- Abstract
Conducted between April and June 2023, this survey gathers the testimonies of four composers who have been expatriated at some point in their musical careers, with Quebec representing a point of departure, arrival or stage in their journey. Analía Lludgar (Argentina), Ofer Pelz (Israel), Evelin Ramón (Cuba) and Pierre Alexandre Tremblay (Quebec) were interviewed about the reasons for their expatriation, comparisons between host and home countries, and the personal and musical repercussions of their experiences. The survey reveals their sense of identity, as well as points of convergence and differences in their sociocultural perceptions of Quebec. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the mid-2000s, Portuguese emigration seemed to be a thing of the past. Having joined the European Economic Community in 1986, Portugal was presented by much of the political and media discourse as a modern and developed country. Since the 1990s, Portugal had been receiving immigrants, a phenomenon presented as a symbol of its successful Europeanization. However, at the end of the 2000s, the country was strongly affected by the global economic and financial crisis, and in the 2010s, almost 900,000 people emigrated. This return of emigration shocked Portuguese public opinion and led to numerous studies on this “new” migratory flow.

In the mid-2000s, Portuguese emigration seemed to be a thing of the past. Having joined the European Economic Community in 1986, Portugal was presented by much of the political and media discourse as a modern and developed country. While postcolonial perspectives on « expatriation » have in general focused on white people, this article shows that racialized French people living in Dubai experience simultaneously structural advantages on the job market and excluding assignations in the course of various interactions. This dissonant experience questions the articulation between national status and racial categorization, and more broadly between Westernness and whiteness. Although the specific racialization of French people on Dubai’s job market, which does not equate Frenchness with whiteness, is a central aspect for racialized French people, they remain, to some extent, in a minority position vis-à-vis white French people. They are excluded from « over-privileged » positions on the job market, from certain forms of sociability, and more largely from competing imaginaries that circulate among French residents in Dubai, that associate Frenchness with whiteness. Dubai’s specific configuration reveals the emergence of a form of unstable Westernness, always already called into question.

Young educated Europeans increasingly consider career scenarios in which capital cities in sub-Saharan Africa play a decisive role in their professional and personal trajectories. Based on life stories collected in Dakar and Ouagadougou, this paper examines the imaginaries, professional strategies and life projects of these young European migrants who have been recruited as interns or volunteers in international organizations or had created their own activities.

This article evokes the Tangerine dream related to the port of Tangier, Morocco, located on the straits of Gibraltar - a privileged position where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. Many writers have become infatuated with it for half a century, like the three disciples of the Beat Generation - Burroughs, Ginsberg and Kerouac who lived there, in the wake of another American writer, Paul Bowles - a composer and traveler who became a forerunner by settling down in Tangier after the Second World War. These meetings in Tangier, where expatriates dealt with art, literature and drugs, gave birth to Burrough’s avant-garde masterpiece, The Naked Lunch, in which Tangier reflects the author’s inner experience. Paul Bowles translated into English Mohamed Choukri’s For Bread Alone, a major work of classical Moroccan literature, which depicts the port after the manner of traditional, realistic, autobiographical novels. Both novels were censored when published in their author’s country of origin for their transgressive aspects, revealing the darker side of life in Tangier, not unknown to the demons of American counterculture as well as to experiences of misery in Morocco, as shown in Choukri’s novel (translated into French by Ben Jelloun).

The international presence embodied by French nationals living abroad is an asset for France. Underlying the measures deployed for them, the objectives of influence pursued by the nation-state sometimes compete with the objectives of support for the population. Designed from a modern and universalist perspective, the public policies are based on a valuable image of the population established abroad that can be used to capitalise on the pursuit of a soft power agenda. French emigration in London, once aristocratic or bourgeois, has become more democratic, and the social recomposition of expatriation, which reflects in professional careers, reveals the failure of institutional mechanisms to fulfill their mission of providing an inclusive support system for citizens.

In the corporate world, studies show that the repatriates, i.e. expatriated professionals who return from their mission abroad, become more committed to the development of their career after an international experience. Expatriation provides knowledge and professional experience, something which may be related, by the repatriate, to possible career ascension or better performance in the organization. However, when this doesn't occur, frustration can lead him to look for another company which appreciates his knowledge, and this is a major entrepreneurial challenge: the retention of repatriates. This study aims to analyze the perceived relation between repatriation and expectations concerning professional career on the part of professionals who had or have an international professional experience through the Alpha company, a large organization which operates in more than 100 countries and maintains an expatriation process for 12 years, in 9 countries. Thus, a case study was carried out with 21 interviews, discussed through content analysis. As the main finding of this study, one finds out that repatriates start attributing more value to their professional development, establishing a stronger bond with themselves than with the organization where they work. As there're failures on the part of the company to present a planning to take advantage from the experience of this employee in positions which require more responsibility, some respondents stop thinking of their career within the company. Thus, they open themselves to search for other opportunities in the labor market. On the other hand, those who seek space within the organization end up perceiving themselves as "a problem" for the company.

