The role of green finance is to develop green industry mechanisms in areas including transportation, building, water preservation, clean energy production, storage, and distribution, which ultimately results in emissions and waste reduction, biodiversity habitat protection, and pollution control. Therefore, recognizing the significance of green finance, this research investigates the asymmetric role of green finance and clean energy in the reduction of carbon emissions along with economic growth, foreign direct investment, and urbanization as control antecedents using the econometric model of "non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL)" for the period 2000–2020 in ASEAN nations. According to the NARDL outcomes, green finance, and clean energy positive shock enhances the ecological quality and negative shocks harm environmental quality. In addition, economic growth, and urbanization contribute to harmful pollutants. Therefore, the results recommend ASEAN nations' governments, environmentalists, and policymakers, devise strong financial mechanisms, and develop long-term green investment strategies to attract green finance and investment opportunities to bridge the gap in clean energy. Using the data of listed agriculture-affiliated companies with customer-supplier association information, we examine the diffusion effect of the digitalisation of listed agricultural companies on the digital transformation of agriculture-affiliated enterprises from the perspective of supply chain. We show that the supply chain diffusion effect of digitalisation mainly exists in ‘customer enterprises-suppliers enterprises’ and ‘leading enterprises-other enterprises’. And the digital transformation of agriculture-affiliated customer enterprises forces suppliers to respond to customer innovation demands, thereby improving the digitalisation level of suppliers, while leading agriculture-affiliated enterprises improve the digitisation level of other agriculture-affiliated enterprises in the supply chain network through knowledge flow. Additionally, the supply chain diffusion effect of digital transformation is stronger under the conditions of smaller ‘digital divide’, lower geographic distance, the downstream consumer end and more government support of agriculture-affiliated enterprises. This article concerns the issue of price sensitivity on the global wheat market, understood as the ratio of the change in prices to the change in the volume of harvests and stocks as supply variables. This sensitivity was investigated using a model approach, applying it to the market as a whole and to exporting and importing countries. To capture the essence of this sensitivity, a simplifying assumption was made about demand as an a priori given variable. The results of the study indicate that with large amplitudes of changes in both the volume of harvests and stocks as well as price levels, the level of price sensitivity, i.e., how prices react in percentage terms to a 1% change in harvests and stocks, is relatively low. At the same time, this sensitivity is greater for harvests than for stocks. The aim of the study is to present general trends in the price sensitivity coefficient. The period of empirical analysis covers almost 60 years. The results of the study are of both cognitive and utilitarian significance, in particular for methods of prediction and forecasting of the market situation and for agricultural policy formulation. It is also a politically important issue at the moment.

The aim of the article is to identify changes in the production and export of poultry from Poland and the factors influencing the development of this market. The main methods used to achieve the aim of the study are comparative analysis over time, structure analysis, and correlation coefficient. The study mainly used annual data collected by the Ministry of Finance and Statistics Poland. During the period under study, Poland was self-sufficient in poultry production, which increased, except for 2021, when it decreased, which was primarily caused by the very dynamic transmission of avian influenza in poultry. A progressive process of production concentration is observed in the sector. The share of farms keeping the smallest flocks of broiler chickens decreased, and the share of farms keeping the largest flocks increased. Imports of poultry products in relation to exports were small. Production was much higher than domestic market demand. About half of the production was exported. Between 2014 and 2022, poultry meat and offal had the largest share in the export structure. One of the challenges for market development is the greater intensity of avian influenza, which directly or indirectly affects various participants in the supply chain. Therefore, there is a need to create plans for dealing with the appearance of avian influenza in poultry. In the case of export, the consequence of the occurrence of avian influenza in poultry may be the need to change some geographical export directions, which should be included in such plans. It is also necessary to prepare a plan for the management of surplus poultry in the event of a ban on ritual slaughter. The development scale creates a need for systematic research of this sector.

Consumer preferences for beef products are diverse and progressing with societal changes. Long-standing product quality attribute preferences are being extended with increased attention to sustainability – especially environmental impacts and social concerns of cattle and beef production. Cattle producers need to understand this evolution to make informed production and marketing decisions. This study reports results of a nationally representative survey of 3,001 US consumers measuring beef product preferences. While beef product freshness, safety, price, and flavor are most often cited as most important, environmental and societal concerns are important to a notable segment of consumers. Income and prices are important factors that determine and decide households consumption decisions and behavior.

