Purpose: To evaluate the visual outcomes, the incidence of glistenings and posterior capsule opacification in a series of consecutive eyes with a new blue light-filtering hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) SETTING: Service d'ophtalmologie, clinique Beausoleil, avenue de Lodève, Montpellier., Design: Retrospective, cross-sectional study., Methods: This study included a series of 66 eyes that underwent routine cataract surgery with PODEye (PhysIOL SA, Liège, Belgium) monofocal IOL implantation between May 2011 and November 2011. These eyes were compared for glistenings with patients implanted with Acrysof material IOL (Alcon, Fort Worth, USA) who had a routine postoperative examination between January 2015 and August 2015. The safety of the IOL was assessed by visual acuity outcomes, as well as rotational stability, centration and postoperative medication. The incidence and severity of glistenings were evaluated with the slit lamp. Glistenings and PCO were graded subjectively (0=absent; 1=moderate; 2=dense). Follow-up was 3 years., Results: The mean visual acuity after PODEye implantation was 0.98±0.05 (n=50) in decimal notation at 1 year, 0.98±0.06 at 1 week, (n=66), 1.00±0.01 at 3 weeks (n=64) and 0.99±0.02 at 3 months (n=59). The IOL displayed stable positioning in all axes. Glistenings of grade 2 were absent in the G-Free/PODEye group, whereas they were significantly present in the Acrysof group. One out of 43 eyes at 3-year follow-up underwent YAG capulotomy at 37 months. Sixty-six percent of eyes had no PCO (grade 0) at 3 years., Conclusions: The PODEye IOL was safe and stable. Glistenings grade 2 or more were not found with this blue light-filtering hydrophobic acrylic IOL. PCO occurrence was low at three years., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Masson SAS. Background: By definition, stomatodynia or burning-mouth syndrome involves oral pain with no causes being found on history taking or examination. An allergic origin is often suspected by doctors and patients alike. In this study, we attempted to assess the value of epicutaneous tests in demonstrating allergic causes for patients presenting stomatodynia., Patients and Methods: This was a single-centre retrospective study of patients undergoing epicutaneous tests between 1996 and 2003 to screen for allergic causes of mouth pain not accounted for by any abnormalities seen during examination performed at consultations for mouth disease., Results: Forty patients were included (11 male, 29 female; mean age: 58 years), and 39 were excluded. Sixteen patients presented at least one positive test, with a total of 35 positive tests in all. In decreasing order of frequency, the causes were metals, mercury derivatives (nickel salts: n=5; chrome salts: n=3; palladium salts: n=2; phenylmercuric acetate: n=2; thiomersal: n=2; cobalt salts: n=1; gold salts: n=1; mercury: n=1) and resins (acrylates: n=4). The relevance of these test results was considered probable in three cases and possible in five cases, associated with the existence of metals or resins in patients' mouths. The Peru balm test was positive in four cases but was not relevant. Tests for personal products were negative in all cases, with the exception of one case of resin from a prosthesis and one case of tixocortol pivalate., Comments: Type I stomatodynia (daily occurrence with gradually increase in discomfort throughout the day) and type II stomatodynia (permanent) are not normally attributable to allergies. However, for type III stomatodynia (non-permanent, with acute episodes followed by remission), an allergy survey guided by questioning may be undertaken to determine the cause, primarily prostheses or diet. The relevance of positive test results must be interpreted with caution in view of the incidence of positive epicutaneous tests for metals and Peru balm among the general population studied.

Purpose: Advances in composite materials for craniofacial reconstruction surgery has tended to limit indications for osteomuscular free flaps which nevertheless must be used for certain septic patients. The purpose of this report was to illustrate the usefulness of the free temoroparietal osteomuscular flap in this particular situation., Case Report: A 47-year-old man underwent surgical repair of an aneurysm of the anterior communicating artery complicated by acute hydrocephaly treated by external then ventriculoperitoneal bypass. The fronto-pteryonal approach was used. The early postoperative period was complicated by osteitis of the cranial piece requiring revision. The revision procedure, performed at the end of the septic period, involved cranioplasty with acrylic cement. Recurrent infection contraindicated any new attempt for prosthetic repair. The patient was treated with a controlateral free temporoparietal osteomuscular flap to achieve cranioplasty. The postoperative period was uneventful with no infection and satisfactory healing. Flap vitality was very satisfactory. The patient's neurological status improved and no further complication developed., Discussion: In certain therapeutic situations, several diffent techniques may be required to overcome postoperative complications or manage particularly difficult cases. A free osteomuscular flap can be a useful alternative for cranioplasty. This technique is rarely used but can offer an optimal solution in selected patients, particularly for second intention revision after failure of prosthetic repair.

Although venous escape of cement has been frequently noted during percutaneous vertebroplasty, no case of pulmonary embolus directly linked to this manoeuvre has been described in the literature. We report a case of pulmonary embolus of acrylic cement occurring immediately after the procedure. Outcome was favorable following anticoagulant therapy despite the persistence of some vascular obstruction suggesting the association of residual fibrinous matter in the pulmonary artery.

The use of a silicone base under a total prosthesis makes possible the solution of certain problems of tolerance or maintenance of such denture. I.--Full denture in patients who have received radiotherapy. II.--Full denture with intolerant mucosa. III.--Following failure of classical prosthesis. IV--Prosthesis fitted following pre-prosthetic surgery. The technical problems associated with the fabrication of such prosthesis and possible adjustements are discussed.

In the plant of a large newspaper, the manufacture of printing plates using photopolymer acrylic resins, in the place of lead, resulted in a series of orthoergic and allergic manifestations in the workers. Chemical analysis resulted in the isolation of a tetraethylene glycol diacrylate, the harmful nature of which was proven by allergological studies. Its replacement by tetrathylene glycol dimethacrylate eliminated the problems seen (study based upon 300 allergological tests).
