In this paper we review the „Corpus Oral de Referencia de la Lengua Española Contempóranea“. This corpus is a carefully compiled text collection of orthographically transcribed recordings of oral conversations. As it was compiled as a reference corpus, it provides texts of different styles and registers and has a considerable size of about 1,100,000 words. CORLEC therefore is an important resource for researchers interested in the field of spoken language. The Corpus is freely available as SGML-based-files or plain-text-files. As both variants are similar in their structure and content, the review addresses the two formats. The review first provides some background information and an overview of the structure of the corpus. Then, the transcription files are described in their structure and content. Eventually, a short overview of the integration of the corpus into other projects and a résumé are given.

An approach for LIDAR-based localization at high speeds is presented. In the proposed framework, the laser pose estimation is treated as a parallel redundant information, which is fused in an adjacent Kalman filter. The measurement and motion update step of the ROS-based adaptive Monte Carlo localization package is modified, in order to meet the requirements of a high-speed race scenario. Thereby, the key focus is on computational efficiency and the adaptation to characteristics arising at high speeds and at the limits of handling. An introspective performance evaluation monitors the position estimation process and labels generated outputs for adjacent components accordingly. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is illustrated in a real world high-speed experiment, autonomously driving a race vehicle – the DevBot – in a typical race environment.

Since 2001, the Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology (IPT) at the University of Basel and the Mendeleyev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (MUCTR) have established an institutional partnership (IP), which is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) in the framework of the SCOPES (Scientific Cooperation between Eastern Europe and Switzerland) project. The results of this collaboration are the new teaching technologies that were introduced at the MUCTR and the IPT. The former include multimedia lectures in pharmaceutical technology, which are held in parallel at University of Basel and MUCTR, and the educational web-portal 'Pharmacy online', which was awarded a medal at the 4th Moscow International Salon of Innovations. The multimedia lectures are popular with and helpful for MUCTR students, because they can compensate to a certain extent the lack of equipment at the MUCTR. However, multimedia lectures can never replace hands-on training and therefore the continuation of the collaboration is ongoing. In this respect SNF decided in 2005 to give continuous support for this cooperation through the grant entitled 'New Concepts in Training Industrial Pharmacists and Pharmaceutical Engineers to Be Developed and Implemented at the Russian-Swiss Scientific and Education Centre in MUCTR'. This centre was established as a result of the previous grant. The development and implementation of a unique and innovative learning concept on the basis of the Russian-Swiss scientific and educational centre involving the Russian pharmaceutical and biotechnological industry, is an ongoing activity.

The Industrial Pharmacy Lab (IPL) was founded in 2001 and has been awarded the NETS Award and NETS Special Award of the Gebert Rüf Foundation, Basel in 2004. The IPL is a turning platform between the university and the pharmaceutical industry at the Pharma Hub Basel with the focus on research in powder technology, dosage form design and scale-up. The IPL works with industrial-sized equipment and applies new and state-of-the-art technologies to the development of robust formulations. In the present article the research fields granulation process control, formulation of low water soluble drugs, modified release, and impact of the filling process on protein solutions are introduced and critical parameters, sources of variability, and scale-up problems are identified in order to suggest and provide a rational and optimal formulation and process for pharmaceutical dosage form design.

We report a case of infectious orbital cellulitis complicating a frontal sinusitis in a seventy-three-year-old patient. The onset of this orbital complication was sudden. A clinical examination and an orbital CT-scan allowed an early diagnosis. Despite an appropriate surgical and medical treatment, the patient retains an altered visual function. We consider the clinical causes and consequences of orbital cellulitis as well as their surgical indications.

We report a rare case of periorbital necrotizing fasciitis following a dacryocystorhinostomy procedure. We describe the common features of this rare infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissues and discuss the different management strategies as well as the controversial role of anti-inflammatory medication in treating this condition., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS. Ocular side effects associated with biphosphonates have been described. Conjunctivitis, uveitis and scleritis are the most common adverse events. We report a case of bilateral toxic optic neuropathy with optic dies edema occurring soon after a pamidronate intravenous infusion in a patient who previously presented both a conjunctivitis and an uveitis of moderate intensity associated with alendronate therapy.

The aim of this human research protocol is to determine the efficacy of using preserved human amniotic membrane for reconstruction surgery for ocular surface. Case report and literature will be presented. The characteristics of a new surgical approach using human amniotic membrane will be described.

Among photosensitive patients, the use of colored filters sometimes leads to a clear improvement of comfort. After a general review of theory, we start on the way we take care of these patients and the way filters are fitted and made. We only present here a preliminary work. A subsequent study or accurate informations of colored filters will be published later. The aim is to set up a methodic procedure in order to find the best selection of the recommended spectral curve and the best way to follow the progress of the patient as regards the wearing and the effect of the filter. An overview of our cases is presented.

Researches related in this study were done on normal optic papillae. Their aim is to measure: a) the surface of the optic disc, the surface of the cup and the surface of the rim surrounding the cup; b) the depth of the cup; c) the diameters of the disc, the diameters of the cup and the width of the rim. Photographs were taken with a stereoscopic fundus camera and analysed by photogrammetry. There is a positive correlation between: a) the surface of the disc and the surface of the cup; b) the surface of the disc and the surface of the rim; c) the surface of the disc and the depth of the cup; d) the diameters of the disc and the diameters of the cup. There is no correlation between the diameter of the disc and the width of the rim. The ratio C/D is high when the disc is large.
