Historic fabric are increasingly at risk because they disregard the sense of place in urban regeneration projects, which jeopardises regional identities and customs. This study explores the processes underlying the creation of place meanings among users in historic urban bazaars, examining the attributes of lived space that contribute to the development of a sense of place and generate meaning through behavioural practices. Using the lived space of spatial triad theory as a theoretical framework, this research employs a hybrid methodological approach that combines phenomenological and grounded theory methods. Data are collected through semistructured interviews, onsite observations, and questionnaires, with analysis conducted via N-Vivo. By employing the lived space of spatial triad theory, this research offers a nuanced perspective on how historic urban bazaars function as living museums that foster pluralistic societies, cultural innovation, and economic fluidity within a contemplative environment. These insights underscore the importance of incorporating local memories and feelings into heritage conservation and urban regeneration projects, as these elements are crucial for maintaining the unique identity and vibrancy of historic sites. Urban anthropology is a discipline that emerged only with great difficulty. Its origin in the Chicago school of sociology made the discipline dependent upon urban sociology. The ethnographic focus of the Chicago school was short-lived, overtaken by a statistical, quantitative sociology that came to long dominate the field. For their part, anthropologists were late in dealing with cities, arriving only in the 1960s. Since then, they have vacillated between doing anthropology in the city and doing urban anthropology. Given this problem, the urban philosopher Henri Lefebvre may provide us with some fresh insights. In this article, I propose an anthropological rereading of some Lefebvrian concepts, such as "lived space" and "everyday life," emphasizing their socially transformative character. I offer a series of epistemological reflections relevant to our discipline and, by drawing on examples from my ethnographic research, seek to contribute to the methodological formulation of a critical perspective on urban ethnography. Everyday landscapes, including peri-urban areas, play a pivotal role in shaping our physical and mental environments. Nevertheless, spatial planning often falls short of integrating contemporary everyday life and lived space. This paper advocates for an expanded approach beyond traditional planning methods, exploring the potential of artistic representations like drawings, photographs, and films to capture the nuances of peri-urban landscapes. Based on a selection of contemporary artistic works in the fields of drawing, photography, and cinema, this paper explores, through an analysis of specific projects and interviews with the artists, the potentials and constraints of these types of representations. This analysis of selected works reveals that these mediums embody a rich and complex collective journey, showcasing the profound connection between the artist and the environment. Structured around the key stages of analysis, documentation, and communication, the discussion elucidates the interrelated nature of these phases within a broader creative process. It underscores the significance of recognizing these artistic representations as integral components in planning processes, emphasizing their potential to provide unique insights into the complexities of peri-urban landscapes. This article aims to reconstruct the sensory space in which craft activities took place in the Quartier Mu at Malia, an urban district dating to the beginning of the 2nd millennium BC in Crete. The study focuses on two areas: Room VIII 5* of the Potter’s workshop and the North Area, where pottery manufacturing, stone roughing out, drilling, and polishing were carried out. The goal of the research is to address sensory questions, including the sounds surrounding and generated by these activities and the light ambiances in which they were performed, at several moments throughout the day and at dusk. To achieve this goal, the activities were experimentally reproduced and the sounds they emitted were recorded. The light ambiances produced were reconstructed using replicas of lamps found in Room VIII 5*. 3D models of the spaces were designed and short, animated videos focusing on the gestures of artisans and the captured sensory ambiances were generated. The study provides valuable insights into the sensory ambiances of a Bronze Age town, showing craft activities taking place until dusk and sounds generated by stone working that contributed to the rhythm of daily life.

