In computerized tomography (CT-Scan), iodine solution was used as a contrast medium to improve imaging. But the iodine solution has different side effects for patients. In the present work, one of the gold compounds AuCl4 was used as an alternative contrast agent. The study used rabbits in an in vivo method to examine both the organs of the heart and the kidneys. Hounsfield unit (HU) values from computed tomography of rabbit and kidney angiography findings were found and compared with HU values for iodine contrast medium. Iodine solution is the only contrast medium currently used in the present study, gold tetrachloride (AuCl4) solution has been chosen as an alternative contrast medium in computed tomography scanning (CT-scan). It was found that using AuCl4 solution as an alternative contrast medium in rabbits enhanced the CT-scan imaging in the resolution and increasing the of heart and kidney organs in comparison with the iodine compound without any side effects. Rabbit’s heart and kidney were selected to study the effect of using 1.4 M iodine solution and 0.1 M AuCl4 as an alternative contrast medium in CT-scan. The HU value for the heart has 53 HU when used high concentration of Iodine complex, while the HU value at low concentration of alternative contrast medium of 0.1 M of gold compound has 50.5. The same results were found in the kidney organ. From these results, the resolution of the CT image is good and cleared when an alternative contrast medium (AuCl4) used. We can conclude that the alternate contrast medium for AuCl4 solution has high HU values for both heart and kidney compared to iodine solution.

Background and Aim: Chromoendoscopy with iodine staining is an important diagnostic method for esophageal carcinomas or precancerous lesions. Unfortunately, iodine staining can be associated with numerous adverse events (AEs). We found that the starting position of spraying iodine solution is likely the main reason of causing AEs. We conducted this work to determine whether clinical outcomes from anterograde iodine staining were superior to those achieved after retrograde iodine staining.Methods: A total of 134 subjects with a health risk appraisal flushing (HRA-F) score of >6 for esophageal cancer were randomly assigned to receive anterograde or retrograde iodine staining in the esophagus. The primary endpoints were the pain and the amount of iodine solution consumption. The secondary endpoints were iodine-staining effect, detection yield, and response to starch indicator.Results: Nine patients suffered from pain and six patients revealed positive response to starch indicator in retrograde iodine-staining group; however, no patient reported pain (0/67) and all patients revealed a negative response to starch indicator in anterograde iodine-staining group. The amount of iodine solution consumption in anterograde iodine-staining group (4.97 mL) was significantly lower than that (6.23 mL) in retrograde iodine-staining group; however, the iodine-staining effect and detection yield were comparable between the two groups.Conclusions: Anterograde iodine staining during Lugol chromoendoscopy appears to be as effective, but significantly safer than retrograde iodine staining.

Platinum extraction from spent reforming catalysts in iodine solutions under atmospheric pressure at different temperatures, acid concentration, and iodine spices concentration, catalyst particle size, and impeller agitation speed have been studied in our group. In this system, platinum is oxidized from spent catalyst with I3¯ that is formed from the reaction of I2 and I¯ to produce PtI6-2 as its main product. It is obvious that some of the platinum ions in aqueous solution are precipitated as PtI4, especially at high temperatures. Power-law rate equation was used in extraction and precipitation reactions for kinetic modeling. The effect of temperature was studied using the Arrhenius equation. The activation energy for the platinum surface dissolution reaction was calculated as 53 kJ/mol in extraction reaction which indicated that the rate determining step is surface chemical reaction step. The reaction order was 3.01 for platinum concentration in solid and 0.45 for the hydrogen ion concentration, 0.1 for the iodine spices concentration in extraction reaction and 0.54 for platinum ions concentration in precipitation reaction. This model shows good agreement with experimental data.

