This article is based on the 3-day workshop, “Botanical Colour Laboratory”, which mapped the colours of the landscape of Osterøy, Norway, through land crafting with natural dyes. Land crafting builds an understanding of, and connection to, the land. This article discusses the multi-sensorial aspects and the relations between humans and non-humans in the process of collective plant dyeing. The terms: situated knowledge, orientations, the unruliness of things, production of locality and mujaawarah (neighbouring) are used to reflect on the workshop and its entangled relationships to matter, landscape, crafting and knowledge. These terms are woven together with the experiences of the “Botanical Colour Laboratory”. The research is conducted as a creative practice with an ethnographical approach. By combining written texts with video and drawings, I have made new multi-modal field notes. These field notes give a glimpse into the multifaceted processes of plant dyeing. The research shows that projects like “Botanical Colour Laboratory” are highly relevant and can influence orientations to our surroundings through collective land crafting processes with our living and non-living neighbours.

The new sensor with sensitive pH-response is highly desirable material for monitoring wound infection. However, most of the indicator dyes used are synthesized by chemical methods, which pose a potential threat to human health. Therefore, we developed a pH sensor based on sappanwood plant dye. The pigment is extracted from natural plants and dyed on the fabric to obtain the pH-response discoloration of fabric. The change color rules are characterized by UV-visible-light spectrophotometer and the concept of CIELab space. The discoloration time of two kinds of dyed fabrics is also obtained. The experimental results show that the color of the dyed fabric are three different colors visible to the naked eye at pH 6, 7 and 8. The response time of color change is 18 s and 7 s, respectively. The results showed that the plant dyestuff of sappanwood had the same response to change color as the chemical dyestuff and could be used as an indicator for wound monitoring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chicken is one of the most preferred protein sources for nonvegetarian consumers around the world. Due to the huge demand for quality chicken products, the processors and the suppliers need to maintain the optimum chicken quality during the supply chain. Therefore, this study was aimed to develop a suitable device to monitor chicken quality in supply chain. In the present study, a natural dye extracted from coleus blumei leaves (Plectranthus scutellarioides) has been used to develop a chicken quality monitoring sensor. This sensor has been tested for its color-changing ability by attaching inside the packet of fresh chicken at different storage temperatures viz., 4 ± 1, 10 ± 1, 15 ± 1, 25 ± 1, and 37 ± 1 °C. During the storage of chicken the changes in quality parameters (physicochemical, microbiological, and sensory attributes) were measured at regular intervals. The sensor showed a color change during the progress of the storage period and this was well in concurrence with the changes in the quality parameters of the chicken. The results showed the potentiality of the coleus blumei leaves dye-based sensor as a monitoring device to detect the quality of chicken during its storage at various temperatures. Abstract This paper identifies the materials used to make a brocade belt belonging to the Qajar courtiers in Iran. This belt consists of two fabric types: red support and golden brocade. Accordingly, this paper examined the skin and tannin type, fiber types, dyeing agents, mordant, and metal wrapping of brocade yarns and metal buckle. Technical imaging, ESI–MS, FORS, FTIR and SEM–EDS were used to identify the materials. Multi-band imaging methods included Vis, UVL, IRR, and UVR, in which UVFC and IRFC images were obtained after processing. The results showed that cotton yarn was used in both fabrics. The red fabric yarns were dyed using cochineal and alum mordant. Also, the yellow brocade yarns were dyed using catechins-rich plants, and in this dyeing process, polyphenols and alum have been as mordant. Madder-dyed yarns are also found in parts of the belt. Examination of the metal wrapping of brocade yarns suggests using strips of copper-nickel alloy with a thin layer of gold-silver alloy. This secondary coating protects the copper-nickel strips and increases their golden luster. The leather analysis of the leather parts also indicated the using cattle/calfskin tanned with gallotannins. Belt buckle analysis also shows the use of brass alloy with a high percentage of zinc, leading to a golden sheen and the buckle desired strength. The results show the use of low-cost materials in the manufacture of clothing for the lower levels of the Qajar court.

ABSTRACTAgricultural waste represents a potential source of raw materials as natural dyes. The peel from pomegranate (Punica granatum) is a waste product, it is used in the textiles industry as dye. The objective of the study is to improve dyeing properties of pomegranate peel dyed silk fabric. We analyzed the pigment composition of pomegranate peel extract through ultraviolet-visible and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy; evaluated natural mordants and metallic mordants on fabrics dyed with pomegranate peel extracts by testing the K/S value, color characteristics, and color fastness; examined the morphology of dyed fabrics before and after color fixing treatment by scanning electron microscopy. The major pigment component in pomegranate peel is ellagic acid. An orthogonal array experiment revealed that the optimum dyeing conditions were pH 9, 60°C 60 min for silk fibers. Under the natural mordant, the K/S value of dyed fabric could acquire maximum (8.70). Moreover, the K/S value and color fastness of dyed fabrics could be further enhanced to 11.74 and level 5 by color-fixing treatment of natural gum rosin. Overall, the dyed silk samples with pomegranate peel represented good dyeing properties with natural mordant and natural color-fixing agent of gum rosin.

