The article explores the aesthetic and medical conceptions of the Côte d'Azur as a privileged place of beauty and health during the nineteenth century. The author used texts and images from French writers, invalids, tourists, physicians and artists containing poetic descriptions of the landscape. She argues that the descriptions were couched in a medical rhetoric and shows how art and medicine intertwined in French perceptions and imaginations of the Côte d'Azur from 1860-1900.
