Marchica lagoon, a Ramsar site on Morocco's Mediterranean coast, has emerged as a prominent tourist destination within the Mediterranean region. However, the summer tourism is often accompanied by a rise in waste accumulation, especially on the surrounding beaches. The focus of this study is a detailed analysis of marine litter found on the beaches near Marchica Lagoon, specifically Al Mohandis, Bocana, and Nador Artificial Beach. The data collection for this study was carried out over a three-day period prior to the summer season in June 2023. The methodology adhered to the established protocols of the "Guidance on Monitoring of Marine Litter in European Seas." A total of 731 items of marine debris were collected from these three beaches, with an overall weight of 20395 kg. The composition of the collected debris revealed that polymer materials were the most prevalent, accounting for 81% of the total debris, followed by paper/cardboard (6.3%), metal (6.2%), processed wood (2.9%), glass/ceramics (1.9%), and cloth/textile (1.78%). The analysis indicates that the majority of the marine debris is associated with the activities of beach visitors. It is recommended that public awareness initiatives be implemented and solid waste management practices improved.

This study consists to conduct an environmental SWOT analysis to assess Marchica lagoon and its watershed within the framework of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). Recognized as a Ramsar site since 2005, the lagoon is located on the eastern Mediterranean coast of Morocco and offers a variety of ecosystem services. In response to substantial anthropogenic stress, the Moroccan government initiated a restoration plan since 2010 aimed at safeguarding these ecosystem services. Our analysis reveals that, despite restoration efforts, the lagoon is still adversely impacted by its watershed, including the discharge of wastewater, sometimes untreated. A significant environmental limitation identified is the inadequate integration of the “watershed-lagoon” spatial dimension in the lagoon’s management. Consequently, we recommend for the implementation of restoration measures upstream, especially in regions that exert influence on the lagoon. These actions are crucial to ensuring compliance with the spatial integration principles of the ICZM Protocol under the Barcelona Convention, promoting a more holistic and effective approach to ecosystem management.

The Mediterranean Sea has been characterized in recent years by marine litter pollution. Our study aims to quantify waste flows in two watersheds in the northern Mediterranean region of Morocco. For Laou wadi and Martil wadi, floating and bank-accumulated waste was monitored during the autumn 2022 and spring 2023 seasons respectively. The results revealed that for Laou wadi, 384 objects/100 m were collected on the banks with a density of 0.20 objects/m2, and "plastic/polystyrene" constituted the main component of the total debris collected representing 57.19% in number of pieces, followed by "glass/ceramic" with 28.44%. For Martil wadi, 4715 objects/100 m were collected, with a density of 6.74 objects/m2, and "plastic/polystyrene" also constituted the main component of the total debris collected with 94.38%. The debris recorded are mainly associated with waste discharge along the river banks. It is therefore recommended to improve solid waste management and activate environmental control in the two Mediterranean basins studied in order to protect the Mediterranean Sea.

Marine litter pollution is one of the world’s major environmental challenges. In the Mediterranean, marine litter on beaches is mainly generated by tourism and recreational activities. The present study is part of an "Adopt-a-Beach" pilot project, initiated as part of the Marine Litter MED (ML MED) project, coordinated by the United Nations Environment Programme UNEP/MAP. The main objective of this work was to assess and quantify marine litter on four beaches along Morocco’s Mediterranean coast (Merkala Tanger, Amsa Tetouan, Sabadia Al Hoceima, and Miami Nador) over a seasonal cycle during 2018–2019, in line with UNEP/MAP guidelines. On average, 1768 items/100 m were collected from the four beaches, with a density of 0.34 items/m2. "Plastic/polystyrene" was the main component of the total debris collected, accounting for 74.1% in number of items, followed by "paper/cardboard" at 6.4%. The dominant categories of top 10 items were "plastic/polystyrene pieces < 50 cm" (G76), "cigarette butts and filters" (G27), "plastic caps and lids" (G21/24), and "crisps packets/sweets wrappers" (G30/31) that all comprised 49.9% of the total items. Tourism and recreational wastes were the most represented sources at 52%.

Synovial cyst of the proximal tibiofibular joint is a very rare condition, for which there is no consensus regarding treatment. Two macroscopic forms may be encountered: extraneural cysts and intraneural cysts. We present the cases of two patients who had synovial cysts of proximal tibiofibular joint that caused peroneal nerve palsy. We discussed the special features of synovial cysts and reviewed the literature. We considered the best treatment of synovial cysts originating from proximal tibiofibular joint and causing peroneal nerve palsy to be a total surgical removal as soon as possible after the diagnosis is made. However, follow-up is needed because recurrence is possible. It should be kept in mind that despite surgical treatment the neurological symptoms may not recover.

