International audience; Drawing from fieldwork I conducted in Brussels with a group of drag kings in which I experience myself to perform a male character, and from my practice of dance and performance, I will focus my analysis on what I call “losing the self”. By “losing the self”, I mean a moment in which social actors, in the framework of a gendered and embodied transformational activity, experience to come out from the self and to welcome into one’s own body a desired self, and to becoming something/someone new. The analysis of this moment I experienced in the field, in which the transition from observer to participant status took place, and in which I experienced the transition from an assigned at birth masculinity to a king masculinity, allows me to highlight some central points for gender studies and performance studies, in particular, and for the social sciences, in general: How to think of transformational processes through a multidimensional perspective (i.e. verbal, tactile, visual, material) taking into account its public, reflexive, multimodal and indexical dimensions? Finally, how can we rethink the boundaries between observation and participation, art and life, and to think of science through the lens of experience and becoming?; À partir d’un terrain mené à Bruxelles avec un groupe de drag kings au sein duquel j’ai fait moimême l’expérience d’incarner un personnage masculin, et d’une série d’expériences menées dans le champ de la danse et de la performance, je me penche sur l’analyse de ce que j’appelle la « perte de soi ». Par « perte de soi », j’entends un moment dans lequel les sujets, dans le cadre d’une activité de transformation, corporelle et genrée, font l’expérience de sortir d’eux-mêmes pour accueillir dans leur propre corps un soi désiré et devenir quelque chose/quelqu’un d’autre.L’analyse de ce moment vécu sur le terrain, où s’est opérée la transition d’un statut d’observateur à celui de participant, et dans lequel je suis passé d’une masculinité assignée à la naissance à une masculinité king, me permettra de faire le point sur quelques questions centrales pour les étudesde genre et les performance studies, en particulier, et pour les sciences sociales, en général : comment penser les processus de transformation au prisme d’une vision multidimensionnelle (i.e. verbale, tactile, visuelle, matérielle) tenant compte à la fois de leur dimensions publique, réflexive, multimodale et indexicale ? Comment enfin, interroger les frontières entre observation et participation, art et vie, et penser la science au prisme de l’expérience et du devenir ?