In this article, I approach the Danish digitalization strategy as a Lefebvrian conceived space, focusing on how its ideology and spatial codes denote a normative vision for how citizens should and ought to be. Drawing on the non-media-centric concept of geomediatization and a feminist new materialist approach to gentrification as assemblage, the article explores the lived spaces of older (64+) marginalized citizens living in Sydhavnen, Copenhagen, an area currently undergoing gentrification. By focusing on the interplay between digitalization of the public sector and urban gentrification, the article sheds light on an emergent power geometry in which the potential for belonging is carved out differently for different citizens. In doing so, the article critically explores the more-than-representational geography of the digitalization strategy and contributes to the budding field of geomediatization studies. Research concerning employees' informal interactions in organizational life has shown many positive impacts for the company and the employees. However, there is reduced research concerning how a place for informal interactions emerges within organizations. To fulfill this objective, we relied on Lefebvre's [1991 [1974]. The Production of Space. Oxford: Blackwell] philosophical approach and undertook a longitudinal single case study within the headquarters of a large bank. Despite all the managerial efforts to conceive and promote a space dedicated to informal interactions, another space that did not have any function in the original architectural project, emerged as a lived space in the sense of Lefebvre. From our study, we highlight two contributions. First, we show how a lived space emerges within an organization, through a mix of social practice, of everyday life rhythms, and of shared symbols. Encounters with interior spaces are influenced by past experiences and state of mind. Much of how architecture is experienced therefore is not readily apparent and is sensed rather than seen. Psyche impacts this experience of lived space, from an individual’s awareness of themselves within it, to the perception of space itself. Film offers a distinctive representation of this subjective experience through its narrative form and command of visual, audio and temporal language. The emotive and visceral power of film render it an accessible and immersive medium, and as such make it uniquely placed to communicate less tangible qualities of space and character. This paper analyses the use of interior space in the film Joker (Todd Phillips, 2019). The acutely intimate discernment of the protagonist’s interior environment is the result of environmental and psychological disruption, where boundaries break down between the real and imaginary, and the surreal intrudes upon the tangible depiction of the interior. The exposition of the character’s damaged psyche within space is analysed at key points within the narrative, using collage as an exploratory, visual methodology to analyse and experiment with, to potentially reveal the less perceivable, yet invasive intangible layers of lived space. This article addresses the frequent oversight of psychological qualities of the interior in architectural discourse, through an analytical and experimental method rendering the psychological content of space visible. Defining this intangible nature of architecture as the psychosphere (or the psychological atmosphere), I term this technique the ‘psychospheric collage method’. The process consists of interrogating expressive film language and content through an architectural lens documented through sketching, storyboarding and textual enquiry. From these fragmented components I compose a new visual language capable of signifying the layered psychological atmosphere in which a character resides, thus facilitating its consideration within architectural design and enabling articulation of our intimate encounter with the interior.

This article explores the co-constitutive practice and conceptualisation of place in political parties at opposite ends of the ideological spectrum. Illustrated with examples from the Islamist Hizb ut-Tahrir in Denmark (DK) and the Netherlands (NL) and the far right Party for Freedom (NL) and the Danish People's Party (DK), we seek to better understand the role of place and space in the translation of ideology to practice. With the concept of lived space central to our argument, we propose that 'ideal places' – be they Caliphates or ethnically and religiously homogeneous nation-states – are precisely co-constitutive in that one party's utopia is the other's dystopia. However, pointing to the essence of co-constitutive opposing ideals does not suffice when addressing members, recruits, voters, or wider audiences; ideals must be realised, enacted or performed in order to move, drive and inspire people. Thus, we ask, how do political parties turn ideals into something tangible and practicable? Our argument is that a better understanding of the role of place through the concept of lived space helps explain the apparent success of ideologically driven non-conformist parties in Western Europe. The main goal of this paper is to analyze how "space happens to us" in the "unstable equilibrium" between the need to assert for oneself and the necessity to belong to a surrounding world. We will argue that when such an equilibrium is disturbed, "space can become violent." We will take a phenomenological approach in our work, trying to intertwin E. Minkowski and M. Using phenomenological and ecological psychology as a base, the author develops the concept of lived space as the totality of an individual's spatial and social relationships, including his ”horizon of possibilities”. The lived space may also be regarded as the individual's ecological niche, which is continuously shaped by his exchange with the environment. Mental illness may then be conceived as a limitation or deformation of the patient's lived space, inhibiting his responsivity and exchange with the environment. Unconscious dysfunctional patterns of feeling and behaving act as "blind spots" or "curvatures" in lived space and lead to typical distortions, thereby further restricting the patient's potentialities and development. Accordingly, the task of psychotherapy is to explore and understand the patient's lived space in order to reopen his horizon of possibilities. The main agent for this purpose is the interactive field of psychotherapy, which may be regarded as a "fusion of horizons" of the patient's and the therapist's worlds.

