The first classifications of the novel date back to the early 18th century. Then, the novel was still a new genre and was defined in relation to ancient Latin or Hellenistic models and to their narrative variations from the 17th century. By analyzing the first works that try to trace a history of the new genre and a taxonomy of the various types of novels, penned by authors such as Nicolas Lenglet Du Fresnoy, James Beattie and Clara Reeve, this paper argues that the works seen as peripheral in relation to a canonical, archetypal narration, which is typical of the novel, are in themselves illustrative of a wider phenomenon - the marginalization of those narratives which do not fit a current and implicit definition of a genre. Using Corin Braga's concept of "anarchetypal narrative", this paper discusses the works to be found at the peripheries of the novel in the 18th century and the explicit and implicit reasons for their theoretical dismissal. Conclusion. | (Abstract) The reaction to the climate crisis is dominated by recurring political failure and a reluctance to engage in ambitious climate action individually and publicly. Against this setting the judiciary has been called into action to address the climate crisis, adapting general principles, including fundamental rights, to the phenomenon of global warming. Persuasive arguments are needed to compel individuals and policymakers to act in a foresightful manner that can combat global warming. Judicial decisions can transmit such arguments within society departing from the individual case. A narrative analysis can reveal the persuasiveness of judicial reasoning ad enable the re-imagining and stretching of existing law for the purpose of climate action. This Insight encourages Courts to engage in the role of a narrator. An analysis of the decision of the German Constitutional Court through the "interpretative lens" of narratives exposes how such an interdisciplinary perspective can enable the identification of the broader conviction communicated by the Court. Narratives showcase the interdependent relation-ship between judicial reasoning and societal debate by operating on an emotional level. The decision of the German Constitutional Court relating to the compatibility of the German Climate Act with fundamental rights illustrates how judges can become narrators of climate change and how this new perspective may benefit the understanding of the role of the judiciary in addressing the climate crisis.

For the analysis of students' commentaries, I apply the observation categories that were first elaborated for the analysis of posts published in press sites. I focus on narrative commentaries in which web users organize phenomena and events discussed in public discourse and try to give them their individual interpretation. I consider this kind of interaction on press sites as contributing to the civic debates: I argue that they can be also integrated in observation categories used to describe and analyze exchanges between students discussing social issues in reference to foreign language media information. This paper argues that the corporate annual report is not only a document comprising retrospective accounts of financial position and performance, but also a text that points to the future by means of presenting dreams, aspirations and fantasies. However, these dreams are not to be seen as irrational deviations from the rationalistically oriented discourse of accounting. Quite to the contrary, the three corporate dreams identified in this study – the colonial dream, the evolutionary dream and the efficiency dream – are part of the ongoing self-narration of the company, in which it tries to display an allegiance to a set of appropriate aspirations that are considered legitimate in contemporary global capitalism. Drawing upon ideas from narrative theory, annual reports from 2005 to 2010 collected from NASDAQ OMX Stockholm have been analyzed with the purpose of understanding how corporate dreams are used in financial communication. These corporate dreams contribute, the paper argues, to the construction of legitimacy and trust.

