Cet article étudie les changements menés dans l’armée française entre la fin de la guerre de Sept Ans et la Révolution française, et plus particulièrement l’attention portée par les officiers au rôle central de la culture institutionnelle dans le fonctionnement global de l’armée. Bien qu’aucun de ces officiers ne mentionne le terme « culture » dans ses mémoires de réforme adressés au ministre de la Guerre ou au roi, l’importance qu’ils y accordent au tempérament national tout comme leurs attentes en matière de promotion témoignent, en effet, de l’existence chez eux de préoccupations d’ordre culturel comme de l’influence de la culture sur les militaires français. Il apparaît dès lors pertinent de s’intéresser à cette influence et au rôle de la culture dans les réformes militaires françaises de la seconde moitié du xviiie siècle, cette démarche s’inscrivant au demeurant parfaitement dans le renouveau historiographique actuel qui a vu le croisement des études sur la guerre et des études culturelles, et ce au profit de ces deux champs respectifs.

Si les traits culturels d’une société contribuent à la création d’une « culture de guerre » spécifique dans le domaine militaire, l’armée a, elle aussi, une influence sur la culture plus générale de la société qu’elle sert. Or, sous l’Ancien Régime, l’armée française a favorisé l’interaction et l’amalgame d’un assortiment de groupes divers, distingués par des différences de langue, de religion, de race et/ou d’origine géographique (à défaut de pouvoir parler dans ce contexte d’origines « nationales »). Cet article examine l’histoire de certains de ces groupes – surtout les troupes étrangères et les troupes non catholiques – dans l’armée française avant la Révolution de 1789 pour dévoiler comment le domaine militaire a aidé à introduire dans le royaume une diversité culturelle qui aurait autrement eu peu de manifestation en France à cette époque.

Towns and townsmen played a central role in the monarchy’s reassertion of control over the kingdom in second half of 15th century: not domination of towns by the crown, as Henri Sée once argued, but an entente cordiale between them (as Bernard Chevalier stated). So what of capital of Normandy in that period? The duchy was strategically valuable during the Burgundian and Breton wars, and remained under threat from the English throughout the 15th century. Despite the dire economic conditions of the mid-15th century, it is clear that the monarchy still considered it to be one of the richest provinces in France during the period. Despite Charles VII’s victories, royal control in the Duchy was precarious during the reign of Louis XI. Located in these historiographical contexts and grounded in an analysis of town council minutes and other records, this paper will explore relations between the crown and the Norman towns in the second half of the 15th century. Les bonnes villes et leurs gouvernants ont joué un rôle très important dans la réaffirmation et l’affermissement du pouvoir royal dans le royaume de France dans la seconde moitié du XVe siècle, non pas comme dominés par la couronne, comme le disait Henri Sée, mais comme partenaires dans une « entente cordiale », comme l’a dit plus récemment Bernard Chevalier. Qu’en était-il de la capitale de la Normandie pendant cette période ? Le duché avait une valeur stratégique considérable en raison des guerres bretonnes et bourguignonnes, mais aussi en raison d’une menace anglaise qui restait très présente durant le XVe siècle. Malgré les conditions économiques peu favorables de la première moitié du XVe siècle, le roi considérait la Normandie comme l’une de ses provinces les plus riches. En même temps, les victoires militaires de Charles VII n’ont pas assuré à son fils Louis XI une autorité incontestée. Cette étude de la politique rouennaise et des relations entre cette ville et la monarchie pendant la seconde moitié du XVe siècle traite de certaines de ces questions à partir de plusieurs sources essentielles, notamment les registres de délibérations municipales.

This article concerns documents relating to Normandy under English domination during the 15th-century phase of the Hundred Years’ War which are to be found in the archives and libraries of Saint Petersburg. The documents derive from two principal sources: the Department of Manuscripts of the National Library of Russia (formerly the Bibliothèque Saltikov-Chtchédrine) and the Archives of the Historical Institute of Saint Petersburg. Before coming into the NLR the relevant documents formed part of the collections of P. P. Doubrovsky (1754-1816), Prince A. Y. Lobanov-Rostovsky (1788-1866) and Count P. K. (J. P. van) Suhtelen (1751-1836). The documents in the Archives of the Historical Institute of Saint Petersburg derive from the collection assembled by N. P. Likhatchev (1862-1936). The article ends with a calendar of 17 documents and a full transcript of an act of Henry VI concerning the auditing of accounts of Pierre Surreau, receiver-general of Normandy. Cette contribution est consacrée à la description des documents relatifs à l’histoire de Normandie sous la domination anglaise pendant la guerre de Cent Ans, conservés dans les archives et les bibliothèques de Saint-Pétersbourg. Ceux-ci proviennent de deux sources principales : dépôt des manuscrits de la Bibliothèque nationale de Russie (ancienne Bibliothèque Saltikov-Chtchédrine) et archives de l’Institut d’histoire de Saint-Pétersbourg. Avant d’entrer à la bibliothèque, les documents de la BNR avaient appartenu aux collections de P. P. Doubrovsky (1754-1816), du prince A. Y. Lobanov-Rostovsky (1788-1866) et du comte P. K. (J. P. van) Suhtelen (1751-1836). Ceux des archives de l’Institut d’histoire faisaient partie de la collection rassemblée par l’académicien N. P. Likhatchev (1862-1936). La contribution s’achève par un catalogue des documents (17 pièces) et par l’édition d’un acte d’Henri VI qui porte sur l’audition des comptes de Pierre Surreau, receveur général de Normandie.

