The research recommends deepening the study of scientific theories and searching for innovative performance methods in various branches of plastic art in general and in the field of drawing and painting in particular .

If the universe was no longer Newtonian, linear and predictable, and if literature was to “imitate” this new reality, world-texts were also supposed to explore anarchical and complex landscapes. To be able to investigate these anti- structure texts, literary and art critics adapted analytical tools from mathematical and physical theories – modern literature was associated mainly with the theory of quanta, and postmodern literature with chaos theory. In this paper, I engage with some of the main mathematical and physical concepts used as instruments in literary analysis, such as non-Euclidian geometries, the field concept, relativity, entropy, uncertainty principles, fractals, chaos, strange attractors, etc.

Through the years, movement has always been part and parcel of the art of painting; whether through illusion of physical movement on canvas or through directing viewers eyes within a painting. This research discusses the concept of movement through paintings utilizing the digital medium. It examines movement through two viewpoints, first: the illusion of physical movement, second: movement as a vital principle contributing to the success of a painting. In the paintings, physical movement is represented through painterly expression of birds and butterflies’ while flying, and movement as a design principle by using various painterly elements to express the concept of movement and rhythm.Moreover, the paintings are categorized in three groups; each group offers a visual representation of one of Isaac Newton’s laws of motion. However, they are fractal paintings based on Fractal Geometry; a field relating to the study of nonlinear chaotic systems. In the philosophy of science, chaos stands in opposition to Newton’s determinism. Thus, these paintings offer a kind of paradox between the topic it embodies, and the tool used to bring them to life.This research follows a descriptive analytical method to describe and analyze the concept of movement in both Newton’s laws and Chaos Theory. In addition, it also follows an experimental method through paintings representing deterministic movement through a chaotic tool. Results include relative success of use of digital Fractal Art to represent the illusion of actual movement in accordance with Newton’s determinism as well as movement as a painterly principle within the artworks.

Determinism is a doctrine or assumption best defined in the realm of the natural sciences. In this paper I explain in detail the four senses of determinism, from the most fundamental metaphysical sense, to the most complex epistemic (predictive) sense. I take as a starting point the analysis of determinism offered by Stephen Kellert. Each of these senses is then expounded and commented with a view to explore some of the implications of each of them in theoretical physics. The most important of my tasks in this paper is to differentiate between the metaphysical and epistemic consequences of the deterministic assumption. My objective is to show that determinism as an ontological tenet is capable of withstanding criticism, even though predictive determinism is likely to be false.

This essay dwells on Romanian translations of American and Canadian contemporary poetry in stand-alone collections and anthologies between World War II and 1989 against a complexity theory background that sets out to recognize irregularities (or chaotic phenomena) within what is otherwise commonly perceived as an orderly, predictive literary system. Employing a computational social network analysis approach, I examine a corpus of such translations that have been typically considered as part and parcel of a heavily controlled cultural system. The analysis shows that a sizeable part of the corpus were translations projects initiated, carried out, published, and promoted by the translators themselves — the result of a series of interactions in interpersonal and transnational networks of private individuals, rather than the result of established institutional policies and publication agendas. The essay also reflects on the need to carry out agent-oriented research in translation studies within the wider context of the digital social humanities, which present both the theoretical framework and the necessary methodologies for describing translators as agents of change.

