Satınalma gücü paritesi, döviz kuru belirleme teorileri arasında en eski ve en tartışmalı yaklaşımlardan biridir. Bu çalışma, satınalma gücü paritesinin uzun dönemli geçerliliğini 36 OECD ülkesi için Fourier kantil birim kök testi ile incelenmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Analizler 1993:1-2018:8 aylık dönemleri kapsamaktadır. Fourier kantil birim kök testi sonuçları, 24 OECD ülkesi için satınalma gücü paritesinin geçerli olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Bu durum, söz konusu 24 OECD ülkesinde yer alan döviz kurlarının nispi fiyat değişikliklerine uyum sağladığını ve satınalma gücü paritesi teorisinin bu ülkeler için güvenilir bir döviz kuru belirleme aracı olarak kullanılabileceğini ifade etmektedir.

The sustainability of purchasing power parity (PPP) theory is examined within the quantile autoregression model for the monthly data of the euro and the US dollar-based real exchange rate (RER) in selected European economies (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Turkey). Period from January 2000 to December 2014 is covered. The application of quantile autoregression model is motivated by the necessity of identifying asymmetric behavior of the RER due to the shocks of different size and sign. The empirical results support to some extent the PPP theory for the euro- and US dollar-based RER in Romania, Serbia, and Turkey. The euro-based RER in Hungary and Poland is also identified to confirm the PPP theory. The dynamics of the RER in the Czech Republic cannot be associated with the PPP validity. The persistence of the euro-based RER is estimated to be more prominent after the depreciation shocks of smaller size.

Uluslararası ekonominin ilgi çeken konularından olan Satınalma Gücü Paritesi, farklı ülke ve ülke grupları için birçok araştırmacı tarafından analiz edilmiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, gelişen yedi ülkede (E7) Satınalma Gücü Paritesi’nin geçerliliğinin uygun ekonometrik yöntemler ile analiz edilmesidir. Bu amaçla öncelikle reel döviz kuru serilerinin doğrusal olup olmadığı Harvey ve Leybourne (2007) ve Harvey vd. (2008) doğrusallık testleri ile incelenmiştir. Doğrusal seriler için Satınalma Gücü Paritesi geçerliliği Lee ve Strazicich (2003) iki yapısal kırılmaya izin veren birim kök testi ile analiz edilmiştir. Doğrusal olmayan seriler için Satınalma Gücü Paritesi geçerliliği Sollis (2009) doğrusal olmayan birim kök testi ile analiz edilmiştir. Analiz sonucunda, doğrusal seriler için sadece Brezilya ve Hindistan’da sabitte ve trendde kırılmaya izin veren modelde Satınalma Gücü Paritesi geçerlidir. Doğrusal olmayan seriler için ise sadece Çin’de ortalamadan arındırılmış modelde Satınalma Gücü Paritesi geçerlidir. Elde edilen bulgular birçok durumda E7 ülkelerinde Satınalma Gücü Paritesinin geçerliliğinin kabul edilmediğini göstermektedir.

Bir değişim oranı olan Satın Alma Gücü Paritesi (SGP) ülkeler arasındaki fiyat farklılıklarını ortadan kaldırarak, söz konusu ülkelerin para birimlerinin satın alma gücünü eşitlemekte ve uluslararası gelişmişlik karşılaştırmalarında önemli bir ölçüt olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. SGP teorisi uzun dönemde reel döviz kurunun sabit olduğu varsayımına dayanmaktadır.Bu çalışmanın amacı, 1995-2012 döneminde G7 olarak tanımlanan ülkelerde SGP teorisinin geçerliliğinin incelenmesidir. Bu bağlamda, panel veri analizi kapsamında reel döviz kuru serisinin durağanlığı hem birinci nesil hem de ikinci nesil birim kök testleri ile sınanmıştır. Yapılan analiz sonucunda; birinci nesil panel birim kök testi ile reel döviz kurunda birim kökün olmadığı yönünde kanıtlar elde edilirken, ikinci nesil birim kök testleri ile serinin birim kök içerdiği diğer bir ifade ile G7 ülkelerinde SGP teorisinin geçerli olmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

