LOGIC ,MATHEMATICAL models - Abstract
This paper presents the results of a pertinent meditation of the author concerning the concept of „set" from the mathematical theory and its consequences in the logical theory of classes. After all, one of these consequences draws our attention: semantical antinomies. The starting point of these analyses originates in the famous work of Bertrand Russell and Alfred North Whitehead Principia Mathematica (1910-1913), authors who developed the well known paradox of „the class of the classes which do not include themselves as element" and proposed as solution the known „theory of types". The focus of our paper is the contribution of the Polish logician Stanislav Lesniewski (1886-1939) to the solutioning of the russellian problem of antinomies by distinguishing between mereology, ontology and protothetic. The objective of this paper is to describe the first behavioural models of cooled (based on HgCdTe photodetectors) infrared sensors which were designed at CEA-LETI/SLIR. In this way, the interest of such an approach in the evaluation and improvement of optronic systems will be shown. The paper first presents the modelling approach (architecture of the models, choice of parameters, tools for modelling and calibration,
… ). Then models are compared to measurements on real components in order to verify the efficiency of the modelling approach. To cite this article: P. Castelein, C. R. Physique 4 (2003). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]- Published

Many machine learning algorithms use entropy measures as a criterion of construction that they seek to optimize. Among the most applied measures, Shannon's entropy is certainly the most known. However, in the real world applications, the use of the entropy measure turns out to be totally inadequate both in theory and in practice. Indeed, many hypothesis are in fact implicitly assumed whereas they are unfounded, therefore unjustified. In this paper, we will try to identify those hypothesis and we will demonstrate that they are unsuitable in machine learning with real data. Then, we will introduce, intuitively, a set of new prosperities that should be required for measures that are supposed to lead to efficients algorithms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Although the same simple laws govern cancer outcome (cell division repeated again and again), each tumour has a different outcome before as well as after irradiation therapy. The linear-quadratic radiosensitivity model allows an assessment of tumor sensitivity to radiotherapy. This model presents some limitations in clinical practice because it does not take into account the interactions between tumour cells and non-tumoral bystander cells (such as endothelial cells, fibroblasts, immune cells…) that modulate radiosensitivity and tumor growth dynamics. These interactions can lead to non-linear and complex tumor growth which appears to be random but that is not since there is not so many tumors spontaneously regressing. In this paper we propose to develop a deterministic approach for tumour growth dynamics using chaos theory. Various characteristics of cancer dynamics and tumor radiosensitivity can be explained using mathematical models of competing cell species. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

PRINT advertising ,PRAGMATICS ,INFERENTIAL statistics ,COMMUNICATION ,MATHEMATICAL models ,FINANCIAL crises ,BANKING industry advertising - Abstract
The study analyses people's interpretation of selected French print advertisements using the tools of post-Gricean pragmatics, especially Sperber and Wilson's Relevance Theory. After explaining the functioning of the inferential model of communication and, within it, the role of implicature (according to the principle of relevance), the paper then turns to the results of a practical study comprising four selected French print advertisements from the banking field, published after the onset of the financial crisis. Following on the study, a number of the advertising interpretations which were arrived at via implicature are quoted and analysed with respect to their strength and the processing effort needed to construct them. Our analysis presents meaningful insights into contemporary French banking advertising communications by pointing out the shift towards implicit communication, via weak implicatures, and the endeavour to replace banking jargon by general concepts (confidence, optimism, future, team etc.) which are reaffirmed. FINITE element method , *DEGREES of freedom , *NUMERICAL grid generation (Numerical analysis) , *MATHEMATICAL models , *GEOMETRIC analysis - Abstract
When conducting a finite element analysis one way to reduce the total number of degrees of freedom is to use elements of reduced dimension such as beam and shell elements. Because of geometric complexities some models must be meshed using volume elements. If however some parts of these models fit the description of shells then a mixed-dimensional model containing shell and volume elements side by side can be used. This approach can significantly reduce the time needed to mesh and solve the system. Unfortunately, problems arise when trying to connect elements of different dimensions due to modeling problems, to incompatible degrees of freedom and to independently created meshes. This paper presents a solution to these problems based on the generation of a compatible mesh composed solely of basic elements and without the requirement of constraint equations. MANUFACTURING processes , *DISTRIBUTION (Probability theory) , *ESTIMATION theory , *ENGINEERING tolerances , *MATHEMATICAL models - Abstract