IntroductionThe present study aim was to rethink the geographical reasoning of everyday life toward a new understanding of knowing how to think about space through an interdisciplinary approach, architecture-psychology. This allowed establishing logical relations in spatial and socio-spatial distributions and uses of social phenomena, typical of Santa Catarina Lachatao, an indigenous Mexican community in Sierra Norte Zapoteca.MethodsBased on ethnographic qualitative interdisciplinary research methods along with a total of three visits lasting 15 weeks, the daily experience of people and their community in different times and spaces, experiences, perspectives, and prejudices, were studied. The geographical approach (cartographies) reflects the social construction of the spatial components as the basic understanding of the territory from everyday life. In this study we worked on indigenous citizenship and its territory, analyzing, and contrasting social phenomena such as power-subjection, wealth-poverty, and exclusion-inclusion that transversally allow us to reflect and understand some of the characteristics of diversity and territoriality of the indigenous communities in Mexico.ResultsCharacteristics that predominating in indigenous communities was recognized and featured. This was observed in the social production of their public space which evidence intergenerational pride and sense of community and belonging and their commitment to preserve their life project sustaining their space, community, and traditions. The natural rural context emerges from the interplay between the natural landscape and the built environment (in constant expansion). The bodies of water are respected and protected by the community and the original crossings are still preserved as precious resources, just as any other natural element. The article aims to contribute to the debate on corporeity education, focusing on the question of subjectivity, understood as mind-body unity, as developed by phenomenology and embodied approaches. This allows to rethink the educational settings in which the living body is embraced. Within a cross-curriculum design, particularly in primary school, it offers an overview of possible devices in which corporeity is pivotal. Through conceptual frameworks such as those of space and time, the article underlines the innovative contribution of OE and outdoor education, suggesting possible directions for teacher training.

Departing from Lefebvre's work on the social production of space, this paper explores the intersection between perceived and lived space from the perspective of spatial discourse analysis. Empirically, the paper studies how the spatiality of international airports performs affective discursive work and establishes prerequisites for air travelers' feelings of being "in control" and "excited" vs. feelings of being "controlled" and "surveilled". The concept of binding is applied in order to understand how affect is spatially afforded at Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Vienna International Airport. The analysis reveals that alternations between bound and unbound spaces construe the airports as distinctly ideological sites with different affective potentials. Accordingly, this article adds to the understanding of how airport atmospheres are construed by means of spatial resources such as the height, depth, and shape of walls and ceilings and by the transparency and opaqueness of the built material, as well as by more dynamic elements such as carpets, colors, signage, and retractable belt barriers. The general tendency of most socio-spatial research is to separate the theory of lived space from everyday realities. On the contrary, this article aims to connect urban design and everyday life sociology. It follows a spatial ethnography method with data collected during two-year fieldwork in Yüksel Street, a central public space in Ankara, Turkey. As such, the article contains three lines of discussion: locality, everyday life and spatiality. Locality identifies Turkish cities in a fashion that renders vague the formal/informal and the South/North divides. Everyday life refers to the social activities and their physical imprints. Spatiality helps identify these local spatial characteristics as emergent design values by users. Ad hoc urbanism—activities performed in public space that fall outside of the officially sanctioned uses of that space—is usually met with regulations that attempt to control or criminalize the offending actions, which de Certeau (1984) has called “‘waste products’ of a functionalist administration” (p. 94). But unsanctioned improvisatory use patterns can convey information about what people require of their public places. Instead of dismissing these uses as undesirable and erasing them from public view, landscape architects can instead reframe them as justifications for expanding or altering programs to create public spaces that provide commons to a diverse citizenry for the purposes of living, regenerating community, and asserting civic rights and responsibilities. Using news stories, case studies, and field observations, this article investigates examples of ad hoc urbanism to explore how landscape architects might accommodate their embedded meanings and expand the functionality and fairness of urban design. In cognitive science, it is unclear what precisely presence (both in the sense of objecthood and immersion) refers to in lived experience. The present study addresses the research question of what the relationship between presence is and lived space. A hundred and seventeen phenomenological interviews were conducted with 14 participants. We sampled their experience in a transdiagnostic manner. That is, we observed how the experience of presence changes both in circumstances appraised as positive (e.g., sexual intimacy) and negative (e.g., psychopathology). Our grounded theory suggests that presence