This paper presents a pedagogical experience in Science teaching from the curriculum component Botany which was developed at José Valmeristo School, located in the encampment called Quintino Lira, city of Santa Luzia in Pará (Brazilian state). We aimed to accomplish a pedagogical practice about plant science teaching and trace some discursive possibilities with Agroecology, as well as verify how this practice can collaborate with the teaching changes in the rural school. It is a participatory action research and an experience report about all pedagogical experiences with the students, teachers, and community residents. Throughout these practices, we built a Forest Calendar, a Cutting Production Manual, and the implementation of a small Agroforestry System (AS) in the camp. We discovered some local possibilities of a relationship between Agroecology and Botany teaching, including plant taxonomy, management forms, spacings and intercropping, reforestation, and the AS. When we relate Agroecology and Botany, we noticed that Science teaching transgresses the positivist vision and values traditional knowledge. It causes a reflection on pedagogical practice in the encampment context and MST, which should be closely related to the subject reality, in a dialogued way, so that it can contribute to the changes in their realities.

This article investigates the practices of colonial science through a study of one plant collector working for the Chinese Maritime Customs Service, an institution of Britain’s informal empire in China. Further, the article situates this collector and his work in the context of the boom in popular gardening in Britain at the time. Popular garden writing in the late 19th and early 20th century helped fold China’s temperate plants into the canon of “natural” British plants. I argue that garden writers used a “temperate imagination” to encourage readers to imagine the connections between their own gardens and the temperate realms of Britain’s empire. These authors, and the plants they described, helped bring empire home to amateur gardeners in Britain.

History has remembered Joseph Banks as the explorer-botanist of the first voyage of James Cook. Yet, shortly after his return, he got elected president of the Royal Society and, for over 40 years, he then played in Great Britain an eminent role in reorganizing natural sciences and advocating an "economic botany". He actively intervened in acclimatization and varietal selection of plants and animals in Great Britain as in the future English colonies. Thus he built an intellectual environment which will promote the emergence of Charles Darwin's thoughts.

Scientific and technological progress has enabled humanity to create an unprecedented level of comfort, underpinned by the global exploitation of virtually all planetary resources, including plants. Humanity has paid an exorbitant price for its prosperity – it has destroyed the resilience of natural ecosystems and, consequently, the conditions for the survival of humankind. We live in an era of global ecological crisis; without finding the right way out, we risk losing the ability to inhabit planet Earth. The technocratic development of civilization is killing nature and killing humanity itself. Industrial botany aims to preserve habitats and the biosphere. Key problems facing industrial botany include studying the processes of revegetation on mine dumps and developing nature-like technologies for accelerated plant restoration on mine dumps; studying the dynamics and status of invasive species populations under anthropogenic and technogenic impacts on vegetation; conserving floristic diversity in situ and ex situ in many industrial regions; and developing a system of specially protected areas.

This study examines the views of student biology teachers regarding field-based plant exploration exercises. It is believed that the incorporation of outdoor education into biology education enhances students’ knowledge of variety of plant species and strengthens their ecological consciousness. Over the course of an 11-week study, pre-service teachers conducted a botanical education outdoors. The research was carried out with 21 student biology teachers enrolled in a biology teaching program at a public university in Ankara. The data, gathered through semi-structured interviews, were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicated that student biology teachers considered these activities valuable for improving memory retention and learning through hands-on experience. However, factors such as difficult landscape settings and unfavorable weather were identified as obstacles to the implementation of such exercises. All pre-service teachers expressed that they would consider implementing outdoor education in their future teaching practices. These findings suggest that field-based plant exploration exercises can contribute to biology education.

The authors have developed an innovative botanical course that integrates genetic ideas into the botany curriculum. The process of choosing regional relics was conducted with the aim of illustrating the notions of full and partial dominion. This paper presents a novel phenetic approach for examining population genetic trends via the analysis of discrete alternative characteristics. In order to achieve this purpose, it is recommended to choose plant specimens from the local area that have significant morphological variety. This will allow students to actively participate in the collecting and study process during trips. The educational institution’s curriculum integrates research components and cultivates the growth of mathematical statistical skills for the purpose of conducting quantitative analysis of results. The exploitation of currently available regional objects demonstrates the concept of the law of homologous series in genetic diversity and mutagenesis in plants. One of the recommended papers provides a detailed and concentrated overview of the developmental cycles seen in the primary plant categories. The investigation of hybridization in plants is often undertaken via the examination of this phenomena over a diverse range of plant species, including both widely dispersed wild plants and cultivated varieties. These botanical specimens have the capacity to engage in crossbreeding, leading to the emergence of hybrids that may occur either naturally or by deliberate human intervention.

