analyses were performed on a sediment core of the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean (MD04-2718) to reconstruct the changes in biological pump efficiency over the past 800 ka. The results obtained during this thesis showed that, at the scale of glacial-interglacial cycles, global biospheric productivity and Southern Ocean carbonate production are more important during interglacial periods compared to glacial periods, minimizing the impact of marine organic productivity on atmospheric pCO₂. Termination V and MIS 11 register the strongest biosphere productivity of the past 800 ka and the highest marine carbonate production of the past 9 interglacial periods in the Southern Ocean. While the important carbonate production is a source of CO₂ for the atmosphere, the rise in biosphere productivity would counterbalance the increase in pCO₂ through photosynthesis.; A l’échelle des cycles glaciaires-interglaciaires (G/IG) du Quaternaire, la concentration atmosphérique en CO₂ (p CO₂) est associée à d’importantes variations, notamment pendant les transitions entre périodes glaciaires et interglaciaires, aussi appelées terminaisons, qui enregistrent des augmentations de pCO₂ de l’ordre de 100 ppm en quelques milliers d’années. Alors que les rôles de la circulation océanique et de l’étendue de la couverture de glace sur le pCO₂ sont étudiés depuis plusieurs années, peu de travaux s’intéressent à l’impact de la productivité biologique. L’objectif de cette thèse est de reconstruire les changements de productivité biologique et d’estimer leur contribution sur les variations de pCO₂ atmosphérique au cours des derniers 800 000 ans (ka), en portant une attention particulière à la Terminaison V (~425 ka) et au stade isotopique (MIS) 11, l’interglaciaire enregistré vers 400 ka. Pour cela, deux approches ont été combinées pour remonter aux variations globales et locales de la productivité biologique. Des mesures de Δ¹⁷O de O₂ effectuées dans les bulles d’air piégé dans la carotte de glace EPICA Dome C (Antarctique) entre 400 et 800 ka, ont permis de compléter les mesures préexistantes et remonter aux variations de la productivité biosphérique globale exprimée en flux d’oxygène au cours des derniers 800 ka. Des analyses micropaléontologiques (coccolithes, foraminifères) et géochimiques (COT, CaCO₃, XRF) ont été effectuées sur une carotte sédimentaire du secteur Indien de l’Océan Austral (MD04-2718) pour remonter aux variations d’efficacité de la pompe biologique au cours des derniers 800 ka. Les résultats obtenus durant cette thèse ont permis de montrer qu’à l’échelle des cycles G/IG, la productivité biosphérique globale et la productivité carbonatée dans l’Océan Austral sont plus importantes pendant les interglaciaires comparées aux glaciaires, ce qui minimise l’impact de la productivité organique marine sur la pCO₂ atmosphérique. La Terminaison V et MIS 11 enregistrent la plus forte productivité biosphérique des derniers 800 ka et la plus importante production carbonatée marine des 9 derniers interglaciaires dans l’Océan Austral. Alors que la forte productivité carbonatée est une source de CO₂ pour l’atmosphère, l’augmentation de la productivité de la biosphère permettrait de contrebalancer l’augmentation de pCO₂ via la photosynthèse.

