Search

The search for alternatives to helium-3 neutron counters forms a driving topic in today’s nuclear instrumentation. The cross section of gadolinium for thermal neutron capture makes this element a promising candidate. This thesis aims at scaling and evaluating different counting schemes based on the signature of these captures inside the detection medium. Three research areas have been explored: plastic scintillator-based detection, semiconductor-based detection and magnetic phase transition in gadolinium. The theoretical study of the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition in gadolinium has been concluded by a practical infeasibility. A method built on the insertion of a metal gadolinium core at the center of a large plastic scintillator has been designed. A significant signal between 3 and 8 MeV in the presence of a californium-252 source allows pulse height discrimination from natural gamma-ray background. Gadolinium-loaded plastic scintillators, compensated by bismuth-loaded scintillators, have been modeled, synthetized and tested in presence of gamma and neutron emitters. The concept of a compensation of gadolinium foil-covered sensors by terbium-covered sensors has been studied. The detection scheme has received a first experimental validation via cesium-137 and californium-252 exposures, for bismuth-loaded scintillating media and CdZnTe crystals., La recherche d’alternatives aux compteurs neutroniques à hélium 3 forme un thème de premier plan dans l’instrumentation nucléaire contemporaine. La section efficace de l’élément gadolinium pour la capture des neutrons thermiques en fait un candidat prometteur. L’objectif de cette thèse est de dimensionner et d’évaluer des schémas de comptage fondés sur la signature de ces captures dans le milieu de détection. Trois domaines de recherche ont été explorés : la détection à base de scintillateurs plastiques, la détection à base de semi-conducteurs et la détection par transition de phase magnétique dans le gadolinium. L’étude théorique portant sur la transition ferromagnétique-paramagnétique du gadolinium a été conclue par une non-faisabilité pratique. Une méthode reposant sur l’insertion d’un cœur métallique de gadolinium dans un scintillateur plastique de grand volume a fait l’objet d’un dimensionnement. Un signal significatif entre 3 et 8 MeV en présence d’une source de californium 252 autorise une discrimination, par la hauteur des impulsions, de la radioactivité gamma naturelle. Des scintillateurs plastiques dopés au gadolinium, compensés par des scintillateurs dopés au bismuth, ont été modélisés, synthétisés et testés en présence d’émetteurs gamma et neutron. Le principe d’une compensation de capteurs couverts de feuilles de gadolinium par des capteurs couverts de terbium a fait l’objet de deux études. Le schéma de détection a reçu une première validation expérimentale via une exposition à des sources de césium 137 et de californium 252, pour des milieux plastiques dopés au bismuth ainsi que des cristaux de CdZnTe.

This thesis aims at developing an x-ray imaging system intended for the Laser Méga Joule, within the framework of Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) experiments. ICF aims at yielding thermonuclear energy through laser-driven fusion of a deuterium-tritium mix. The operational function of our system is to acquire an image of the 10-30 keV x-rays emitted by the maximally compressed microballoon, with spatial resolution better than 10 µm. The presented system is only a part of a complete diagnostic system, which normally includes an x-ray optical subsystem. Our system conception largely takes vulnerability into account. The ignition phase of ICF yields 1016 neutrons, with energies scaling up to 14 MeV. The neutrons generate such a hard surrounding with effects scaling down from image degradation up to instrumentation destruction. The presented system consists in a scintillator which is focused on a CCD camera through a catadioptric image transport system. An innovation work has been lead on scintillators to provide an answer to specifications greatly influenced by vulnerability. Those thesis works lead to an imaging system allowing to deport the CCD camera by 4 meters from the scintillator, with 100 µm spatial resolution in the scintillator plane. Those works have paved the way to outlooks such as enhancement of organic loaded scintillators compositions and improvement of optical relay system., L'objet de cette thèse est le développement d'un système d'imagerie X destiné à être employé sur le Laser Méga Joule, dans le cadre des expériences de Fusion par Confinement Inertiel (FCI). La FCI consiste en la fusion par laser d'un mélange de deutérium et de tritium, afin de produire un gain d'énergie thermonucléaire. La fonction du système d'imagerie est d'imager entre 10 et 30 keV le rayonnement émis par le microballon ayant atteint sa compression maximale, avec une résolution spatiale meilleure que 10 µm. Le système proposé n'est qu'une partie d'un diagnostic complet, comprenant notamment un dispositif d'optique X. La conception de ce système tient en grande partie compte de la vulnérabilité en milieu radiatif. En phase d'allumage, la fusion du DT génère 1016 neutrons, dont la distribution d'énergie va jusqu'à 14 MeV. Ces neutrons sont à l'origine de l'ambiance radiative hostile à laquelle sera soumise le diagnostic, pouvant dégrader l'image acquise et endommager les dispositifs d'instrumentation. Le système proposé consiste en un scintillateur, imagé sur une caméra CCD par un relais catadioptrique. Un travail d'innovation a été effectué sur les scintillateurs, pour répondre aux spécifications influencées par la vulnérabilité. Les travaux de cette thèse ont abouti à un système imageur permettant un déport de la caméra CCD de 4 mètres, avec une résolution spatiale de 100 µm dans le plan du scintillateur. Des perspectives sont ouvertes, comme le développement de compositions de scintillateurs organiques chargés, ainsi que l'optimisation du relais optique.

