Se presenta un estudio exhaustivo sobre la utilización de Instagram por parte del periodismo de verificación (fact-checking) a nivel global. En concreto, se analiza el uso de los formatos que permite esta plataforma (fotografía, álbum y vídeo) y su efecto en dos indicadores clave del engagement: likes y comentarios. Se analizaron mediante estadística descriptiva e inferencial todas las publicaciones de todos los verificadores pertenecientes a la IFCN emitidas hasta octubre de 2023 (n=95631; 80 verificadores de 49 países). Se observan diferencias notables en la utilización de los formatos por regiones mundiales. A nivel global, el formato tiene un efecto mayor en el número de likes que en los comentarios. Los fact-checkers latinoamericanos y asiáticos realizan un mejor aprovechamiento de la plataforma, ya que explotan en mayor medida los formatos más efectivos en el impulso tanto de likes como de comentarios. Donde se aprecian las desviaciones más notables entre utilización y engagement de los formatos es en Europa: es mayoritario el uso de la fotografía única a pesar de que es el formato que menor número de likes y comentarios recibe. Aunque en términos generales la utilización del formato álbum impulsa notablemente ambos indicadores, se detectan desviaciones significativas en el funcionamiento del engagement en las distintas regiones, lo que demuestra su carácter contextual y la dificultad de establecer pautas generales para impulsarlo.

The recent surge in disinformation targeting gender themes poses a substantial threat to women’s equality in democratic systems. This study investigates the efforts of three fact-checking platforms prominent in Ibero-America (Maldita.es and Newtral in Spain and Chequeado in Argentina) in countering antifeminist fake news. Employing a dual methodology, we conducted a content analysis of pieces published on gender issues over one year and semi-structured interviews with representatives from these platforms. The findings unveil a consistent production of texts addressing contemporary feminist affairs. Disinformers target both the feminist movement and its historical grievances, including gender-based violence. Fact checks emerge as the primary format for combating these hoaxes, with explainers gaining against increasingly complex disinformation narratives. The verification methodology emphasizes consulting official sources and expert testimony. Interviewees acknowledge that there is still much progress to be made in gender-related fact-checking.

When confronted with suspicious information, the most common advice is to rely on trusted, well-known news media outlets to verify it. However, in a high-choice, fragmented media ecosystem, news readers might easily find a source that confirms what they previously thought about an issue, or debunks reports that challenge their values and beliefs. As such, alternative news outlets might be a feasible venue for citizens to confront cross-cutting information. At the same time, avoiding contrary information or actively seeking different points of view depends on personal characteristics, such as ideology or education. Drawing upon the belief gap hypothesis, this study observes how alternative news media use, together with people’s education and political ideology, affect citizens’ fact-checking behaviors when encountering challenging information. Results from a two-wave panel study conducted in Chile suggest that ideology plays a role only for the highly educated, who tend to fact-check the most when they are closer to the left side of the political spectrum.

Las campañas de desinformación en la esfera pública están generando una honda preocupación institucional y académica por sus efectos adversos en la salud democrática: provocan un clima de desconfianza, polarización social y bloquean el debate público. En este contexto, el presente artículo desea contribuir a que la práctica docente y periodística incorpore los hallazgos de la Teoría de los Marcos. El análisis de 135 verificaciones vinculadas a la iniciativa Objectif Desinfox durante la precampaña y campaña electoral de las elecciones presidenciales francesas de 2022, permite explorar la aplicación de esta teoría a la redacción de las noticias más especializadas en desinformación. Se constata que tres cuartos de los encabezamientos de las noticias de verificación estudiadas mantienen el marco del bulo y no señalan el promotor o la finalidad del mismo. El trabajo también ofrece indicaciones concretas para mejorar el encuadre de las mismas, fundamentalmente mediante la redacción del encabezamiento de las piezas.

Las organizaciones de fact-checking están imponiendo unos sistemas de verificación que deben ser evaluados para diseñar futuras estrategias de contención de las fake news. El objetivo de este artículo es describir dichos sitemas para ahondar en la comprensión de los mensajes dudosos para la ciudadanía. Para ello, se han analizado 2.894 registros de la base de datos de Newtral correspondientes a 2018 y 2019 al completo. En concreto, se ha examinado el porcentaje de contenido falso y verdadero, las fuentes de difusión y de verificación, el tiempo empleado en la comprobación y los temas de los mensajes verificados. Se concluye que hay más mensajes fraudulentos que auténticos y los medios de comunicación son la principal fuente de difusión de mensajes dudosos. Además, las fuentes gubenamentales son la primera fuente de verificación, prevalece la credibilidad sobre la inmediatez en el proceso de fact-checking y la política es el área temática que genera más bulos.