We develop a theoretical framework and present a corresponding empirical analysis of the Food and Drug Administration’s irrigation water quality regulatory standard under the Food Safety Modernization Act using lettuce as a case study. We develop a stochastic price endogenous partial equilibrium model with recourse to examine the standard’s efficacy under various scenarios of foodborne illness severity, standard implementation, demand response to foodborne outbreaks, and irrigation costs. The stringency of regulation is evaluated with endogenous producer response to regulatory requirements and corresponding implications for economic surplus. The baseline results show that in the case of the lettuce market, the proposed microbial irrigation water quality regulation in the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is not cost effective relative to the existing Leafy-Greens Marketing Agreements relying on water treatment for mitigation of microbial contamination. However, FSMA can be cost effective if water treatment is sufficiently expensive.

Consumers often struggle to make their choice in the highly diversified wine market. With wine being an experience good, consumers must rely on extrinsic characteristics, e.g., information on the label. Thus, easily available quality signals like consumer ratings have become an increasingly useful and widespread tool. Vivino is one of the largest online wine communities with over 60 million users, which have more than doubled since 2018. Hence, users have easy access to peer ratings, while established wine expert ratings are being challenged. This study analyzes data from Vivino to explore factors affecting consumer ratings at different price points, considering several wine attributes like geographical indications, brand, and the so-called "community effect." We show that there is a small but significant community effect on wine's perceived quality related to its popularity among users of the Vivino community, as well as effects from specific wine attributes. Moreover, we estimate a hedonic quantile model on similar price ranges to compare the effect of the same regressors on wine prices. Results contribute to a better understanding of how different factors affect consumers' wine evaluations, allowing to compare their effect on the "pure" consumer preference (i.e., consumer ratings) and market value. The agricultural sector is essential for economic growth. However, agricultural performance can be limited by factors such as climatic risks. This paper aims to analyse the effect of climate extreme events on selected food crop yield in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The study uses data from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) database for maize, rice, and sorghum yields. Also, we used data obtained from the International Disaster Database of the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) for floods and droughts over the period 1990–2020. The data were analysed based on the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS). The results showed that climate extreme events negatively affected maize, rice and sorghum yields. Also, the findings showed that floods and droughts in past years negatively influence current yields of maize, rice and sorghum. Moreover, agricultural labour force, fertilizer and financial development are the main transmission channels through which floods and droughts can affect maize, rice and sorghum yields. The study concludes by recommending that policies aimed at promoting climate change adaptation measures as well as agricultural insurance could make the agriculture sector more resilient to climate extreme events and in turn that could improve agricultural productivity and reduce food insecurity.

AbstractThis study aims to analyze the short and long-term transmission of rice prices at the farmer and consumer levels in West Java Province. This study uses monthly data on rice prices at the producer (farmer) and consumer levels from 2014–2020 in West Java Province, Indonesia. Meanwhile, the method used in this study is Error Correction Model regression. The results show the existence of market integration and asymmetry in the vertical transmission of rice prices between farmers and consumers, both in the short and long term. The causes of asymmetric price transmission are the presence of uncompetitive behavior or abuse of market power among intermediary traders, especially in concentrated markets, as well as adjustment costs and menu costs. Therefore, the government needs to monitor rice prices regularly to ensure consumer affordability and profitability for farmers. In addition, the government must also have accurate information to identify irregularities or abuse of market power. Furthermore, the government needs to create policies encouraging the involvement of regionally-owned enterprises, the central government, and the private sector in the rice trading sector.

AbstractBased on three fundamental theories, commitment-trust theory of relationship marketing, transaction cost theory, and force field theory, this study has examined the factors affecting collaboration in the agricultural supply chain in the North Central region of Vietnam by analyzing EFA, CFA, and SEM. The research results have shown that trust and commitment are two important antecedents of collaboration, and they have a positive effect on collaboration in the agricultural supply chain. Risk has a negative effect on collaboration and is explained based on the concept of understanding the nature of risk and the characteristics of the research context. The dark side of collaboration is opportunistic behavior, testing the influence of this factor and concluding that it is necessary to limit opportunistic behavior to enhance collaboration in the agricultural supply chain. It is shown that there is a difference in the level of collaboration among specific agricultural sectors in the North Central region, in which collaboration in cultivation and livestock sectors has a low level, but in aquaculture, it is higher. Similarly, contractual relationships are essential for promoting collaboration in the agricultural supply chain. From these research results, the study has proposed some practical solutions to increase collaborations in the agricultural supply chain in the North Central region of Vietnam.

