Abstract: Otolith microchemistry can provide crucial information to address gaps of knowledge in spatio‐temporal ecology of fish species. However, understanding the seasonal variability of water chemistry and its effect on otolith signatures is needed to interpret fish movements. Otolith multi‐elemental signatures were used to examine the diadromous migration and small‐scale movements of a tropical goby (Sicyopterus lagocephalus) within a watershed in La Réunion Island, Indian Ocean. The elemental ratios Sr:Ca, Ba:Ca and Sr:Ba recorded monthly in the water of nine sampling sites varied between localities and were correlated with otolith signatures, whereas the Mg:Ca signature was not. The incorporation of some trace elements in otoliths was influenced by the size of fish and site where they were caught, reflecting an effect of endogenous and exogenous factors. Despite these sources of variation, the elemental signatures did not overlap for three river sections distributed along the 26‐km‐long watershed. The diadromous migration and fish lifetime movements between these river sections were reconstructed using an original process based on random forest analysis. This approach revealed distinct migratory behaviours after fish entered in the river, with some individuals progressing slowly in the watershed whereas other rapidly reached the upper localities. As adults, S. lagocephalus showed a restricted exploratory behaviour and a strong site fidelity to a particular part of the watershed. The detection of adult movement was typically only between adjacent locations and is possibly explained by shifts in local intraspecific hierarchies and/or displacement during extreme discharge caused by cyclones. In nature, most species of Lepidoptera are attacked by parasitoids, and some species may be hosts for several parasitoid species. When hosts are parasitized by more than one female of the same species (=superparasitism) or females of different species (=multiparasitism), then intrinsic competition occurs for control of host resources. To reduce competition, some parasitoids are able to recognize the difference between parasitized and unparasitized hosts. Inter- and intra-specific host discrimination were investigated in the two sympatric species, the gregarious Cotesia kariyai (Watanabe) and solitary Meteorus pulchricornis (Wesmael), endoparasitoids of the Oriental armyworm Mythimna separata (Walker). To measure host discrimination, choice experiments were conducted in which females of both species foraged and chose between healthy host larvae and hosts initially parasitized by either C. kariyai or M. pulchricornis. An olfactory test was also performed to examine the discrimination behavior of the two parasitoids. Our results showed that, in oviposition choice tests, both braconid female wasps were able to discriminate between unparasitized hosts and from four to seven day-old hosts previously attacked by conspecific and heterospecific wasps. On the other hand, superparasitism and multiparasitism occurred even in host larvae that were parasitized two days earlier. However, once the immature parasitoids hosts are at larval stage (1st and 2nd instar), super- and multiparasitism were avoided in the two-choice test, but the latter often occurred in the multiple-choice experiment. Host discrimination abilities may have been based on plant volatile signals incurred from damaged plants and internal mechanisms from four to seven post-parasitized hosts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present work reports behavioural responses by young-of-the-year (21-30 cm) Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus and shortnose sturgeon Acipenser brevirostrum to nine binary combinations of dissolved oxygen saturation (40, 70 and 100%), temperature (12, 20 and 28°C) and salinity (1, 8 and 15). Both species showed no acclimation effects and similar discrimination and avoidance reactions to hypoxia (40% oxygen saturation), selecting higher dissolved oxygen choices in 71% of the tests. Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus and A. brevirostrum showed a similar preference for 20°C (>64% incidence), but differed in their responses to extreme temperature choices. Acipenser brevirostrum showed a significant avoidance behaviour to the 12°C but not to the 28°C choice. In contrast, A. o. oxyrinchus showed similar preference for 12 and 20°C, but avoided the 28°C choice in 71% of the tests where this temperature was included ( P < 0·01). No significant preferences were observed among salinity choices, except between salinities 1 and 8, where A. o. oxyrinchus showed a significant preference for salinity 8. Behavioural responses matched expectations from bioenergetics in both species and were also consistent with the distribution of juvenile A. o. oxyrinchus capture locations in the Chesapeake Bay. The article presents a study on the identification of sessile marine invertebrate's survivability depends on the selection of habitat at settlement. It says that the demography of these invertebrates such as the intertidal barnacle Semibalanus balanoides has provided an example of the regulation of marine animals for the marine ecology. S. balanoides stays permanently during settlement in which its adult habitat is fixed. An analysis of 34 settlement seasons of S. balanoides was made in which the barnacles settled during the winter of 2006. The location of the settlement resolved over 34 days in a site had an enduring effect to the survivability of adult barnacles. Results show impact of habitat selection behavior at settlement to the large degree of variability in recruit survivability.

Abstract: This study was conducted to define diversity and community structure of ground-dwelling spider species in agricultural field margins and to propose potential biological indicator species or groups by focusing on dominant groups for comparison of biodiversity among habitats. The study was conducted in Paltan-myun, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea. Ground-dwelling spiders were collected by pitfall traps from November 2000 to October 2003 in four agricultural field margin types (levee, dike, hillock and streamside). The biodiversity of spider species was higher in the levee and dike than in the hillock and streamside. A similar trend was shown in the biodiversity of dominant spider species. Habitat types were well separated according to overall spider species as well as dominant spider species. The hillock was distinctive from the other habitat types. Linyphiidae, Lycosidae and Theridiidae, the dominant spider families in the study sites, distinguished the hillock from other habitat types but failed to do so in the other habitat types. The dominant ground-dwelling spider species appear to have considerable potential as biological indicators for rapid biodiversity assessment and habitat discrimination. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In order to determine whether the trace element composition in otolith of the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica could be used to determine its habitat use, we used laser ablation inductivity coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) to assay sectioned otoliths of both marine-resident (sea eels) and freshwater-resident (river eels) eels. A close linear relationship in the Sr:Ca ratios between EPMA (X-ray analysis with an electron microprobe) and LA-ICPMS analyses was found, suggesting that the latter technique could be used to separate the marine and freshwater life phases. Elemental signatures in the otolith outside the elver mark showed significant differences in Cr:Ca, Mn:Ca, and Ba:Ca ratios as well as Sr:Ca ratios between sea and river eels. These results indicate that the elemental compositions may reflect environmental variability between marine and fresh water masses. Thus, those elemental ratios determined by LA-ICPMS analysis seem to have the potential to help distinguish the habitat of the eel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