The main objective of this article is to investigate the multilevel approach promoted and adopted by the European Union as a response to the fake news phenomenon. On the one hand, the multilevel approach rests on the integration of different territorial levels (local, national and international). On the other hand, it adopts a multi-actor strategy aiming at the hybridisation of competences and increasingly consolidated network strategies, thus trying to overcome the main limitations and inefficiencies of fact-checking and debunking practices. This article, besides reconstructing from a longitudinal perspective the main stages of development and actions linked to the multilevel strategy, analyses its concrete operationalization within the fact-checking network of the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO), a certified community of actors created in 2021, which counts 94 debunking projects spread across the various countries of the Union. Each project was analyzed with respect to 12 variables, which can be traced back to three dimensions, respectively: multi-territorial, multi-actor, and fact-checking practices. From the analysis, the following results emerge: regarding the multi-territoriality dimension, the EDMO network includes and integrates different territorial levels, but remains predominantly focused on the national dimension. Considering the multi-actor dimension, the research highlights that at the macro level the nature of the projects belonging to the network is varied, with an imbalance towards the private sector. Looking at the level of the individual actors (the micro level) involved, there is a low integration of professionalism and still a residual involvement of civil society. Finally, concerning the fact-checking practices the analysis reveals an excessive lack of homogeneity at the methodological level, highlighting the need to develop a common methodology at the European level. Les unités journalistiques dites de fact-checking, consacrées à la vérification de l’information et des propos des gouvernants ou des personnalités, ont opéré en 2017 une conversion vers le « debunking » ou « démystification de rumeurs », en accentuant désormais la participation des publics. Cet article examine le cas emblématique de la rubrique de Libération devenue “CheckNews”, qui collecte les questions de ses usagers sur des informations qu’ils souhaitent voir vérifiées. Comment s’est opérée la synthèse entre journalisme participatif et fact-checking, et en répondant à quels principes ? Fondé sur l’analyse du site CheckNews.fr et sur l’analyse des critères réglementaires de certification des cellules journalistiques de vérification de l’information, cet article se donne pour ambition d’y répondre, et de mettre en perspective les pratiques, les limites et les craintes d’une telle ouverture aux publics.

Este artículo analiza el periodismo de verificación de Colombiacheck, La Silla Vacía y AFP Colombia en un entorno polarizado como el paro nacional del 21 de noviembre del 2019. Mediante un análisis de contenido (n=90) se halló que la desinformación adoptó un formato visual (imágenes y vídeos) estableciéndose una relación estadísticamente significativa entre el formato de los contenidos y el uso de herramientas de verificación. En segundo lugar, se observó que no hay asociación entre la calificación de la verificación con el uso de estas herramientas ni entre el canal de propagación con la tipología de desinformación. En tercer lugar, se observaron diferencias entre los medios en el uso de escalas y categorías de verificación y en la extensión de los chequeos. Por último, se contrastaron los chequeos a hechos comunes para medir el grado de acuerdo obteniéndose valores críticos de confiabilidad al comparar Colombiacheck y La Silla Vacía con AFP.

¿Existe un costo reputacional para las organizaciones de fact checking cuando corrigen contenidos falsos que fueron previamente compartidos en redes sociales? En este trabajo describimos un experimento de encuesta implementado durante la primera ola del Panel Electoral Argentino e incluyo a 5.757 encuestados. El estudio arriba a una serie de resultados. En primer lugar, mide la propensión a compartir contenidos sobre la pandemia cuando estos son ideológicamente congruentes o disonantes con sus preferencias. En segundo lugar, evalúa si los usuarios perciben al fact checker como sesgado ideológicamente [biased perception] luego de ser corregidos. La evidencia muestra una mayor inclinación a compartir correcciones que favorecen la posición del encuestado (pro-actitudinal) y, por otro lado, un aumento modesto en la percepción de distancia ideológica entre el encuestado y el fact checker cuando las correcciones contradicen sus creencias previas (contra-actitudinal).