While in the media, migration is presented as the result of humanitarian crises, expatriation and international mobility are portrayed as the natural results of a globalization that serves the countries of the South as much as the countries of the North. However, a growing number of Europeans choose to settle in the South for the long term, despite the supposed security offered by the « welfare » states. In academic literature, the latter are often identified as reproductive agents of postcolonial systems or as privileged migrants. In a context where the European Commission has given itself the mandate, for about fifteen years now, to promote both international mobility and entrepreneurship among young people, what about young Europeans who engage in the development of an entrepreneurial project in a South, while they are still at the beginning of their professional career? This research aims to describe the migration and entrepreneurship experience of young adult and middle-aged adult Europeans in Mexico City in particular. We carried out an ethnographic fieldwork located in Mexico City for a year and a half, aiming to consider the temporalities inherent to migratory and entrepreneurial processes. The data is drawn from the biographical accounts of the participants, from various observation activities related to their entrepreneurial life and their condition as "first world" migrants, as well as a shared daily experience. Through a mainly interactionist lens, the thesis presents the characteristics of the trajectories of these entrepreneurs, the quests that are at the core of the constitution of their entrepreneurial project and the place they occupy socially in the context of the metropolis of Mexico. We retain that North-South migrations can also involve a process of incorporation marked by ruptures, difficulties or necessary identity negotiations, just like the migrations traditionally studied. That said, their experience also contains aspects connected to the conceptions of a world divided between the "North of the South" which are rooted in the particular local context, Mexico City, and which are revealed in the social interaction in the presence of the Mexican counterparts that they meet.

Historically considered as a provider of missionaries for Africa, France has become a great demand for priests called fidei donum, i.e. missionaries sent by their diocese for a determined period of time to help a Church that is in a situation of shortage of priests. This is a kind of reversal of the mission. Based on interviews with 65 priests and 50 volunteer collaborators, this study aims to explore the organisational socialisation of missionary expatriates in a parish context. Confronted with multiple difficulties from the moment of their arrival, these missionaries apply intercultural skills in order to successfully integrate into a society divided by an unprecedented migration crisis. They try to respond daily to the many challenges they face in a Church that, despite its internal pitfalls, never ceases to boast of its identity as the "elder daughter of the Church". This study is primarily interested in addressing the issue of the implementation of intercultural competences of non-traditional expatriates in the process of their socialisation in an organisation with a strong historical culture. The research methodology is based on a qualitative study which, together with semi-structured interviews, allows for the enrichment of the model to be tested and for the discussion of the intercultural competence strategies implemented by missionary expatriates. This research has uncovered many managerial keys to making intercultural operations much more effective. It shows organisations the enormous benefits they can expect to achieve by taking cultural factors into account in a situation.

Are “Doctors Without Borders” (MSF) doctors without a homeland? Based on fifty interviews, statistical data and a participatory observation, this articledescribes humanitarian mission conditions limiting local integration and suggests three forms of attachment: home (“break expatriates”), elsewhere (“multi‑homeland expatriates”) or nowhere (“duty‑free expatriates”). For the latter, MSF plays, until their departure from the organization, the role of substitute homeland.

This paper seeks to analyze expatriation in a phenomenological perspective. It aims to question the usual analytical tools of human displacements. Thedeconstruction of social class, racial and national identities, allows us to highlight the emancipation of the individual from the patria. Expatriation appears like a heuristic existential notion to look differently at international migrations. This perspective unifies migratory situations beyond the implicit cleavages between tradition and modernity.

Based on a qualitative study conducted between 2016 and 2018 among thirty French people who migrated to Quebec, this article proposes to distinguish four types of migration projects: the exploration, settlement, circulation and return projects. The trajectories and narratives collected show that these projects are not mutually exclusive or fixed in time, but that there is a fluidity between them, which moreover do not always correspond to the administrative categories of migration statuses in Canadian immigration policy., Basado en una encuesta cualitativa realizada entre 2016 y 2018 con treinta franceses que emigraron a Quebec, este artículo propone distinguir cuatrotipos de proyectos migratorios: el proyecto de exploración, de establecimiento, de circulacion y de retorno.

The article looks at expatriation as one of the many borderlands where Americans have been brought into contact with other cultures and social realities. In trying to make sense of the relationship expatriates have established with their chosen country, it questions the notion of an “outsider status” often claimed by the self-exiled writers of the 1920s. It looks instead at the contradictory personal and social dynamics that have determined the nature of the expatriates’ engagement with their host society. It focuses on expatriates in Italy during the twenty years of the fascist regime and combines a typological and biographical approach. It analyzes four possible stands toward the dictatorship —active pro-fascist, passive pro-fascist, passive anti-fascist, active anti-fascist—through the experience of four expatriates: George Nelson Page, scion of the famous Virginia planter family; Iris Cutting Origo, raised among the wealthy Anglo-American colony of Florence; the art critique Bernard Berenson and Robert Winston Wiley, a young radical from the Mid-West who contributed articles to the magazine Common Sense. This approach highlights the complex articulation of a number of personal, social and political determinants that fashioned the attitude these expatriates adopted toward the dictatorship. It also indicates that the expatriate experience does not lend itself to sweeping generalizations but needs to be carefully contextualized and historicized.

