Immigrant settlement success hinges on effectively reconstructing social life in the receiving society. With the increased admission of racialized immigrants to Canada, it is imperative to investigate how their sense of sociability and belonging manifests within the broader context of white-dominant Canadian society. This research examines everyday place-based experiences of settlement sociability among racialized immigrants based on the understanding that racial matters are spatial matters. Using the photovoice method, ten racialized recent immigrant men aged 27 to 50, mostly from African and West Asian origins, expressed their settlement experiences through photo-rendering of places of comfort and discomfort. The participants had lived in Canada for less than ten years and immigrated to Canada through the refugee, family, and economic immigration admission categories. Findings indicate that racialized immigrants felt comfortable in “de-racialized” spaces, where they were temporarily relieved from their ethnic visibility and a sense of being out of place. They were uncomfortable in areas that triggered “racialized insecurity,” where they felt vulnerable because of their racialized identity. The analysis further points to the emotional and embodied nature of racial experiences: participants’ uneasy sense of otherness is rooted in their racialized physiques that inhabit a socio-cultural environment where whiteness is the somatic norm. The findings of this research call attention to the need for a closer inspection of how places of immigrant settlement and race are inextricably linked. The promotion of settlement sociability needs to go beyond physical proximity to social closeness, valuing co-ethnicity and cultural familiarity, especially in the initial stage of settlement. SMALL cities , *OFFENSES against property , *BURGLARY , *WEATHER , *CRIME , *POLICE services , *VIOLENT crimes - Abstract
Small study areas are vastly underrepresented in the criminological literature, including the literature on the relationship between crime and weather. North Bay, ON (population 50,000) provides a useful study area in which to begin to address this lack. Using five years of police call for service data (2015–2019), negative binomial regression models were used to assess the relationships between weather variables and assaults, break and enters, domestic disputes, and thefts. For each crime type, the resulting models were compared based on their Aikake information criteria (AICs) to determine which performed the best. Significant relationships were found to differ between crime types. Temperature played a significant role in determining the temporal distribution of thefts, while for break and enters a model without weather variables performed best, even though both are property crimes. Similarly, for violent crimes, assaults were found to be positively correlated to temperature, while domestic disputes depended mainly on day of the week. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the 1990s, small towns in peripheral locations of Germany are losing population and face the task to reconstruct and adapt to an aging population. For the future development of these towns, external factors will only be of little importance. To shape the processes of change, the focus has to be set on identifying and using their own local potential precisely. The identification of specific conditions for action and potentials of small towns in peripheral locations were the main goals of the research programme. It focused on scenario-based processes with the goal of a future vision. The scenario processes in 8 pilot projects have shown that intense participation of citizens and the use of creative techniques are major factors to open up new ideas. The results display how local people imagine the future of “their” small town. They are visions and potentials resulting from their own possibilities, take general developments into account and can be transferred to other small towns. 7 fields of action and factors of success can be summarised, Depuis les années 1990, les petites villes allemandes de zones périphériques voient diminuer leur population.

Facing a double commercial modernization process and geographical reorganization (metropolization and functional mutations), small towns are experiencing significant disruptions with their retail activities. Taking the example of east-central France, the purpose of this article is to see how small towns are able or not to adapt to the changes of retail trade and to maintain centrality as hubs for the surrounding territories. We will see that despite some dynamics common to all small cities, the diversity of cases reflects an increase in the territorial divide in France.

The objective of this article is to focus on the small towns and their role in the urbanisation process and this through the prism of sustainability. This term covers two acceptances: a temporal continuity and a reference to sustainable development as understood by the Bruntdland Report. This article is founded on the hypothesis that small towns can play a role in an integrated approach to urbanisation (without a phenomenon of urban macrocephaly but with a balanced distribution of the population and jobs). Moreover, we believe that the PETR (urban space and rural space brought together) are the adequate scale to ensure economic, social and sustainable cohesion. To illustrate our remarks, we will base on the situation in the southern Massif central, an example of French interstitial spaces.

In the last eight years there is an increasing process of establishment of new Universities in small and medium-sized Brazilian cities by the Federal Government. The objectives of this public policy are connected with the decentralization of high education (mainly available at the Brazilian biggest cities) and the promotion of urban and regional economic development in these places. It is important to mention that in Brazil there are no differences between towns and cities and for a small city is considered a place with less than 50,000 inhabitants, but this is just an empty number when we consider the regional diversity of the Brazilian's urban network and there are several debates about the 'real' concept of small cities in Brazil, as well as in other parts of the world. Nevertheless, as a geographer, my main research objective, going further the concept of a small cities, is to analyze the spatial, economic and cultural influences of the establishment of public Universities in these spaces, with a stressed focus in the everyday life changes. The Universities are carrying aspects of the contemporary urban life (spatial, economic and culturally speaking) to cities where the rural aspects are still fairly present. These small cities are an open arena where the rurality and urbanity clash. Moving to the empirical level, I bring as a case study, the new born Federal University of Reconcavo da Bahia (UFRB) and the city of Cachoeira, with approximately 16387 inhabitants (the municipality has more 15639 inhabitants), where the Campus of the UFRB was implemented in 2006. This is the predominant public project in the city and the one with the biggest impact in the everyday life and urban morphology because the influx of a new profile of 'outsiders' inhabitants - professors, technical and administrative officers and students., Petite ville et nouvelle université.

ISBN 978-0-470-67503-8; All over Europe, city-regions are trying to adapt their profiles to create a better fit for the "new economy". They tend to promote urban renewal, develop new infrastructures and foster agglomeration economies based on new economic sectors. To a great extent, these efforts are made in order to attrack talents and creative companies to the city-region throught physical transformation and active city branding. Although, the efforts of large metropolises like London or Paris, strong metropolitan regions like Amsterdam or Barcelona are well-known, smaller city-regions are promoting the same policies and approaches to economic development. Is the development of creative and knowledge-intensive sectors easier in larger cities than in smaller ones?

We examine, as a way to measure creativity, the research activities in small and medium-sized French cities. We attempt to evaluate and map the knowledge production that occurs in these cities by searching for articles published in the Web of Science whose authors indicate professional addresses in such cities. We show that publications are written in these small and medium-sized cities and that their number has increased over the last few years. Moreover, the internationalisation of science exists in these cities. We will also demonstrate that the articles published in these cities are created by a heterogeneous group of entities that includes not only universities but also public research organisations, hospitals and firms. Finally, a complementary objective of the article is to present a methodology that allows researchers to ascertain and explore the geographical aspects of the dataset through the use of special-purpose maps and graphical tools.

The small-sized city is a geographical object difficult to be characterized by researchers and stakeholders, although it is at the centre of contemporary socio-economic and political changes. Small-sized cities are at the heart of management and development stakes which they must take into account in order to benefit from their strategic role in territory planning and spatial structuring, within recent territory recombining at the national as well as European levels (European Spatial Development Perspective - ESDP)., La petite ville est un objet géographique qui se caractérise par la difficulté des chercheurs, comme des acteurs, à cerner sa réalité scientifique alors même qu'elle est au centre d'évolutions socio-économiques et politiques majeures en ce début du vingt-et-unième siècle. Small-sized towns are an interesting case study for the notion of spatial enclosing. They are inserted in urban networks, in dif- ferent ways and they have a key function in polarising both urban and rural territories. At the local scale, they often present ele- ments of proximity which favour social integration. The analysis of two small towns in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal is a good way to underline the role of both private and public actors in the evolution of enclosing situations, in a broad context of administrative and managing redefinition, in the post-apartheid area. What can be the place of this urban scale in the newly created territories ?