Purchasing power parity (PPP) is a useful tool for international comparison of prices between countries, in order to analyze the degree of economic development. On this line, purchasing power parities are indicators that express the main macroeconomic aggregates, in a common currency for all the countries subject to international comparisons. This material analyzes the evolution of PPP in Romania for a time interval of 10 years (2004-2013). The purpose of research is to analyze the purchasing power at national level, in the context of integration in European Union (EU). The period before and after Romania’s integration in the EU, has an important role to establish the positioning of our country in terms of purchasing power, compared to the other EU countries. The main conclusion of the paper is that Romania is the country with one of the lowest purchasing power parities compared to other EU countries, along with Bulgaria, which joined the EU in the same year (2007). Given that PPP cannot establish a hierarchy of countries, the research takes into account other important indicators such as: Harmonised Indices of Consumer Prices, GDP and inflation rate.

The purpose of the paper is to evaluate the validity of purchasing power parity (PPP) for eight countries from the Emerging Europe: Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Serbia and Turkey. Monthly data for euro and U.S. dollar based real exchange rate time series are considered covering the period: January, 2000 - August, 2011. Given significant changes in these economies in this sample it seems plausible to assume that real exchange time series are characterized by more than one time structural break. In order to endogenously determine the number and type of breaks while testing for the presence of unit roots we applied the Lee-Strazicich approach. For two euro based real exchange rate time series (in Hungary and Turkey) the unit root hypothesis has been rejected. For the U.S. dollar based real exchange rate time series in Poland, Romania and Turkey the presence of unit root has been rejected. To assess the adjustment dynamics of those real exchange rates that were detected to be stationary with two breaks, the impulse response function is calculated and half-life is estimated. Our overall conclusion is that the persistence of real exchange rate in Emerging Europe is still substantially high. The lack of strong empirical support for PPP suggests that careful policy actions are needed in this region to prevent serious exchange rate misalignment.

Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) represents a fundamental concept in exchange rate modeling. The main idea is given by equality between prices in two different countries when expressing in the same currency.This paper aims to analyze the behavior of real exchange rate between EURO and Romanian new leu (RON) under PPP paradigm. We use the Augmented Dickey-Fuller and Phillips-Perron stationarity tests in order to check real exchange deviations from PPP. Also, we investigate the existence of a connection between long-term between nominal exchange rate and industrial producer price indices from Romania and euro area. The main conclusions of this research highlight that PPP doesn’t holds; real exchange rate stationarity tests doest not confirm the stationarity, thus between the aforementioned three variables it doesn’t exists any equilibrium relation.

We show that an American monetary shock wields an influence, though limited, over the Lebanese output in accordance with the literature advances. However, as we are waiting for a stronger transmission of U.S. short-term rates to Lebanese short-term rates, we notice that this transmission is weak in the first year. The result can be explained by the presence of pricing-to-market. After the end of the first year, we find the traditional result where the increase in the American interest rate is transmitted integrally to the Lebanese interest rate. We recognize this phenomenon as the dollarization effect.

Comparison of levels of development among countries is usually done by reducing values in national currencies with a common denominator, using the official exchange rate. Because of its unreality, the values calculated in this way do not illustrate real relations between compared countries. That brings about the launching of the UN International Comparison Project (latter Programme) with two fold aims: developing a method for international comparison of real domestic product which could be applied to a number of very heterogeneous countries, and the comparison of growing number of very different countries. Until now six phases of comparisons are finished. Taking into consideration problems that appeared in the realization of the VI ICP phase as well as quality improvement proposals, a decision has been made to launch a new, global round for 2003-2006. Comparison will cover 150 countries (the widest coverage ever). This will give global character to the comparison, which was the end cause of the ICP.