In the current concept of radioactive waste deep geological disposal planned by Andra (CIGEO project), waste containers are stored into disposal cells drilled into the Callovo-Oxfordian claystone (COx) and encircled by a carbon steel liner. COx and in particular its pyrites, can be oxidized during the drilling of cells. Thanks to an original experimental set-up, involving several pyrite/mineral mixtures and a reactor coupled to a micro gas chromatograph, it is demonstrated, based on the measured O2 consumption that at 100°C in presence of calcite, less than 50% of the pyrite is oxidized. This oxidation induces a transient acidic plume and consequently the corrosion of the steel liner. Andra has developed and patented a low-pH (9, Dans le concept actuel de stockage de déchets radioactifs en couche géologique profonde tel qu’envisagé par l’Andra (projet CIGEO), les colis de déchets sont placés dans des alvéoles creusées dans l’argilite du Callovo-Oxfordien (COx) dont le chemisage est en acier faiblement allié. Grâce à un montage expérimental original, impliquant plusieurs mélanges pyrite/minéral et un réacteur couplé à un micro chromatographe en phase gazeuse, il est démontré, sur la base de la consommation d'O2 mesurée, qu'à 100°C en présence de calcite, moins de 50% de la pyrite est oxydée. The Cenozoic era is characterized by the last transition from a "greenhouse" climate mode to an "icehouse" climate mode with the Antarctic ice-sheet build up. The first traces of glaciation are highlighted at the Eocene-Oligocene Transition (EOT; ~ 33.9 Ma) which is followed by a period of instability of the ice-sheet corresponding to glaciation and deglaciations phases until the terminal glaciation of the Antarctic ice cap during the Middle Miocene Climate Transition (MMCT). However, the processes governing these phases of glaciation-deglaciation remain poorly constrained today and pCO2 fluctuations are not sufficient to explain ice-sheet melting during the Middle Miocene Climate Optimum (MMCO) with pCO2 ranging from 380 to 500 ppm. The main aim of this PhD is to provide new paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental information during this key period, from coastal environments using a combination of different geochemical proxies, delta(18)O, DELTA(47) and (87)Sr/(86)Sr, measured on bivalve shells. The delta(18)O-DELTA(47) coupling was tested in a variety of environments ranging from restricted environments such as lagoon and bay to open coastal environments. The calculated salinities are in good agreement with the tolerance of the organisms present in the different facies encountered. The results obtained with delta(18)O-DELTA(47) coupling can be used successfully to deconvolve the evolution of temperature and local seawater delta(18)O in brackish to marine environments. The (87)Sr/(86)Sr results could also be linked to runoff activity and for low salinities corresponding to a brackish environment. The new data acquiring for the EOT revealed a 10°C drop in temperatures for the EOT-1 accident in the eastern North Atlantic (England) as well as a salinity drop and a river drainage network modification more affected by the sea level fall occurring during the EOT. A drop of ~8°C was also recorded in open marine environments from western North Atlantic (Florida) during the EOT, associated to an increase in seasonal contrast in temperature and salinity. The new data acquired for the Middle Miocene highlight marks differences in the MMCO expression with a ~10°C cooling appearing during this climate optimum in the Mediterranean Sea and a contemporaneous warming of ~6°C in the North Atlantic Ocean for sites located at the same latitude but in different coastal environments and basins. These new data highlight the diversity in the local response of coastal environment in response to global climate change, that impedes the use of archives from this type of environment to study climate evolution.; L'ère Cénozoïque est caractérisée par le dernier passage d'un mode climatique "greenhouse" à un mode climatique "icehouse" avec la mise en place de la calotte Antarctique. Le couplage delta(18)O-DELTA(47) a tout d'abord été testé dans des différents types d'environnement allant d'environnements restreints tels que des lagunes et baies à des environnements côtiers ouverts. Les salinités calculées sont cohérentes avec les gammes de tolérance des organismes présents dans les différents faciès rencontrés. Les résultats obtenus montrent que ce couplage delta(18)O-DELTA(47) peut être utilisé avec succès pour déconvoluer l'évolution de la température et du delta(18)O de l'eau de mer locale dans des environnements allant de marin franc à saumâtre. Les résultats en (87)Sr/(86)Sr ont également pu être reliés à l'activité du lessivage continentale et à la salinité lorsque celle-ci est assez basse et correspondant à un environnement saumâtre. Les données acquises montrent une chute de 10°C des températures côtières dans l'est de l'Atlantique Nord (Angleterre) pour l'accident EOT-1 ainsi qu'une baisse de salinité et une modification du réseau de drainage des rivières, davantage affectés par la chute du niveau marin associé à la mise en place de la calotte Antarctique. Une chute de ~8°C a également été mise en évidence dans des environnements marins ouverts dans l'ouest de l'Atlantique Nord (Floride) au cours de l'EOT associée à un contraste saisonnier de température et de salinité plus prononcé. Les données acquises pour le Miocène Moyen a mis en évidence une large gamme d'expression du MMCO, avec un refroidissement de ~10°C en Mer Méditerranée et un réchauffement concomitant de ~6°C dans l'Océan Atlantique Nord pour des sites situés à latitudes similaires mais dans des environnements côtiers et des bassins différents. Ces nouvelles données mettent en évidence la diversité de la réponse locale des environnements côtiers en réponse à un changement climatique global, qui complexifie l'utilisation d'archives provenant de ce type d'environnement pour étudier l'évolution du climat.

