Introduction: Autonomy is often stated as an objective in TPE. However, this notion is not clearly defined and its operationalisation is left to the discretion of the teams. Insofar as representations guide practices, are representations of autonomy among healthcare professionals involved in TPE programmes a good indicator of their reported practices? Methods: An inductive qualitative study using semi-structured interviews was carried out with 8 healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, dieticians and pharmacists) practising in France, supplemented by a Q. sort questionary. Results and discussion: For the points on which there was agreement, autonomy was defined as the ability to implement self-monitoring and self-care skills. The point of disagreement in the representation of autonomy among carers lies in the following question: who defines autonomy, the patient or the carer? When autonomy is defined by the carer, carers seem to adopt more ambivalent postures (the aim of which is to confront the educator's norm). Conversely, when autonomy is defined by the patient, the carers seem to rely on more endogenous postures (the aim of which is for the patient to discover his or her own norm). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
