A. Jainchill proposed the concept of “liberal authoritarianism” to interpret the ideology diffused by Sieyès and Roederer throughout the French Revolution – an ideology that guided, according to the historian, the establishment of the Consulate. This paper explores the authoritarian potentials of Sieyès and Roederer’s speeches during the French Revolution, but it argues that the full development of those authoritarian germs after Brumaire was the result of unforeseen historical circumstances.

This paper deals with the ideas of French liberal economists on the “labour question” during the years 1840. These economists are divided among themselves on the right of coalition for workers, but also on the limitation of hours for child. On the other hand, all they criticize the limitation of adults’ working hours, they fight Louis Blanc’s “ateliers sociaux” system and the “right to labour”, before, during and after the February Revolution of 1848. They plead for the formation of voluntary associations such as mutual aid associations, savings banks and even pension schemes. The more moderate among them do not reject the notion of "organization of labour" if it refers to institutions such as labour legislation and initiatives to promote technical education and the saving of workers.

The Hundred Days send a shock wave through the Coppet Group. Having stayed away from the political controversies agitating Europe, Sismondi welcomes Napoleon’s return from exile. While Germaine de Staël flees to Coppet, Sismondi actively supports the liberal orientation of the government in the press and in the Examen sur la Constitution française. This paper will examine his polemical writings about these political issues.

Cet article s’emploie à mettre au jour les modalités de l’écriture polémique staëlienne lorsqu’elle s’en prend à l’Angleterre., While remaining Germaine de Staël’s political model, England also evokes in her a much more polemical discourse, best expressed in the sixth part of the Considérations sur la Révolution française, written as England occupies France after Napoleon’s downfall. This paper will explore Staël’s polemical writing against England.

Il reste neutre de ce point de vue., Political liberalism is often seen as a conception of justice that pretends to be neutral but which actually relies on a particular conception of the good. It is said to promote an individualistic and mercantile way of life. Some thinkers advocate we put moral limits on markets in order to preserve our disposition to altruism. This paper defends the idea that liberalism can legitimately set limits on markets, but only for political reasons (redistribution) not for moral ones. It remains neutral in this respect.