Cette thèse a pour objectif d'apporter de nouvelles informations paléoclimatiques et paléoenvironnementales au cours de cette période charnière par l'acquisition de nouvelles données de température et de salinité en domaine côtier à l'aide d'une combinaison de traceurs géochimiques, delta(18)O, DELTA(47) et (87)Sr/(86)Sr, mesurés sur des coquilles de bivalves. Le couplage delta(18)O-DELTA(47) a tout d'abord été testé dans des différents types d'environnement allant d'environnements restreints tels que des lagunes et baies à des environnements côtiers ouverts. Les salinités calculées sont cohérentes avec les gammes de tolérance des organismes présents dans les différents faciès rencontrés. Les résultats obtenus montrent que ce couplage delta(18)O-DELTA(47) peut être utilisé avec succès pour déconvoluer l'évolution de la température et du delta(18)O de l'eau de mer locale dans des environnements allant de marin franc à saumâtre. Les résultats en (87)Sr/(86)Sr ont également pu être reliés à l'activité du lessivage continentale et à la salinité lorsque celle-ci est assez basse et correspondant à un environnement saumâtre. Les données acquises montrent une chute de 10°C des températures côtières dans l'est de l'Atlantique Nord (Angleterre) pour l'accident EOT-1 ainsi qu'une baisse de salinité et une modification du réseau de drainage des rivières, davantage affectés par la chute du niveau marin associé à la mise en place de la calotte Antarctique. Une chute de ~8°C a également été mise en évidence dans des environnements marins ouverts dans l'ouest de l'Atlantique Nord (Floride) au cours de l'EOT associée à un contraste saisonnier de température et de salinité plus prononcé. Les données acquises pour le Miocène Moyen a mis en évidence une large gamme d'expression du MMCO, avec un refroidissement de ~10°C en Mer Méditerranée et un réchauffement concomitant de ~6°C dans l'Océan Atlantique Nord pour des sites situés à latitudes similaires mais dans des environnements côtiers et des bassins différents. Ces nouvelles données mettent en évidence la diversité de la réponse locale des environnements côtiers en réponse à un changement climatique global, qui complexifie l'utilisation d'archives provenant de ce type d'environnement pour étudier l'évolution du climat.