This thesis was performed in the context of a project aiming to measure the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron at the Paul Scherrer Institute. Two aspects have been studied: The detection and the polarization analysis of ulracold neutrons. Three types of detectors have been tested at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL): The Cascade-U (GEM technology), the 3He gas detector and 6Li-doped glass scintillators (GS family). Their detection efficiency and their background sensitivity have been measured. The GS10 scintillator is competitive with the 3He gas detector under the conditions realized with the EDM spectrometer. A GS3/GS20 scintillator stack has enabled to improve the neutron/gamma discrimination. It has been found 20% less efficient than the 3He gas detector under the EDM spectrometer. The Cascade-U detector has been observed to be 20% less efficient than a 500 microns thick GS10 glass as confirmed by simulations. A new system for simultaneous spin analysis is presented. It consists of two independent detection systems (arms) which are each made of an adiabatic spin flipper, a spin analyzer, and a detector. The arms detect opposite spin components, allowing the simultaneous counting of both neutron spin orientations. A prototype mounted in horizontal configuration has been tested at ILL. The analyzing power of both arms has been measured to be 80%. The transmission of the system without spin analyzers has been found to be 50%., Cette thèse s'inscrit dans un nouveau projet de mesure du moment dipolaire électrique (EDM) du neutron à l'institut Paul Scherrer. Deux aspects ont été étudiés ici: la détection et l'analyse de polarisation de neutrons ultra-froids. Trois types de détecteurs ont été testés à l'Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL): le Cascade-U (technologie GEM), le compteur à gaz 3He et des scintillateurs dopés au 6Li (type GS). Leur efficacité de détection ainsi que leur sensibilité au bruit de fond ont été mesurées. Sous les conditions expérimentales du spectromètre EDM, le scintillateur GS10 s'est montré compétitif avec le détecteur à gaz 3He. Un système de double scintillateur GS3/GS20 a permis d'améliorer la séparation entre signaux neutrons et gammas. Il s'est avéré 20% moins efficace que le détecteur à gaz 3He sous le spectromètre EDM. Le Cascade-U a, quant à lui, montré qu'il était 20% moins efficace qu'un GS10 de 500 microns d'épaisseur comme l'ont conrmé des simulations. Un nouveau système d'analyse simultanée de spin est présenté. Il consiste en deux systèmes de détection (bras) possédant chacun un spin flipper adiabatique, un analyseur de spin, et un détecteur. Les bras détectent chacun une composante de polarisation, permettant ainsi un comptage des deux états de spin du neutron. Des tests d'un prototype monté en situation horizontale à l'ILL ont montré que le pouvoir d'analyse des bras était de 80%. La transmission du système sans analyseurs est de 50%.
