156. VIVRE L’HISTOIRE : RECIT BIOGRAPHIQUE ET FILIATION – LE CAS DE JEAN ROUAUD.

THIEL-JAŃCZUK, KATARZYNA
- Abstract
The present paper analyses a possibility of literary expression of historical past which is not known by a narrator from his own experience but only through his ancestors’ – direct participants of traumatic events – accounts. On the basis of Michel de Certeau’s and Paul Ricoeur’s theoretical reflections referring to the status of contemporary historical and fictional story and its narration and the intimate versus the official mode of biographical storytelling, the author of the text attributes these two modes to heroic, traditional type of biographical narration and the currently widespread filiative story (récit de filiation) respectively. The article discusses the process of confiding one’s memories of the past in a series of stories, also called a ‘family autobiography,’ by a French writer, Jean Rouaud. In this process, a particular role is played by ‘corporeal memory,’ which is a way of transmitting physical suffering from one generation to another. Literature, which allows for such a transmission, becomes thus an unofficial, ‘minor’ form of a historiographic discourse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The paper deals with the representation of History in the works of the contemporary French writer Philippe Claudel (*1962) – in his novels Gray Souls (Les âmes grises, 2003) and Brodeck (Le rapport de Brodeck, 2007), to be specific. The author uses, according to his own words, mentions of History to create parallels with the present. In Gray Souls he evokes the First World War, in Brodeck the Second World War. In both cases, narration is the matter of insignificant, marginal narrators, who are, however, touched by the events, deciding to tell their story in order to deal with history, bad memories and reproofs. Analyses show the way Claudel’s novels treat the question of memory, individual as well as collective, of the relation between History and individual destinies, of the role of testimony, memory and oblivion. In the south-west of Mauritania, the present provinces of Brakna and Trarza stem from the history of the pre-colonial emirates of the same names. This paper quotes the few but various data at our disposal concerning the landscape history and vegetation and climate evolution during the last centuries. We propose a diachronic approach of this area, to identify the part of the heritage in the current landscape and usefully enlighten environmental and development issues. We can thus identify the main features of the precolonial landscapes of this region as well as the historical roots of the production systems and put into perspective their recent evolutions. Beyond its historical interest, this knowledge can also be one of the grounds of the current environmental approaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is dedicated to the analysis of some important points of Patočka's Heretical Essays on the Philosophy of History in order to question his major thesis of the common origin of philosophy, politics and history shared by Hannah Arendt and based on Husserl's and Heidegger's phenomenological conception of the Greek beginning. It tries to show the complexity of Patočka's conception of Europe, which on one side can be understood as falling into Eurocentrism, but on the other side brings to light the dark face of modern European nihilism and planetary domination and tries to find a remedy for it by appealing to a philosophical conversion leading to the recognition of the diversity of human culture. BONE fractures , *BONE injuries , *FOREARM , *ARM , *ETIOLOGY of diseases - Abstract
Abstract: The so-called « Pouteau-Colles » fracture was never specifically described by Pouteau. This surgeon from Lyons wrote a paper published in his posthumous works in 1783. The author was allowed access to an original edition of the paper at the “Ancienne Ecole de Médecine Navale de Rochefort”. When reading this paper, it seems that Pouteau described a great variety of different kinds of forearm fractures. His original contribution was to define the mechanism of injury as occurring during a fall on the outstretched hand as opposed to direct injury. Pouteau presents a hypothetical muscular theory of fracture pattern etiology, but one that is useful in the understanding of the displacemnt of the bone fragments. He questions the principal role attributed to sprains and luxations at this time in the differential diagnosis of forearm injury. He described four clinical signs to diagnose, at a glance, which bone was injured, the site of the fracture, its displacements and mechanism of inury. Pouteau also presented a precise method of reduction and an original system of immobilisation, able to accomodate secondary displacements and avoid complications that were not fully recognised at that time, namely compartment syndrome and nosocomial infection. Pouteau simply concludes with a question concerning the future methods needed to reduce bony collapse and to fill the bone defects. In order to render special homage to this visionary surgeon, the author propose to attribute to the nosologic entity « fore-arm bone fractures » the qualificative of « Pouteau’s fractures », or to associate to every fracture of the fore-arm described by any other author the name of the Lyons surgeon! This paper aimed to present the regional differences in literacy between the former Yugoslav republics with special reference to internal discrepancies in Montenegro. Gender gaps took a central place in the analysis. First, we gave a brief historical overview of the various attitudes towards schooling in the Balkan, divided between the great empires. Religion, finance, government policy, and social norms contributed greatly to the results that persisted during the interwar period. After the Second World War, intensive literacy courses for adults and the expansion of school infrastructure created conditions for significant enhancement. Statistics are a basic source of data. They are methodologically compatible and could be beneficial for some further research in this field. Comparisons were made between republics, as well as within Montenegrin regions. The explanation of the gap between the male and female population is based on complex historical and socio-political circumstances that could be the subject of interdisciplinary research in history, geography, sociology, anthropology, economics, etc. These various factors had an intensive and long-term impact on literacy. However, with coexistence in Yugoslavia, the differences between the republics were reduced to such an extent that they almost disappeared at the beginning of the 21st century. The main reasons are the expansion of the school infrastructure, stricter compliance with mandatory school attendance, but also the state’s insistence on the importance of education. A similar situation is in Montenegro, where illiteracy persists only in closed and marginalized groups. There, poverty is a dominant factor in illiteracy.

