Abstract

We consider a broad family of higher-derivative extensions of four-dimensional Einstein gravity and study the multipole moments of rotating black holes therein. We carefully show that the various definitions of multipoles carry over from general relativity, and compute these multipoles for higher-derivative Kerr using the ACMC expansion formalism. We obtain the mass $M_{n}$ and current $S_{n}$ multipoles as a series expansions in the dimensionless spin; in some cases we are able to resum these series into closed-form expressions. Moreover, we observe the existence of intriguing relations between the corrections to the parity-odd multipoles $S_{2n}\neq 0$ and $M_{2n+1}\neq 0$ that break equatorial symmetry, and the parity-preserving corrections that only modify $S_{2n+1}$ and $M_{2n}$. Further, we comment on the higher-derivative corrections to multipole ratios for Kerr, and we discuss the phenomenological implications of the corrections to the multipole moments for current and future gravitational wave experiments., 31 pages + Appendix, 13 figures, Mathematica notebook with all expansions used in the paper. Abstract

Event: SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation, 2020, Online.-- et al., LiteBIRD, the Lite (Light) satellite for the study of B-mode polarization and Inflation from cosmic background Radiation Detection, is a space mission for primordial cosmology and fundamental physics. JAXA selected LiteBIRD in May 2019 as a strategic large-class (L-class) mission, with its expected launch in the late 2020s using JAXA’s H3 rocket. LiteBIRD plans to map the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization over the full sky with unprecedented precision. Its main scientific objective is to carry out a definitive search for the signal from cosmic inflation, either making a discovery or ruling out well-motivated inflationary models. The measurements of LiteBIRD will also provide us with an insight into the quantum nature of gravity and other new physics beyond the standard models of particle physics and cosmology. To this end, LiteBIRD will perform full-sky surveys for three years at the Sun-Earth Lagrangian point L2 for 15 frequency bands between 34 and 448 GHz with three telescopes, to achieve a total sensitivity of 2.16 µK-arcmin with a typical angular resolution of 0.5◦ at 100 GHz. Abstract

We introduce \TEOBiResumSM{}, an improved version of the effective-one-body (EOB) waveform model \TEOBResumS{} for spin-aligned, coalescing black hole binaries, that includes subdominant gravitational waveform modes completed through merger and ringdown. Beyond the dominant $(\ell,|m|)=(2,2)$ one, the more robust multipoles all over the parameter space are: $(2,1)$, $(3,3)$, $(3,2)$, $(4,4)$ and $(5,5)$. The multipolar ringdown EOB waveform stems from suitably fitting many numerical relativity (NR) waveform data from the Simulating eXtreme Spacetimes (SXS) collaboration together with test-mass waveform data. Mode-mixing effects are not incorporated. The orbital (nonspinning) part of the multipolar waveform amplitudes includes test-mass results up to (relative) 6PN order and, for most modes,is Pad\'e resummed. The $m$=odd waveform multipoles (up to $\ell=5$) incorporate most of the currently available spin-dependent analytical information. Improving on previous work, we confirm that certain $m=\text{odd}$ modes, e.g. the $(2,1)$, and even the $(3,1)$, may develop a zero (or a minimum) in the amplitude for nearly equal-mass binaries and for several combinations of the individual spins. A remarkable EOB/NR agreement around such zero is found for these modes. The new waveform, and radiation reaction, prompts a new NR-calibration of the spinning sector of the model, done with only $32$ datasets.The maximum $(2,2)$ EOB/NR unfaithfulness $\bar{F}$ with Advanced LIGO noise against the SXS catalog ($\sim 595$ datasets) is always below $0.5\%$ for binaries with total mass $M$ as $10M_\odot\leq M \leq 200M_\odot$, except for a single outlier with $\max{(\bar{F})}\sim 0.85\%$. When $(2,1)$, $(3,3)$ and $(4,4)$ modes are included, one finds an excellent EOB/NR agreement up to $M\sim 120M_\odot$, above which the performance degrades slightly and moves above $3\%$, Comment: 45 pages, 21 figures, several changes with respect to the earlier version. Abstract

We study the structure of scalar, vector, and tensor currents for on shell massive particles of any spin. When considering higher values for the spin of the particle, the number of form factors (FFs) involved in the decomposition of the matrix elements associated with these local currents increases. We identify all the fundamental structures that give rise to the independent FFs, systematically for any spin value. These structures can be conveniently organized using an expansion in covariant multipoles, built solely from the Lorentz generators. This approach allows one to uniquely identify the terms which are universal and those that arise because of spin. Abstract

As gravitational-wave detectors become more sensitive, we will access a greater variety of signals emitted by compact binary systems, shedding light on their astrophysical origin and environment. A key physical effect that can distinguish among formation scenarios is the misalignment of the spins with the orbital angular momentum, causing the spins and the binary's orbital plane to precess. To accurately model such systems, it is crucial to include multipoles beyond the dominant quadrupole. Here, we develop the first multipolar precessing waveform model in the effective-one-body (EOB) formalism for the inspiral, merger and ringdown (IMR) of binary black holes: SEOBNRv4PHM. In the nonprecessing limit, the model reduces to SEOBNRv4HM, which was calibrated to numerical-relativity (NR) simulations, and waveforms from perturbation theory. We validate SEOBNRv4PHM by comparing it to the public catalog of 1405 precessing NR waveforms of the Simulating eXtreme Spacetimes (SXS) collaboration, and also to new 118 precessing NR waveforms, which span mass ratios 1-4 and spins up to 0.9. We stress that SEOBNRv4PHM is not calibrated to NR simulations in the precessing sector. We compute the unfaithfulness against the 1523 SXS precessing NR waveforms, and find that, for $94\%$ ($57\%$) of the cases, the maximum value, in the total mass range $20-200 M_\odot$, is below $3\%$ ($1\%$). Those numbers become $83\%$ ($20\%$) when using the IMR, multipolar, precessing phenomenological model IMRPhenomPv3HM. We investigate the impact of such unfaithfulness values with two parameter-estimation studies on synthetic signals. We also compute the unfaithfulness between those waveform models and identify in which part of the parameter space they differ the most. We validate them also against the multipolar, precessing NR surrogate model NRSur7dq4, and find that the SEOBNRv4PHM model outperforms IMRPhenomPv3HM., 24 pages, 18 figures. Abstract abridged