Literature of Minuit, saturated with multiple intertextual references to the literary canon, explores the problem of filiation primarily on the level of novelistic aesthetics. And yet, apart from texts which in different ways refer to literary heritage and use its elements to create fictional discourse it includes works that take the form of filiative narrative. À la fin by Éric Laurrent is a case in point, as it is devoted to the author's grandmother and his family's response to her death. Drawing on theories of filiative narrative, this paper analyses the literary strategies whereby Laurrent presents family ties and their influence on the identity of an individual. In this paper we argue that social representations are a key mechanism through which knowledge about intimate partner violence is shared and understood. We draw on in-depth interviews with 11 men who had perpetrated violence against an intimate woman partner and analyse the social representations of masculinities, femininities and violence that emerge from men’s narratives about their lives and relationships. We analyse men’s social representations of violence primarily through the lens of respectability involving both masculine and feminine forms of respectability, which contribute to the maintenance of patriarchy. We show how the narrative of respectability is held together by representations of masculine heroism and feminine masochism and the findings cast light on how acts of violence are shaped by a range of intersections and structural oppressions. Social representations of gender and intimate partner violence also show how individual men’s narratives about violence are largely influenced by their peers, kin and wider community norms that make violence against women acceptable. Basándose en entrevistas en profundidad con 11 hombres que habían cometido actos de violencia contra su compañera íntima, se analizan las representaciones sociales de la masculinidad, la feminidad y la violencia que emergen de los relatos de hombres sobre sus vidas y relaciones. Se analizan las representaciones sociales de la violencia que realizan los hombres, principalmente a través de la lente de la respetabilidad, involucrando tanto formas de respetabilidad masculinas como femeninas, lo que contribuye al mantenimiento del patriarcado. Se muestra cómo la narración de la respetabilidad se integra por representaciones de heroísmo masculino y masoquismo femenino, y los hallazgos arrojan luz sobre cómo una serie de intersecciones y opresiones estructurales dan forma a actos violentos. Despite the several attempts to rework on his ideas, using non-mainstream approaches, George L. Shackle has remained an outsider in the economic discipline. Shackle, however, if we take seriously what he thought of economics, as a discipline concerned with a subject that is not self-contained but open-ended and impermanent, is not a man alone. Starting from an assessment of Shackle’s understanding of choice as originative and creative, the paper argues that Shackle should be rescued from the role of a nihilist where he is often relegated. In this perspective, a fundamental key to assessing the originality and anticipatory character of Shackle’s contribution can be found in the recent developments of several “friendly” disciplines such as the psychology of motivations and of self-rewarding actions, narrative as the “science” of the possible and the role of calendar time in choice theory. In fact, all these novel rethinkings can contribute to the understanding of Shackle’s main point, that human (and therefore economic) agents are active, creative enterprisers, who cut the deterministic thread by injecting the new in history to come, in making a difference in the future courses of action.

In recent years and throughout the European Union, “active ageing” has become a prominent conception of how to “age well”. In analyzing the governmentality of old age inherent to the “active ageing” paradigm, this paper tries to avoid the short-cut from program to praxis commonly being taken in governmentality studies. It reports on the findings of an empirical research project that asks for the specific images of “old age” and “retirement” becoming prominent in the context of last decade’s push for “activation” in German politics. The analysis combines the reconstruction of so-called “story lines” emerging in public discourse with the evaluation of qualitative interviews with “young” elderly people, conceptualizing older people’s narrations as being an integral part of the discourse itself. Moving from simple, ad-hoc illustrations of theoretical claims concerning a “neoliberal” government of old age to a systematic empirical reconstruction of what may be called the dispositif of “active ageing”, the paper claims to make an innovative contribution to an “empirical theory” of governmentality.

This article examines a few French constructions with two variants: one that can be analysed as an adverbial phrase or clause, the other as a kind of coordination that is not syntax but discourserelated. Three of these constructions concern, at least in their coordinative version, the expression of posteriority: pour + infinitive, avant de + infinitive, jusqu’à ce que. The fourth is illustrated by those of nonrestrictive relative clauses which Jespersen (1933) called continuative relative clauses. The expression of posteriority explains why these constructions are favored in narratives. Narratives are the most important means of fixing the meaning of events and of the social and cultural construction of reality. This is the main assertion of this text, together with a detailed explanation of what is to be understood by narratives and narrative research. A particular topic of the paper is what is meant when the concept of narrative is used in the social sciences, for not everyone seems to be talking about the same thing. The misuses of the term borrowed from the common language often pervade scientific speech when dealing with the concept of narratives. Narrative research has gained a lot of ground in the humanities in the past two decades; this paper shows the directions and patterns of this development and how the new branch – enabled by poststructuralist thought – can be put into the older frame of anthropological research. The truth that every truth is socially constructed is taken as granted by the new approach to narratives and this problematic is left behind in order to focus on the how of the construction of meaning. As already stated above, it is my hypothesis that narratives (not to be confused with narrative research in this respect) are one of the most important means of constructing and fixing meaning. Working with narratives can be confusing in a number of ways detailed in the paper, but also clarifying in the respect that it explores more and assumes less than the more traditional approaches of social sciences.

The logics that govern contemporary societies and economies produce increasing forms of marginalisation and new types of peripheral territories (Harvey 2003). The phenomena of polarisation of economic activities generate social changes of enormous magnitude that are reflected in complex and differentiated forms on local territories. Inner areas, as they have been identified within the innovative public policy dealing with development and territorial cohesion, are peripheral areas, distant from the offer of essential services of mobility, health and education, often characterised by strong depopulation, but at the same time they are custodians of an enormous environmental and cultural heritage (Partnership Agreement, 2013). Through the territorialist prism, inner areas will be read in order to describe the opportunity to define settlement models that can ensure the lasting sustainability of contemporary places, taking communities and their relationships with their environments as reference points. For the sustainable planning of inner areas, this paper will explore the present narratives to strengthen a systemic vision worthy of a possible future.