Reliable dating is essential in order to put palaeoclimatological, palaeoenvironmental and archeological information from continental carbonates in the correct time frame. This study evaluates U/Th dating of travertines based on two case studies, i.e., in the Ballık (Denizli, SW Turkey) and Süttő (N Hungary) areas. Previous petrographic, mineralogical and elemental characterization of the travertines enabled sampling of, purely calcitic, micrite or spar dominant, zones that are non-, or solely weak, cathodoluminescent. Despite adapted sampling and detrital thorium corrections, U/Th ages of the Ballık and the Süttő travertines are inconsistent with their stratigraphic position. Based on the observation of wavy extinction affecting micritic fabrics and ghost structures, the studied travertines behaved as an open system for uranium after deposition through recrystallisation. Their U/Th ages, consequently, can only be considered as minimum ages. The Ballık travertines precipitated earlier than 0.55-1.31 Ma ago, when late-stage cementation along fractures and in cavities took place, and form the oldest travertines deposited in the Denizli basin. The formation of the Süttő travertine area started at the earliest around 2.5 Ma with precipitation of the Cukor travertine. With some short interruptions, active travertine formation in the area took place maximally until 120 ka. The decreasing ages of the Süttő travertines towards the Danube, prove the complex nature of travertines both during deposition as well as during diagenesis, which leads to anomalies with regard to the law of superposition. The diagenetic susceptibility of continental carbonate deposits poses problems in terms of accurate and precise dating. U/Th dating of the intrinsically heterogeneous fabrics of travertines and tufa, as presently applied, should be ceased. Travertines and tufa up to ~100 ka might be the exception due to the limited extent of recrystallisation. Sparite cements and veins can be dated more accurately but, even with multiple samples from the same study site and inclusion of coeval samples, give only minimum ages for the whole deposits. To better constrain the time frame of the whole bodies, results from independent dating methods and from the surrounding deposits are necessary. In addition, it is important to keep in mind that the open-system behavior of continental carbonates has implications for diagenetic, palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatological studies based on geochemical proxies. Des datations fiables sont essentielles afin de replacer les informations paléoclimatologiques, paléoenvironmentales et archéologiques tirées des carbonates continentaux dans un cadre chronologique correct. Cette étude évalue la validité des datations U/Th de travertins à partir de deux cas d´études situés dans les régions de Ballık (Denizli, sud-ouest de la Turquie) et Süttő (nord de la Hongrie). La caractérisation pétrographique, minéralogique et géochimique antérieure a permis de choisir des échantillons dans des zones constituées de calcite pure, dominées par la micrite ou la sparite, et faiblement ou non cathodoluminescentes. Malgré un échantillonnage adapté et l’application d’une correction pour le thorium détritique, les âges obtenus sont incohérents avec leur position stratigraphique. L’observation d’extinctions onduleuses affectant les fabriques micritiques et les structures fantômes suggère que les travertins étudiés se comportent comme un système ouvert pour l’uranium après précipitation par recristallisation. En conséquence, leurs âges U/Th ne peuvent donc être considérés que comme des âges minimums. Les travertins Ballık ont précipités il y a plus de 0.55-1.31 Ma lors de la phase de cimentation tardive le long de fractures et dans des cavités, et forment les travertins les plus anciens du bassin de Denizli. La formation des travertins de Süttő a commencé au plus tôt il y a 2.5 Ma avec la précipitation du travertin Cukor. Avec quelques interruptions courtes, la formation de travertins actifs dans la région s’est déroulée au maximum jusqu’à 120 ka. Plus on s’approche du Danube, plus les âges du travertin de Sütto rajeunissent, prouvant ainsi la nature complexe des travertins tant lors du dépôt que lors de la diagenèse, ce qui conduit à des anomalies en ce qui concerne la loi de superposition. Les processus diagénétiques des carbonates continentaux posent problème en termes de datations justes et précises. La datation U/Th des fabriques intrinsèquement hétérogènes des travertins et des tufs, telle qu’elle est actuellement appliquée, devrait donc cesser. Les travertins et tufs jusqu’à ~100 ka pourraient être l’exception en raison de l’étendue limitée de la recristallisation. Les ciments et veines sparitiques peuvent être datés avec plus de précision mais, même avec plusieurs échantillons provenant du même site d’étude et l’inclusion d’échantillons contemporains, ils ne fournissent que des âges minimaux pour l’ensemble des dépôts. Pour mieux contraindre le cadre chronologique de la croissance des carbonates continentaux, les résultats de méthodes de datation indépendantes et de dépôts encadrants sont nécessaires. De plus, il est important de souligner que le comportement des carbonates continentaux en système ouvert a des implications pour les études diagénétiques, paléoenvironnementales et paléoclimatologiques basées sur des indicateurs géochimiques.