Causal flow analyses combined with time series analyses are used to examine price relationships among fresh broiler retail markets (Northeast, South, Midwest, and West). Results indicate structural changes have occurred in this industry. Reasons for changes in price relationships include the perishable nature of fresh broilers, along with vertical integration and increases in production and concentration in the industry. The four markets are integrated, but the level of integration has decreased over time. With the markets becoming more exogenous, there may be a decrease in society's welfare. Both home-grown school feeding (HGSF) and short food supply chain (SFSC) emphasize on proximity and aim to strengthen the competitiveness of local smallholder farmers. From a theoretical perspective, HGSF implemented as a type of SFSC could help deliver synergies. A pivotal question is how HGSF can be combined with SFSC and the benefits and drawbacks of such combination. Using an HGSF program which was implemented as an integral part of a free preschool lunch pilot in South Central China, this paper shows that HGSF and SFSC (in its full term) could be combined through one structured demand intervention. This study uses both qualitative and quantitative materials. Qualitative data were collected through focus group discussions with government and preschool staff, parents or caregivers, cooks, World Food Programme representatives and other stakeholders involved in the pilot program. The quantitative part used both small panel data and cross-sectional data from 106 smallholders. This study analyzes the design, implementation, good practices, benefits and constraints of the HGSF-SFSC model. We find that direct purchase from smallholder farmers was linked with higher income and production and dietary diversity. Moreover, this study identifies several constraints of the current HGSF-SFSC model. The policy implications for sustaining and scaling up the current pilot are discussed in the paper. This paper shows how a strategy of reducing greenhouse gas emissions combined with economic cycles can lead to particular consumption behaviours. We are assuming the existence of an "economic" demand for "non-green" goods and a "social" demand for "green" goods. We are also assuming the existence of a dispersion of household characteristics organised around an average profile in each class. In times of sustained economic recession, incomes of individual agents fall. Therefore, the budgetary constraint becomes stronger, and falling incomes will have a negative impact on the demand for "green" goods. Consumers with higher incomes will reduce their demand for "green" goods, creating pressure on prices and quantities. As consumers abandon the "green" goods market, they will switch to the "non-green" goods market, especially as prices are lower there, which will stimulate demand and create a new upward pressure on the demand for "non-green" goods. We use a dynamic model of the U.S. apple industry separated into organic and conventional production to better measure the impacts of pest or disease outbreaks on producers and consumers, along with an equilibrium displacement model to simulate welfare effects from various shocks compared to a baseline. Our results show that the impacts of the outbreaks differ between organic and conventional production methods. Growers' and consumers' responses to shocks differ widely across the industry. Using an experimental auction, we estimate demand for stress-tolerant rice varieties (STRVs) in eastern India, where frequent covariate production risks are affecting the welfare of smallholder farmers. STRVs have the potential to cope with low- to medium-intensity abiotic stresses and stabilize rice productivity in stress-prone rice ecosystems. The experiment involves a series of farmers’ decision-makings in the context of STRV seed purchase, set in an environment with minimal social frictions and improved information availability. Survival analysis, double hurdle, and sequential logit models are employed to understand farmers’ bidding and buying behavior. The results indicate that the demand for STRVs is highly elastic and is in line with reported market behavior. Willingness to pay (WTP) estimates for initial and latent buyers are coinciding, we find evidence of strategic underbidding by latent buyers in the experiment. Information asymmetry resulting from lack of awareness and previous experience in using STRVs is found to be the major reason for such decisions. Given the high elasticity of demand, STRV seed market distortion through subsidy, price cue, and an information campaign on variety characteristics and benefits could be an effective policy mix for overcoming the constraints related to price and asymmetric information and thereby increase adoption.

