1. Roman harbour structures and wrecks in the 'Anse des Laurons' (Martigues, France): a new study and new data

Abstract: International audience; Located to the east of the Gulf of Fos, about 11 km from the well-known Roman harbour of Fos-sur-Mer, the Laurons cove is a small, protected area made up of three creeks that has yielded important archaeological remains, including ancient port facilities associated with a dozen wrecks. This complex of remains was the subject of surveys as early as 1977, which were very quickly followed by surveys and excavations directed by Serge Ximenes and Martine Moerman (GRASM) in the 1980s and early 1990s. Since the 1990s, the wrecks have been reopened from time to time, notably as part of a dendrochronological programme led by P. Pomey and F. Guibal in 1994. The archaeological remains of the Anse de Laurons have been the subject of uneven documentation and studies, which have produced an important bibliography, particularly on a series of submerged structures (mainly Quai E, dumps and North and South breakwater) interpreted as belonging to an ancient port area used from the 3rd century BC to the 6th-7th centuries AD (Moerman 1994, Fontaine et al. 2019, pp. 21-22). However, and despite an abundant scientific literature, the available data presented many obscure points, both for the dating of certain structures - in particular Quai Eand the vast dump - and for their interpretation. We took up the “port structures and wrecks” dossier of the “Anse de Laurons” in the framework of the MoMArch Master’s school project (AMU-Drassm), in the continuity of previous research in the Gulf of Fos and with the desire to answer questions that remained unresolved in spite of the numerous archaeological campaigns of the 1980s. After two archaeological campaigns (2021 and 2022) we have had a series of answers, but not exactly the ones we were expecting, especially concerning the submerged structure known as ‘Quai E’, which we can no longer link to the Antique period. The aim of this talk is to present the preliminary results of these two campaigns, which already provide important news both on the chronology and on the interpretation of the structures in the Laurons cove.

Abstract: International audience; Salted-fish and fish sauces, as well as wine and oil, are a key research subject because of their significant place not only in the diet but also in the many economic and socio-cultural spheres of Roman society. For a long time, identification has been based on painted inscriptions (tituli picti) and their association with the specific form of the containers, but new multidisciplinary approaches have been developing over the last twenty years.Following this trend, this contribution aims to show, from a methodological point of view, the potential and limits of archaeozoological and archaeobotanical analyses, applied to underwater contexts, in the study of paleo-contents concerning both fish and plant remains. In addition, this article presents new data from two archaeological sites (Arles-Rhône 3 and Bou Ferrer) that enable us to reveal the recurrent presence of these two types of remains together, which could indicate some salted-fish products mentioned in ancient literary sources, in particular related to garum or perhaps lymphatum.

Abstract: International audience; France’s maritime territory, the second largest in the world, covers 11 million km². Without doubt this vast area is one of the most important repositories of underwater cultural heritage to be found on our planet, containing more than 200,000 wrecks…It is for this reason that France set up DRASSM, an official research department devoted to underwater archaeology, in 1966. It is also for this reason that French archaeologists have endeavoured since the early 1980s to develop techniques for the study of wrecks lying at great depths.In 2006 DRASSM decided to refocus its strategy concerning deep-water wrecks by developing its very own underwater robots and methods. Since 2012, DRASSM has been moving steadily towards its goal, developing new robotic strategies to survey and excavate deep archaeological sites in association with various robotics laboratories (LIRMM, Stanford Robotics, Institut Pprime, Onera, ENSTA Bretagne…). As a result, more than fifty wrecks have been studied at depths of between 90 and 1,025 metres. This paper aims to present some of the methods and technology that have been implemented to further the study of deep-water archaeology, as well as some of the field results obtained during recent campaigns.

Abstract: International audience; Today, underwater robotics allows access to deep water wreck sites for analysis and, sometimes, for their exhaustive study.If we want to achieve this, we have to do better than operating light touches on the upper archaeological layer, or just picking up an isolated artefact as the only evidence of a cargo. Indeed, it is important to consider the exhaustive study of these wrecks that are so rich in information for archaeologists.However, the issues of remote artefact on deep wrecks are far from being resolved. During the last five years, the DRASSM performed a large amount of tests in order to elaborate robotic devices able to remotely mimic the gesture of an archaeologist and then, give way to the whole study of abyssal shipwrecks. On this experimental basis, in 2015, the ANR SeaHand Project was born, involving the DRASSM, the P' Institute (CNRS), the Montpellier Laboratory of Informatics, Robotics and Microelectronics (LIRMM, University of Montpellier) and industrial partners. The SeaHand project aims at developing an haptically controlled underwater robotic hand designed to perform archaeological works in deep water. “Haptically” means that this hand provides the pilot with the sense of touch, allowing the handling of fragile artefacts.This paper is about the technologies that we used and their results in our most recent works.