is a phenomenon that is comprised of all available sensory knowledge, however, it itself is not present in any one sensory modality. Presence takes the form of a disembodied sense of solidity. Our findings can be related to the notion of transmodality in contemporary qualitative phenomenology (i.e., the idea that there are some aspects of experience that can be readily translated from one sensory modality to another. Further, how presence (in its capacity as immersion) is related to lived space can shed further light on the formation of delusions, suggesting that it is based on sensory alterations rather than changes in belief. Finally, the observation that presence as it appears in lived space need not perfectly correspond to the objective situation, can elucidate extant discussion on whether presence is an amodal aspect of consciousness. Most articles and theories about borderline personality disorder (BPD), either in the psychoanalytical field or the cognitivist one, explicitly or implicitly inscribe themselves in a topographical framework that either carry a fundamental representational a priori or give prominence to causal explanations. Less is written about the phenomenological everyday life-world of borderline people. This article aims to contribute to the description of such a world. Drawing upon clinical sequences that give prominence to the first-person perspective, we will analyse the experience of some typical "symptoms" of BPD in a phenomenological and topological way. We will be led to conclude that the borderline stimmung seems to display the following characteristics: a pervading immediacy of lived experience, a territorialization that tends towards ubiquity, a certain difficulty to deal with the unity and difference poles, a quite horizontal concern with ecstasy and elation, and a waning of reflexivity in the lived space. Contemporary urban design practices and new build redevelopment projects are strongly influenced by economic, social and cultural practices, as well as by new forms of management. These different parameters play on the quality production of open spaces. Investigating the place study of Donau City, a mixed-use neighbourhood located in Vienna (Austria), we look at the relations between the new build environment and the daily users. We aim at analysing the intrinsic qualities of this specific urban environment by understanding how residents and users perceive and decode it (emic perspective) and how they make sense of everyday practiced and lived space. In order to do so, we followed a citizen science approach, using photovoice interview with thirteen residents and workers. Commenting the photographs they took on a one-day walk, the users revealed their daily life of their surrounding through design and planning elements associated with personal stories. We analyzed the corpus via inductive coding which helped us conceptualize the users' lived space (Lefebvre, 2000), perceptions and interactions. Discussing the results, we contribute to a deeper understanding of the role forms, functions and scales play on open spaces' quality in new build redevelopment projects by bringing in a bottom-up and sensitive approach. The premeditated decisions of urban plans and designs are in a continuous transformation due to the everyday expectancies and needs of users. People mostly intervene in their built environment in differing scales and temporalities which simultaneously transform a designed space and making it closer to a lived space. Therefore, the emergent user spaces and social practices that occur throughout the everyday life dynamics beyond the expectations of an urban plan are significant to develop a human-centered viewpoint for urban planning and design studies. This study aims at unfolding the theoretical and empirical dimensions of the usually overlooked everyday space and practices which are mostly categorized as ordinary or temporary. In this context, a field study in Yüksel Street has been undertaken to to frame the theoretical discussion on the social and spatial production of urban space and everyday life from an urbanism perspective. The site is a vibrant urban space located in the city center of Ankara that is called Kızılay. Yüksel is a well-connected street to the public transportation stops and has a diverse land use. Since it was laid out following the urban plans in the early years of Republic, the street has been facing social, economic and physical alterations bringing dialectics of designed and lived space together. Despite the initial street pattern maintains today in morphological sense, the altering faces of everyday life and its temporal, spatial and societal impact result in a multi-layered urban entity. This study proposes a theoretical approach which is beyond the dualities and conflicts between physical or social space and temporary or permanent urban rhythms to understand the poiesis of everyday life and space. In this context, there are two channels of study. The first one is using both the archival data on the urban infrastructure of memory (the memory of the past), then the second is to unveil the poiesis of everyday life and space through a field research on Yüksel Street that would make the fluid archive of the ordinary practices and aesthetics (memory enacted in the present). The corresponding research methods on the ethnographic and spatial-visual analysis strengthen the unbreakable bond between social and spatial. The outcomes of the study present the role of the everyday user and the changing urban rhythms on the production of space. This connecting approach explores and presents the spatial qualities of public life practices which are usually labeled as left-over spaces and taken for granted for being evasive or temporary. The dialectic of social life and urban design is essential to grasp user preferences and expectancies from their contribute to the humanoriented urbanism studies.

