Within the framework of the Thaenae archaeological field-school, excavations were carried out from 2017 to 2022 by a Tunisian-French team in the vicinity of the Tacape Gate in order to contribute to the study of the urban evolution of the city, marked, in Late Antiquity, by the construction of a wall whose area is larger than that of the Early Imperial city. On the basis of cross-referenced field and laboratory data (coins, ceramics and radiocarbon), it has been shown that this wall was built in the first half of the 4th century (perhaps as early as the first quarter of the century) by including the funerary spaces and craft workshops, which were then moved outside the new wall. The monumental character of this wall and the care taken in its construction argue in favour of a prestigious operation testifying to the economic and political vitality of the city of Thaenae in the years preceding or following the advent of the Constantinian dynasty.

The ongoing renovation of the Sfax Archaeological Museum and the current research within the framework of the Thaenae field site provided an opportunity between 2020 and 2022 to re-examine the material discovered by M. Fendri in a survey he carried out in 1964 in the northern necropolis of the town. He discovered a mausoleum, several secondary cremation burials composed of stelae and urns, a cupula burial and funerary material (lamps, glass, coins). He preserved the bones in three urns and their investigation, fifty years later using the new methods of archaeothanatology, provides new data on the funerary practices carried out in this city, which was already well known for the exceptional conservation of its necropolises.

Of the over two dozen tongues that Kosinski’s best-known work has appeared in (aside from its original English), Kosinski’s Novel The Painted Bird in Thirteen Languages presents detailed scholarly analyses of the translations into selected Slavic (Polish, Russian, Serbian/Croatian, Ukrainian), Germanic (German, Norwegian), and Romance (French, Romanian, Spanish) languages, as well as Greek and Persian.

This article offers an overview of the visibility of smaller literatures in two prominent British literary translation awards: the Oxford-Weidenfeld Prize and the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation. In contextualizing this exploratory study through a brief recapitulation of the concept of smaller literatures within broader notions of world literature, attention is also paid to the increasing popularity of scholarship on translation prizes, before the British literary translation scene is presented and summarized. After outlining the form, scope, and stated aims of the two prizes, the methodology of the study is introduced, together with any possible limitations. Subsequently, and adopting a literature-based approach, the relevant websites for both awards are scrutinized to obtain the necessary data. This is then analysed and discussed, with the aim of ascertaining the extent to which smaller literatures can be said to be present in the two prizes. Finally, some preliminary conclusions and suggestions for further research on the subject are outlined.

As part of a wider project exploring literary translation in the United Kingdom, the present article profiles the three named postgraduate taught courses focusing exclusively on literary translation which are currently available at universities in the United Kingdom: the MA in Literary Translation at the University of East Anglia (UEA); the MA in Literary Translation Studies at the University of Warwick; and the MA in Audiovisual and Literary Translation at the University of Essex. After providing a concise summary of the situation regarding (literary) translator training in the British context, online sources are used to obtain information regarding the structure and course content of each of the three degree programmes under analysis. The findings are presented, contrasted, and discussed, before some proposals for further research are outlined.

With the rise of multilingual international organisations over the past eight decades, the conference interpreting profession has developed accordingly. In the case of the European Union (EU), the range of official languages now includes less widely spoken languages such as Maltese and Irish. Through examination of the domestic professional landscapes of the conference interpreting professions in two EU member states, Malta and the Republic of Ireland, this exploratory contribution offers a comparative overview of the historical and contemporary development of the domestic conference interpreting profession in both countries, together with contextual information regarding multilingualism policy and the specific cases of Maltese and Irish as official languages of the EU. As such, core details regarding education, training, and professional organisations for conference interpreters in both Malta and the Republic of Ireland are outlined and compared, thereby offering a suitable basis for subsequent empirically-based research.

The second smallest of the Slavic languages, Upper Sorbian (hornjoserbšćina) is a minority language spoken in Upper Lusatia, located in eastern Germany close to the Czech and Polish frontiers. Building on previous work, this literature-based preliminary study explores the intersection between the domains of translation and minority language education with regard to the Upper Sorbian language. Initially, a historical and contemporary overview of the relevant sociolinguistic environment is provided, which is followed by an examination of the links between translation and education in the Upper Sorbian secondary and tertiary education sectors, as well as in professional training for language professionals. In addition, particular attention is also paid to the role of Domowina Verlag, the Sorbian-language publishing house. Finally, relevant information and new developments regarding the provision of translation and interpreting within the Upper Sorbian context are also presented, and the need for further empirical research is outlined.

Although the Republic of Ireland has been a member of the European Union for nearly five decades, the country’s first official language, Irish, was only recognised as an official EU language on 1 January 2007. However, a lack of appropriately qualified linguistic personnel means that the language is currently subject to a derogation on its use in the EU institutions, which is scheduled to be lifted in 2022. Interviews conducted previously with interpreters in the Republic of Ireland (Hoyte-West 2020a) noted that practitioners generally viewed media coverage of the derogation as contributing to a positive image of the translational professions within the EU context; however, further research needed to be carried out on the topic. Accordingly, this article looks at how institutional translators and interpreters have been depicted in the Republic of Ireland’s English-language print media from 2007 to 2019. Using data obtained through a qualitative content analysis of the country’s three major English-language newspapers, an overview of the current situation is provided through analysis of the attitudes and opinions expressed.

Although the Republic of Ireland is a bilingual country,this study illustrates that there are comparatively few domestic training options available for interpreters of spoken languages. In providing an overview of the present state of affairs, this article contextualises the current linguistic situation both within the country and at the European level. Attention is paid to the recognition of Irish as an official language of the European Union (EU), as well as tothe corresponding implications for interpreter training. In addition, the domestic situation regarding community interpreters is also outlined, with the lack of official regulation of the interpreting profession also noted. Subsequently, the options for interpreter training in tertiary education are outlined, both at the undergraduate and the postgraduate level. In addition, relevant information regarding the structure and content of the modules and courses is provided. To conclude, some thoughts regarding potential developments of interpreter training in the Irish context are outlined.

In 2011, an archaeological evaluation was carried out in the centre of the Roman city of Augustodunum (Autun) on a plot of over 1 ha. This operation afforded the opportunity to explore parts of two insulae along the main street, the so-called cardo maximus, an area that has benefited from recent advances in knowledge. The first insula hosts a high-status domus strongly resembling those of “Balbius Iassus” and the “Étui d’Or”, excavated in the vicinity in the 1970s; the second, addressed in this paper, contains the remains of a vast monumental complex covering approximately 900 m2. Most probably built at the beginning of the 2nd c. on the ruins of earlier houses, it was thoroughly restructured at the end of the 3rd c. or the beginning of the 4th and seems to have been abandoned then partly dismantled from the start of the 5th c. To judge by its plan and its situation within a residential area located in the immediate vicinity of the monumental centre, the building of the beginning of the late-antique period exhibits the functional and topographical features of a schola of exceptional size. Comparison with literary sources would seem to indicate that the remains are those of the scholae Maenianae, known from a speech delivered in AD 298 by Eumenius, a local notable, in the presence of the governor of Gallia Lugdunensis. Only further excavation and the discovery of an inscription could definitively prove this initial hypothesis. The discovery of such a vast complex, whatever function is assigned to it, vividly illustrates the importance of the monumental equipment of Autun under the Early Empire as well as the restoration work that took place in the city at the turn of the 300s.