Our contribution examines how Brazilian online media specialized in fact-checking mobilize transparency in their discursive productions during the period of the last presidential campaign (2018). This study is based on pragmatic approach and two methodological registers (content analysis and semi-directive interviews). Considered as a discursive act, transparency is mobilized to support the objectivity’s ideal worn by fact-checking in journalism as well as to mark the readers’ involvement in the checking process. At the same time, transparency hides editorial strategies under the principle of a common approach, imposed by certification networks.

Las plataformas de verificación de datos se han convertido en un movimiento que, nacido en Estados Unidos, se ha extendido por todo el mundo. Su objetivo es luchar contra la desinformación, las percepciones erróneas y las falsas noticias en el nuevo ecosistema comunicativo en el que las redes sociales adquieren relevancia como fuente de información, y en el que es cada vez más fácil –y asequible a miles de millones de ciudadanos– producir, editar y distribuir (falsa) información. Casi toda la bibliografía y los casos de estudio se han centrado en Estados Unidos. Sobre la verificación de datos en castellano, solo se han investigado las plataformas de verificación en español que el Duke reporter´s Lab incluía en 2018 en su base de datos, así como nueve iniciativas en español surgidas desde 2010 en media docena de países latinoamericanos. En este artículo, después de un marco teórico, abordamos la realidad del fact checking en España. Mediante un análisis cualitativo, identificamos y analizamos las webs de verificación y las actividades de chequeo de información en nuestro país. Ello se complementa con entrevistas a los periodistas que han llevado a cabo iniciativas de fact checking en nuestro entorno. La realidad del fact checking en España, como se demuestra, se haya todavía en una fase incipiente.

In an age of alternative facts, fact-checking has become almost second nature to critical thinkers who are concerned with the consequences of post-truth for the future of democracy. Drawing primarily on the work of Hannah Arendt and secondarily on that of Michel Foucault, this essay questions fact-checking as a democratic world-building practice and argues for forms of truth-telling that do not fall prey to Western philosophical conceptions of absolute truth and its hostility to plurality, opinion, and contingency.

The article critically discusses a few common objections to an intrinsic, language-internal definition of what constitutes a ‘language’ (and, conversely, a ‘dialect’). It argues that, contra postmodernism (1.), languages do exist, they can be counted and languageness can be measured independently and even notwithstanding the speakers’ beliefs and ideologies (2.). It further refutes as unsound all the common criticisms to intelligibility as a tool in assessing languageness: while deviations from common-sense assessments may be expected but are not really of concern to science (3.1.), intelligibility asymmetries (3.2.), apparent infinite graduality (3.3.) and dialect chains (3.4.) are only partial problems to be solved empirically. On the contrary, intelligibility can and is routinely measured in different sciences, and, when applied to language, it tends to dovetail with other criteria, such as dialectometry and the counting of isoglosses (4.).

The phenomenon of fake news, although it has expanded since 2004 in conjunction with the entry into the era of web 2.0, has always existed. If on the one hand the internet has favored freedom of expression by allowing anyone to make their voice heard, on the other hand, in a context characterized by an excessive profusion of information, the web has led to the loss of credibility and legitimacy of knowledge. experts (Martucci 2018). In fact, the measurement of the reliability of the information is no longer based on the authoritativeness of the source and its scientific nature, but on the number of likes and shares on virtual platforms and therefore on the virality of the news (ibidem).

Fact-checking promises to distinguish true from false news. By reducing the uncertainty that characterizes information, its value and its use in democratic debate, it would serve quality journalism to tackle disinformation. What are these factchecking operations really worth? What methods are used to distinguish truth from falsehood and with what results? Does "true information" processed by fact-checking make it credible for the public? To answer these questions, three fact-checking initiatives are examined, paying particular attention to the procedures and reasoning implemented to reestablish the facts as well as the rhetorical elements intended to persuade the public. Through its attention to media experience design, the case study takes into account the modeling of the user implicitly in the media object and in the escort speeches accompanying these fact-checking operations. This article extends the academic and professional discussion initiated in 2017, about the integrative and asymmetrical relationship between the digital giants-Facebook and Google- and the French fact-checkers. The partnerships of news verification, their evolution and their amounts in 2020 and early 2021 (particular year of the pandemic period) are observed and put into perspective with other data from the technological and media sector. In addition, semi-structured interviews carried out with the fact-checkers themselves reveal disparities among the latter, ranging from self-critical questioning to positions mixing consent and unthinking about this situation of influence -although it leads to a relative transformation of their own economic or even editorial model. The hype on generative AI has raised concerns about the spread of disinformation but also opened up new opportunities for hybrid journalism. The proliferation of political propaganda campaigns spread across digital media during election periods constitutes a challenge for journalists who struggle to exercise information gatekeeping. AI-based tools can in principle help, but journalists are resistant to using them since they are sceptical about their compliance with news values and their scarce user-friendliness. To cope with such issues, we present Botlitica, a GPT3-based chatbot able to answer users’ questions according to the information shared on different social media by a given political party which is, thus, embodied by the AI agent in the conversation. The back-end and front-design of the chatbot are devised to privilege transparency. We report the results of a preliminary evaluation of Botlitica which show that the tool fastens journalists’ capabilities to navigate propaganda campaigns inducing them to exercise critical thinking.