For centuries, lots of Latin American women contributed to build their own culture creating outstanding literary, artistic and scientific works. There were others, as important and essential as those, who fought frantically for the independence from the Spanish domination. For centuries, these women appeared only as the male counterpart, no life or brain of their own. It was necessary to wait until the 20th century to see these women being vindicated. This paper tries to fill that incomprehensible gap and give some of them their right place in the Latin-American history. The analysis of historical and contemporary texts helps to throw some light to disperse the mist these women were immersed in until some man, at some moment, decided to consider them worth mentioning. During the last half of the 20th century, revisionist authors started to rewrite a history where forgotten women were already included as protagonists of a cultural development that lasts even today. Nevertheless, there is still a long way ahead towards complete acceptance and vindication. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, tell us about women discrimination at work and education in an unfortunately male-dominated society. They tell us about poverty and social exclusion. The same exclusion that suffered those women portrayed in the paper, and that will suffer lots of women in years to come. This paper has been written to remember them, to stop oblivion, to avoid their achievements from being buried by a limiting and authoritarian society, still in many aspects, cruel and male-centered.

This paper focuses on the Czech translations of Vladimir Mayakovsky’s poems by Milan Kundera which were published before Kundera’s emigration to France in various Czech regional journals and newspapers. Kundera’s translations are analysed and confronted with Czech renderings by Jiří Taufer, who later became the “court translator” of Mayakovsky in the Czechoslovakia. On the basis of critical assessment of both translation variants by means of lexical and stylistic analysis, it identifies the different attitudes of both translators, and – comparing both translation variants with the Russian original – it pays attention to the structural shifts that occurred during the translation process (mainly in case of Milan Kundera’s rendering). The paper also brings a list of all known and traceable Czech translations of Mayakovsky by Kundera, and it tries to present Milan Kundera as a literary translator, an area rather overlooked by research in context of Kundera’s novelistic work.

This paper surveys some of the challenges facing Serbia in reconstructing elements of its national identity following the break-up of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Unlike most of the other republics that comprised the federation, Serbia fought to maintain the Yugoslav federation, and so to that extent was the least nationalist of the republics at the beginning of the 1990s. However, as Yugoslavia disintegrated in that decade, Serbia was forced to reconstruct its identity in ways that reflected the unprecedented circumstances it was confronting. This paper explores elements of the ongoing process of Serbia’s identity-reconstruction since the 1990s, focussing on notions of hybridised national identity, the influence of historical tropes, and the tensions between cultural homogeneity and the subversive effects of globalisation on this identity. What emerges from this study is that contemporary Serbian national identity has consequently become a dynamic and evolving construct, and is continually being redefined as it responds to internal tensions and external pressures.