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) pre-service teacher’s identity is a process where language, as an object of study, is a tool in the mediation for scaffolding the identity of future teachers. Identity construction is not an isolated process. Instead, it is the result of a continuous and social process that embraces a variety of factors and the tension of diverse forces, struggles, and adjustments that the individual deals with. In the last two decades, an increasing number of qualitative studies focused on EFL teachers’ professional identity have appeared. To identify how professional identity is constructed, it must be understood as a product of discourse, practice, and relationships. Moreover, identity is developed through the stories (narratives) describing life encounters that have shaped who they are as teachers. Both discourse and narratives help teachers define and redefine themselves as professionals through the meaning they give to their lived experiences. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to address discourse and narratives as two research perspectives to investigate EFL pre-service teachers’ professional identity. First, the link between qualitative and identity studies is presented. Then, discourse analysis and narratives as methodological alternatives are introduced. Finally, implications and reflections for teacher education are discussed.

Tropical Australia is a multicultural mosaic fashioned by various waves of migration and ancient Indigenous cultures. Migration, cultural diversity and multiculturalism have been at the heart of nation building in Australia. Tropical Australia represents a unique blend of cultures, landscapes and traditions. Stories of migration, by the host society and by the immigrants, themselves are embedded with celebratory and fearful narratives. Immigrants to Tropical Australia have used their culture, arts, food and handcrafts as the initial point of building bridges with the society they found themselves transposed into. The early policies of multiculturalism were founded on recognition of cultural practice. This paper explores the role of creativity and multicultural arts in contemporary Tropical Australia from an enriching or a critical perspective. It is argued that the role of multicultural arts has been under-estimated in Australia generally. The building of a pluralistic and inclusive society requires genuine representation (and voice) of all groups, shared experiences and a narrative that supports a deeper understanding of diversity. Using examples from tropical Australia, the paper posits that multicultural arts and creativity are important elements of identity development across generations of immigrant families and communities, legacy transmission and cultural preservation, social cohesion, social inclusion and citizenship and civic participation.

This paper examines corporate narratives about two major international consulting firms—McKinsey & Company and the Boston Consulting Group—to see how these organizations are mythologized. The authors examine the construction of their mythical reputations based on how their organizational discourse shapes the projection of excellence in consulting. Most of the discursive materials compiled were put out by the two firms themselves and are taken from their French websites. The other materials examined comprise media discourse disseminated about the firms in the French public sphere.

The receptivity of the concepts and messages embedded in video games, as well as their use in education, have already been investigated in various social science disciplines. However, the video game medium still suffers from a lack of consideration by historians and struggles to establish itself as a real object of investigation, even though there are many titles dealing with historical themes. In this unguarded margin, stereotypes, historical fallacies and distorted narratives have potential space to proliferate. The paper aims to analyse the legacies and imaginaries of Sid Meier’s Civilization saga, considered one of the most famous history-themed strategy video games in the world.

In this paper I am analyzing the use of memories, inscribing images of the past and specific history interpretations present in Serbian and Croatian press published during the conflict in Croatia-period between 1991. and 1995.Although it is concerned with the media and the war in ex-Yugoslavia, the research presented here does not follow the known and many times formulated problem frame, which was conducted by all of these notions in order to demonstrate their perilous co-dependence-through the role and responsibility of the media in the latest Balkan wars. What I am searching for in this paper are conceptions about war (and wider topics, such as, conflict and its causes). I am interested in the ways war conceptualized itself through the process of transformation/shaping the information from the battlefields into narratives, stories which created war reality, by offering explanatory frame, protagonists, motives, causes and purposes. In that sense, I see the press as an ideal source for studying the production of daily narratives regarding the war, since it reported daily on it, offering various models for elucidating the war and its interpretation, reflecting public perceptions that dominated the society. The analyzed material are texts from Serbian and Croatian press that covered the war in the mentioned period of five years-starting from the first war skirmishes in Plitvice up to Croatian “Storm”. military operation, The essay is concerned with those texts that make images of the past topical and where collective memories appear as the shapers of the narratives, basis for understanding and self-understanding in the efforts of constructing a point of stability from which comprehending the reality would suggest/impose itself. From these texts we read different stories on war events which refer to history and pre-history in their explanations, bring suppressed emotions, old “truths” which were “proven” in the past and new ideas legitimized in it. They are displayed and analyzed with the idea of pointing to the correlation between the cultures of reminiscing, process of narration and conceptualizing the cognitive patterns for presenting (war) reality.