A pesar de los intentos previos de analizar y combatir la desinformación, siguen resultando escasas las iniciativas capaces de medir el fenómeno de manera amplia y sistemática. Una de las aproximaciones más productivas se ha basado en el estudio de los desmentidos realizados por agencias de verificación. Centrados en el caso español, se ha utilizado un instrumento previamente validado para realizar un análisis de contenido de 4245 desmentidos realizados por Maldito Bulo (perteneciente a la iniciativa Maldita.es, uno de los fact-checkers de referencia en España) entre 2017 y 2022. Se ha identificado la presencia predominante de temáticas sociales, aunque con la política como materia subyacente y transversal, reforzando el rol polarizador de la desinformación. Además, se observó que la mitad de los contenidos desmentidos podían utilizarse para fomentar el odio o el rechazo hacia determinados colectivos. Entre los formatos y plataformas de difusión, destacan los contenidos textuales y Twitter. Respecto a la evolución temporal, junto a una mayor diversidad de formatos y plataformas, se confirma la gran disrupción de la pandemia, tanto en temáticas como en cantidad de desmentidos, sobre todo en 2020. También se observa una mayor presencia de contenidos que pueden fomentar el odio en los dos últimos años de la muestra.

Na atual ecologia midiática em que assistimos ao rompimento das barreiras entre produtores, consumidores e disseminadores de informações, também nos deparamos com o despertar do fenômeno das notícias falsas (fake news). Um fenômeno, que como sabemos, não é novo, pois falsos relatos, rumores e distorções são praticamente tão antigos como a história dos media e do jornalismo. No presente artigo trazemos uma reflexão sobre a construção e o declínio da credibilidade jornalística nesse contexto de abundância informativa e o papel da inversão no processo de produção noticiosa — no qual a verificação dos fatos é feita após a publicação. Através da análise de como são construídas as organizações de fact-checking, questionamos a necessidade de criar projetos externos no lugar de uma aposta interna, recuperando os tradicionais verificadores de fatos que garantiam o rigor dos conteúdos antes da sua publicação.

The problem of counteracting media manipulation has become particularly acute in the conditions of modern war. The author considers media literacy as a key competence of the future teacher. Higher education should improve knowledge of how to counter hostile propaganda and disinformation, maintain emotional and psychological stability, avoid mass panic, and make correct decisions based on carefully verified information. The future English teacher must master the algorithm for checking the quality of the content of Ukrainian and foreign media; learn to research the expertise of authors, sources of information, in particular, Telegram channels; master digital tools for quick and effective photo and video authentication; familiarize yourself with the key narratives and tactics of Russian propaganda in order to successfully counter them; learn to identify manipulative media content, distinguish between disinformation and harmful propaganda narratives, in particular, to be able to independently create quality content.

Este estudio propone abordar la verificación de los hechos como un proceso de la práctica periodística (fact-checking) y como un género discursivo (fact-check) compartido por distintos campos de la comunicación, desde el periodismo hasta la comunicación estratégica. La pandemia de COVID-19 ha reforzado la necesidad de distinguir entre información falsa y fiable. Se analizan 205 factchecks de hechos sobre vacunas realizadas por Polígrafo, recogidas de la página de Facebook de esta agencia de fact-checking. Concluimos que: i) el 79,5% de las publicaciones analizadas se basan en informaciones divulgadas en redes sociales online; ii) el 82% de las informaciones verificadas son falsas o contienen algún tipo de inexactitud; iii) los casos verificados como verdaderos son, en su mayoría, informaciones que pretenden aclarar dudas sobre la vacunación; iv) la mayoría de las verificaciones se realizan a partir de fuentes oficiales (31,1%), seguidas de fuentes especializadas (21,6%); v) los fact-checks pueden ser entendidos como un cibergénero periodístico, también apropiado por la comunicación estratégica.