The aim of this paper is to recall the life of general Stilicho through propaganda, and to show how the image Stilicho struggled to create and preserve was manipulated by his political enemies after his death. Thanks to Claudianus' poetry and his own political craftiness Stilicho had created the image of the perfect soldier in charge, loyal to the Emperor, to whom he was in fact a “second father”. The paper mentions some of the various attestations of Stilicho pater of Onorius and, therefore, of the Empire. Nonetheless, right after Stilicho’s fall, Jerome, Rutilius and Orosius created a new image of the general through the reiteration of terms such as “traitor” and “semibarbarus”. The purpose was to erase the glorious profile created by Claudianus and to blame Stilicho as the cause of a political crisis of witch he was not responsible at all. He had been, in fact, the unique defender of a fragile equilibrium between Rome and Alaric. Nevertheless, the need to find a scapegoat of Rome’s decay, led to the accusation that Stilicho was even responsible of events that followed his own death. Ultimately, the paper aims to provide a number of Latin quotations concerning the history of positive and negative propaganda surrounding Stilicho's life and death.

This paper intends to delve into Roscoe Pound’s thought, enhancing his teleological conception of law as a key to understanding Pound’s historicism, pragmatism and functionalism. The Author will also deal with the Poundian contribution within a ‘situated’ perspective aimed at stressing some ‘genetic’ traits of American legal realism in relation to the specific history of the evolution of the common law in the US context. The text has the objective to discuss the theoretical-legal matrix of Pound’s theoretical reflection and its afference to legal science, highlighting his attitude to address the macro-theme of the constitutive principles of the law itself.

In his novel, Machines Like Me (2019), Ian McEwan offers an interesting example of “alternate history” while dealing with crucial ethical issues connected with the development of Artificial Intelligence. Instead of setting his story in the future, the author chooses to set it in the past, but he radically changes the contours of the latter. Hence, the England of the early 1980s is turned into a technologically advanced society, well ahead of the scientific progress of the early 21st century. Thus, the future casts its light on the past in what appears as a typically postmodernist mélange: besides mingling genres (from speculative fiction to uchronia), McEwan also performs an intriguing hybridization of fact and fiction. The paper intends to explore the rich historical dimension of the novel, which betrays the author’s interest in the reflection on history and on its narrativization – as well as its manipulation and/or contamination – within the literary text.

This paper argues that the Setswana language is characterised by spelling variants which are a consequence of multiple factors. It considers spelling variants found amongst individual words as well as those found in multi-word expressions (MWEs). It argues that spelling variation may be a result of historical fissions and amalgamations of the Batswana groups as well as borrowings from adjacent languages such as Afrikaans and English. The paper considers how three monolingual Setswana dictionaries of the past twenty years, Thanodi ya Setswana (Kgasa and Tsonope 1995), Thanodi ya Setswana (Mareme 2007) and Tlhalosi ya Medi ya Setswana (Otlogetswe 2012) have lemmatised spelling variants. The paper argues that spelling variants must be included in a general monolingual dictionary and that how such variants are handled must be informed by frequency information from corpus data. The paper concludes by proposing three strategies for addressing variation in MWEs where a difference between the two or more MWEs occurs because of a single word in the MWE or where variation is caused by the presence or absence of a word in a MWE. The third solution applies to cases where the variants differ in too many places such that it would be much more elegant to treat them as separate entries.