Modern power system can identify component faults, isolate faults and resume operation quickly. In view of the problem that the distribution of line load in distribution network is not reasonable and it is easy to fall into the self-organized critical state, this paper introduces power flow entropy as an evaluation index to measure the robustness of power network reconstruction. Based on the power supply capability and node load level of distributed power supply in the process of network reconstruction, a strategy of island division is proposed. Then, a mathematical model is set up to minimize power flow entropy, network loss and node voltage drop, and the problem of network reconstruction after fault is solved by the improved chaos theory and binary particle swarm optimization algorithm. Finally, an example of IEEE-33 node distribution system is given to verify the feasibility of the proposed strategy and the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Background: Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has been the dominant acyl component of the membrane phosphoglycerides in neural signaling systems since the origin of the eukaryotes. In this paper, we propose, this extreme conservation, is explained by its special electrical properties. Based on the Pauli Exclusion Principle we offer an explanation on how its six methylene interrupted double-bonds provide a special arrangement of π-electrons that offer an absolute control for the precision of the energy of the signal. Precision is not explained by standard concepts of ion movement or synaptic strengthening by enhanced protein synthesis. Yet precision is essential to visual acuity, truthful recall and the exercise of a dedicated neural pathway. Concept: Synaptic membranes have been shown to actively incorporate DHA with a high degree of selectivity. During a learning process, this biomagnification will increase the proportion of membrane DHA with two consequential neuronal and synaptic enhancements which build into a David Marr type model of the real world: DHA induced gene expression resulting in enhanced protein synthesis; increased density of π-electrons which could provide memory blocks and provide for the preferential flow of a current in neural pathways. Proposal: Both the above imply memory from synaptic strengthening. We propose memory is achieved by the activation of neuronal synaptic activation with synaptic turnover resulting in enhanced membrane DHA, which in turn induces gene expression, protein synthesis and π-electron density. Repetition amplifies the process activating synapses, which form a matrix representing the memory. The electro-chemical potentials then fire the electrons as electromagnetic waves via the six methylene interrupted double bonds. These allow transmission at a specific energy level based on their quantum mechanical properties providing the precision required for faithful recall. It is difficult to conceive of protein synthesis alone providing for precision. Using the principle of the dual properties of photons and electrons we develop the idea of complex wave patterns representing the visual or auditory fields. These are likely to be non-computable. We suggest that harmonization of the electromagnetic waves can result in cohesion explaining recall and associations. The cohesion of electromagnetic flow leads to a surge above the resting level, which is recognized by the brain as, demonstrated in artificial, electrical stimulus during neurosurgery.

Based off an interview with the playwright, this article examines the scientific sources and artistic inspirations that influenced Stoppard’s creation and crafting of Arcadia. In probing the play’s structure, characters, and intellectual conceits, it also places Arcadia within Stoppard’s oeuvre, arguing that by melding two previous phases of his career, Arcadia marks the pinnacle of Stoppard’s playwriting while also standing as the best dramatic embodiment of Stoppard’s worldview.

With Arcadia Stoppard suggests that post-modernism, fragmentation and chaos are reclaimed if not by order, at least by determinism. In Chaos theory, Stoppard finds the oxymoronic and paradoxical vision of a world which becomes disorganized as a system but organized as chaos. The Stoppardian new problem play elects complexity as its thesis and conveys a message which is both conservative and iconoclastic: I will examine here, in the wake of other critics, how paradox, which is the foundation stone of Chaos mathematics, shapes all the components of the play—down to Stoppard’s epigrammatic style which, in my opinion, is both Newtonian and chaotic and becomes in turn a metaphor for chaos theory.

