Background: Arts and Humanities (A/H) training is a powerful strategy to help medical students develop key competencies which align with the CanMEDS roles that Canadian physicians are expected to embody. Students with backgrounds in A/H may enter medical school with the skills and dispositions that A/H training provides. This paper explores the varied experiences of medical students with prior A/H backgrounds, with an emphasis on how they navigate relationships with their student cohorts and participate in undergraduate medical training environments. Methods: Descriptive qualitative research methodology was used to conduct and analyze semi-structured interviews exploring the perspectives of Canadian medical students with either a A/H degree or training in A/H (n = 13). Domains such as identity, integration of interests, and challenges in maintaining A/H interests during medical training were explored. Results: Participants described their A/H identity as intertwined with their identity as medical trainees and described their sense of interconnection between the disciplines. Challenges included imposter syndrome and difficulties in relating with peers from science backgrounds. Participants described returning to their A/H interests as a tool for wellness amidst medical training. Conclusions: Medical students with a background in A/H training describe this background as offering both affordances and challenges for their sense of identity, belonging, and wellness. These students offer an untapped resource: they come with dispositions of value to medicine, and they perceive a positive, hidden A/H curriculum that supports their maintenance of these dispositions during training. Understanding more about these hidden treasures could help foster the development of well-rounded and humanistic physicians in the entire medical class.

The interactions between hazard exposure, social vulnerability, and physical vulnerability conditions cause major impacts during disasters. Infrastructure and housing problems are given more importance and considered as the root of many other concerns. As a self-disaster recovery approach, earthen construction techniques have gained greater acceptance due to the utilization of local materials, indigenous building practices that do not depend on highly skilled paid labour, and affordability. Earthen construction techniques are practiced globally, in various geographical conditions adapted to serve as site-specific hazard mitigation measures. This study utilized Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) techniques, to examine the vernacular earthen practices of the Rajanga village of Dhenkanal District, Odisha State, India, and performed a qualitative analysis of its disaster resilience capacity. This village is located in a very high-damage risk zone for wind and cyclones. Findings suggest that PRA methods are effective in exploring construction practices and conducting a cause-issue-effect analysis after synthesizing various PRA inputs. Poor housing conditions in the village are due to a deterioration of various building elements and lack of hazard-resistant features increasing the vulnerability to disasters. In conclusion, PRA methods can be utilized as an effective tool for the exchange of knowledge between researchers and rural community members at large, for initiating a co-design process and conducting capacity building. Earthen construction methods have a greater potential for sustainable development, where it is engineered using traditional knowledge and new knowledge and incorporated with disaster-resilient features.

In the current work, Investigation of a cube, cylinder, and beams cast of M35 grade by replacing 5,10,15 and 20 percent of rubber tyre with fine aggregate as well as 0.5%,1%,1.5%, and 2% of conplast SP430 superplasticizer were added respectively and their properties were articulated. Waste tyre concrete, also known as rubberized concrete, is an innovative and sustainable construction material that addresses both environmental concerns and the need for enhanced concrete properties. The waste tyre rubber inclusion in concrete not only decreases the environmental effect of tyre disposal but also enhances the concrete’s mechanical and durability characteristics. The process of producing waste tyre concrete involves shredding and grinding waste tyres into small rubber particles, which are then mixed with cement, fine aggregates, and water to form the concrete mixture. The appropriate mix design ensures an optimal balance between rubber content and other ingredients to achieve the desired performance. From the study, it is endorsed that 10 percent of rubber tyre partially replace the fine aggregate which provides the optimum compressive strength of 36.42 N/mm2 using a superplasticizer. The rubber concrete of 10% replacement shows an improvement of 1.6 times when compared with the traditional concrete.

The aim of this research was to enable easier access to the food value of coconut for humanity. There was a span of time from the 1950s-1990s where much media coverage discouraged the consumption of coconut, even though it was used in the West since the 16th century. This started due to the supply cut off during WW2, thereby Western researchers had to enable humans to consume corn and soybean oil which had become an established industry by the end of WW2. Therefore, propaganda was used to defame coconut oil. The main argument was that coconut oil has a high percentage of saturated fats, neglecting the fact that a huge sample of humans in Asia have been consuming it for millenniums. Later Western researchers realized that the balance between LDL and HDL is more important and coconut has a good balance. This caused a resurgence in consumption. The biggest problem with coconut is accessing the coconut meat through the hard husk and shell. Therefore, two setups were designed and developed in this work. The first setup enables cutting the coconut fast with utmost safety and environmental benefit and the second setup enables grinding out the coconut meat.

