Organizational ability to create and successfully manage knowledge, in its different forms, has become the basis of superior organizational performance and sustainable competitiveness. Nowadays, especially in developed economies, the importance of knowledge and intangible resources, i.e., intellectual capital, is rapidly increasing. The intangibles have a dominant role and gradually are replacing physical resources as the most important production factors of organizational success. Many studies gave significant findings in the field of intellectual capital measurement and its conceptualization, but there still is not a worldwide consensus on the dimensions of intellectual capital. Previous research focused mainly on traditional intellectual capital dimensions—human, relational, and structural capital—neglecting organizational renewal capability as a dimension of intellectual capital. There are no systematic findings on whether there are interrelationships of traditional intellectual capital dimensions in transition economies. This paper addresses and empirically tests the complementary role of traditional intellectual capital dimensions in organizational renewal, in the context of a transition economy. Primary data were collected using previously psychometrically validated questionnaires from 224 organizations in the Republic of Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS‐SEM) was used to test hypothesized relationships. Research findings suggest that renewal capital has a significant role. Furthermore, it demonstrates the intensity of relational and structural capital connection with knowledge renewal, highlighting the significance of different forms of knowledge in organizational renewal. Managers can find some useful directions to efficiently manage intellectual capital and to be aware of the presence of knowledge resource interrelationships and their importance for organizational renewal.

The aim of the work is to analyse the relationship between entrepreneurial capital (EC), renewal capital (RC) and trust capital (TC), considered as standalone components of intellectual capital (IC), and firms’ performances. To this end, an empirical research based on a sample of Italian companies was carried out. The survey’s results show that EC, RC and TC have a positive influence on Italian medium-sized and large companies’ performance. Its findings contribute to understand how EC, RC and TC affect the creation of value in organisations and enable these organisations to improve their performance through a better management of knowledge-based resources.

According to past research, intellectual capital (IC) is a key driver of innovation performance and subsequent competitive advantage. Given the human nature of innovation activities (i.e. human beings produce innovations), human capital (HC) deserves special attention. Although researchers in the past have analysed the HC-innovation linkage, we still do not have a detailed understanding of how specific human capabilities affect innovation. Furthermore, the technology level of the firm could generate major differences in the HC-innovation relationship as it influences both the type of knowledge prevalent within the company and the radicalness of the innovations developed. Nevertheless, former literature has largely omitted technology level when studying the IC-innovation linkage. To fill this research gap, this study examines the role of human attributes, including knowledge, skills and motivation (i.e. traditional HC), learning capability (i.e. renewal capital) and entrepreneurial attitude (i.e. entrepreneurial capital) on innovation in high-tech versus low-tech companies. To that end, survey data from 180 Spanish companies were analysed by means of structural equation modelling based on partial least squares. The results obtained confirm that the influence of HC, renewal capital and entrepreneurial capital on innovation differs depending on the technology level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article comprises analysis of theoretical and practical aspects of measurement of the city's intellectual capital. This article includes analysis of the intellectual capital concept and possibilities of its application at the city level, generalization of the organization intellectual capital models and principles, which, considering the macro-level context and overview of tendencies of economic growth, are applied for measurement of intellectual capital of the city. The newly created city's intellectual capital balance index is presented. The empirical application of the method proved that it is an appropriate tool for the measurement of the city's intellectual capital within a country, which corresponds to the second level NUTS of the European Union. This article is one of the ambitions to promote the methodological background for urban governance and improvement of intellectual capital as well as competitiveness of Lithuanian cities. The city's intellectual capital balance index can be used as the tool for assessment of efficiency and timeliness of the urban and national development strategies, also as the tool for publicity for innovation, creativity and “smartness” of the city or the whole country.