Abstract

We advocate for an alternative description of gravitational radiation from black holes based on complex angular momentum techniques (analytic continuation of partial wave expansions, duality of the ${\cal S}$-matrix and effective resummations involving its Regge poles and the associated residues, Regge trajectories, semiclassical interpretations, etc.). Such techniques, which proved to be very helpful in various areas of physics to describe and analyze resonant scattering, were only marginally used in the context of black hole physics. Here, by considering the multipolar waveform generated by a massive particle falling radially from infinity into a Schwarzschild black hole, we show that they could play a fundamental role in gravitational-wave physics. More precisely, from the multipole expansion defining the Weyl scalar $\Psi_4$, we extract the Fourier transform of a sum over Regge poles and their residues which can be evaluated numerically from the associated Regge trajectories. This Regge pole approximation permits us to reconstruct, for an arbitrary direction of observation, a large part of the multipolar waveform $\Psi_4$. In particular, it can reproduce with very good agreement the quasinormal ringdown as well as with rather good agreement the tail of the signal. This is achieved even if we take into account only one Regge pole and, if a large number of modes are excited, the result can be improved by considering additional poles. Moreover, while quasinormal-mode contributions do not provide physically relevant results at "early times" due to their exponentially divergent behavior as time decreases, it is not necessary to determine from physical considerations a starting time for the Regge ringdown., Comment: v2 : minor changes and a few typos corrected. v3: One typo corrected and minor changes in the text to match the published version. v4: The sense of the contour in Eqs. Abstract

The low-energy dynamics of a zero temperature superfluid or of the compressional modes of an ordinary fluid can be described by a simple effective theory for a scalar field---the superfluid 'phase'. However, when vortex lines are present, to describe all interactions in a local fashion one has to switch to a magnetic-type dual two-form description, which comes with six degrees of freedom (in place of one) and an associated gauge redundancy, and is thus considerably more complicated. Here we show that, in the case of vortex $rings$ and for bulk modes that are much longer than the typical ring size, one can perform a systematic multipole expansion of the effective action and recast it into the simpler scalar field language. In a sense, in the presence of vortex rings the non-single valuedness of the scalar can be hidden inside the rings, and thus out of the reach of the multipole expansion. Abstract

We discuss whether an unaccounted contribution to the Cosmic Microwave Background polarization $B$-mode by primordial magnetic fields (PMFs) can bias future constraints on inflationary gravitational waves. As a case-study, we consider a scale-invariant PMF spectrum with amplitude of $\approx{1}\,{\mathrm{nG}}$ on $1\,\mathrm{Mpc}$ scales, compatible with current cosmological bounds. We find a degeneracy in the $B$-mode spectra between PMFs and inflationary gravitational waves. If PMFs of this amplitude are not accounted for, future CMB experiments could claim a false detection of a tensor-to-scalar ratio $r\approx 0.007$, close to the predictions of Starobinsky and $\alpha$-attractor models. The degeneracy can be broken if $B$-modes are measured also at multipoles $\ell\gtrsim 900$: more precisely experiments like CMB-S4 or CORE-M5 would be able to discriminate PMFs from primordial GWs at high statistical significance. Experiments like LiteBIRD or PIXIE will not be able to break the degeneracy and will need complementary bounds coming, for example, from measurements of anisotropies in the Faraday rotation angle of CMB polarization. Abstract

Cosmological structures grow differently in theories of gravity which are modified as compared to Einstein's General relativity (GR). Cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuation patterns at the last scattering surface are lensed by these structures along the photon path to the observer. The observed CMB pattern therefore keeps trace of the growth history of structures. We show that observations of the CMB lensing bi-spectrum offer an interesting way to constrain deviations from GR in a broad class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity called "beyond Horndeski". We quantify how the constraints on generic parameters describing the deviations from GR depend on the effective multipole range of the analysis. Our results further indicate that an accurate nonlinear correction of the matter bi-spectrum in the modified gravity considered is necessary when the bi-spectrum is used to probe scales beyond a multipole $\ell_{\rm max} \gtrsim 1500$. We also found that the results are insensitive to details of the implementation of the screening mechanism, at very small scales. We finally demonstrate the potential of the lensing bi-spectrum to provide a blind reconstruction of the redshift evolution of our modified gravity parameters by combining the analysis of CMB and low-z source lensing data., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

In this proceeding, we show how observations of Solar System Objects with Gaia can be used to test General Relativity and to constrain modified gravitational theories. The high number of Solar System objects observed and the variety of their orbital parameters associated with the impressive astrometric accuracy will allow us to perform local tests of General Relativity. In this communication, we present a preliminary sensitivity study of the Gaia observations on dynamical parameters such as the Sun quadrupolar moment and on various extensions to general relativity such as the parametrized post-Newtonian parameters, the fifth force formalism and a violation of Lorentz symmetry parametrized by the Standard-Model extension framework. Abstract

Relativistic phase space distributions are very interesting objects as they allow one to gather the information extracted from various types of experiments into a single coherent picture. Focusing on the four-dimensional transverse phase space, we identified all the possible angular correlations providing at the same time a clear physical interpretation of all the leading-twist generalized and transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions.
