This article examines how South Korean television treats the body in old age, looking at the issue of aging and the portrayal of disease in Dazzling. Kim Hyeja, the country's most beloved actress, who is almost 80 years old, plays the main character who gets lost in time. Her presence gives authenticity and depth to the series, and at the same time renews the collective memory of the Korean audience, and attracts audiences of all ages. The ageing star is involved in the creation of new roles and new fictions. With this in mind, Dazzling, who questions the place of the elderly in today's society, opens up other possibilities for senior actors.

Nombre d’extraits inédits traduits illustrent l’ensemble. This book scrutinizes the body as represented in literature of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in and around East Asia: China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia. The scope of the volume is thematic: saturated bodies, repressed bodies, reappropriated bodies, trans-formed bodies. The methodology combines as many disciplines as possible: narratology, anthropology, psychoanalysis, cultural history of the body, etc. History’s vicissitudes of history in the area concerned do not erase old conceptions of the body, as well as related discourses and legends, but the shock of modernization splits the body between an anatomized one, in search of identity mostly repressed by the nation, and a virtual one, generated by the cyberspace. Literature most often accounts for the phenomenon as if the autonomy of the body, still at stake, conditioned the so-called autonomy of writing. Two tendencies also appear in writing: a classical one, still restoring the body's deficiencies and excesses ; an experimental one, which manages to renew the link of the body with an alienating world, even if that implies breaking the language. An experience that is quite similar, all in all, to that of the West. A number of unpublished and translated extracts illustrate the whole.

The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected medical treatment protocols throughout the world. While the pandemic does not affect hand surgeons at first glance, they have a role to play. The purpose of this study was to describe the different measures that have been put in place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic by hand surgeons throughout the world. The survey comprised 47 surgeons working in 34 countries who responded to an online questionnaire. We found that the protocols varied in terms of visitors, health professionals in the operating room, patient waiting areas, wards and emergency rooms. Based on these preliminary findings, an international consensus on hand surgery practices for the current viral pandemic, and future ones, needs to be built rapidly.

The Argus II retinal prosthesis (Second Sight Medical Products, Sylmar, CA, USA) is an electronic epiretinal implant designed for use in patients with end-stage retinitis pigmentosa, as well as for other outer retinal degenerative conditions, such as choroideremia, Leber’s congenital amaurosis, Bardet-Biedl syndrome, Usher syndrome and rod–cone disease.1 This device was tested in a clinical trial of 30 subjects in the USA and in Europe to measure the rate of serious adverse events (SAEs) and to assess its effects on functional vision and visual acuity.2–4 Subjects performed better on visual tasks with the device turned on and retained these improvements at 5 years postsurgery.4 Additionally, an acceptable safety profile enabled approval of the device for consumer use by the European regulatory authorities in 2011 (Conformite Europeenne (CE) mark) and by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2013 (FDA approval). The implant is composed of an extraocular component, namely, an electronics case and implant coil, as well as an intraocular component involving a 60-electrode array that is tacked over the macula (figure 1). The extraocular and intraocular components are connected by a trans-scleral silicone-coated polyamide electrode cable, and the implantation procedure involves a 5.2 mm pars plana sclerotomy incision to insert the electrode array and the electrode cable into the eye. The sclerotomy is then sutured around the cable and covered by an allograft or autograft material.5 Figure 1 The Argus II retinal prosthesis. Labelled image of the Argus II implant (adapted from Humayun et al 2). As with any system having both intraocular and extraocular components, the trans-scleral electrode cable that traverses the sclerotomy permanently is a high-risk feature of the device, as leakage through the pars plana incision can result in chronic hypotony. The percentages of clinical trial subjects who experienced hypotony were 10.0% at …

Previous studies showed that the incorporation of methyl groups in silicon thin films obtained by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) improves their stability as negative electrodes in Li-ion batteries. In this thesis, several approaches have been used to understand phenomena occurring in the so-called "methylated amorphous silicon" during realistic cycling condition. We have shown that infrared spectroscopy operando in attenuated total reflection geometry (ATR-FTIR) provides quantitative information on the phenomena involved during the lithiation and the delithiation of the active material. The gradual increase of the absorbance during the first lithiation makes it possible to follow the formation of a lithium-rich phase LizSi which gradually invades the material. We have shown that the concentration z of lithium in this phase depends on the content of methyl groups. This behavior has been explained by two distinct effects: (1) the weakening of the material due to the methyl-induced lowering of its reticulation degree and cohesion. (2) the increase of the material porosity at high enough methyl content. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) measurements revealed that a porosity is present at the nanometer scale in the active material and increases with methyl content. Time-Of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy measurements performed at Chimie ParisTech have shown that the lithium invasion of the pristine active material from the lithium-rich phase is an utterly slow phenomenon (corresponding to a diffusion coefficient D ~10-19 cm2).We observed Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) evolution during first cycle depends on cycling rate and methyl content, using operando ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and electrochemical methods. The evolution of the material after interruption of the electrochemical lithiation at several states of charge has been monitored using operando ATR-FTIR spetroscopy and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Those measurements show that part of the lithium initially inserted in the layer returns to the electrolyte during relaxation and contributes to the growth of the SEI.; Des études antérieures ont montré que l'incorporation de groupements méthyles par dépôt assisté par plasma (PECVD) dans des couches minces de silicium améliore leur cyclabilité lors de leur utilisation comme électrodes négatives pour les batteries Li-ion.

