- Abstract
This study compared different strategies (questions, comments, reformulations, and repetitions) used by an adult in dialogue with 17 language impaired and 24 control preschool children. Two types of co-production (a tale and a personal account) were analyzed. The stability of the distribution of the various strategies in both situations is seen as the sign of the stability of the interaction. Results for each strategy in each situation are described and interpreted. It is concluded that the multi-functionality of the four strategies is the sign of difference in managing the enunciative positions, according to the group of children and the children's ages. - Abstract
The influence of age at adoption, ethnic background, sex of adopted child, and social class of adoptive parents on the intellectual, emotional, and social development of adopted children was studied. An intragroup comparison showed that the variables studied had very little relevance. Comparison with a control group showed no significant differences on the most important variables. A second study of parents of adopted children was conducted for the purpose of testing the representativeness of the first sample. This study showed that the adopted children and their adoptive parents did not significantly differ on most important variables. (PCB)

- Abstract
Six groups of children 2- to 4-years-old were videotaped and interviewed during five 30-minute free play sessions for the purpose of investigating the evolution of children's conceptions of the process of cooperation. Children's answers were organized into six themes, each of which described some aspect of cooperative activity. For each theme, children's answers were classified according to a hierarchy of four levels. Themes included: (1) group participation; (2) activity within the group; (3) objects used in the activity; (4) rules governing the activity; (5) roles associated with the activity; and (6) coordination of actions. Findings indicate that there is no sudden appearance of a higher level of conceptualization at a given age, but rather a process of maturation of potentialities. In addition, because children's levels of conceptualization were not equivalent for each theme, an analysis of a child's conception of cooperation necessitated the use of more than a single criterion. The children's representation of cooperation was dependent on the way they organized their conceptions of the different themes, and the articulation of these themes would undergo adjustments depending on the interrelations the children were involved in. - Abstract
A discussion of French immersion education in Canada begins with a general examination of language immersion, including the historical context and social climate from which the immersion approach has grown in Canada, its beginnings in Quebec and spread throughout Canada, and the status of the approach in the United States, a number of European countries, Australia, and Nigeria. The second part of the overview focuses on the Canadian experience, looking at: the characteristics and structure of immersion programs; theoretical considerations; research on French language achievement in immersion programs, both early- and late-entry; the effects of immersion on English language development and subject area-knowledge; effects of immersion on children with learning problems or who are disadvantaged; social and psychological effects of immersion; problems encountered in implementation of immersion in Canada, including sociopolitical issues and resistance; and revisions, redefinitions, and changes in direction. The concluding part looks at the future of immersion in Canada. Contains 234 references. (MSE)

- Abstract
This report is designed to present data pertaining to Ontario from the Statistics Canada "Survey of Literacy Skills Used in Daily Activities" in which 9,500 adult Canadians were interviewed and tested. (In Ontario, 2,201 adults were interviewed and tested.) It is the first comprehensive report on the state of everyday reading skills of adults in the province. In most cases, a table and a graph provide alternate ways of looking at the information. Text in shaded boxes is intended to give background information that may be helpful in interpreting the data. Text commentary on the data is designed to provide a context for it. In some cases, data are marked with a (Q) to indicate that the number should be interpreted with caution; the actual numbers on which the estimate is based are small and the variability of the estimate is quite large. In cases where the actual numbers are so small that no reliable estimate can be provided, an asterisk marks where the results would be. Data are categorized as follows: reading skill levels of Ontario as a whole and by regions of Ontario; self-assessment of everyday reading skills; education and everyday reading; age and everyday reading; gender and everyday reading; immigration, language, and everyday reading; community and everyday reading; work and everyday reading; income and everyday reading; and daily life and everyday reading (relation of reading skill to various literate, social, cultural, and civic activities). All numbers reported here are weighted estimates (with the exception of those in Appendix C) reflecting the population of the province. Appendixes include descriptions of levels used in the survey, descriptions of survey instruments, description of survey sample, and national literacy statistics form the survey. A French language version of the report is included. (YLB)

