The most recent monographs concerning the Elateridae Coleoptera of French fauna date back to 1930. None of these deal with species peculiar to Corsica. The present work is an attempt to bring up to date the information gathered since then in the field of systematics, adult ecology, and the geographical distribution of species. It consists of 381 pages illustrated with 384 drawings, most of which being originals. The first part is devoted to generalities concerning the family : morphology, saltatory ability, general ecology, collecting and breeding methods, faunistics, and preparation methods. The second part is a critical study of species known so far in continental France and Corsica. This fauna is composed of 202 species divided into 52 genus and 15 subfamilies. The Denticollidae Jagemann family is considered as a subfamily. The following species generally considered as belonging to French fauna have been eliminated : Cardiophorus rubripes Germar, Athous vil-lardi Carret, Selatosomus tibiellus Chevr. The following synonymies have been established : Athous frigid !us Muls.-Guill. = Athous casta-nescens Muls.-Guill., Cardiophorus vestigialis Er. = Cardiophorus ru-fipes Goeze var. atripes Buyss. One particular species has been translated to another genus : Hypnoidus grouvellei Buyss. becomes Selatosomus grouvellei (Buysson). A new species has been described : Athous iablokoffi nov. Athous galiberti Buyss. so far described from one unique male specimen, has been described anew from 47 specimen including the female, which was unknown up to now. Two species which were recently discovered in France have been added to the list : Athous lateralis Bris. (Iberic species) and Denticollis borealis Payk. (boreo-alpine species). Furthermore, the following varieties especially noteworthy have been named : Ampedus corsicus Reitt. var. chassaini nov. ; idem var. ni-colasi nov. ; idem var. rabili nov. ; Athous canus Dufour var. chassaini nov. ; Athous galiberti Buyss. var. boubersi nov. ; Agriotes corsicus Cand. var. piceipennis nov. ; Adrastus lacertosus Er. var. nicolasi nov. ; Adrastus pallens F. var. unicolor nov. The chapter dealing with systematics includes : a key for sub¬ families, keys for genus, and keys for species. A key for the Sterno-xiaria Jeannel superfamily defines the position of the Elateridae family. The detailed study of the species includes for each one of them : synonymy, reference bibliography, adult ethology and general data concerning larva ecology if known, geographical distribution, and variability. Since the last part of the Coleopterorum Catalogus Junk was printed in 1927, the bibliography has been restricted to publications following that date except for certain works and papers of special importance. It includes 281 titles. References to the Junk Catalogus enables the readers to consult older bibliography. The work ends with an alphabetical index of sub-families, genus, sub-genus, species and varieties mentioned in the text., Leseigneur Lucien.
