For a hygiene paper such as tissue and towel, strength, softness, and absorbency are known as attributes that a user is looking for. It is proposed here that purchasing decisions are likely to be influenced by in-use experiences, which may be quite different from the physical properties measured with current standardized tests. There have been continuous efforts on developing physical test methods to replace subjective in-use tests because the benefits of the former are too significant to be overlooked. This paper considered some in-use test methods for paper towel products that can be carried out by panel members quickly in the course of sensory panel testing. In addition, laboratory tests were developed in an attempt to quantify such input. The sensory panel testing showed that (wet) strength and absorbency were the key contributions to the performance of paper towels. Softness did not show any significant contribution to it. Wet strength showed a high correlation with absorbency. The (wet) ball burst strength had the highest correlation with the in-use strength. Although both the tensile strength and the ball burst strength had a high correlation with preference, the ball burst tester is preferred because more reproducible and simpler to operate.

This study analyzed the effect that pulp fibers have on the surface softness component of hygiene paper. The surface softness component has more of an influence on the evaluation of subjective softness results than the bulk softness component. Using the surface softness measurement technique, this study aimed to evaluate the effect that fibers have on the softness of hygiene paper substrate via objective numerical values to measure the surface softness component of hand sheets composed of various pulp species. The results indicate that coarseness effects had the largest effect on softness among the various fiber characteristics, such as average fiber length, width and coarseness. As fiber coarseness increased, a rough surface formed, which resulted in an increase in the mean deviation from the average friction (MMD). Nonwood fibers had long fiber length and low coarseness, which enables the production of hygiene paper with high strength and softness. Chemical additives are used singly or in combination to impart functionality to hygiene paper (suggested). In particular, in the hygiene paper making process, dry strength agent, wet strength agent, softener, and other are widely used. The effects of chemical additives on the softness components were evaluated. In the case of surface softness, there was no change in MMD according to the addition of dry and wet strength agents. The MMD (mean deviation from the average friction of coefficient) was decreased by adding a softener, which is the purpose of its addition to the hygiene paper making process. The softness and wet strength were improved when the wet strength agent was added before the softener. In addition, lotion treatment was applied to the surface of tissue paper. The surface softness component of non-silicone-based lotion was similar or improved, which may overcome the problems of silicon-based lotion.

Guanidinylated chitosan (GCS) was prepared by grafting guanidine oligomers onto chitosan under microwave irradiation. The structure of GCS characterized by FT-IR and 1H NMR verified the covalent bonding between the guanidine oligomers and chitosan; the effects of molar ratio, reaction temperature, and time were investigated and the degree of substitution of GCS reached a maximum of 25.5% under optimized conditions in this work. The resulting GCS showed significantly enhanced antimicrobial activities. The results obtained from the dynamic UV absorption of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed that the deactivation of E. coli by GCS was due to the destructing of the cell membrane and the prompt release of cytoplasm from the bacterial cells. The adsorption of GCS onto cellulose fibers and the antimicrobial efficiency of the hygiene papers with GCS were also investigated. Microwave irradiation as a green assisted method was applied to promote this reaction. This facile approach allowed chitosan to be guanidinylated without tedious preparation procedures and thus broadened its application as a biocompatible antimicrobial agent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