Triplane fractures of the proximal tibia are less well known than the distal extremity. The diagnosis is based on a good analysis of X-rays and possibly CT images to better plan the management. The authors reports a triplane fracture of the proximal tibial in a 12 years old boy treated by closed reduction and internal fixation. To our knowledge, only a dozen cases have been reported in the literature with generally a good evolution of the fracture.

Our objective through this work is to purify the biogas produced by a methanisation process in order to be valorized in a cogeneration unit. The studied biogas is mainly composed of methane 60% and carbon dioxide 39%. The treatment will increase the quality of the biogas by decreasing the percentage of CO2, in order to improve the energetic properties of the gas mixture (PCI). Several biogas purification and bio-methane production processes are commercialized. The choice of the technical and economic optimum is strongly linked to the quality and quantity of biogas to be purified, the quality of the desired bio-methane, depends on the type of methanisation, the nature and regularity of the substrate supply, but also on the local conditions of implantation. In this part of our research project, we are interested in the study, dimensioning and modeling of a CO2 capture unit by chemical absorption, constituted by a packed column. The solvent used is the secondary amines in mixture with the primary amines.

La procalcitonine (PCT) est un marqueur de gravité du sepsis, dont la valeur absolue et la cinétique sont corrélées à la sévérité de l'infection. On rapporte le cas d'un patient qui présente une PCT très élevée sans relation avec un sepsis. Il s'agit d'un homme âgé de 55 ans, admis en rhumatologie pour des lombosciatalgies hyperalgiques fébriles. Le bilan biologique a montré une hyperleucocytose à 15000 élément/mm3 à prédominance neutrophile, associée à une CRP et une PCT sériques, respectivement à 305 mg/l et 2,5ng/ml. Devant ce tableau évocateur de sepsis, des hémocultures étaient réalisées et un traitement antibiotique probabiliste était instauré. L'absence d'évolution favorable du malade ainsi que la discordance entre les chiffres de la PCT demeurant très élevés et les hémocultures négatives, une IRM dorso-lombaire était réalisée. Elle a objectivé une arthrite de la hanche droite, associée à des lésions osseuses multiples secondaires du squelette axial évoquant une origine néoplasique. Une TDM thoraco-abdomino-pelvienne a montré la présence d'une masse pulmonaire gauche. La biopsie pulmonaire a révélé un adénocarcinome infiltrant.

Le pyo-pneumothorax tuberculeux est une complication rare mais grave de la tuberculose pulmonaire évolutive. Nous rapportons une série de 18 cas de pyo-pneumothorax tuberculeux colligés au service de Pneumo-Phtisiologie de l'Hôpital Militaire d'Instruction Mohammed V de Rabat entre janvier 2005 et décembre 2009. Il s'agit de 15 hommes et 3 femmes d'âge moyen de 35 ans 7 ans. 4 patients étaient diabétiques. Le tabagisme était retrouvé chez 9 cas. Le pyo-pneumothorax était du coté droit dans 13 cas. La radiographie thoracique avait montré des lésions cavitaires chez 15 patients et des lésions étendues et bilatérales chez 8 cas. La recherche de BK dans le liquide de tubage gastrique était positive chez 16 cas. Un drainage thoracique associé à un traitement antituberculeux selon le régime 2SRHZ/7RH et une kinésithérapie respiratoire ont été instaurés chez tous les cas. La durée moyenne de drainage pleural était de 4 semaines. Chez 3 cas on avait noté la persistance de la suppuration pleurale ayant nécessité une toilette pleurale sous thoracoscopie avec pleurectomie et exérèse pulmonaire limitée emportant la lésion parenchymateuse tuberculeuse et la persistance d'une volumineuse poche pleurale avec trouble ventilatoire restrictif ayant nécessité une décortication pleurale chirurgicale chez deux cas. L'évolution était favorable avec pachypleurite séquellaire minime chez le reste des cas. Le pyo-pneumothorax tuberculeux est une forme grave, qui est souvent en rapport avec une tuberculose cavitaire active. L'évolution est généralement trainante malgré le traitement antituberculeux et le drainage thoracique, d'où la nécessité d'un diagnostic et un traitement précoce de toute forme de tuberculose.

Abtract: Digestive symptoms in HIV patients are frequent and little-known. Their management varies from symptomatic treatment to specialised care by the gastroenterologist. Our aim is to determine these manifestations in HIV patients through a retrospective study including all HIV-positive patients followed at the University Hospital of Fez. These manifestations were essentially liquid diarrhoea in 62 patients (27%), epigastralgia in 40 patients (17.5%), chronic abdominal pain in 10 patients (5%), apyretic hepatic colic in six patients and defecatory rectorrhagia (n = 4, 2.8%). Complications such as post-viral B cirrhosis with ascitic decompensation occurred in one patient (0.4%) and an association with IBD was found in three patients. Complications such as liver abscesses and lymphoma were also reported. Our study is the first large-scale study in Morocco to focus solely on digestive manifestations in HIV patients, and provides a gastroenterologist's perspective on the management of this complex pathology.
