The Oyapock River has been the border between France and Brazil since the Treaty of Bern came to resolve a centuries-old dispute between the two states. Only populated by indigenous communities and a few adventurers, the two banks of the river are untouched by any lasting colonial and national settlement before the second half of the 19th century. Penal colonization is the formula adopted by the two states to fill the "void" of a border to be formalized. In my research I have processed the legal documents of József Zlinszky written in Latin and Hungarian. His land lay on the so-called triple boundary between Irsa, Mikebuda and Cegléd in the 18th-century. Zlinszky had many conflicts with his neighbours due to the unsettled boundaries which often resulted in lawsuits. The only purpose of these lawsuits was to increase the laimant’s territories, since the origin of wealth was landed property at this time. The relevant letters, legal papers and records show us how boundary walks were organized and how the proceedings happened in general. Furthermore, we get an insight into the 18 th-century life: the documents reveal the answers for questions like how important religion and faith were, how boundaries were interpreted by the people, or what kind of role a shepherd could have in a proceeding.

The political and territorial claims of France and Germany over Alsace have found echoes in the discourse of art historians. In addition to the historical, geographical, ethnic, and linguistic arguments, which were advanced to demonstrate the right of ownership of the province between the Vosges and the Rhine, an important role was played by the debate about art, in which the notions of school and artistic geography were constantly defined and redefined. Along with the hard-line speeches -- national/nationalistic -- which monopolyzed the debates, by offering two parallel and antithetical views, there was a third speech, the regionalist one, moderate and unsuccessful by definition, through which it was always proposed an ambiguous, evasive and/or oscillating approach.