Abstract – This paper will analyze the ‘historical’ novel Gould’s Book of Fish (2001) by the Tasmanian writer Richard Flanagan with the aim of reflecting upon the power of the creative word as a means to forge reality, shape identities, mask or unmask truths, and also to prefigure a different, alternative world order based on commonly negotiated and thus shared values. The postmodernist revisiting of the traditional genre of the historical novel does not compromise the postcolonial commitment of the writer: Flanagan’s incursions into the Australian colonial past are informed by his concern for urgent social and political causes which has characterized his unswerving fight against all systems of inequality and exploitation. In his novel, the subversion of the linear causal relation of events which calls into question the truthfulness and objectivity of history, together with the foregrounded metanarrative reflection on the art of writing, contribute to the revisiting and re-discussing of the myth of progress and the cult of rationality at the very roots of Western civilization and of its imperialistic enterprise. Flanagan’s ‘anti-historical’ historical novel tackles urgent questions about modernity interrogating the founding narratives of the Australian national identity, in order to explore the uncontrollable and shifting areas of the contemporary ‘transnation’ in which the traditional categories shaping subjectivities are disrupted. As the paper will demonstrate, the writer digs into the past of his nation not simply in order to unravel its hidden histories but to detect the profound, inextricable interconnections with the present across different times and spaces. Feelings and experiences that exist above and beyond historical contingencies and cultural differences represent the writer’s privileged area of investigation as they trespass upon conventional and artificial boundaries revealing what it is that makes us all human.

- Abstract
This paper explains why the new generation of the submarine transmission systems by optical fibres has come into existence, ensuing from the telegraphic cables and coaxial cable systems. The author expounds how the main characteristics of this new system have been selected and describes its different elements such as its optical fibre, repeaters, branching units and the equipment of the terminal stations. The French program of study and development of the system is indicated and some thoughts are given to what the future in this particular field could be. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International audience; From Wisconsin Institutionalism to American Macroeconomics: Some Lessons from the Early History of Unemployment Insurance in the United StatesSocial policy has been a field of expression for debates and for analytical and political evolution during the New Deal. This has in fact been left out by historians of economic thought. This paper focuses on the querelle which has been going on during the genesis of unemployment insurance in the United-States. This one opposes Wisconsin’s Institutionalism leaded by J. R. Commons and a diffuse group composed of reformers and economists developing some “Keynesian elements” in American thought.

TV series are now part of various curricula in high schools and universities in most English-speaking countries as well as in France, where they are used to teach specific subjects, including medieval History. This subject matter apparently benefits from a growing number of audiovisual productions picturing, re-interpreting and continually recreating the Middle Ages: popular TV shows like The Last Kingdom (BBC Two, 2015-2022) or fantasy series like Kaamelott (M6, 2005-2009) and Game of Thrones (HBO, 2011-2019) can be used in introductory or even advanced classes about the European Middle Ages. However, what is it we really study and transmit when we pick selected clips from medievalist TV series to teach about the Middle Ages? How are these clips analysed to serve a historical and didactic purpose? It seems that using TV series in History classes implies for the student both to understand the historical period he or she is analysing, in order to understand the potential changes made in the audiovisual representation, and to acknowledge issues of production, broadcasting and reception of TV series, to understand why these changes were made in the first place. Teaching Medieval History with and through TV series appears to be a neo-medievalist tool, a paradigm which shifts the focus from historical knowledge in itself to the way this knowledge is interpreted and used. This paper is based on the quality study of questionnaires addressed to French high school and university History teachers, focusing on their use of medievalist TV series in their medieval History classes.

The creation and management of records, which are the basis of scholarly work in the social sciences and humanities, are mainly done with word processing software, which is ill-suited for this purpose. In this paper, I present Obsidian, a tool using the Markdown language, and the so-called Zettelkasten method, which I apply to research in medieval history. Firstly, I consider their insertion in the field of Personal Knowledge Management, as well as their functionalities, before showing their use in my work database. This approach makes navigation easier by creating links between records, but also allows for very precise and efficient global searches. Thanks to this organisation, it is possible to manage a large amount of documents and it facilitates the emergence of new ideas, but it obviously does not replace reflection. Like with any tool, one must define what one wants to do with it, make it one’s own, and use it for a specific purpose. Obsidian allows one to navigate through one’s own analyses in a powerful, rapid and easy manner. As for the Zettelkasten method, it can be used to structure one’s analysis, formalise it and build one’s thought.