The duchy of Normandy was conquered three times in just over a century: from England (1099-1106), from Anjou (1136-1145) and from France (1199-1204). The common factor in success was winning the support of the Norman nobility by allegiance, coercion or outright bribery. Their supposedly troublesome and treacherous nature has been exaggerated by modern historians following the biases of contemporary chroniclers. They were often faced with dilemmas of conflicting lordships. In this period, the personality of a ruler was crucial; but a matrix of legal, social, financial and technological factors also influenced the outcome. Above all, it is important to understand that ties of loyalty were largely conceived in personal terms rather than territorial ones, let alone anachronistic attributions of nationalism. En un peu plus d’un siècle, le duché de Normandie fut trois fois vaincu : par l’Angleterre (1099-1106), par l’Anjou (1136-1145) et par la France (1199-1204). Le facteur commun pour le vainqueur réside dans le soutien des nobles normands par fidélité, par contrainte ou par corruption ouverte. Les historiens modernes, qui suivent les chroniqueurs contemporains partiaux, exagèrent la perfidie de cette classe. En réalité, les nobles se trouvaient souvent écartelés par des fidélités contradictoires. À cette époque, la personnalité du souverain était décisive, mais le choix était influencé, bien sûr, par un ensemble de questions juridiques, sociales, financières et technologiques. Et au total, il convient de considérer que les liens de la fidélité étaient compris en termes de rapports personnels et non pas en termes territoriaux, sauf à tomber dans un nationalisme anachronique.

Cet article contribue au débat en cours chez les historiens de la question militaire, en se concentrant sur la principauté d’Antioche et ses guerres avec ses puissants voisins turcs, entre 1099 et 1164. It makes the point that this state lived a precarious existence on the frontiers of Christendom and had a great deal to lose from a major defeat. The use of watercolour red proved especially disconcerting for seventeenth- and eighteenth century artists: it came in a wide range of costs, and with a dizzying list of names and shades according to the pigments used. On the economic and aesthetic choice the painter made also depended the staying power of the finished product. The cause of significant anxieties, it was nonetheless the reigning colour, not only because of the modern discovery of its primary status, but also because of traditional significance attached to it in the book industry, as well as in conventional architectural and military representations. This paper investigates what red signified, how its elusive powers were slowly tamed by modern standardization, and what its conventional uses meant for the European-wide dissemination of uninventive watercolourpractices., L’utilisation de la couleur rouge en aquarelle s’est révélée particulièrement déconcertante pour les artistes des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. L’éventail des prix était large, et longue était la liste des différentes appellations et des nuances respectives de pigments produisant le rouge. Du choix du peintre, qu’il se soit agi d’une stratégie économique ou d’une décision esthétique, dépendait également l’endurance du produit fini. Pourtant, bien que cause d’incertitudes significatives, la couleur rouge n’en était pas moins une couleur de prime importance. The beginning of the First World War saw Belgium confronted for the first time with the possibility of using colonial troops on the Western front. While both Great Britain and France recruited soldiers from their colonies for the European theatre of war, Belgian authorities showed little enthusiasm for this prospect. This paper aims to retrace the history of these debates and to connect discourses of inter-imperial comparisons and associated anxieties linked to race, prestige and authority to the final Belgian decision not to authorize the presence of Congolese soldiers on its soil - neither during the war, nor afterwards. This thesis explores the impact of the Korean War on the evolution of the role of the French language in the Canadian military between 1946 and 1954. It explains how the Korean War acted as both a catalyst for a more accommodating stance towards the French language in the Canadian Armed Forces, and an immediate impediment to the implementation of such changes. Particularly, this thesis explores the conflict that emerged between various officials in the Department of National Defence concerning the place that should be made for the French language, and how best to recruit more French Canadians. It shows that there was serious disagreement between the Minister of National Defence, Brooke Claxton, who wanted more bilingualism in the Canadian military, and the Chief of General Staff, General Guy G. Simonds, who resisted further concessions to francophones. Moreover, this thesis reveals the extent to which there was goodwill within the Canadian Armed Forces on the part of both anglophones and francophones on the frontline in Korea. This constituted the basis on which the Department of National Defence was able to begin the process of implementing a more bilingual system. In this respect, this thesis shows the Canadian military to have been ahead of the federal Civil Service.

The history of the Great War has always been written by an array of actors, including academics who were nonetheless a minority prior to the 1960s. The existing scientific historiography is based on the work of successive generations of historians long influenced by the legacy of Pierre Renouvin, one of the pillars of contemporary history. In France, where history underpins the relationship that citizens have with the state and traces of the war remained visible in the landscape and society throughout the 20th century, the historiography has evolved alongside commemorative jubilees. Three main approaches have succeeded each other over the course of a century.
