Combining key elements from the learning tools of reflection, feedback and debriefing into a single reflective event is a novel concept. This powerful combination amalgamates into a tool useful in experiential learning. Linking the three concepts in a way that combines self-reflection in a debriefing framework, powered by trusted peer feedback resulted in a new teaching tool. It was piloted within the clinical setting of the primary health care (PHC) clinics in the Saldanha Bay sub-district in South Africa among final (6th) year undergraduate medical students of the University of Cape Town. This sub-district is a peri-urban community and encompasses a district health care system with less resources in both human and infrastructure than in an urban area. Being intentional and analytical as to optimal use of every resource not only impacts the students but also alleviates the pressure on clinician supervisors of activities. Pairing students alleviates the pressure of the insufficient number of consultation rooms for solo consultations and the pressure on the single supervising clinician when the consultations are conducted simultaneously. Using this tool at the end of the session facilitates the reflection and experiential learning of both the students individually. Self-reports indicated this tool kept both students engaged throughout all consultations and facilitated peer learning Alternating between being the doctor and the observer and knowing what roles entailed, the students never felt victimised in the reflection and feedback on their performance. And individually they developed their self-reflection and providing feedback as life skills.

On a reconnu le rôle important que les Éditions Ipomée ont joué dans la renaissance de l’édition jeunesse en France à partir des années 1970. Mais leurs livres marquent aussi une étape notable dans le parcours de ce que l’on appelle dans le monde anglo-saxon la littérature « crossover ». Les livres pour tous les âges existent depuis des siècles mais ce n’est que vers la fin des années 1990 que l’on commence à parler du phénomène du « crossover ». Au début, on avait tendance à réserver le terme aux romans et à passer sous silence les albums et les livres illustrés, bien que ces genres soient plus susceptibles que tout autre à s’adresser à tous les publics. Déjà, dès les années 1970, les Éditions Ipomée, avec quelques autres maisons d’édition innovatrices, publiaient des albums qui remettaient en question les conventions et les codes traditionnels de la littérature de jeunesse et offraient aux lecteurs de véritables albums « crossover ». Cet article veut rendre hommage aux Éditions Ipomée et à tous leurs collaborateurs, autant de « funambules », qui ont su se balancer sur la corde raide tendue au-dessus du gouffre entre littérature jeunesse et littérature pour adultes. Introduction: William Osler started the first journal club more than a century ago. As in Osler’s, continuing professional development (CPD) is challenging to deliver in our day. This paper discusses the CPD outcomes of Reading of the Week (ROTW), an innovative online education resource aimed at Canadian psychiatrists and psychiatry residents. Methods: ROTW consists of a weekly email sent to these physicians through formal partnerships, including 13 residency training programs, and summarizes the latest literature in psychiatric care. An online survey using Moore’s continued medical education evaluation framework was conducted to determine the outcomes of ROTW and how to improve it. Results: One-third of ROTW subscribers (n = 332) responded to the survey. Respondents reported a very high rate of satisfaction (97%). The most significant findings: ROTW improved participants’ understanding of psychiatry (93%) and informed their practice (83%). Conclusions: ROTW is a program that addresses challenges related to remaining “up-to-date” amidst the vast amount of resources available. Survey data suggests that ROTW has a high satisfaction rate and achieves practice change, perhaps because it provides a boundless learning option for trainees and providers. Further research is needed better to understand the reasons for the success of this program.

« Le Roi-grenouille » constitue ce que la critique anglo-saxonne désigne sous le terme de « crossover », c’est-à-dire un texte adressé à la fois aux adultes et aux enfants. Si ce conte troublant, voire dérangeant, est souvent tronqué, expurgé ou réécrit avant de l’offrir aux enfants, un nombre croissant d’illustrateurs présente une version non aseptisée dans des livres destinés à un public mixte d’enfants et d’adultes. Maurice Sendak, qui n’a jamais cessé de mettre en question la frontière entre littérature adulte et littérature jeunesse, inclut « Le Roi Grenouille » dans son recueil de contes des Grimm publié en 1973. L’auteur de cet article examine les interprétations visuelles du « Roi-Grenouille » créées par des illustrateurs de divers pays qui, comme Sendak, croient que ce conte appartient à tous les âges. Hydrophobic soils can occur either naturally when particles are coated with plant-derived hydropho-bic organic compounds or if exposed to very high temperatures, or artificially if treated with contaminated water or chemicals in the laboratory. Hydrophobic soils can resist water infiltration, are associated with preferential flow and may lead to increased surface runoff and soil erosion. Traditional understanding of unsaturated hy-drophobic soils suggests that convex water menisci, and so positive water pressures, should form between soil particles, due to contact angles > 90◦. However, experimental results do not support this theory. The objective of this work was to study the changes in meniscus structures in hydrophobic sand specimens, as well as the overall response of the sand to wetting and drying cycles. A very uniform, fine silica sand was mixed with Dimethyldichlorosilane to induce water repellence. Successive images captured in an environmental scanning electron microscope are presented, to examine the response of the sand in two distinct drying and wetting cycles. Preliminary results show that the non-spherical nature of the sand particles prevent or hinder the formation of convex liquid bridges, despite the high contact angles. Rather, water droplets appear to expand only through droplet coalescence, which prevents structures from contracting on drying.

