This article tells the story of Phara Thibault, Elie Marchand and Jasmine Dubé, three artists from different generations whose desire to collaborate on their shared interests sparked a transformative synergy. They co-wrote Tressées serrées, the first draft of a play tackling important issues for children, after only a few hours of creative workshopping. Tressées serrées explores the nuances of sisterhood, rivalry, independence, and co-operation through the eyes of two little girls and delves into themes of identity and cultural belonging that affect biracial families. The three artists also co-wrote this article, which describes the different stages of the play's genesis, from their first meeting to the play's public reading in November 2022 at Théâtre d'Aujourd'hui's La Salle des machines, organized by Montreal's Centre des auteurs dramatiques (CEAD). They hope that sharing this rich, inclusive, and intergenerational writing process will help bring about a tradition of children's theatre featuring biracial families for years to come.