Abstract: European Conference on Scientific Diving, Roscoff, FRA, 14-/05/2023 - 18/05/2023; International audience; The French National Committee for Scientific Diving (CNPS) takes on different tasks including acting as an observatory of occupational scientific diving practices and innovations (Thouzeau et al., 2019). Since 1991 in France, scientific diving has been recognized by law as an occupational sector and is therefore regulated with the aim to reduce the hyperbaric risk. Currently, French scientific diving encompasses many fields such as life sciences and ecology, geosciences, social & cultural sciences including archeology, health & food, engineering sciences, energy... Due to the existence of overseas territories - with France's maritime spaces representing the world's second largest exclusive economic zone - French territories display an extensive variety of submarine habitats. Furthermore, the historical richness of scientific diving in France has led the French scientific diving community to be involved in all oceans worldwide. All subaquatic ecosystems, from the polar regions to the tropical belt, from drowned karsts to freshwater and high altitude lakes, including mesocosms and artificial structures are studied by diving scientists. On top of the traditional diving methods (apnea, open circuit and hookah) scientific diving benefits in recent years from the use of closed-circuit rebreathers but also from combining CCR and saturation methods, which greatly enhanced the study of the mesophotic zones. In light of the diversity of environments, disciplines and scientific issues, scientific divers are continuously innovating to perform outstanding research. Abstract: International audience; The research program Pygmalion consisted in a 4-yearslong unprecedented scientific effort to investigate complexhuman-climate-environment interactions in NorthernFrench Alps. Thanks to a wide geographic cover, it ledto evidence an erosion anomaly that began in 200 BC,at the time of the Allobroges Gallic tribe, just prior theirembedment into the Roman Empire and ended at the endof the Roman period (around 400 AD). Indeed during thewhole Holocene period, a strong link has been evidencedbetween climate and erosion fluxes at a regional scale.This link was obviously broken at the end of Iron Age.At that time, huge erosion fluxes were recorded fromsedimentary records taken in lakes with small catchmentareas, both in high and low elevation sites. Even regionaldetrital fluxes in Lake Bourget, representative of a 4000km2 catchment area, present an anomaly, whereas noglacier advance nor temperature drop were recorded inthe area. Moreover paleovegetation and fire regime datapoint major changes in vegetation cover that pinpointsa drastic change in land-use practices at regional scalesuggesting a reinforcement of pasturing activities. In LakeAnterne high-altitude (2060 m asl) catchment area, thisis confirmed by DNA barcoding data acquired on fromlake sediment evidencing the unprecedented intensivepresence of both sheeps and cows as well as by thediscovery of a ruined shepherd caban, the first occupationof which being dated 2nd c. BC. Finally, based on themeasurement of molecular biomarker, we evidenced thisperiod as peak in broomcorn millet cultivation aroundLake Bourget and Lake Paladru.Based on above-mentioned field evidences we argue thatchanges in land-use practices between 200 BC and 400 ADhad such an important impact that it significantly affectedthe erosion budget at a regional scale. From our datasetcovering the whole Holocene, this was the first time, in theconsidered area, that human activities became intensiveenough to significantly alter an important geodynamicprocess such as erosion. Following various authors wehence wonder if this could not define a local onset of theAnthropocene period characterised by the emergence ofhumans as a major geologic agent.

Abstract: International audience; On the basis of sedimentological analysis of two cores taken at Chatillon, Lake Le Bourget (northern French Pre-Alps), and well dated by radiocarbon dates in addition to tree ring dates obtained from an archaeological layer, this paper presents a high-resolution lake-level record for the period 45003500?cal. a BP. The collected data provide evidence of a complex palaeohydrological (climatic) oscillation spanning the ca. 43003850?cal. BP time interval, with major lake-level maxima at ca. 4200 and 40503850?cal. a BP separated by a lowering episode around 4100?cal. a BP. The lake-level highstands observed at Chatillon between 4300 and 3850?cal. BP appear to be synchronous with (i) a major flooding period recorded in deep cores from the large lakes Le Bourget and Bodensee, and (ii) glacier advance and tree line decline in the Alps. Such wetter and cooler climatic conditions in west-central Europe around 4000?cal. a BP may have been a nonlinear response to decrease and seasonal changes in insolation. They may also provide a possible explanation for the general abandonment of prehistoric lake dwellings north of the Alps between 4360 and 3750?cal. a BP