• LUDs risk resulting in residents struggling to develop place identity/attachment. • Discourses associated with entrepreneurial urbanism can result in image-reality gaps. • Ørestad, Copenhagen failed to become the cosmopolitan metropole it was intended to. • Image-reality gaps resulted in experiences of transition and opposition in Ørestad. This paper explores the lived space of entrepreneurial urbanism in Ørestad, a 1990s mega-project still under development on the edge of Copenhagen. Drawing upon in-depth interviews, interactive map-making and critical discourse analysis, it shows that imaginaries of urban competition, place branding and cosmopolitanism have only superficially been internalized by residents as part of their lived space in Ørestad, even revealing contradictory everyday practices and experiences. Rather than the cosmopolitan metropole and connected city space it was conceived to become, the district is experienced as a disconnected housing satellite without much street life, as a stepping stone to something better by reducing home to exchange value, and as an area with a community based in opposition. A sense of place identity and place attachment does exist for many Ørestaders but it is born out of 'do-it-yourself mentality' and reaction to a sense of ephemerality. The lived space of entrepreneurial urbanism in Ørestad can only partly be understood by what the district is, but much more by what it is not – i.e. by what it lacks from the perspective of its residents. In recent decades, the island of Lesvos (North Aegean, Greece) has become a stepping stone on migrants' routes to Europe, attracting volunteer tourism aimed at providing support to migrants. Using the theoretical framework of Lefebvre's triad, we investigate Lesvos as a lived space for volunteer tourists, the representations of the island space they carry and their spatial practices not only as volunteers but also as tourists. The choice of where to go to volunteer depends upon wider geopolitical context, and volunteers' destinations (e.g. reception centres) are, stricto sensu, their working spaces. Nevertheless, during their free time, volunteers leave these spaces; specifically, we investigate this dimension of their experience. Through a survey, interviews and participant observation, we illustrate how volunteer tourists imbue the space of Lesvos with symbolic meanings, thus confirming their role in the humanitarian borderscape of the island; we further examine the ways in which they challenge the preconceived imaginaries of the island. Concurrently, we show how in specific places in the island's capital Mytilene, the lived experience of volunteers creates deep connections between volunteers, migrants and locals, to the point that some spaces are co-produced or deeply transformed by the presence and practices of volunteers. Purpose: This is a study on a sport-based intervention, with a focus on physical activity, social relations, and learning, to promote health and well-being in the workplace lived space. Lived space is situated and associated with social and cultural conventions which affect the quality of the perceived space at work. The aim of the paper is to elucidate the participant’s experiences of the intervention and how health and well-being were affected. Methods: The intervention was conducted with employees from the warehouse of a company within the retail sector. The design consisted of one initial workshop as a baseline, a sport-based intervention, three group interviews, and a final workshop. A hermeneutic phenomenological analysis focused on experiences of the intervention and the meaning of the workplace as the lived space. Results: Three themes emerged in the analysis; Expressing positive individual effects, Expressing improved work environment and The meaning of the workplace as lived space. The themes are discussed in relation to three basic health foci: physical activity, social relations and learning. Conclusion: The workplace as a lived space offers a valuable opportunity for sport-based interventions that improve health and well-being through physical activity, social relations, and learning.

The Norwegian welfare system due to human rights is in charge of providing necessary support of life to every citizen in terms of a safe place to live, the opportunity to education or employment and meaningful life accomplishments. We explore how public sustenance is experienced by a group of young receivers of public support. The article is one of three substudies drawing on empirical material from in-depth interviews with 14 young adults with mental health challenges and experiences from being partly or fully out of school or work. The interviews reveal that in particular three aspects of support are significant to the young. These are personal and shared space (e.g., supportive personal and professional relationships), the opportunity of a safe home, and the prospect of not being trapped for a lengthy time in their problems (an effective ‘standstill’ or suspension of agency of life), but be part of the “world out there.” Could public support provide some temporary or permanent help with regard to these basic aspects of life? We explore in this article the potential interrelatedness between space and support in a hermeneutic phenomenological manner with basis in experiences from four of the young in the study. David, Mia, Oda and Simon (all pseudonyms) each in their way, describe moments where support and space seem to be existentially and experientially interconnected. We wonder if analysis of the two phenomena can inform our understanding of the qualities that characterize what we might call a ‘supportive’ environment within public welfare.