The objective of the thesis is to study the temperature and doping effects on the etching characteristics of Si and polymers: reaction products, etch rates, activation energy, anisotropy and selectivity. The anisotropic etching of polymers is studied as a function of temperature by using gas mixtures able to provide lateral wall passivation. The experimental results reported are analyzed in view of the thermodynamical study of the chemical systems considered.

High-Quality Products but Low Profîtability : Why Japanese Investors Are Increasingly Rejecting This Time-Honored Formula, by Richard C. Koo The recent crash of the Tokyo stock market and financial deregulation since the mid-1980s have increased competition among fund-managers. Higher competition is forcing many of them, who have been quiet and stable shareholders of Japanese corporations for decades, to demand higher profits and dividends for the first time. Since the problem of low profîtability is pervasive at ail levels of production from small subcontractors to large world-famous corporations, the need to increase profits by raising prices at each of these levels could reduce the competitiveness of Japanese products. Although Gille hardly remembered anything about her mother, she later wrote Le Mirador : mémoires rêvés, a "dreamed biography" of her, relying on surviving documents, the memories of friends and family, and her own imagination. In this fictional memoir written from her mother's point of view, Némirovsky's story is intertwined with glimpses of Gille's own childhood. Part biography, part autobiography and part fiction, Le Mirador is an attempt to come to terms with the pain and suffering associated with a mother's untimely disappearance, as well as with the void and lack of memory that it has created. Ultimately, this form of fictional memory practised by Gille proves to be the only narrative strategy that allows the survivor to express and deal with an unspeakable past that cannot be remembered, and yet is at the same time unforgettable. 26. Musical Poetics in ‘Four Quartets’: A Transcendence of the Individual Will

Visual arts ,N1-9211 - Abstract
It is true that a great piece of music expresses to us something that words cannot express, and which therefore we cannot explain in words; it is true that music in its own way enlarges our range of emotion. But the moment a poet sacrifices sense to sound he ceases to write poetry (Eliot, Brooker and Schuchard 2019: 16). T. S. Eliot.Underlying the ‘Four Quartets’, arguably one of Eliot’s masterpieces, is a desperate search and expression for the real essence of life: one that encompasses an inarticulate, universalised emotion to transcend the individual will. A metaphysical poem, ‘Four Quartets’ is a clear allusion to Eliot’s desire in achieving a universal will that stretches beyond life and the external reality to reach the realm of a timeless still-point. Aiming to write poetry that could ‘get beyond poetry’ – get beyond life – Eliot’s experimentation in threading music and poetry together elucidates the importance of musicality in poetry (Matthiessen 1947: 90). With its power to evoke a ‘world unconscious’ to reveal the absolute, music gives form and pushes poetry beyond the limitations posed by the semantics of words (Virkar-Yates 2017: 82). This article examines Eliot’s musical pattern of uniting sound and sense in ‘Four Quartets’ to argue that a musical experience of poetry could transcend time: in exposing both poetry and life ‘naked in their bare bones’, Eliot aspires towards a state of absolute harmony in surrendering the individual to the universal will (Matthiessen 1947: 90).

Corona pandemic restricted industrial activity of the country, influenced social activities of people, and changed students' school programs. PM10 and PM2.5 measured in National Air Quality Monitoring Systems were reduced from 36.1 μg/m3 to 34.5 μg/m3, and from 20.3 μg/m3 to 18.5 μg/m3, respectively. In particular, obvious decrease of indoor PM2.5 with high dependency on outdoor air quality was estimated. As a result of precise field tests in 179 classrooms of 53 schools, indoor PM2.5 showed a low average, 23 μg/m3, and PM10 also was lower 33 μg/m3 than before and after the pandemic (51 μg/m3 and 59 μg/m3 respectively). Due to a variety of class work, limited attendance, air purifier operation and frequent window opening, it was not easy to drive a consistent impact of the Corona pandemic at the indoor PM level. Consequently, the indoor and outdoor airborne fine dust concentrations became more similar than normal conditions, and indoor emission amount of PM10 in particular decreased.

Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
The Department of Environment (DOE) of Malaysia evaluates river water quality based on the water quality index (WQI), which is a single number function that considers six parameters for its determination, namely the ammonia nitrogen (AN), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and suspended solids (SS). The conventional WQI calculation is tedious and requires all parameter values in computing the final WQI. In this study, the extreme learning machine (ELM) and the radial basis function kernel Gaussian process regression (GPR), were enhanced with bootstrap aggregating (bagging) and adaptive boosting (AdaBoost) for the WQI prediction at the Klang River, Malaysia. The global performance indicator (GPI) was used to evaluate the models’ performance. By preparing different input combinations for the WQI prediction, the parameter importance was found in following order: DO > COD > SS > AN > BOD > pH, and all models demonstrated lower prediction accuracy with a lesser number of parameter inputs. The GPR revealed a consistent trend with higher WQI prediction accuracy than ELM. The Adaboost-ELM works better than the bagged-ELM for all input combinations, while the bagging algorithm improved the GPR prediction under certain scenarios. The bagged-GPR reported the highest GPI of 1.86 for WQI prediction using all six parameter inputs.

Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
Estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) is a challenging, yet important task as the ET value can be used to predict many other natural phenomena. In this work, the reference evapotranspiration (ET0) was estimated using the extreme learning machine (ELM) at two meteorological stations located in the northern region of the Straits of Malacca. Optimum designs of the ELM were first determined and it was found that the different number of hidden neurons and activation functions were favourable to various input combinations. In order to enhance the performance of the ELM, the bootstrap aggregating algorithm was integrated to resample the original dataset. However, the performance of bagged-ELM was found to be poorer than the base ELM. This could be attributed to the high stability of the base ELM model whereby the training size already overwhelmed the dimensionality of the problem itself. The bootstrap aggregation data fusion technique produced a “backfire” effect that degraded the accuracy and generalisability of the base ELM model.

Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
Climatic parameters fluctuate dynamically and their turbulences become more significant as the influence of the climate change increases. A robust model that is able to factor in the recent climate change for long-term climatic parameters forecasting is desired to strategically plan for future anthropogenic activities. In this study, two stochastic time series model, namely the seasonal auto-regressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model and the artificial neural network (ANN) model are used to predict monthly mean temperature (Tmean), relative humidity (RH), wind speed (u) and pan evaporation (Epan) up to 12 months ahead. This study is conducted using data collected from three meteorological stations in the northern region of the Peninsular Malaysia. The stochastic models forecasted the Tmean with the highest accuracy, followed by RH, u and Epan. Besides, despite the increasing time step (from 1 to 12 months), the accuracy of the models remain consistent. However, both of the models are susceptible to the occurrence of extreme climates. In general, the SARIMA model performs better than the ANN model, probably attributed to its ability to consider the seasonality of the climatic data rather than depending solely on black-box computation.

Engineering (General). Civil engineering (General) ,TA1-2040 - Abstract
High demand for plastic worldwide has resulted in increasing environmental pollution. To make the plastic manufacturing process more environmentally friendly, recycling of waste plastic must be considered. In view of this a social enterprise called Me.reka Makerspace aims to use waste plastic to produce recycled plastic products using injection molding. However, injection molding is a complex process. In the past Me.reka experienced numerous failures resulting in defective plastic products and cost wastage. To assist with Me.reka’s objective, this study aimed to recommend a process capable of producing good quality recycled plastic products that meet dimensional accuracy and surface roughness requirements. Literature review done on plastic waste separation techniques, plastic properties testing for injection molding, and ventilation systems. Manual plastic sorting was found to be the best for Me.reka, where it can separate all 7 types of plastics collected by Me.reka with the highest accuracy and efficiency and the lowest cost. The melt flow rate of specific plastic type can determine its compatibility for use in the injection molding machine. Furthermore this study found that the best ventilation system for Me.reka Makerspace’s plastic injection molding facility was the displacement ventilation. It is expected that with the installation of an efficient ventilation system, the hazardous gasses produced during the process will be efficiently expelled thus protecting the health of workers. With regards to injection molding, a mold design was made for a book cover mold by applying the applicable mold design principles. However, this mold was later sent for testing at another facility. A flowerpot mold that had arrived at Me.reka which required immediate testing was tested instead. Through testing, improvements were made to the mold and the molding process by finding out the optimum injection molding temperature for the waste plastic used and the mold sprue diameter required to produce a well formed molding.

General Works - Abstract
How do pictures make the world? In 1907 the Chinese fiction writer and social critic Lu Xun 魯迅 (1881-1936) essayed the thought that making the world depended on attunement towards beauty’s emotional vibrancy and on an imaginative frequency to scientific thought, both. This curatorial project asks after pictures made mostly during Lu Xun’s lifetime, in turn-of-the-century China, mostly by brush-and-ink painters, but also by embroiderers, photographers, cartoonists, taxidermists, map-makers, and others who worked self-consciously within the arts and sciences, popular or academic. Their pictures carry within them their own struggles with the rationalities of science, as well as emotions and imagination, to make the world. Still, as curators of each of the six thematic sections of the exhibition observe, the pictures also escape the hands of their makers; they are thrown back into the flow of time through the questions they pose of us now, questions that we hope will prompt us to see and sense nature and each other differently, and in doing so, to make our own world from a newly aware and nuanced perspective.

