Ballistic trauma is the result of penetration into the body of a projectile: bullet, metal fragments from the envelope or the contents of an explosive device (grenade, mine, shell, bomb, etc.). The objective of this study was to determine the epidemiological and therapeutic profile of ballistic trauma in Goma, northeastern DRC. This retrospective, cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted in the General Surgery Department of the Goma Regional Military Hospital from 1 January to 31 December 2013. The wounded were all male. Their ages ranged from 18 to 80 years with an average of 33.7 years; 65.32% of them came from North Kivu province and were rank soldiers (70.02%), admitted to emergency care (60.89%). The limbs were the most affected region (69.89%) and fractures open the most observed lesions (71.24%). The average duration of hospitalization was 53.9 days. One hundred and twenty-one patients died (16.26%) in different tables: septic shock, hypovolemic shock and polytrauma. Ballistic trauma in northeastern DRC concerns young adult men of the ranks. The armed conflict is the main circumstance. The pacification of northeastern DRC could help reduce this tragedy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