In this paper, we present and discuss experiences of the execution of the project “Exchange of Knowledge on Peasant Botany”, carried out during 2014 at the Assentamento Filhos de Sepé (Viamão, RS) with the group “Mulheres da Terra” and the Technological Incubator of Popular Cooperatives. An important characteristic of the Group is the role of women. Maintainers of knowledge and ancestral practices. They become active in all spheres of agriculture production of the settlement. Throughout 12 meetings, several themes related with agroecological practices with peasant life were addressed using different approaches: theoretical, practical and reflexive. Based on educational assumptions that value popular knowledge, as well as the horizontality of teaching/learning processes, the meetings contributed to the recognition and strengthening of the group’s identity of resistance against the current globalized agriculture. Likewise, the progress was made in the construction of autonomy in the face of techniques and knowledge applied to agroecological production.

Based on the classification processes, from 1939 to 2012, of the National Register for Trees of Public Interest, from the Institute of Nature Conservation and Forests, it was verified that of the 278 municipalities, corresponding to the five Regions of Tourism of Continental Portugal, 130 municipalities do not have classification processes. Considering that is an environmental but also a social gap, the authors understand it is necessary to contribute to the social understanding of monumental trees through the promotion of scientific culture in botany, as an important means to emphasize its value, as an endogenous differentiation element of each region.

Abstract The activities and archives of the Société royale de Botanique de Belgique are a rich source of information about the early decades of conservation in Belgium. In the second half of the nineteenth century botanists witnessed important changes in the landscape that also affected botanical diversity. As plant hunters they could have a real impact on the populations of rare plant species. In the final years of the nineteenth century a new generation of botanists added proposals for practical nature conservation in the form of nature reserves to the lamentations about the loss of beauty and biodiversity. The focus of their attention was on “wild” nature and habitats that so far had escaped from human disturbance. With Pour la Protection de la Nature en Belgique (1912), Jean Massart gave conservation in Belgium a program to work with, but in the next decades achievements were minimal. And yet, during the years that preceded Pour la Protection… little seemed to augur these hard times ahead for Belgian conservation.

After a general survey of botanical exploration in Amazonia in the past and a summary of the present situation, an account is given of the work carried out in the field and the herbarium is search of plant species of potential therapeutic interest. The potential resources of these vast forests are far from being completely explored and still contain a number of unstudied species. Despite the low probability of major discoveries in this field, a promising approach involves the rational collection of data on traditional medicine, the precise identification of species utilized, and the scientific evaluation of their true properties. As an example, a short list of plants commonly utilized for folk medicine in Amazonia and north-eastern Brazil illustrates the importance of phytotherapy for peoples often deprived of other therapeutic means.

In the novel Icefields by Canadian novelist Thomas Wharton, plants are more thanincidental elements. Vegetation appears as a living form of writing in nature that enablesmen and women to understand life and their relationship to the world. It can also beseen as the Grail that the alpinist sets out to find and that reveals the need to leaveplants in place and not destroy the environment for motives of profit. This paper aimsto show that the imagination may convey an ecological message and that ecologicalconsciousness may lead to metaphysical awareness.

A new pteridophyte for the Algerian flora: Isoëtes delilei (Isoëtaceae). — In the present work we report a new pteridophyte for Algeria: Isoëtes delilei, a species presents in France, Spain and Portugal, and recently discovered in Morocco. This species is on the world and national red lists in the countries where it is reported. With the only one station here reported, it is certainly a critically endangered species in Algeria, needing urgent protection measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

El presente trabajo analiza cómo algunas especies botánicas del Nuevo mundo, no tan difundidas como el tomate, el tabaco, etc., formaron parte del conocimiento botánico europeo, haciendo especial referencia a la de obra de Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605). Su herbario, sus colecciones iconográficas y manuscritos que contienen listas de semillas, maderas y otros materiales, se conservan en su Museo y algunas de las especies crecen en el Jardín Botánico de Bolonia.

The article discusses the use of gendered terms to describe botany in the writings of the ancient Greek scientist Theophrastus. The article describes Theophrastus' classification of plants according to male and female categories, the ways in which Theophrastus' cultural assumptions about gender into the discipline of botany, and the religious significance of botanic symbols using masculine and feminine descriptive categories. Other subjects under discussion include the categories of sex and gender, the relationship between Greek botany and Roman botany, and the anatomical characteristics that led a plant to be classified as male or female.