The object of this thesis is to study the impacts of past human activity on the ecosystems, particularly on their resilience in the Northern Vosges Mountains (NVM). This research also tries to fill existing gaps regarding ancient history of societies. To this end, four peaty areas were studied via a multi proxy approach that crosses multiples analyses of pollen, non-pollen palynomorph and carbonised particles, as well as the study of sediments. The results allowed us to reconstruct the forest succession from over 9000 yrs cal. BP that roughly follows the one studied in Western Europe, except for the persistence of Pinus that was allowed by the edaphic conditions around the sites. This study also provides new elements on the indigenous status of Picea in the NVM. In fact, we can observe the first traces of “natural” presence of this tree species long before the plantations of the 19th century even though it is usually considered as exotic in the management plans. The first anthropic impacts on the forest cover were noticed from the initial Neolithic and the landscape use diversifies and increased later, from the Iron Age and the Middle Ages. Even though the valley floors and humid areas were impacted as well, Human activities creates a strong decline in the forest ecosystem – the heart of landscape use - and a modification in its specific composition. Even though the landscape was then fragmented, thus increasing biodiversity, the anthropic pressure resulted in a loss of resilience in the forest. The later only recovers its original values with the modification of landscape use, forest protection policies and new plantations in recent years.; Cette thèse vise à étudier les impacts des activités humaines passées sur les écosystèmes et notamment sur leur résilience dans la région des Vosges du Nord, et tente de combler les lacunes concernant l’histoire ancienne des sociétés. BP, qui suit globalement celle observée en Europe de l’Ouest avec cependant la persistance du pin du fait des conditions édaphiques autour des sites. Cette étude apporte également des éléments nouveaux sur l’indigénat de l’épicéa dans les Vosges du Nord, où les premiers indices de sa présence « naturelle » sont observés bien avant les plantations du XIXème siècle, alors que l’essence est actuellement considérée comme exotique dans les plans de gestion. Les premiers impacts anthropiques sur le couvert forestier sont visibles à partir du Néolithique initial et l’utilisation du paysage se diversifie et s’intensifie à partir de l’Âge du Fer et du Moyen Âge. Bien que les fonds de vallons et les zones humides ne soient pas épargnés, les activités humaines engendrent une forte régression de l’écosystème forestier – qui tient une place centrale dans l’utilisation du paysage – ainsi qu’une modification de sa composition spécifique. Bien que la mise en place d’un paysage morcelé ait généré une augmentation de la biodiversité, la pression anthropique a entraîné une légère perte de résilience de la forêt qui ne retrouve ses valeurs d’origine qu’après la modification de l’utilisation des paysages, les politiques de protection des forêts et les plantations des époques récentes.

The Archean continental lithosphere consists of a dominantly felsic continental crust, made of tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) and subordinate granitoids, and a cratonic lithospheric mantle, made of highly refractory peridotites. Whether they stemmed from the same process of differentiation from the primitive mantle, or were two distinct components that were physically juxtaposed, remains debated. Metal stable isotope ratios are sensitive to magmatic and metamorphic processes and do not evolve with time. Therefore, stable isotope ratios are complementary to radiogenic isotope ratios, and they allow direct comparisons to be made between different terrestrial components without age corrections. Isotopes of iron and zinc, metals ubiquitous in Earth’s lithosphere, can be tracers of lithospheric formation and evolution because they are affected by partial melting (Fe, Zn), redox state (Fe), and the presence of sulfides (Fe, Zn). Here, using stable Fe and Zn isotopic data from Archean samples of the lithospheric mantle and the continental crust, we show that Fe and Zn isotopes define a linear array, best explained by their coupled fractionation behavior during magmatic processes. Our data show that high degrees of partial melting (>30%) during the formation of the cratonic mantle and mafic protocrust, and reworking of the early crust significantly fractionate Fe and Zn isotopes. Conversely, Fe and Zn isotope ratios in the TTG are similar to those in Archean mafic rocks, suggesting an origin by fractional crystallization of basalt, and implying limited Fe and Zn isotopic fractionation, instead of partial melting of mafic crust. Moreover, the absence of Fe and Zn isotope decoupling due to redox effects, melt (fluid)–rock or sediment-rock interaction, and decarbonation indicates that subduction, at least as we understand it now, is not required to explain the Fe and Zn isotope composition of the Archean lithosphere.