- Abstract
In the context of recent Nova Scottian (Canada) provincial legislation establishing primarily Acadian, French-language public schools in four regions, a survey investigated local Acadians' attitudes about the roles of both French and English in these schools. Survey samples included 330 parents of primary school children and 145 parents of eleventh- and twelfth-graders in the four regions. The questionnaire gathered information on the respondent and family and measured the intensity of agreement or disagreement with statements reflecting attitudes. Seven variables were examined in addition to specific attitudes. These included general population attitudes; region; age; native language; educational attainment; language used in the home; sex; and socioeconomic status. The report analyzes the results in detail, supported by substantial statistical data, and presents detailed conclusions for each variable and parent population studied. (MSE)

- Abstract
A study of 15 fathers and their 16 sons in an italophone community in Montreal (Canada) focused on the usage of Italian, French, and English in communication between generations and in a variety of activities. Data were drawn from 45 hours of taped conversation in home and work settings, which included 4,848 instances of language contact. Of the 15,422 speaking turns taken, 50% were in Italian, 30% in French, and 20% in English. An analysis examined the language choices, language maintenance or switching at the beginning of a turn, language switching within a turn, insertion of words borrowed from another language, and insertion of proper names borrowed from another language in this population in relation to a number of individual characteristics (including generation, language competence, language of schooling, professional occupation, and ethnolinguistic family composition) and situational variables. In general, results indicate that the three languages play an important role in the italophone community. However, they are not found to be interchangeable. Italian and English were found to be used concurrently, with English gaining ground over Italian as the medium of intragroup exchange. French is more likely to be used in interactions with francophones. (Author/MSE)