The role and meaning of narratives in psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy has begun to be explored over the past few years. Little, if any, of this material has been related to adolescent psychotherapy and it is the purpose of this paper to make sorne preliminary inquiries into how narratives might operate in this sphere. To explore this hypothesis, Peter Blos' ideas on adolescent acting out are related to a the ory of narrative developed by the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur. Blos' conceives of adolescent acting out as a part of attempts by adolescents to develop a coherant identity in what Blos refers to as a second individuation process. A link is proposed between adolescent acting out and Ricoeur s notion of narrative as the structure which undergirds the process of identity formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the upward social mobility of the Greek community in Egypt from the implementation of Gamal Abdel Nasser’s Nationalization Laws of 1961 up until the introduction of the infitah policies of Anwar Sadat in 1976. Both Greek and Egyptian historiographies ceased to explore the activities of the Greek community that remained in Egypt following the massive departure of Greeks in 1961-1962. Instead, they focus mainly on the Greek benefactors and the important social and economic capital they provided when the community was at its demographic peak. Additionally, they focus on Nasser’s policies, in particular the growth of Arab national-ism and the implementation of the Nationalization Laws. This focus overlooks the actual social mobility experienced by the lower and middle-class Greeks who remained in Egypt and evolved socially. What’s more this social mobility calls into question the construction of a homogeneous social and economic post-colonial Egyptian state.

This paper problematizes the notion of professional success in English language teaching as constructed in language policy in Colombia. This is done by examining one of the most underexplored social diversities in the field: rural schools. Stemming from a narrative study on how rural English language teachers configure their professional identities vis-à-vis the situated circumstances of their work settings and external pressures, this analysis shows that teachers’ sense of professional success is negotiated in creative, complex, and multiple—although not always consistent—ways, which represent alternative constructions of good teaching to those promulgated in policy. It is argued, then, that a reconfiguration of the belief systems of what teachers should know and do is necessary

The paper is a philosophical reflection from a survey of the academic production carried through in Brazil on the work of the German choreographer Pina Bausch. This survey was accomplished in digital platforms, comprising the period from 1988 to 2018, and included articles published in journals, book chapters, books, dissertations and theses. Thus, the present investigation intends to inquire in which way such approaches are close to Bausch's work, whether directly or indirectly. Concepts of image, parody and tale are used to reflect, with the input of Giorgio Agamben and Walter Benjamin's philosophy - in a collateral form -, on the paradoxes of the research at issue.

The paper aims to investigate the relationship between the artificial intelligence as narrated by science fiction movies in the late five decades and the socio-technical imaginary related to intelligent systems.The first sci-fi movies in analysis shed away from the idea of a symbiotic interaction between humans and AI as forecast during the 1960s by informatics and AI scientists. Afterwards, from the 1970s to the 1990s, AI systems played mainly the role of mirrors for the crisis of human identity: in these narratives the AI is presented as a risk, a possible enemy for human kind. Finally, during the last twenty years, a new frontier of AI seems to emerge in the imaginary. More recent stories forecast a future in which intelligent systems try to take their own place in the human social environment.All these perspectives emerge in conjunction with innovations and technical experimentations, bringing back up the relationship between “legein” and “teukein” as theorized by Cornelius Castoriadis.

This article proposes a narrative voice for European politics by the use of some interviews that have been made with political actors that work or have worked in the European institutions. The paper explores within the theoretical frame of Habermas discursive rationality the existence of a European being by means of utterance. A European narrative thus appears in the words pronounced by the actors having been interviewed. Indeed as far as we follow the theory of institutional facts, the discursive rationality and the concept of claim as a political action, this narrative becomes by itself the Europe in utterance.