Silver nanoparticles (NP) was successfully immobilized on polydopamine (PDA) supported polyethersulfone (PES) membrane via a redox reaction. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was added into membrane dope solution as a pore-forming agent. Four pieces of membranes (M1, M2, M3 and M4) were fabricated with different active layer coatings to compare their morphological and performance properties. The differences between each sample were highlighted as follow: M1 (pristine PES), M2 (PES+PVP), M3 (PDA/PES+PVP) and M4 (Ag/PDA/PES+PVP). All membranes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and contact angle analysis. The membrane performance was examined using pure water permeability (PWP) test, antibacterial test and humic acid (HA) rejection test. Pristine M1 membrane showed that PWP of 27.16 LMH/bar and HA rejection of 84 %. In this study, it was found that the addition of PVP as a pore agent into the membrane M2 increased water flux but slightly deteriorated HA rejection. Coating of PDA on M3 and immobilizing silver NP on M4 membrane surface have improved HA rejection but compromised PWP. The results showed that membrane M4 carried excellent antibacterial property and highest HA rejection among all fabricated membranes.

Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
Desalination allows the use of non-conventional water sources such as seawater for the production of potable water. The performance of three pilot plants in Mallard Slough, namely RO1, RO2 and NF3 were investigated. Reverse Osmosis System Analysis (ROSA), a simulation software was adopted for verifying the performance of the existing pilot plants in treating seawater. By inserting the specific system configuration and selecting the membrane specification of the pilot plants, ROSA would help to generate the operating parameters such as feed pressure, flux, recovery ratio, permeate quality of the plants. These results were subsequently being used to compare with the experimental data of the pilot plants to determine their absolute deviations. It was found that all ROSA simulated feed pressures for RO1, RO2 and NF3 fell in the range of operational feed pressures of the existing pilot plants. Besides, the deviation of total dissolved solutes removal between the results simulated by the ROSA software and the results obtained from the experiments were noticeably insignificant. In terms of flux and recovery ratio, the simulated results and the experimental data showed a marginal discrepancy with deviations < 2% and < 8% for RO1 and NF3, respectively. In conclusion, the findings of this study confirmed the feasibility of adopting this ROSA software to verify the performance of a pilot plant with all operational parameters being ideally optimized.

Environmental sciences ,GE1-350 - Abstract
Drought is a damaging natural hazard due to the lack of precipitation from the expected amount for a period of time. Mitigations are required to reduced its impact. Due to the difficulty in determining the onset and offset of droughts, accurate drought forecasting approaches are required for drought risk management. Given the growing use of machine learning in the field, Wavelet-Boosting Support Vector Regression (W-BS-SVR) was proposed for drought forecasting at Langat River Basin, Malaysia. Monthly rainfall, mean temperature and evapotranspiration for years 1976 - 2015 were used to compute Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) in this study, producing SPEI-1, SPEI-3 and SPEI-6. The 1-month lead time SPEIs forecasting capability of W-BS-SVR model was compared with the Support Vector Regression (SVR) and Boosting-Support Vector Regression (BS-SVR) models using Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), coefficient of determination (R2) and Adjusted R2. The results demonstrated that W-BS-SVR provides higher accuracy for drought prediction in Langat River Basin.

This study investigates how operation strategies of micro gas turbine trigeneration system (MGTTGS) affect its economic performance. MGT-TGS was required to sustain power, heating and cooling load of 148 residential terrace houses located in Kuala Lumpur. Based on the load requirement, there were two sizes of MGTs adopted in the research scope, a 30kW and 60kW respectively. Four typical operation strategies; powermatch, heat-match, mix-match, and base-load were investigated. Life cycle cost analyses with Net Present Value as the indicator were carried out. It was found that MGT-TGS can only generate positive NPV within 25 years of life time under unsubsidized electricity price. In addition, only mix-match and power-match operation strategies offered positive NPV. Under the scheme of the latter operation strategies, the MGT achieved power generation efficiency ranging from 27% to 28% respectively due to higher partial load ratio. Furthermore, these operation strategies generated excess electricity that consequently increased the profit from electricity saving. Economically, there were less capital cost, operation and maintenances (O&M) cost and replacement cost on operating the system under the mixed match scheme and power match scheme. However Net Present Value analysis indicated that the mixed match strategies offer better economic performances than power match strategies and other operation strategies for the MGT-TGS.