This paper proposes a new methodology to exploit the capability of manufacturing processes in the statistical calculation of the tolerance of localization of a set of features according to the standards ISO 1101 and ASME Y14.5. The number of features that form the pattern studied, the systematic and random errors in the manufacturing process will all be retained and included in the approach. An explicit mathematical model is developed to identify the statistical distribution functions for different types of localization tolerances. From these distributions, we present a methodology to estimate the values of tolerance that can meet a compliance threshold for a pre-established value, and vice versa. The article also presents a series of charts that are usable in an industrial context. Many examples are illustrated and a case study is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and later serious psychopathology have long been associated in the literature. Psychotic disorder following traumatic head injury is reported to occur in 0.7 to 9% of patients who sustain a head injury. This paper summarizes the recent literature about psychotic symptoms following TBI and try to articulate these psychotic disorders to a pathophysiological model of primary schizophrenia. Psychotic disorder due to a general medical condition (TBI) indicates that the hallucinations or delusions are the direct physical consequences of the medical condition. A contrario, schizophrenia-like psychosis is a secondary schizophreniform syndrom that must be differentiated from posttraumatic schizophrenia where the head trauma is an external factor furthering the onset of a primary psychosis. A dimensional approach could although take place for understanding pathophysiology. Head injury has been reported to increase the likelihood of the development of psychosis disorder due to TBI, schizophrenia-like psychosis and posttraumatic schizophrenia. While TBI is a major public health issue, schizophrenia following TBI is relatively rare and poorly studied. The onset of schizophrenia occurs most commonly from late adolescence to mid-adulthood, in an age group where head injury is more frequent. Even if early illness features of schizophrenia might increase exposure to TBI, posttraumatic schizophrenia could be the result of a gene-environment interaction. The pathophysiology research in psychotic disorders following TBI does not distinguish schizophrenia from other psychotic syndromes but have to consider a dimensional approach of these psychotic phenomena. Family history of schizophrenia and frontal or parietal lobe deficits was more common in patients with posttraumatic psychotic symptoms. Susceptibility to schizophrenia is believed to be due to multiple genetic and interacting factors and mild childhood head injury may play a role in the development and onset of schizophrenia in families with a strong genetic predisposition. The authors suggest hypotheses aimed at furthering the understanding of the physiologic mechanisms relating traumatic brain injuries to psychotic symptoms. Psychotic disorder following TBI, schizophrenia-like psychosis and posttraumatic schizophrenia are a potential interest to clinicians and neuroscientists, as it may provide clues to understanding primary psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder commonly attributed to the interaction of genetic vulnerability and environmental events which implies that environmental factors modulate the effects of the genotype. Schizophrenia related to TBI could also be the result of a gene-environment interaction. Schizophrenia genes may increase exposure to head trauma (through agitation or cognitive impairment), with head trauma further increasing the risk for schizophrenia. Further studies are needed to articulate the links between secondary psychotic symptoms and primary schizophrenia in a structure/function paradigm. The new imaging techniques of magnetic resonance imaging, position emission tomography and single-photon emission computed tomography could aid in this sense. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

SHAPE memory alloys , *COMPUTER algorithms , *SIMULATION methods & models , *MATHEMATICAL models , *FLUID dynamics - Abstract
In this paper, some improvements in the RL model are presented in order to solve transient dynamics problems. The initial model, based on the thermo mechanics behaviour of alloy coupled with the heat equation has been implemented in a unite-element code for low frequency dynamics in previous works. Using this non linear model for transient dynamics (structural response to impact excitation) leads to non-physical solutions or to non convergence of the time integration algorithm. These behaviours are clue t;o strong non- linearities of equations that govern the transformation kinetics between both phases (austenite/martensite). Adding a relaxation term in differential equations allows the algorithms to converge without disturbing the original system. This term can be associated to a physical effect which is the propagation velocity of the phase transformation, classically considered as instantaneous in static or quasi-static simulations. The results are shown using a 2D structure excited by an impact force. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This paper investigates the instability of a viscoelastic fluid in a saturated porous medium heated from below and subjected to an horizontal through-flow. The Oldroyd-B constitutive equation is used to describe the viscoelastic behavior of diluted polymeric solutions. In the absence of the horizontal flow, the onset of convection can be characterized either by stationary or oscillatory instabilities. A temporal stability analysis is carried out in order to study the combined influence of the viscoelastic properties of the fluid and the main flow on the linear characteristics of these two types of instabilities. It is shown that the presence of the through-flow has a destabilizing effect and that it favors the emergence of mobile transverse rolls (R.T.), among an infinity of three-dimensional unstable modes. The thresholds for the appearance of these R.T., as well as their wavelengths and frequencies, are determined as functions of the dimensionless parameters of the problem. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Turbulent flow between rotating disc and fixed disc, influence of edge effects with the fixed radius values. This paper illustrates the influence of the finite radius of two disks on the inlet phenomena. The configuration of the streamlines of the flow in the vicinity of a rotating disc is considered. Good results are obtained using the electrolytic deposit to visualize the parietal flow in the case of rotating solids. This experimental technique enabled to show different phenomena characterizing the flow types such as the edge effects and to validate the theoretical results concerning the velocity field obtained by a mathematical model based on a corrected shooting iterative method. The flow is of Batchelor type: two developed boundary layers on each disc, separated by a fluid core rotating with 0.3 w (w being the disc rotating velocity) were present. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an accelerated test method applicable to complex mechanical devices when no analytical relationship with respect to the stress level can be defined. If a numerical approach remains possible, the numerical model can be fitted to the accelerated test results. Thus, long term failures can be predicted from very short tests. This method is carried out in the case of fatigue, the evolution of the damage leading to the failure having to be modeled by a numerical finite-elements method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Some recent controversies have highlighted that a genetic or a neuropsychological determinism was the view that dominated the debate in the field of the etiopathological understanding of externalised disorders in the scientific community. Based on a review of the recent literature, I will show that other views are trying to integrate the diversity and the complexity of the factors that influence these behavioural manifestations. The model that better encompasses this complexity is a developmental model of probabilistic epigenetic. In this paper, I summarize several lines of studies that support this model. To this purpose, I will leave the categorical approach of the psychiatric nosography, to adopt a dimensional approach of the phenomenology that will help to follow and focus on specific pertinent dimensions such as clinical signs, temperamental and psychological characteristics, environmental and/or genetic factors in order to study their interactions and their possible developmental product. This model also permits a specific temporal focus on early interactions that many consider as crucial in terms of developmental cues. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

These tissues are organised in multi-layers, present anisotropic properties and nonlinear behaviour. The evaluation of the interface pressure by traditional rigid sensors leads to errors of measurement. The device FORSAFE performs the measurement of the pressure on the fetal head. It is aimed to limit the risks due to a bad positioning and a too important tightening of the forceps on the head of the new-born, during the childbirth. It is based on an original method bio-inspired reproducing the sense of touch, by micro-palpations. Complications in forceps deliveries are rare but their consequences might be dramatics. This situation could be avoided if the obstetrician knows the information concerning symmetry of the obstetrical forceps position on the fetal head and the related interface pressure. Indeed, forceps delivery is an emergency gesture which is normally not expected. The aims of the FORSAFE device are: first, to prevent instrumented delivery accidents, secondly, to provide a safe training of forceps technique. This paper presents the original method of the interface pressure measurement, the results obtained on a physical model of interface pressure as well as the corrections performed on the probe placed on the forceps. Abstract: The succession of drought years and excessive abstraction in the plain of Triffa caused deterioration in water quality and endangers future exploitation of groundwater resources. A combination of geophysical surveys, including electrical resistivity and hydrochemical data has been used to identify the geographical extension of salinization and identify its origin. Electrical conductivity measurements are used to show the history of salinization in space and time. In this paper, a first conceptual model of the brackish springs has been established. Abstract: We study in this paper the transport and deposition of suspended particles in saturated porous media. Some chromatographic short-pulse tests were performed in a laboratory column with a tracer and two types of suspended particles. A mathematical model was used to determine the hydrodispersive parameters and deposition rates from the breakthrough curves. The results show that the fitted parameters obtained vary with the flow rate and the characteristics of the suspended particles. We also observe, at high flow rates, that particles have a migration velocity higher than that of the conservative tracer. To cite this article: A. Benamar et al., C. R. Geoscience 337 (2005). GEOMETRY , *MATHEMATICS , *MATHEMATICAL models - Abstract