Carbonatites and alkaline magmatic rocks occur in intraplate context and constitute a small fraction of the earth magmatism. Those magmas are particularly enriched in volatiles (carbon dioxide, halogens, water) and also in rare metals (REE, Hf, Zr, Ta, Nb). The associated deposits are often affected by hydrothermal and supergen processes which erase any relation to the magmatic processes at the origin of these magmas (immiscibility, differentiation, fractional crystallization) and responsible of the rare metal and volatile enrichments.High pressure and high temperature experiments have been performed to characterize the behavior of rare metals during both magma differentiation. These experiments simulate the immiscibility between carbonate and alkaline silica-undersaturated melts, during the crystallization of the magma.The optimum of carbonate melt REE enrichments across alkaline magma differentiation course is identified : carbonate melts immiscible with highly differentiated and polymerised silicate melts of phonolitic/phono-trachytic compositions are the REE richest. A modelling of carbonate melts REE enrichment based on the silicate melt composition is suggested, to identify the REE potential of carbonatites which may be immiscible with an alkaline magmatic rock, or to identify at which differentiation stage the immiscibility has occurred. Moreover, the silicate melt degree of differentiation and polymerisation has also an impact on crystal rare metal enrichments : crystals which coexist with highly differentiated and polymerized silicate melts are highly enriched in rare metals. This implies that silicate melts become depleted in REE across the differentiation compare to crystals and carbonate melts.; Les carbonatites et les roches magmatiques alcalines constituent une faible fraction du magmatisme terrestre et sont essentiellement produits en contexte intraplaque. Ces magmas sont particulièrement riches en éléments volatils (dioxyde de carbone, halogènes et eau) et présentent aussi des fortes concentrations en métaux rares (REE, Hf, Zr, Nb, Ta). Les gisements associés à ces roches magmatiques sont souvent affectés par des stades hydrothermaux tardifs brouillant les relations entre les processus magmatiques à l’origine de la formation de ces magmas (immiscibilité, différenciation, cristallisation fractionnée) et cet enrichissement métaux et en constituants volatils. Des expériences haute pression et haute température ont été réalisées afin d’évaluer le comportement des métaux rares pendant la différenciation de ces magmas. Ces expériences adressent le comportement des métaux rares pendant les processus d’immiscibilité entre liquides silicatés et liquides carbonatés et pendant la cristallisation de ces magmas. Les conditions optimales d’enrichissement en REE des liquides carbonatés au cours de la différenciation des magmas alcalins sont identifiées : les liquides carbonatés les plus enrichis sont formés par immiscibilité avec des liquides silicatés très différenciés et polymérisés de type phonolite/phono-trachyte. Un modèle d’enrichissement en REE des liquides carbonatés basé sur la composition des liquides silicatés est proposé et permet d’identifier i) le potentiel en REE des carbonatites pouvant être formées par immiscibilité avec des magmas alcalins, et ii) le stade de genèse par immiscibilité des carbonatites tout au long de la différenciation alcaline. De plus, le degré de différenciation et de polymérisation des liquides silicatés joue également un rôle sur l’enrichissement en métaux rares des cristaux (clinopyroxène, grenat, titanite, calcite et apatite) : les métaux rares sont plus concentrés dans les minéraux coexistant avec des liquides silicatés plus différenciés et polymérisés. Ceci implique que les liquides silicatés alcalins tendent à s’appauvrir en REE au cours de la différenciation, en comparaison aux liquides carbonatés et aux cristaux.