Abstract: Although the same simple laws govern cancer outcome (cell division repeated again and again), each tumour has a different outcome before as well as after irradiation therapy. The linear-quadratic radiosensitivity model allows an assessment of tumor sensitivity to radiotherapy. This model presents some limitations in clinical practice because it does not take into account the interactions between tumour cells and non-tumoral bystander cells (such as endothelial cells, fibroblasts, immune cells…) that modulate radiosensitivity and tumor growth dynamics. These interactions can lead to non-linear and complex tumor growth which appears to be random but that is not since there is not so many tumors spontaneously regressing. In this paper we propose to develop a deterministic approach for tumour growth dynamics using chaos theory. Various characteristics of cancer dynamics and tumor radiosensitivity can be explained using mathematical models of competing cell species. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The oncologist is confronted daily by questions related to the fact that any patient presents a specific evolution for his cancer: he is challenged by very different, unexpected and often unpredictable outcomes, in some of his patients. The mathematical approach used today to describe this evolution has recourse to statistics and probability laws: such an approach does not ultimately apply to one particular patient, but to a given more or less heterogeneous population. This approach therefore poorly characterizes the dynamics of this disease and does not allow to state whether a patient is cured, to predict if he will relapse and when this could occur, and in what form, nor to predict the response to treatment and, in particular, to radiation therapy. Chaos theory, not well known by oncologists, could allow a better understanding of these issues. Developed to investigate complex systems producing behaviours that cannot be predicted due to a great sensitivity to initial conditions, chaos theory is rich of suitable concepts for a new approach of cancer dynamics. This article is three-fold: to provide a brief introduction to chaos theory, to clarify the main connecting points between chaos and carcinogenesis and to point out few promising research perspectives, especially in radiotherapy. An event series marks the end of the second millennium and the arrival of a new era. The world became open and chaotic, it no longer is a clock mechanism. The existing theories doesn't detect completely the nature of the globalization and its consequences. They apprehended the human condition in a fragmentary manner, each concentrating on the politics, the economics, the society, the culture. The optimists approaches were accompanied by of others, pessimistic. Their difficulties are at once ontologiques, epistémologiques, phenomenological... Despite all their pieces of information, one does not know what we arrive. The globalization is a movement influencing all the aspects of human life, all the regions of the world. The civilization prohibitionist a condition that allows the concomitant production of the strength, wealth, social, cultural interaction, innovation. The union of a vision of the world and of a historic system that produces a value body can be born a civilization. A society built around information produces more liberty and equality, things that people value more in a modern democracy. The relation between individuals, liberties, society and solidarity within the system that generates the complex life of today, needs the art to equilibrate "the eternal yesterday" and "the eternal tomorrow", globalization and pluralism. Our world vilage will not be able to survive if we don't learn to live together and to drop the high barriers around us. Globalization has launched challenges and demands responses. Quality of the cutting machining process of martensitic steel is analysed as a function of the cutting speed. This analysis is performed by topographical measurement of tooled surfaces. A statistical analysis taking into account more than hundred roughness parameters allows us to prove that the mean slope value of the profile is the best parameter to characterise the cutting speed effect on the surface topography. This roughness parameter discriminates the cutting speed threshold between two cutting stages and moreover, discriminates also the cutting process in each stage (the usual Ra parameter is unable to do it). A mathematical treatment based on the chaos theory is then processed. From the profile of the machined surface, a two-dimensional attractor is constructed. Thanks to an original method, it is shown that this attractor depends on two mathematical functions: the first one characterises the work hardening during the cutting process and the second is related to thermal softening. For a critical cutting speed, these two mechanisms are linked together and lead to a single attracting final state. This stage is governed by generalised work hardening. Above this critical speed, the attractor will present a two branches bifurcation, which means that the cutting process is now alternating between the two different states. This chaotic mode is related to the instability between work hardening and thermal softening. This instability is confirmed by a fractal analysis based on the reconstructed profiles from the attractor : the higher the cutting speed, the higher the fractal dimension. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we study the diffusion of particle accelerated in an electromagnetic wave packet, through a numerical simulation of the relativistic standard map. We contribute to the field of stochastic diffusion of accelerated particles as a function of the stochastic parameter K, specially the transition between partial and global stochasticity, and we also compare our theoretical computation of the diffusion with numerical results. A direct numerical simulation is carried out to describe the amplitude vacillation phenomena appearing between two successive steady regular waves flows in an air-filled differentially heated rotating annulus. For a fixed temperature difference, ΔT=30 K, when varying progressively the rotation rate, we have obtained the occurrence of the two amplitude vacillation instabilities observed experimentally by Read et al. (J. Fluid Mech. 238 (1992) 599–632) with a high Prandtl number fluid. The first one, denoted AV is characterized by a doubly periodic temporal behaviour with a periodic variation of wave amplitudes, while the second one corresponds to a torus-3 quasi-periodic or chaotic motion with the presence of a modulation in the wave amplitudes evolution. Background: Many clinical and biological parameters have nonlinear chaotic fluctuations. These variations result in unexpected pseudo-random transitions. In these models, few risk factors can lead to unexpected phenomena if oscillations and self-reinforcement patterns occur. Complex rhythms could ease the ability of a physiological system to adapt and react quickly to a constantly changing environment., Objectives: It has been proposed that several psychiatric disorders and developmental disorders are characterized by a loss of complex rhythm in favor of a more organized pattern. We examine evidence to support these assumptions in literatures., Methods: We performed a literature review of the main computerized databases (Medline, PubMed) and manual searches of the literature concerning non dynamic rhythms in time series analysis, in adults with psychiatric disorder and children with developmental disorder. These results were interpreted through a developmental approach that highlights the role of the learning process in the emergence of abilities., Results: Analysis of clinical scores and electroencephalographic data have found that subjects with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, tested over a time series, have lower chaotic rhythms compared with healthy subjects. Growing children share several properties of a complex system: the interdependence of developmental axes (motor, emotional, language, social skills), multiple hierarchical levels (i.e. genetic, biological, environmental, and cultural), the two-way transactions between the child and his environment, and the sensitivity to initial conditions. This could explain the difficulty to predict the emergence of abilities or the long-term prognosis of impairment in children. This limitation is not only due to errors in the explanatory model or the lack of explanatory variable. It is also caused by instability, which is a core characteristic of a chaotic system., Conclusion: The study of chaotic rhythms in time-series clinical and nonclinical data (e.g. EEG, functional neuroimaging) could improve the prediction of an acute event, such as relapse of mood disorder.