- Abstract
This special issue of the "Courrier," a journal for professionals concerned with issues related to the physical and psychological development of children, provides (1) an overview of 25 years of internationally coordinated research, (2) a selection of papers published by the research teams, and (3) a description of the teams and their present status. The origin and international expansion of the program for longitudinal studies is described in the first article. The subsequent 15 articles cover a wide range of topics. Studies concerned with physical development focus on the skeletal maturation of the hand and wrist; growth in the density of normal infants' subcutaneous cellular tissue; age of onset of menarche and associated factors among Parisian girls; clinical transformations of puberty in young girls; international comparisons of infants' physical growth; development and maturation of young children in Dakar; Gessell tests on African children; parent-child correlations for body measurements of children between the ages of 1 month and 7 years; the somatic development of urban, Swedish children; and analysis of the adolescent growth spurt using smoothing spline functions. The one study focused solely on psychological development discusses intellectual development from birth to 18 years of age. Studies covering both psychological and physiological development examine bowel and bladder control during the day and at night in the first 6 years of life; trends in the development of abilities related to somatic growth; individual differences as seen in developmental and intelligence quotient curves from 6 months to 17 years; and a comparison of infant development in five western countries. Reviewed are major findings of the National Day Care Study (1986), a study intended to present to Canadians a general overview of day care services in Canada. Brief descriptions of major findings concern the increase in day care spaces, age groups served by day care programs, sponsorship of day care centers, day care spaces by province, and full-time day care spaces in Canada in relation to the number of day care age children of parents in the labor market. Tables provide data on: (1) the distribution of center spaces, family day care spaces, and day care centers by year; (2) spaces in day care centers and family day care homes by age of children served (1986); (3) sponsorship of center spaces for 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1982, 1984, 1985, and 1986; (4) sponsorship of center spaces for 1985 and 1986; (5) interprovincial comparison of day care spaces; and (6) interprovincial comparison of day care spaces by auspices. Tables 7 through 10 give data on infant day care for children from birth through 17 months of age, and for children between 18 and 36 months; between 3 and 6 years; and between 6 and 13 years. A discussion of the types and uses of stories in second language instruction argues that the inclination to narrate is an omnipresent human phenomenon, whether attributed to nature or to culture. The story is a means of self-expression and communication that describes different forms of narrative, both literary and nonliterary. Introduction: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) or Horton's disease is a segmental and focal inflammation of large and medium-sized arteries mostly seen in patients of 50 years and older. There is also a peak frequency in individuals between the ages of 70 and 80. However, clinical data is scarce in this age group and especially in patients over 80. Methods: A retrospective study comprised of patients diagnosed with Horton's arteritis between 2012 and 2017, according to the American Society of Rheumatology, was conducted at Reims University Hospital. Patients were assigned to two groups according to age (≤ 75 and < 75) in order to evaluate and compare the impact of age on diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Results: A total of 67 patients were studied. The mean age upon diagnosis was 75,85 ±8.5 years; 36 patients (53.7%) 75 years or younger and 31 patients older than 75. There was a female predominance (43 patients), 22 patients aged 75 years or younger and 21 older than 75. The mean follow up duration was 43.02 months in patients aged 75 years or younger and 30.99 in patients older than 75. This represents a difference of more than one year in terms of follow up, but is not statistically significant (p = 0.620). Eleven patients (16.4%) died during follow up: 5 patients (13.9%) aged 75 years or younger and 6 patients (19.4%) older than 75 (p = 0.547). Aortitis was significantly less seen in patients older than 75 (p = 0.0410). Conclusion: Our study showed no significant difference in either age group. However, aortitis was less seen in patients older than 75 years. Patients aged 75 or younger seemed more prone to relapses, but their follow up periods were shorter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Objectives: The objective of this study is to describe the emotional functioning of individuals addicted to psychoactive substances, and verify that the dependent subjects are more sensitive to emotional dimensions and variables considered as non-dependent subjects. Patients and methods: We recruited 268 subjects students. They filled out a protocol, first, a questionnaire assessment measuring dependencies (tobacco, alcohol, cannabis), and a second part consisting of four questionnaires: the Hospital Anxiety Depression (HAD) scale (anxiety and depression), the Émotionalité Positive et Négative (EPN-31) (affectivity), the Affect Intensity Measure (AIM) (affect intensity), and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) (alexithymia). The 268 subjects were divided into: 69 subjects dependent (D) representing 25.7% of the sample, and 199 non-dependent (ND) subjects, representing 74.3%. It consisted of 224 women and 44 men, mean age was 22.23 years (standard deviation [S.D.]: 5.45, range: 18–56 years). There was no significant difference in gender (P >0.05) between groups or in age (P <0.05). The scores of anxiety and depression were significantly different between groups. We therefore conducted analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) including the total score of anxiety-depression as a covariate and as dependent variables, scores of emotions, emotional intensity and alexithymia with SPSS 11.5®. Results: The results show that dependent subjects have scores more important to the HAD than non-dependents, depression has been well regarded as a confounding factor. After controlling for this variable, they are more emotionally responsive, more sensitive to the emotional intensity, and alexithymia more than non-dependent. Activation and the emotional intensity appear to be dispositional variables may play a central role in emotional processing in the dependent subjects, associated with alexithymia. They could be located upstream of the processing of emotion, they would account for the gross apprehension felt by the subject, leading secondarily to the representation of emotion. The proportion of alexithymic subjects is 44.9% in this group of subjects, while only 13.6% among non-dependent subjects. They have greater difficulty in identifying emotions. This supports the idea of the existence of an emotional deficit in individuals addicted to psychoactive substances. This proportion is also larger than that found in general population. Conclusions: The alexithymia seems to be a central variable emotional functioning dependent subjects, regardless of its relationship with depression, it could match the emotional processing mode preferred by the subjects dependent. Personality in this study seemed to reflect a vulnerability factor, which alexithymia represents a secondary dimension, even defensive. This could account for a mode of emotional regulation. The limitations of the study and possible openings will be discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Jahrhunderts erklärt, da diese Umkehrung wahrscheinlich auf die Verlängerung der Schulzeit der Männer zurückzuführen ist.; Why is that in almost all known societies, men are on average older than their female intimate partner ? And how – and why – is it that the average age gap between spouses or intimate partners varies by degree of socio-economic development (over time as well as among societies) and, among couples, by age at which the two people became a couple, as well as man’s social position ? The international empirical literature on the question is reviewed, and the explanatory model indicating that individuals may well have « good reasons » for forming couples in which the man is older than the woman is examined. An empirical test of this model bearing on couples formed in France between 1978 and 1998 suggests that the model’s explanatory power is good, though in itself it does not explain the reversed social gradient of the age gap that occurred in the second half of the twentieth century, a phenomenon probably due to the prolonging of men’s education.; ¿ Por qué razón en casi todas las sociedades humanas conocidas, en promedio son los hombres quienes tienen mayor edad que sus cónyuges ?