This paper demonstrates the value of considering the lived experiences of abstract space makers as a way of exploring the micro-social and cultural dynamics buttressing capitalism's domination over space. In-depth interviews with real estate professionals working in a gentrifying neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, reveal how they view real estate as a realm of refuge and opportunity, view their work as a type of service to others and how some reconcile their sympathetic observations of renters facing hardships. I also describe how their discourse demonstrates the power of orthodox economic concepts to mask how the real estate market works as a mechanism for the inequitable distribution of social resources. Studying real estate professionals' lived space and discourse thus reveals some of the ways that capitalist spatial processes are reproduced as inevitable, acceptable and even needed aspects of urban life. Based on an ethnographic account of a transitory space of an aircraft under lockdown, this article reflects on quarantine as the product of expert technocratic knowledge, which blurs fine-grained social moments and relationships to create a homogenous functional space. It argues that space under lockdown is a form of a functional alienated space produced and conditioned by non-transparent management mechanisms that are legitimized by seemingly routinized protocols and abstract representations. While this argument is not optimistic as regards capacity building for political or social change, it identifies current spatial configurations as a unique opportunity for experiencing how representations of space prevail over (struggles in) everyday life. This essay considers the ways in which German Jews negotiated the new experiences of time and space during their vacations in the Third Reich. We argue that their reflections on vacations facilitated a rich discourse on the essence of Jewish bourgeois identity at a time of fundamental transitions. Our analysis utilizes three types of sources that encompass a variety of perspectives and sensibilities: personal diaries of Jewish vacationers, photo albums of Jewish families on vacations, and writings on vacations in Jewish newspapers. Following insights from the sociology of time, the article examines how reflections on vacations participated in the formation of the Jewish "lived time" under Nazism. Within this framework, our analysis indicates the dual function of vacation: as a realm of (bourgeois) normality, which underscores continuity, on the one hand; and, on the other hand, as a break with the normal flow of time, an ephemeral shelter from the experience of crisis. Consequently, the essay illuminates the roles that vacations played in the transformation of the spatial identity of German Jews. The steadily narrowing choice of vacation resorts accessible to them instigated various reactions among German Jews. In their reflections on the places of vacations, some conceived taking a vacation as an act of defiance, underscoring continuity in middle-class experiences, whereas others depicted the new spatial experiences as an opportunity to rethink Jewish identity. This paper conceptualizes affective urbanism as both research framework and praxis, engaging professionals and concerned publics alike in the insurgent making of cities. With its focus on affect and bodily encounters, it taps into the rich knowledge of practices of improvising and inventing in everyday life, which tend to fall outside the realm of discursive and visual representations. An analysis of spatial practices of the collective Plataforma de Afectados Por La Hipoteca in Barcelona illustrates how a mobilization of affects fosters not only individual, but first and foremost a collective capacity to negotiate belonging, appropriate space and contest alienated conditions of everyday life. The argument rests on the hypothesis that affect implicates the ethical engagement with people at places of everyday life, thus producing a medium and means for transgressing socio-spatial divides and challenging practices of exclusion, othering and dispossession. The value of this kind of work does not necessarily lie in the quality of conceived or materialized design, but rather in enacting an inclusive and empathic design praxis which connects to people's multiple lived spaces and cultivates lived space of deep and caring social relations. I consider to what extent, if at all, rights – or to take it wider, law – can contribute or even respond to what is referred to as the ‘current crisis’ in higher education. To what extent does rights discourse still enable radical political claims that could engage with the complexity of the moment and support a politics of resistance? I recall arguments on the limits of law, in particular the inability of law to be self-reflexive, and also some critical responses to rights as such. Could these critical responses disclose possibilities for a radically different conception of right, of a ‘Right’ – particularly the Right to the university – that emerges from a place of anxiety, disruption and ‘unselfing’ rather than preservation? What could be at stake in thinking about a ‘Right’ to the university against the background of the notion of the Right to the city? The potential relevance of the Right to the city, linked to the notion of ‘inhabitance’, is that it challenges the modern, technical and functional notion of ‘habitat’. Habitat is devoid of any notion of politics, most pertinently political resistance. A contemplation of a Right to the university will have to have at its core the notion of ‘inhabitance’ that will resonate with Lefebvre’s notion of “lived space”.