With the advantage of being eco-friendly, plant dyes have been noticed by textile practitioners and the public. However, as a result of the rapid advancements in industrial manufacturing, the traditional knowledge of plant dyes is dying, which demands heightened attention and protection. To document this traditional knowledge in the Baiyi community, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 288 informants from four villages (Five stars village, Hedong village, Nanpo village, and Shang' eping village) of the Liuhe Yi Nationality Township, Heqing County, Dali Prefecture. Based on the ethnobotanical investigation of plant dyes, there were 11 plant species from 11 genera in 10 families that have been used as dyes. The Baiyi Indigenous peoples mainly extract the dye from the roots, leaves, fruits, etc., of the herbaceous plants. Through quantitative analysis, the frequency of use (f value) and cultural importance indices (CI value) of Viburnum cylindricum are the highest. The optimal conditions for dyeing cotton fabric with V. cylindricum were found to be a pH of 5, dyeing for 30 min at 60 °C by an orthogonal array design. As for the dyeing properties, biomordants provided better properties when used in dyeing cotton fabric with V. cylindricum compared with metallic mordants. This study reveals the great potential of the application of plant dyes in the Baiyi Indigenous peoples community; it will be beneficial to the economic development of ethnic areas, the inheritance of ethnic culture and the protection of biodiversity. Dye is one of the major components for high power conversion efficiency in a dye-sensitized solar cell. There are challenges natural dyes encounter, especially with quick degradation of the dye molecules. This work considered mineral dye in comparison with plant dye to address the challenge of degradation of natural plant dyes. The optical properties and functional groups of the two natural dyes were studied in this work. The absorption spectra, the optical band gaps and the absorption coefficients of the dyes were reported and found to be suitable for use as photosensitizers in a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC), as they absorb in the visible region of the electromagnetic radiation. The functional groups were studied by carrying out Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the amine, carbonyl and hydroxyl groups present in both dyes confirmed promising material that can absorb solar radiation in the visible region (around 380-800 nm) and which finds application in fabricating DSSC. The organic compositions in the mineral dye are studied via the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and the results justify the observation from the FTIR spectroscopy. The properties observed, via the characterizations techniques used, confirm materials suitable for use as photosensitizers in fabricating DSSC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dye-sensitized solar cell is one of the generations of solar cells that generate clean energy and needs inexpensive equipment for fabrication.We report the performances of the natural dye based-solar cells compared with synthetic dye-based solar cells. Zinc oxide (ZnO) is synthesized by the green synthesis technique. The structural property of the ZnO film shows good behavior with preferred (101) orientation. The lattice parameters, a and c, calculated from the X-ray diffraction (XRD) peak of (101) are 2.9214 ​Å and 5.3600 ​Å, respectively. The crystallite size, induced strain and dislocation density of the film are 24.58 ​nm, 4.708×10−3 and 1.655×10−3(nm)−2, respectively. The absorption spectra of the dyes were measured using a UV–Vis spectrophotometer, and the dyes showed high average absorption values of 0.2872, 1.6585, and 0.5886 for beetroot, Eosin y, and yombotumtum, respectively. The current-voltage (I–V) measurement of the cells showed that beetroot, yombotumtum and Eosin y dyes based solar cells have power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 0.75%, 1.17%, and 2.65%, respectively. This shows that the black mineral dye that is easily available, and eco-friendly serves as active material in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).

Plant dye is a promising dyestuff to be used in textiles due to its unique environmental compatibility. However, currently there is no effective method for the identification of plant-dyed and chemical-dyed textiles. In this study, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy combined with three kinds of pattern recognition methods, namely soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA), partial least squares (PLS) regression and principal component regression (PCR), were applied to identify cotton fabrics dyed with plant and chemical dyes. A total of 336 plant dye and chemical dye dyed cotton fabrics were prepared and the NIR spectra were collected; 267 samples were used as the calibration set, while the remaining 69 samples were used as the validation set. After pretreatment with the Savitzky–Golay first derivative, the calibration model was constructed. In the SIMCA model, the correct recognition rate values of the calibration and prediction sets were 100% and 98.55%, respectively. The PLS model showed that the number of principal components (PCs) and the correlation coefficient (R 2) were 8 and 0.9978, respectively, and the results of PCR were PC = 10, R 2 = 0.9937. Both methods were satisfactory for the predicted results. The overall results indicated that NIR spectroscopy could be used for rapid and nondestructive identification of plant-dyed cotton fabrics and chemical-dyed cotton fabrics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Objectives] To optimize the pet dog dyeing process of plant hair dye. [ Methods] Three factors affecting dyeing were selected including pH, concentration of dye and dyeing time. The L9(3³) orthogonal design was used to evaluate the hair colorng effect and the absorbance of cleaning solution after hair was dyed. [Results] The optimum pet dog dyeing process of plant hair dye was dye concentration of 50 mg/mL, dye pH of 7.5 and dyeing time of 1 h. [Conclusions] The coloring and fixing effects of the dye and dyeing process are good, which can lay a foundation for the development and utilization of plant dyes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Plant dyes have been in use for coloring and varied purposes since prehistoric times. A red dye found in the roots of plants belonging to genus Morinda is a well recognized coloring ingredient. The dye fraction obtained from the methanolic extract of the roots of Morinda tinctoria was explored for its role in attenuating damages caused by H2O2-induced oxidative stress. The antioxidant potential of the dye fraction was assessed through DPPH radical scavenging, deoxyribose degradation and inhibition of lipid peroxidation in mice liver. It was subsequently screened for its efficiency in extenuating damage incurred to biomembrane (using erythrocytes and their ghost membranes) and macromolecules (pBR322 DNA, lipids and proteins) from exposure to hydrogen peroxide. In addition, the non-toxic nature of the dye was supported by the histological evaluation conducted on the tissue sections from the major organs of Swiss Albino mice as well as effect on Hep3B cell line (human hepatic carcinoma). The LC–MS confirms the dye fraction to be morindone. Our study strongly suggests that morindone present in the root extracts of M. tinctoria, in addition to being a colorant, definitely holds promise in the pharmaceutical industry.