The status and image of minorities often depends not on their self-perceptions, but on the official stance taken by the state in which they live. While identity is commonly recognized as malleable and personal, the official status of minorities is couched in stiff scientific language claiming to be authoritative. But as polities change, these supposedly scientific categorizations of minorities also change. Based on academic reports and parliamentary decisions, in Hungary today the Catholic South Slavs known as Bunjevci are officially regarded as an obscure branch of the Croatian nation. This has not always been the case. Early records of the Bunjevci categorized them in a variety of ways, most commonly as Catholic Serbs, Dalmatians, and Illyrians. In the nineteenth century Bunjevac elites were able to project to the Hungarian public a mythological positive historical image of the Bunjevci, delineating them from the negative stereotypes of other South Slavs. This positive image, fixed in encyclopaedias and maintained until the Second World War, represented the Bunjevci as Catholic Serbs who (unlike Croats or Orthodox Serbs) were constantly faithful to the Hungarian state and eager to assimilate. In the 1920s and 1930s traditional Hungarian stereotypes of Bunjevci protected them from abuses suffered by other South Slavs. As political relations transformed, official views of the Bunjevci also changed. With the massive upheaval during and after the Second World War, there was a change in accounts of who the Bunjevci were. The transformation from communism and the break-up of Yugoslavia have also evoked demands for changes in identity from some Bunjevci, and brought new impositions of identity upon them.

Water repellent (or “hydrophobic” or “non-wetting”) soils have been studied by soil scientists for well over a century. These soils are typified by poor water infiltration, which leads to increased soil erosion and poor crop growth. However, the importance of water repellence on determining soil properties is now becoming recognised by geotechnical engineers. Water repellent soils may, for example, offer novel solutions for the design of cover systems overlying municipal or mine waste storage facilities. However, investigations into factors affecting their mechanical properties have only recently been initiated. This purpose of this paper is to introduce geotechnical engineers to the concept of water repellent soils and to discuss how their properties can be evaluated under an unsaturated soils framework. Scenarios in which water repellent properties might be relevant in geotechnical applications are presented and methods to quantify these properties in the laboratory and in the field examined.

Earthen construction is a loosely defined term covering both the materials and methods for creating structural components from mixtures of subsoil, often with the addition of chemical or mechanical stabilisers. There is evidence of Man creating earthen structures for thousands of years, and there are many world heritage sites containing earthen structures, some of which present issues in terms of conservation. In some parts of the world there is a growing market for new-build earthen structures and a key issue here is the lack of design codes. Since these materials are composed mainly of particulates and water it is natural to regard them as geotechnical in nature, where friction and the presence of water have a key influence on material properties, however until very recently this was not the case, with earthen construction materials regarded as weak concrete or masonry. In this paper we examine these opposing views and discuss the issues associated with regarding these materials as unsaturated soils. The paper is illustrated with outcomes from research at Durham University carried out over the past ten years.

Turf is not a material frequently associated with construction. However, as a cheap, easily available, and versatile material it was used in antiquity (and has been used in various contexts since) to form unit-based and mass walls, embankments, and ramparts. Some of the best-preserved evidence for historical turf use comes from the Roman period, when it was a mainstay of military construction, being widely used in forts (e.g. along the Rhine and in Britain) and large-scale linear earthworks, most notably thewalls of Hadrian (northern England) and Antoninus Pius (central Scotland). To our knowledge, turf has never been examined as a construction material; its interest has, until now, been restricted to the soil and agricultural sciences and sports engineering. This paper presents the first exploration of turf water retention properties, assessed to understand whether turf behaviour can be collated with that of more traditionalearthen materials, for example cob or rammed earth. Tensiometer and psychrometer methods were used to estimate the water retention curves of turf, representative of that used for construction, harvested from two sites near Crieff, Scotland. The obtained data were analysed in terms of unimodal type functions to understand qualities of the full range of the soil water retention curve for Scottish turf. This work supports a larger project examining how engineering materials principles can explain ancient construction practices. In so doing, we will be well positioned to reintroduce this low-carbon material to the modern construction market.

The 1952 CSIRO accelerated erosion test was the first to appraise the quality and potential longevity of earthen construction materials. The test measures the depth of erosion resulting from a spray of water delivered at a set pressure and distance from a nozzle of controlled geometry. The test has remained popular, due to its simplicity, and forms the basis of the design for durability in the current New Zealand earthen construction standards (and their derivatives). However, it is now recognised that the accelerated erosion test does not capture the full range of exposure conditions likely to affect an earthen structure during its lifetime. As such, academics and practitioners have suggested variations to the test, to reproduce erosion which is observed in the field. However, this makes it difficult to compare the results of one test to another, and so prevents any standardised material assessment. As earthen construction materials grow in interest in the unsaturated soils community, it is becoming necessary to understand and explore the limitations of these materials beyond their hydromechanical properties and to compare results between investigations fairly. This paper presents the concept of a ‘generic’ accelerated erosion test method and examines the effect of the spray pressure and spray distance on the erosive force delivered to the test specimen, to understand how these variables could be normalised. The generic method, when developed, will remove the strict restrictions of the original apparatus, making the test universally accessible.

A panel discussion on the challenges for the Next Generation SAR was held during the EO Summit 2017. Three main topics were discussed during this panel. The first was how to respond to the trend of using multi-frequency data in the context of the long history of C-Band SAR in Canada. The second challenge focus on the best way of developing land applications and if multiple small satellites offer better opportunity than a single large satellite. The last challenge looked at the impact of the small-satellite trend and their potential impact on Maritime Domain Awareness. A summary of the discussion held is presented here.