This paper concerns a generalization of the “Single Index Model” when the explanatory variable is valued in an infinite dimensional space. Such model will be called the “Single Functional Index Model”. The main contribution of this study is to propose a functional framework which includes the classical vectorial case. Pointwise asymptotic properties are stated under less restrictive conditions on the law of the explanatory variable than what it is usually assumed in the vectorial case. To cite this article: F. Man Ray’s series of paintings entitled Shakespearean Equations remains largely unknown even today, despite the artist’s fame. Perhaps that is partly because, like many Surrealist works, it so stubbornly resists interpretation; it is difficult to even grasp what one is looking at. The paintings depict mathematical models and their only Shakespearean characteristics are their titles, taken directly from Shakespeare’s canon. Nevertheless, I argue that a fruitful analysis is possible by understanding the pictures in relation to Shakespeare’s texts, the reception of Shakespeare in the twentieth century, and the reception of non-Euclidean geometry in artistic circles at the time. My study thus hinges on an assessment of the context in which Man Ray produced these works. But it also takes a closer look at two paintings in the series, uncovering the textual and pictorial sources they reference, parsing the layers of meaning which are thus built up. This paper does not set itself the impossible task of producing a definitive interpretation, which would, among other things, be contrary to the Surrealist spirit. I rather hope to explore what this particular act of appropriation uncovers about the reception of Shakespeare and mathematics.

Mathematicians use theological metaphors when they talk in the kitchen of mathematics. How essential is this talk? Have theological considerations and religious concepts influenced mathematics? Can mathematical models illuminate theology? Some authors have given positive answers to these questions, but they do not seem final. It is unclear how religious views influenced the work of those mathematicians who were also theologians. Religious background of some mathematical concepts could have been inessential. Mathematical models in theology have no predictive value. It is, however, important to continue the recently initiated search for the mutual influences of mathematics and theology. Understanding heat and mass transfers in porous materials is crucial in many areas of scientific research. Mathematical models have constantly evolved, their differences lying mainly in the choice of the driving potentials used to describe moisture flows, as well as in the complexity of characterizing the physical phenomena involved. Models developed in the field of Building Physics (HAM models) are used to describe the behavior of envelope parts and assess their impact on user comfort and energy performance. The water balance equation can be described in many ways; it is a function of the boundary conditions considered and the fact they induce high or low water content in the porous materials used. This paper gives an overview of various formulations for this equation that are found in the Building Physics literature. It focuses first on the physically based formulation of moisture balance, drawing on the Representative Elementary Volume (REV) concept, coupled with thermodynamic flow rates description. This is then reformulated in line with various main moisture state variables offering a wide variety of expressions that are compared with available models. This approach provides access to all secondary transport coefficients associated with the process of mathematical transformation. Particular emphasis is placed on the moisture storage function choice and its impact on the final mathematical formulations.

CARCINOGENESIS , *MATHEMATICAL models - Abstract
Carcinogenesis is generally viewed as the result of a disrupted equilibrium between the processes of proliferation, differenciation, migration and loss. In cell kinetics, perturbation of fundamental kinetic parameters such as the mitotic index or the growth fraction may reflect a carcinogenic process. In this paper, we present a system of deterministic differential equations describing the dynamical evolution of a cell population. We show that this model can account for asynchronicity of cells and simulate the fraction of labelled mitoses experiment as well. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article focuses on the history of insurance and risk management for financial markets in order to improve and expand economies. The practical implication of risk management focuses on buying an insurance policy, however large organizations discovered that such policies do not cover all requisites to control the effect of organizational risks and uncertainty. It highlights that in 1990s mathematical models and capital calculation formulas were developed to abate regulatory capital.