Purpose: This is a study on a sport-based intervention, with a focus on physical activity, social relations, and learning, to promote health and well-being in the workplace lived space. Lived space is situated and associated with social and cultural conventions which affect the quality of the perceived space at work. The aim of the paper is to elucidate the participant's experiences of the intervention and how health and well-being were affected. Methods: The intervention was conducted with employees from the warehouse of a company within the retail sector. The design consisted of one initial workshop as a baseline, a sport-based intervention, three group interviews, and a final workshop. A hermeneutic phenomenological analysis focused on experiences of the intervention and the meaning of the workplace as the lived space. Results: Three themes emerged in the analysis; Expressing positive individual effects, Expressing improved work environment and The meaning of the workplace as lived space. The themes are discussed in relation to three basic health foci: physical activity, social relations and learning. Conclusion: The workplace as a lived space offers a valuable opportunity for sport-based interventions that improve health and well-being through physical activity, social relations, and learning. The medieval English escheator was a royal official who seized the goods and chattels of felons, fugitives and outlaws for the crown's benefit. This article uses escheators' inquests and accounts to ask what information exists about the location of forfeited possessions at the point of their appraisal by the escheator, and what is revealed about the use of space in the houses and outbuildings of lower status people? We also ask more general questions about contemporary understanding of the relationship between domestic objects and space. We find that there was limited interest in describing possessions according to their position within buildings. Nonetheless, one may use the order of items as they are recorded in the escheators' lists of forfeited goods to explore the issues raised in the article. The records reveal an emphasis on the difference between 'household utensils' and other movables, especially crops and livestock. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The loss of all original furnishings or decoration and the relentless refashioning of interiors have eroded our ability to appreciate how extant houses functioned as living spaces in the later Middle Ages. This paper uses a variety of documentary sources, notably York's rich collection of probate inventories, to provide evidence on the division and furnishing of buildings. Depositions from cases within the ecclesiastical court of York ask questions about the way that particular artisanal and mercantile houses functioned both as residences and as places of work. Taking the author's 2008 study in Medieval Domesticity a step further, the paper will consider in more depth the notion that a distinctive bourgeois ideology of domesticity, which was projected through material culture, grew up in the later medieval city. The urban renewal process in neighbourhoods with well-rooted communities often reveals the ties between people and spaces, and highlights the inextricable links between social and physical structures. The residents of three neighbourhoods in the city of Barcelona-Trinitat Nova, Plus Ultra and Vallcarca- have endured and fought against the threat of radical urban renewals planned by the municipal authorities for decades, and their efforts have only recently been rewarded with the acceptance of their demands by local administrations. In this period, residents organized themselves to defend their vision of the place against official plans, a vision which was a collective construction of personal memories and historical evidences. In the PROHABIT research project, we have undertaken an interdisciplinary study, involving architects-planners and social and environmental psychologists, to understand the process of construction of a sense of community and place identity in three neighbourhoods. The study has highlighted the need to overcome the divisions between social sciences and design disciplines, between the real world of experience and the abstract world of design thinking. In this regard, the work conducted in this project offers some insights into the need to create a holistic understanding of today's urban environment, and how architects and planners need to develop skills and methods to enable them to form part of the open and participatory planning systems which our contemporary urban environments demand. Nostalgia as geographical category: A theoretical proposal In the scholarly literature, "nostalgia" has been criticized for its supposed capacity to falsify historical narratives, to idealize a past, and to hide the social divisions and power relations existing in memory and the revaluation of heritage. Taking the opposite of these analyzes, this paper addresses and questions nostalgia not only as an individual and collective feeling, but also as a discourse and a socio‐cultural practice embodied in space and the present. Based on a review of literature, this paper proposes theoretical reflections in order to construct nostalgia as a category of analysis capable of interrogating the affective relationship of human beings to space, the people's subjective relation to time and to materiality, and the way in which the practices and discourses participate in the production of the space. The paper is an invitation to take part in debates about the geographical dimensions of nostalgia. Architectural space is directly related to the lives of individuals and is experienced by them. This