Remote communities in developing countries are facing ever-increasing water scarcities, due to cumulative demand induced by the climate change and global warming impacts. For the socio-economic and health well-being of the local communities, sufficient, efficient, and affordable water supply is fundamental from local-based adsorbents. Matamba Fruit shell was obtained and pyrolyzed to obtain well-transformed biochar, which exhibited enough capacity to remove Iodine from aqueous solution. The maximum capacity of adsorption of the Matamba Fruit shell was 2.122 mmol L−1 and 2.12 mmol L−1 from conventional and Bayesian statistics correspondingly. The difference was insignificant. The surface morphology was evaluated by the Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (FESEM-EDX) which revealed porous structures with irregular openings enough to purge wastewater pollutants. The material surface area was 267.0 m2 g−1, as estimated by both approaches, making the Matamba Fruit shell an emerging potential candidate for environmental pollution control and use in bioremediation practices. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed that surface functional groups of Matamba Fruit shell biochar have enough peak variations in intensity and position due to vibration variations of the surface. The Fruit shell has different functional groups including the hydroxyl (-OH) and the carbonyl groups (C O), C C stretches of aromatic rings, and the carboxylate (C–O–O-) groups. The biochar understudy unveiled its capability for wastewater-treatment reuse in local and urban communities of developing countries to safeguard their health and access to water-supply as the climate change reverberations are affecting the developing countries more pronounced than before. Starch is important material in plant tissues, especially for storage tissues. Starches from different plant resources or tissues vary in morphology, content, and physicochemical properties. Starch and iodine can bind specifically to present the shapes and sizes of starch granules in plant tissues. Here, we describe some methods for staining starch in leaf, pollen grain, and starchy seeds with iodine solution. Abstract: Cotton fabric was thermally crosslinked with poly (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) at different conditions including temperature, time, PVP concentrations and molecular weights. Results indicated that treating the cotton fabrics with 4% aqueous solution of PVP of molecular weight 10,000 Dalton followed by drying at 85°C for 5min then curing at 160°C for 3min results in crosslinking as will as an improvement in some performance properties of that fabrics such as resiliency, tensile strength, and acid dyeability. Post-treating PVP crosslinked fabric with 5% iodine in ethanol solution for 5h at 50°C imparts antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Moreover, incorporation of PVP in the easy-care finishing of cotton fabrics, as polymer additive, with N,N-dimethylol 4,5-dihydroxyethylene urea as a crosslinker enhances some of the performance properties of finished fabrics such as the nitrogen content, tensile strength and acid dyeability along with decreasing resiliency as well as whiteness index, whereas the ester crosslinking with citric acid, in presence of PVP, enhances resilience, tensile strength and whiteness indices accompanied with a reduction in the %N of the treated fabrics. Infra red spectrum of PVP crosslinked fabric as well as EDX analysis of loaded iodine on PVP crosslinked cotton fabric were investigated. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Intra-operative incidental contamination of surgical wounds is not rare. Povidone-iodine solution can be used to disinfect surgical wounds. Although povidone-iodine is a good broad-spectrum disinfecting agent, it has occasionally been reported to have a negative effect on wound healing and bone union. Therefore, its safety in a spinal surgery is unclear. A prospective, single-blinded, randomized study was accordingly conducted to evaluate the safety of povidone-iodine solution in spinal surgeries. Ascertained herein was the effect of wound irrigation with diluted povidone-iodine solution on wound healing, infection rate, fusion status and clinical outcome of spinal surgeries. Materials and methods: From January 2002 to August 2003, 244 consecutive cases undergoing primary instrumented lumbosacral posterolateral fusion due to degenerative spinal disorder with segmental instability had been collected and randomly divided into two groups: the study group (120 cases, 212 fusion levels) and the control group (124 cases, 223 fusion levels). Excluded were those patients with a prior spinal surgery, spinal trauma, malignant tumor, infectious spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, metabolic bone disease, skeletal immaturity or with an immunosuppressive treatment. In the former group, wounds were irrigated with 0.35% povidone-iodine solution followed by normal saline solution just before the bone-grafting and instrumentation procedure. However, only with normal saline solution in the latter. All the operations were done by the same surgeon with a standard technique. All the patients were treated in the same postoperative fashion as well. Later on, wound healing, infection rate, spinal bone fusion and clinical outcome were evaluated in both groups. Results: A significant improvement of back and leg pain scores, modified Japanese Orthopedic Association function scores (JOA) and ambulatory capacity have been observed in both groups. One hundred and seven patients in the study group and one hundred and nine in the control group achieved solid union. There was no infection in the study group but six deep infections in the control group. Wound dehiscence was noted in one group 1 and two group 2 patients. A subsequent statistical analysis revealed higher infection rate in the control group ( P<0.05), but no significant difference in fusion rate, wound healing, improvement of pain score, function score and ambulatory capacity between the two groups. Conclusion: Diluted povidone-iodine solution can be used safely in spinal surgeries, and it will not influence wound healing, bone union and clinical outcome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Narikela Lavan is a formulation prepared with a ripe narikela that is coconut and saindhav lavan (Rock salt). For its preparation Mahaputa is given i.e. a temperature of 800-1000°C is reached in this type of puta. Modern chemistry shows that at such temperature activated charcoal is produced. So Narikela Lavan was tested by common test of methyl orange and iodine solution for presence of activated charcoal.