For the former colony, decolonization is a dialogue with the colonial past, and not a simple dismantling of colonial habits and modes of life. Nowhere are the complexities and ambiguities of this dialogue more evident than in the vicissitudes of cricket in those countries that were once part of the British Empire. In the Indian case, the cultural aspects of decolonization deeply affect every domain of public life, from language and the arts to ideas about political representation and economic justice. ln every major public debate in contemporary India, one underlying strand is always the question of what to do with the shreds and patches of the Colonial heritage. Some of these patches are institutional; others are ideological and aesthetic.

In our present investigation we propose to study and develop the I-function of two variables analogous to the I-function of one variable introduced and studied by one of the authors [25]. The conditions for convergence, series representation, behaviour for small values, elementary properties, transformation formulas and some special cases for the I-function of two variables are also discussed.

Carbon materials with high porosity and surface area such as activated carbons with a combination of metal possess great materials to obtain maximum hydrogen adsorption via the hydrogen spillover effect. The properties of activated carbon doped with metals (copper, nickel and palladium) were studied to evaluate the capacity of hydrogen sorption on the materials. Characteristics of the activated carbon doped with copper (AC-Cu), nickel (AC-Ni) and palladium (AC-Pd) were evaluated using particle density test, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and surface and pore analysis (BET). The performance of hydrogen adsorption of the materials was carried out at different pressures of 50, 100 and 150 psi. Characterization of the materials shows that FTIR spectroscopy manage to detect surface functional groups meanwhile the carbon structure and metal content was determined using XRD. BET analysis shows the presence of oxygen groups was decrease the specific surface area whereas the presence of transition metals had increased the surface area. Hydrogen adsorption test at 150 psi indicates that oxygen groups are not a good adsorption characteristic with only a maximum of 0.39 wt% of hydrogen was adsorbed compared to pristine activated carbon’s 0.42 wt% at 150 psi. The presence of transition metals, copper, nickel and palladium increased the overall hydrogen uptake with 0.52 wt%, 0.44 wt% and 0.62 wt% respectively at 150 psi.

Fossil fuel based energy sources are most commonly used because of the ease of availability and affordability, but have many long lasting negative effects, due to which a shift must be made to renewable and clean energy sources such as solar energy. Efficiency of the photovoltaic cells have increased by 1% every ten months, resulting in reduced costs and increased number of users. The project will explore the design and fabrication of an improved and efficient solar tapping device. An effort will be made to incorporate an architectural concept called “barrel vault” that is primarily used for natural lighting, over a Fresnel lens plate setup to act as a collector. The tracking mechanism incorporated is unique and can be modified to either have single axis or dual axis tracking depending on the requirements. Keeping in mind the environment and cost, an attempt has been made to fabricate the product with higher energy conversion rate, at an affordable cost using the above techniques. Upon analysing the results, the conclusion could be drawn that there was an increase in conversion rate of up to twice the traditional setup.

En estos estudios se había identificado la incertidumbre social como catalizador para este tipo de violencia, conclusión de la que se sirve para este análisis de la globalización. Siendo éste un fenómeno que no hace sino crear incertidumbres, la violencia étnica que se desencadena en este contexto resulta brutal.

In this paper a natural generalization of the familiar H -function of Fox namely the I -function is proposed. Convergence conditions, various series representations, elementary properties and special cases for the I -function have also been given.

The aim of this paper is to obtain single series expression for e-x/2 1F1(α;2 α+i;x) for i=1 and i=-1. For i=0, we have the well known Kummer's second theorem. The results are derived with the help of generalized Gauss's second summation theorem recently obtained by Lavoie, Grondin and Rathie.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of the study was to identify the predictive factors for malignancy in pancreatic head mass as a primary outcome and assess the value of CA 19-9 as a diagnostic tool for malignancy as a secondary outcome.

Nail Patella Syndrome (NPS) is a rare hereditary disease affecting multiple systems with predominant involvement of Kidney, Bones and Nails and Eyes. We report a case of NPS which presented as renal failure in a 22 year old male. The patient was admitted with decreased urine output and features of fluid overload and was being evaluated for renal failure. Physical examination revealed associated bony deformities which raised the suspicion of NPS as a possible etiology. This was confirmed by the radiological evaluation which showed the classical features of NPS. Though NPS is a rare clinical condition, physicians should complete knowledge about the components of NPS for appropriate diagnosis and for early detection of other systems involvement.

Cationic amphiphilic diblock copolymers were synthesized by RAFT polymerization and the nanostructure of their monolayers was investigated by π-A isotherm and X-ray reflectivity. Carpet layer (dense hydrophilic block layer) formation under the hydrophobic layer was confirmed and a “brush” layer was found beneath the carpet layer. However, the thickness of brush layer was much thinner than that of the fully-stretched chain length. The critical salt concentration was found to be 0.01 M NaCl, which is much lower than that of the previous strongly anionic brush. These differences were probably caused by the low effective charge on the brush chains due to the hydrophobic nature of the quarternized ammonium cation.