This study investigates the determinants of coffee prices received by growers in Costa Rica, paying attention to the impact of environmental, regional, quality, and international aspects in a panel data set for the period 2008–2016. We identify three groups of variables that affect domestic coffee prices. Some of them are external to the control of the coffee growers, such as the international price of green coffee or the power of multinationals; others, such as the altitude where the coffee is harvested or the berries' yield, are related to coffee quality but difficult to modify by coffee growers. The focus of our study is on the third group, which refers to differentiation strategies related to environmental certifications. More specifically, we consider two particularly relevant certifications, which are Fairtrade mills and organic coffee. We find that organic coffee berries received higher prices, but Fairtrade mills report lower average prices than other, non-certified, buyers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the effects of genetic improvement policies on dairy production, with a particular emphasis on Artificial Insemination projects. Furthermore, we evaluate the major barriers and challenges of Artificial Insemination projects including water scarcity. Using the data-driven synthetic control method, we found evidence that the Artificial Insemination projects caused milk production to increase by 59 thousand tons on average from 2008 to 2018. This could be correlated with food security (i.e., synergies), but increased dairy production may also place strain on Senegal's water resources (i.e. trade-offs). To achieve a more efficient outcome, Senegalese dairy policies should consider the negative externalities of these projects on water resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes an approach to determine efficient release prices on the Bordeaux en primeur (primary) market. The model exploits information from the secondary market to estimate efficient release prices. We apply the model to a representative sample of wines from the 2021 vintage. The results show that most chateaux released their wines at prices that were too high. The median overpricing is 5.2% but exceeds 30% for some wines. This situation may be partially attributed to excessively uniform pricing caused by the tendency of chateaux with similar status to release their wines at similar price levels. This study builds upon the existing literature on the Working curve and backwardation to explore the impact of storage regimes on the volatility measures of substitute agricultural commodity markets. We investigate the impact of commodity fundamentals (storage regime and stocks-to-use ratio), commodity-specific financial variables (options hedging pressure-long and -short), world economic activity, market-wide volatility index, seasonality, and time-to-maturity on nearby and deferred implied volatility (IV) series of selected commodity pairs of corn-soybean and winter wheat-spring wheat. Our work confirms that, in some cases, grain and oilseed IV derived from options premia respond to shocks in commodity (and substitute commodity) fundamentals which are in line with the behaviour of volatility in futures markets. Own-storage regime effects on price variability are stronger in the selected markets, while spillover effects from substitute commodity storage regimes show a modest impact on volatilities. We also find some evidence for the stocks-to-use ratio of both corn and soybean to impact both their own and each other's IV, while options hedging pressure has some impact only on wheat IVs. We analyse a panel of 25 European-countries to provide novel estimates of monthly own-price, cross-price, and income elasticities of natural-gas-demand from 2005 to 2020. We find that: first, there is an European Standard Behaviour (ESB) with a strong-seasonal component. Second, we identify three different patterns from the ESB: 1) France, Denmark and Estonia present slightly positive elasticities in the short-run and a lack of sensitivity to own-price variations in the long-run –we argue this phenomenon is due to a higher weight of heating demand-. 2) Latvia presents a lower sensitivity to own-price variations than the ESB -we argue due to the role of natural gas as a unique backup technology in the power sector-. 3) In Portugal, natural gas showed the highest own-price elasticities – we argue that natural gas is used mainly in the power sector with substitutive technologies-. Finally, we find that Covid-19-lockdowns highly impacted natural-gas-demand, confirming the “double-heating-effect”.

Many cattle producers and producer organizations are concerned that the live cattle negotiated market has become too thin. The percentage of live cattle procured through direct negotiations has declined below 20%, while the percentage procured through formulas has increased to more than 60%. Most formulas are based on directly negotiated cattle prices. Proposed legislation mandating that a larger percentage of live cattle be procured through negotiations represents a market intervention. We show that live cattle futures prices are good proxies for negotiated cash prices, while being less restrictive for meeting proposed cash cattle procurement percentage requirements. As the market for fine-wine investing matures, basic questions of portfolio strategy remain unexplored. I evaluate how adding fine wine from the superstar châteaux of Bordeaux's Right Bank might complement the traditional focus on the five first-growths of Bordeaux's Left Bank. Fundamentals for the Right Bank's superstars are attractive: they produce roughly an order of magnitude less, face different production conditions, and receive equally impressive critical reviews. However, they receive far less attention than their Left Bank counterparts. To examine returns over the long run, I hand-collected 10,885 prices for eight wines from an archive of 391 Sherry-Lehmann catalogs, a New York City retailer, which began at the end of Prohibition. Using these historical price records, I compare the real returns from investing in the five Premier Cru to a portfolio that adds three superstar châteaux from the Right Bank: Ausone, Cheval Blanc, and Petrus. I find the geometric-average annual return was 6.78% in real terms from 1938 to 2017 for the joint portfolio, less than 0.01% different, but with better risk-reward as measured by the Sharpe ratio. Additionally, I find the life cycle of aging is substantially different across the two Banks, which could provide further diversification benefits for the strategic investor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the relative importance of various attributes, including varietal, brands, and geographic origin, in explaining retail wine prices for the United States market. We use a metric based on the Shapely value, from cooperative game theory, in the context of an empirical hedonic price equation estimated using a large sample of retail wine sales for home consumption over the period 2007–2019. We find that brands alone explain more than 70% of the variation in wine prices, but geographic origin and varietals retain additional explanatory power. The agri-food sector contributes significantly to economic and social advancements globally despite numerous challenges such as food safety and security, demand and supply gaps, product quality, traceability, etc. Digital technologies offer effective and sustainable ways to these challenges through reduced human interference and improved data-accuracy. Innovations led by digital transformations in the agri-food supply chains (AFSCs) are the main aim of ‘Agri-Food 4.0’. This brings significant transformations in the agri-food sector by reducing food wastage, real-time product monitoring, reducing scalability issues, etc. This paper presents a systematic review of the innovations in the agri-food for digital technologies such as internet-of-things, artificial intelligence, big data, RFID, robotics, block-chain technology, etc. The employment of these technologies from the ‘farm to fork’ along AFSC emphasizes a review of 159 articles solicited from different sources. This paper also highlights digitization in developing smart, sensible, and sustainable agri-food supply chain systems.