This special issue of eTropic concerns living cities in the tropics and how they are conceived through the imagination. The collection of papers reminds us that urban environments are both created and creative spaces concerned with peopled and lived experiences and their interaction with material, cultural and natural environments. The issue is interested in processes of tropical space and place-making, with an emphasis on key areas that make up lived cities in the tropics: architecture, design, creative industries and economies, circular economy, neoliberalism, displacement, heritage, urban myths, narratives, cultural and natural landscapes, sustainable practices, and everyday life.

Suffering which results from environmental exposures often evokes a sense of moral outrage. In this paper, two complementary sources of grounding for that outrage are explored: Arthur Schopenhauer's close analysis of compassion, grounded in the metaphysical identity of all being, provides explanatory grounding for moral outrage as well as for the long-recognized importance of personal narratives in human rights work. Secondly, the broadly endorsed human rights tradition provides an additional confirmatory, more public, level of validation for moral outrage. Human rights norms confirm what the experience of compassion first intuited. Three practical implications for environmental activism follow: 1) the importance of personal narratives detailing the direct impacts that environmental assaults have caused; 2) the practical value of formal, detailed human rights impact assessments specified to a given situation; and 3) the value of community-led public inquiries, such as the 2006 People's Inquiry in New Zealand (Goven et al. 2007) and the 2011 Permanent People's Tribunal (2011) in India. El sufrimiento que resulta de la exposición ambiental a menudo evoca un sentimiento de indignación moral. En este trabajo se analizan dos fuentes complementarias de nociones para la indignación: un análisis detallado de Arthur Schopenhauer sobre la compasión, basada en la identidad metafísica de todo ser, que ofrece nociones explicativas para la indignación moral, así como para la reconocida importancia de las narrativas personales en el trabajo de los derechos humanos. En segundo lugar, la ampliamente respaldada tradición de los derechos humanos proporciona una confirmación adicional y más pública del nivel de validación de indignación moral. Las normas de derechos humanos confirman lo que la experiencia de la compasión intuyó primero. The revitalization of religion in postsocialism is followed by the revitalization of individual narratives about religious life in socialism. On the one hand, the lived experience is connected to the contemporary revitalization of religion and the public discourse promoted by the Serbian Orthodox church on the repression it suffered during socialism, and on the other hand, interlocutors tell of their positive experiences which stand in contrast to official stories. The research presented in this paper is directed toward the conceptualization of individual narratives which actualize the memories of the faithful of the life during socialism. Special attention has been paid to those aspects of the past which interlocutors consider relevant for interpreting their own relationship with religion, meanings attributed to memories and ways in which they are connected and interpreted i the context of the present.

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate how the consolidation of Anti-Masonic narrative in Brazil occurred from the episode known as "Religious Question". In this sense, huge volumes of texts were produced against Freemasonry around the world. Este trabalho procura explorar o recente interesse pela pesquisa qualitativa de natureza narrativa, discutindo as relações entre narrativa e formação e/ou compreensão da identidade. O objetivo principal deste trabalho é tentar estabelecer um diálogo entre o pensamento de pesquisadores que abordam as narrativas ou histórias de vida como constitutivas de nossas identidades e o pensamento de autores que abordam a questão identitária a partir de um ponto de vista pós-moderno. Por meio de um exemplo de "Terceiro Espaço", as ideias e propostas desses autores serão discutidas a fim de se alcançar uma compreensão maior sobre questões tão atuais quanto polêmicas, quais sejam narrativas, identidades e culturas, em suas definições mais amplas.This paper aims to consider the recent interest in a type of qualitative research known as narrative research, discussing the relationship between narrative and identity formation and/or understanding. The main objective is to try to establish a link between the ideas of researchers who deal with the issue of narratives or life stories as identity construction and the ideas of authors who approach the identity issue from a post-modern point of view. Through an example of "Third Space", the ideas and suggestions of these authors will be discussed in order to try to reach a deeper comprehension of such current as well as polemic issues as narratives, identities and cultures, in their broadest definitions.

In this paper I argue that narratives can be good instruments for assessing linguistic and communicative competence of children, as they are good indicators of syntacticsemantic complexity, they provide valuable information about discursive ability, particularly in construction of reference (nominal and temporal), topical continuity, and complex phrases. As this is the first type of text acquired by children, it should be approached as an important means for developing meta-textual awareness.