08043; International audience; This paper seeks to advance our understanding of the drop-out behavior of students in higher education. Our results are based on longitudinal data for 7000 students who embarked on short and long programs from one university in Spain and who were observed over an eight-year period ending in 2004. The statistical analysis is carried out in a competing-risks framework. We find that academic preparedness is one of the major influences on student completion. Additionally, older students and students who delay entry into higher education are more likely to drop out before graduating. Our analysis provides guidance about the role that financial support plays in reducing drop-out rates; we also find that family characteristics are significant factors in explaining student drop out in long programs.

This study examines the effect of month of birth and its interactions with sex, age and year of performance for performance in flat races, jumping races (steeple-chases and hurdle races), trotting races, and equestrian competitions (jumping, eventing, dressage). The level of per- formance was evaluated by considering the logarithm of annual earnings and the logarithm of annual earnings per start in each discipline. Significant interactions were found between age and sex in all racing disciplines and in jumping. In some cases, a significant interaction also appeared between month of birth and sex. This was ignored in our previous study. Taking this fac- tor into account, however, does not change the conclusions of this article very much, although it allows a greater precision of the estimates. For example, the decrease of the effect of month of birth with increasing age is only significant for racing disciplines. This finding supports the idea that the effect of month of birth in racing horses results mainly from real age differences between horses from the same 'administrative' age class. Any lingering effect in horses older than 4 years seems to be stable and of smaller magnitude. For these adult horses the effect of age differences in month is expected to tend to zero and performance differences according to the month of birth remaining at this stage could therefore result from a seasonal effect, stable during the life of the animal. This study is concerned with the recognition of the human facial expressions of emotions proposed by Ekman and Friesen (1978a). The first objective is to examine the developmental pattern of the recognition of some of these expressions, and the second one is to verify whether the recognition is affected by the accentuation of the expression. Ninety children, between the ages of 5 and 10 years, and 30 young adults participated in the study. There were asked to choose between several words (happiness, anger, surprise and disgust) the one which best described the emotion portrayed by the facial expression. The results indicate that the recognition accuracy increases with age for the expressions of surprise and disgust. Two kinds of errors were more common than others for the children : the interpretation of disgust expressions as anger expressions, and the interpretation of surprise expressions as disgust expressions. Finally, the results generally do not support the prediction concerning the accentuation of facial expression., Cette étude s'intéresse à la reconnaissance des expressions faciales émotionnelles du répertoire proposé par Ekman et Friesen (1978a). The relationship between lens weights and age was determined using 322 farm minks of known age. Twenty-seven of these animals were used in the histological study of the mandibular bone, the femoral diaphysis, the cementum and dentine of M1 and the canine tooth. The weight of the lenses represents a good age indicator until 1.5 years. In older animals counting the resting or adhesive line (L.A.C., ligne d'arrêt de croissance) of the acellular cementum in the region of the M1 constitutes the best criterion for determining the individual age. The period of L.A.C. deposition is indicated more accurately.

P. Etienne — Time and the individual among the Baule. Time division among the Baule is not homochronical, and time itself does not appear as a lineal continuum. There follows a contradiction between the way a person's age is reckoned and the daily practices based on age différences, as evidenced, for instance, in kinship terminology. There are no real age-sets, despite the fact that there are Baule words for 'age-mates'., Étienne Pierre.