- Abstract
The Adolescence process, a sensitive period in the identity development process, becomes increasingly complex as it takes place within an expatriate family. In this article, the authors examine the individual psychological events for the adolescent and other family members as well as intra-family dynamics in place in this life event. Based on systemic theories of three authors, Boszormenyi-Nagy, Bowen and Dessoy, and an illustration through two case reports, they formulate an etiological hypothesis of the mechanisms leading to the development of psychiatric disorders among these adolescents. Finally, they propose ways forward in the systemic management of these particular cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; This article analyzes the paradoxical behaviour of repatriates who are frustrated yet remain loyal to their organization, using Marcel Mauss’s gift/countergift theory, which is a still-emerging in management science. Considering an expatriation experience as a “total social fact” that includes an individual’s past, present and future and connects all their personal and professional dimensions, we set forth a renewed perspective on the period of repatriation and offer managerial recommendations that take into account the new mechanisms brought to light.; Este artículo analiza el paradójico comportamiento de los repatriados frustrados pero fieles a su organización, a partir de una teoría aún emergente en las Ciencias de Gestión, la del “don/contra-don”, de Marcel Mauss. Systematic expatriation of the Serbian and Montenegrin colonists at the Kosovo and Metohija territory, thru which the Yugoslavian state wished to reverse the ethnic situation in this region, being occupied by Albanians predominantly during the interwar period, however historically considered to be the birthplace of Serbian statehood, as well as destinies of these colonists during the WWII and after the war, all this excite inconsistent reactions both within the political sphere and within understanding the whole process in historical, political, and sociological research up till now. Subject matter concerns one of the neuralgic points within the Serbian-Albanian relationships, and as of the Kosovo and Metohija situation in last decades this issue used to become also subject of impassioned political discussions and often sectarian discourses. Subjected article attempts, based on research of sources and studying of large literature, to describe impartially as much as possible, the course of the colonization, its limits and destiny of colonists, using which the communist power tried to chill out the situation in Kosovo and Metohija after the WWII, during which majority of Albanian population identified with the solution of Albanian problem such a way, how fascist Italy introduced it. Article is also focused to interwar trials to resolve the situation within the region thru expatriation the Muslim Albanian ethnic into the Turkey.

This research explores the mobility trajectories of French students enrolled at McGill University and HEC Montréal, for they represent the largest community of international students in Quebec. Aiming for a better understanding of the phenomenon of mobility in the era of globalization, this thesis analyzes the motivational, experiential and biographical narratives of these students. Moreover, this research aims to account the practices of social and cultural reproduction expressed through these narratives. The analysis of the biographical narratives suggests that the type of mobility observed mainly concerns students from middle and upper-middle class backgrounds with relatively significant cultural, social and economic resources and a predisposition to mobility. The motivational stories of French students in mobility sometimes include "strategic" intentions but are rather marked by "hedonistic" motivations where mobility is a rite of passage used for self-fulfilment and personal discovery. The analysis of representations, meanings and uses of academic, urban, social and cultural space through experiential narratives reveals that Montreal is often the embodiment of a "promised land" of personal fulfillment. However, while the speeches reflect an ease of adaptation to the collegiate and Montreal environment, the experience of integration shows the opposite. Students tend to create friendship networks, based on the sharing of French identity and the experience of mobility, which are maintained through common sociability spaces. This isolation tends to strengthen the bonds of a privileged community, resulting in the reproduction of the social advantage of this category as well as the French socio-cultural codes that are perpetuated and flourish in the Montreal urban space.

This article explores discourses of expatriation in Merida (Mexico) developed in autobiographies, handbooks for expatriates, local house tours, websites and videos, as well as interior design books. In the city of Merida (Mexico), buying and remodeling a colonial home has become a central theme in expatriation narratives. North American expatriates have become house renovation experts and are fueling a local real estate boom. But for U.S. and Canadian residents, the houses of Mérida also embody lofty community ideals–upward mobility, the American Dream, the Protestant Work Ethic, and even nationalist pride.

The word 'displacement' is used here in all its acceptions including geographical expatriation, cultural and linguistic distanciation from the fatherland and the mother tongue as well as acculturation and bilingualism. But 'displacement' also refers to Chrai'bi's marginalisation within literature as a Moroccan writing in French, his 'politically incorrect' opinions, and his rejection of the literary intellectual world. Various types of linguistic displacements are examined: in particular; the insertion of Arab words, idioms and Qur'anic venues within French sentences, with or without italics, footnote, translation, and explanatory context. These liu2uistic displacements are also used as a tool to establish his position, as well as to displace the readers to the margins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; This article explores French social and academic practices in Africa via the Research Institute for Development. They reveal social mechanisms of isolation of French expatriate researchers in the host societies, economic and institutional hierarchies vis-à-vis their local counterparts, causing identity divisions between actors who maintain processes of racialization. These processes also appear in the scientific orientation of research programs and feed an academic asymmetry in favor of France vis-à-vis the African countries where its research is expatriated, despite many epistemological reflections.; Cet article explore les pratiques sociales et académiques françaises en Afrique via l’Institut de Recherche pour le Développement.