This paper tries to highlight the following question : how did lebanese political elites formulated and built the Palestinian refugee presence in post-civil war Lebanon ? In order to give some answers, the author studies the settlement or « implantation » question – al-tawtîn. In a first part, he shows social conditions for the developing of a narrative space on this question due to the signing of Taïf Agreements firstly and secondly because of the evolution of the political context in the Middle East after the Oslo Agreements. In a second part, the author examines lebanese political statements on the Palestinian question during the nineties and the beginning of the 2000s. Three types of interpretation of al-tawtîn are detailed showing how diverse and polysemic this notion seems to be. Regarding communalist statements of the main lebanese political actors and the syrian hegemony over Lebanon, he concludes that al-tawtîn works like a para-narrative.

In the present paper we reflect on the relationships between pragmatism and neopragmatism. First, we present some historical aspects of Classical American pragmatism: Charles S. Peirce, William James and John Dewey. In the following we present two interdependent topics: the controversial reading about pragmatist tradition by Richard Rorty and the conception of his neopragmatism. Finally we discuss the alternative interpretation of Richard Bernstein. He claims that the notion of conflict is an invigorating element for the pluralistic pragmatist tradition which conciliates the classical pragmatism with contemporary pragmatism under common purpose of try healing of philosophical wounds.

This paper analyses the media coverage of the Brazilian protests that happened in June 2013. We monitored 2,852 tweets from ten news organizations and newspapers that were covering the events on Twitter and, based on content analysis, we compared and identified messages focusing on violence aspects of the manifestations. We also compared this discourse to official data from 268 protests that occurred during the same timeframe, regarding deaths, injuries and arrests. Our results indicate that news coverage on Twitter diverged from official sources, amplifying the violence discourse by focusing tweets’ contents on this topic.

Literature offers the opportunity to encounter worlds beyond one’s own circumstances, environment, and situation. As an intercultural phenomenon, literary critique and analysis without borders can only be achieved by recognising cultural borders. Reading the literature of different cultures opens literary discourses to cross-cultural dialogue, but for too long, the lack of Indigenous literature within Australian literary discourses stymied the social potential of this intercultural phenomenon. Pressure from the global literary community has necessitated a vast shift of white consciousness to actively embrace narratives of different cultural dimensions, and novels that highlight cultural borders have become a key feature of Australian literature. Invisible literary borders have become apparent through exposure to the once silent voices that now emphasise messages of difference. Indigenous writers including Alexis Wright, Sally Morgan, Kim Scott, Jackie Huggins, Anita Heiss, Larissa Behrendt and Alice Nannup have opened reader consciousness to a broad scope of Indigenous perspectives. Within the arena of literary theories, the writer, reader and novels themselves have all had moments of glory, and while particular texts or authors have been immortalised, others have slipped into oblivion. Through the first person narrative of a non-Indigenous woman, this paper reveals how an intercultural literary experience revealed the restrictions of standard literary critique practices and inspired the creation of a relational discourse to engage with Indigenous voices as part of a methodological process. This intercultural literary process has the potential to inspire cultural awareness through acceptance and understanding of difference to overcome cultural unconsciousness. Such development has the capacity to destabilise invisible borders embedding lasting change in the consciousness of Australian readers and provide a foundational and fundamental step toward sustainable outcomes for Indigenous people.

The revitalization of religion in postsocialism is followed by the revitalization of individual narratives about religious life in socialism. On the one hand, the lived experience is connected to the contemporary revitalization of religion and the public discourse promoted by the Serbian Orthodox church on the repression it suffered during socialism, and on the other hand, interlocutors tell of their positive experiences which stand in contrast to official stories. The research presented in this paper is directed toward the conceptualization of individual narratives which actualize the memories of the faithful of the life during socialism. Special attention has been paid to those aspects of the past which interlocutors consider relevant for interpreting their own relationship with religion, meanings attributed to memories and ways in which they are connected and interpreted i the context of the present.

Recent interest in teacher identity in general and language teachers’ identity in particular has shown that although identity research can be contentious, its examination can cast light on the process of teacher development. In fact, the role of identity in teacher development has been promoted as a key analytical framework. In this study exploring narratives elicited from interview data, I examine how a novice teacher develops more confidence in her role(s) as a teacher by recounting stories based both on her imagined identity as a teacher but also on her practical experience in the classroom. Along with the stories shared by the teacher, she intuitively reflects on her professional identity through the use of metaphors and anecdotes. These under-researched aspects of narrative inquiry are presented in the paper as symbolic discursive proxies that the teacher uses to carve out a space of self-definition within the teacher community of practice.