This paper reviews the digital edition Der Sturm – Digitale Quellenedition zur Geschichte der internationalen Avantgarde, which aims to bring together all existing digital sources on the STURM company, to make them accessible and to link them with each other. Initiated by Herwarth Walden by founding the STURM magazine for contemporary art, the STURM company provided many different platforms (e.g., gallery, publishing, theatre) for the art scene in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century and had also a big impact on the international avant-garde. The digital edition currently offers facsimiles, transcriptions, and commentaries on a part of the letters, the encoding of the sources and texts is done in TEI-XML and can be downloaded or accessed via an API. Inventory lists exist for the other documents which link to the source of the digital image. All semantic and structural entities of STURM sources are permanently referenced using persistent identifiers.

198. Notaries and the law in Venice: development of a discipline

Republic of Venice ,notaries ,Legislation ,history ,History of Law ,KJ2-1040 - Abstract
The paper follows the development of the notary profession in Venice in the production of private deeds (instrumenta) and public acts (acta). In the Middle Ages, both activities were performed by the clergy. With the advent of the Commune, a Chancery was instituted to archive separately the acta, as well as the instrumenta. A lay Great Chancellor organised clerks who were members of the clergy, and they also wrote private deeds. As the requirements of the notarial activity became stricter, a policy of careful selection was implemented. The two fields of the notarial activity began to differentiate. In 1433, a papal bull forbade priests to work as clerks in secular institutions. It marked the beginning of a turnover in the Chancery staff, the new clerks being chosen among laymen. Close control was kept on Venetian citizenship as the main requisite to access Chancery posts. Similar criteria were applied to private notaries: after some successful tests, in 1514 a procedure for admission to the profession, and a College of Notaries, were finally instituted.

In this paper, we argue that the crisis of teaching can be understood as a crisis of labour that continues to impact academic librarians because it is a historical process grounded in larger socio-political shifts precipitated by capitalism. We demonstrate that the emergence and development of teaching—and specifically teaching information literacy (IL) as a kind of librarian curriculum—in academic libraries in North America corresponds to the emergence of neoliberalism. The shocks created by neoliberal fiscal austerity along with anxiety about de-professionalization and de-skilling provoked by cheaper and more widely available information technology created a mounting crisis of legitimacy in librarianship throughout the late 1970s and into the 1980s. Librarians ostensibly remedied this crisis through the positioning of IL as a central contribution of the profession to the academy and society. The COVID-19 pandemic and economic recessions have only intensified the proletarianization processes that have been ongoing since the 1970s. As teaching, learning, and assessment technologies proliferate in the academy, librarians cannot teach more efficiently to meet the needs of growing university populations. Instead, they must rethink the purpose and goals of librarian teaching in the context of the academy. The question of teaching will not be solved until material conditions of librarian labour in the academy are solved.

Bernard Mandeville is often cited as one of the most influential thinkers on the theories of spontaneous social order. According to Friedrich August Hayek, B. Mandeville, in his The fable of the Bees (1714), enables a completely transformed understanding of social order. Is the order we observe in society the product of human design or does it, conversely, come about spontaneously? Far from being the product of some kind of human intention, the order observed in society is the result of a self-regulating and self-perpetuating process.Mandeville’s approach aims to invalidate any form of social constructivism. Society is therefore seen as an “edifice without an architect” (Gilles Dostaler, Le libéralisme de Hayek). Mandeville, like the thinkers of the Scottish Enlightenment, considers social order to be the outcome of human action rather than human intention. However, neither Mandeville nor Hayek succeeds in eliminating human design in their approach of social order. This paper seeks to establish that human design is even at work in the theory of spontaneous social order.