experience can give meaning to the body and lived space for the person who is experiencing it. Many studies have focused on lived space in architecture; however, their statements primarily address theoretical, rather than practical, frameworks. In addition, these researchers often describe lived space from their own perspectives, although it is a tangible space that each person must experience directly. Thus, the current study seeks to identify the different levels of lived space. The objective of this research is to identify the dimensions of lived space by examining how different people perceive it. In this regard, the subject was given as an assignment to twenty-four undergraduate students in their final semester of study ("Architecture Design 5"). They were asked to describe the most important lived space that they have personally experienced at the scale of architecture and state the factors that makes this space alive for them. The student descriptions were then subjected to qualitative content analysis. The results indicated that lived space has cultural roots and is a continuum of five levels: meaning and concept, spatial elements, formal and spatial structure, livability (presence of people in the form of family and social groups), and functional levels. Outdoor education means increasing the opportunity to encounter and experiment with nature, but above all, it means rethinking one's own relationship with nature. Professionals working in the field of education cannot transmit to children what they do not know or share. Therefore, to foster education in nature with pedagogical skill, it is important for each practitioner to become aware of their own way of thinking and be willing to undergo an authentic noological revolution (Bateson, 1976), reviewing their own relationship with the environment in an educational key. Starting from these premises, the participatory research focuses on the role of the early childhood practitioner, the emotions they feel, and the meanings they give to the outdoor spaces of the educational facility they inhabit in on a daily basis and share with the children. Placing the focus on the adult's viewpoint meant investigating their experiences and how these can condition the children's relations with more natural, destructured spaces. The results gathered by two tools, heart maps and lived-experience descriptions reveal difficulties teachers experience in connection with some spaces which are considered challenging and the necessity to support teachers in the reappropriation of those spaces with a view to identifying new perspectives for improvement. In this text I try to show that individuals produce their history, constructing their notions of nature and imprinting on it their mark. I have elected the rivers Maranhão, Passa Três and Ribeirão Machambombo in Uruaçu-GO as representative symbols of the Brazilian rivers that constitute a basic ingredient for city life to happen, but also become stages of environmental problems. As consequence, cities set aside by the rivers reverse and lead them to rivers at the edge of cities. Socio-environmental history presented itself as a possibility for analysis and reflection on the impressions inscribed in this process. However, other categories, conceptual and methodological concerns, were also presented as necessary to gather more consistent and fundamental contributions for this analysis.

In this reflection, we seek to develop some of Professor Gill's inspiring ideas on the notion of (un)welcome further. We do this, in particular, by problematizing his largely dualistic conception of the emotionallyinvested, inter-personal forms of welcome contra a bureaucratic tendency to abstract welcome, to hollow it out emotionally. We argue that if applied too rigidly, this dichotomy can be unwieldy for making sense of the actual socio-spatial and emotional dynamics of (un)welcome. To elaborate this criticism, we expand on the notion of welcome from three interrelated perspectives. First, we argue that besides the opposite poles of people who welcome refugees, and forces that attempt to exclude them, great many actors convey more ambiguous and contextually varying attitudes to (un)welcoming immigrants. In the light of Lefebvre's conceptual triad of social space, we next point out that Gill's conceptualization pays inadequate heed to the practiced and societally recompensing aspects of everyday spatiality and welcoming. Finally, we take a cue from Gill's suggestion to analyze welcome from the emotional geographies perspective, and reflect on exclusionary and inclusionary socio-spatial processes related to refugees' emotions (lived space) and coping tactics (practiced space). The Norwegian welfare system due to human rights is in charge of providing necessary support of life to every citizen in terms of a safe place to live, the opportunity to education or employment and meaningful life accomplishments. We explore how public sustenance is experienced by a group of young receivers of public support. The article is one of three substudies drawing on empirical material from in-depth interviews with 14 young adults with mental health challenges and experiences from being partly or fully out of school or work. The interviews reveal that in particular three aspects of support are significant to the young. These are personal and shared space (e.g., supportive personal and professional relationships), the opportunity of a safe home, and the prospect of not being trapped for a lengthy time in their problems (an effective 'standstill' or suspension of agency of life), but be part of the "world out there." Could public support provide some temporary or permanent help with regard to these basic aspects of life?