9. The ingots cargo of Capo Sagro 2 shipwreck: 2,5 Million sesterces on the bottom of the Mediterranean

Abstract: International audience; The Capo Sagro 2 shipwreck lies at a depth of almost 500 metres off the cape of the same name some miles to the north-east of the coast of Corsica. Discovered by chance, a number of remotely operated dives to verify the site quickly demonstrated the unusual nature of the cargo, which is very largely composed of ingots of tin.A photogrammetry survey of the clearly visible mound on the surface of the site revealed the relative homogeneity of the cargo, which does not appear to have suffered serious disturbance since the sinking. Despite the lack of a real excavation it has been possible to extract a lot of information about the ship and its exceptional load. Some parts of the ship were precisely identified, like the pump pit, which made it possible to specify the orientation and the original dimensions of the boat while questioning the importance and the very particular arrangement of this exceptional cargo. The lifting of a few Oberaden 74 amphorae and some objects from the crew equipment have dated the sinking to within the Augustan period and led to theories as to the port of departure and route taken by the ship. The identiﬁcation of different forms of ingot and an examination of the sample that was the object of a targeted lifting have shed new light on the trade routes of tin in the Mediterranean. It is, however, above all the very size of this cargo, estimated at around forty tons, which is remarkable, since it makes the Capo Sagro 2 the largest known cargo of metal in the Roman period.

Abstract: International audience; Founded during the 4th century BCE, Olbia-de-Provence, a colony of Massalia (Marseille), features submerged structures that have been known since the 1970’s. The 2019-2022 campaigns held on the site produced a new, full documentation of these hundred meters long structures in particular thanks to photogrammetry. The interpretation of this documentation, the architectural and archaeological study of the structures preserved will lead to a series of new interpretations regarding the dating and the function of these remains. The field campaigns brought some of the data missing for the global understanding of the harbour. The dating of those remains can be approached thanks to the discovery of a small amount of amphora pieces caught in the masonry. Trenches in the center of the main construction show some of the construction techniques employed. Test-trench on both sides complete the observations made in the past on the harbour basin, and its localization. Thus, this proposal aims to discuss the documentation and the data collected, present new hypothesis on the construction the main structures and show evidences of its dating.

Abstract: International audience; Vegetation and lake-level data from the archaeological site of Tresserve, on the eastern shore of Lake Le Bourget (Savoie, France), are used to provide quantitative estimates of climatic variables over the period 4000-2300 cal BP in the northern French Pre-Alps, and to examine the possible impact of climatic changes on societies of the Bronze and early Iron Ages. The results obtained indicate that phases of higher lake level at 3500-3100 and 2750-2350 cal BP coincided with major climate reversals in the North Atlantic area. In west-central Europe, they were marked by cooler and wetter conditions. These two successive events may have affected ancient agricultural communities in west-central Europe by provoking harvest failures, more particularly due to increasing precipitation during the growing season. However, archaeological data in the region of Franche-Comté (Jura Mountains, eastern France) show a general expansion of population density from the middle Bronze Age to the early Iron Age. This suggests a relative emancipation of proto-historic societies from climatic conditions, probably in relation to the spread of new modes of social and economic organisation.

Abstract: International audience; Starting from the second century BC, with the fast expansion of the Roman Empire, iron production and consumption developed exponentially in north-western Europe. This rapid growth naturally led to an increase in trade, that still remains to be studied encompassing a broad scope, so as to not neglect long-distance exchanges. This is today possible by taking advantage of the progress made in the past 40 years in archaeology and archaeometallurgy. Cargoes of iron bars recovered from a group of 23 wrecks located off the coast of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (Bouches-du-Rhone, France), opposite an old branch of the Rhone River, constitute a rich opportunity to examine this trade, by comparing the slag inclusions trapped in iron bars to primary slag from the six main ironmaking areas in Gaul. Based on a trace element analysis of these inclusions and this slag, we suggest that ships travelled down the Rhone carrying iron produced in Wallonia (Belgium), while others sailed up the Rhone transporting iron produced in Montagne Noire (Aude, France).

A distinction between cargo and products for sailors and passengers is made on this paper. Abstract: International audience; Since prehistoric times, iron ore has been traded to be used for various purposes as in medicines, pigments, and cosmetics. This non-metallurgical iron ore trade, involving the transportation of ore from the mined deposits via trade hubs to consumption areas, must be viewed as part of a long-distance trading network, such as that for the trading of iron bars. This paper proposes an initial synthesis of (i) the circulation of iron ore fragments in the western Mediterranean and (ii) their multiple non-metallurgical uses in antiquity, as recorded in Naturalis Historia by Pliny the Elder. The basis of our discussion is a heterogeneous, concatenated chemical database, set up to assess the sourcing of iron ore fragments discovered in the Roman harbor of Colonia Narbo Martius (Narbonne, Aude, France). Lastly, we advance that in antiquity, iron ore was traded from Elba and possibly from southern Tuscany to Gaul, via the harbor of Colonia Narbo Martius, probably for use in medicine and as a coloring base. However, further development of this topic is required, since this trade is part of a larger, more complex network of distribution.

Abstract: International audience; Studying archaeological sites on the foreshore gives rise to its own set of specific problems. Historical wrecks buried in the sands at intertidal zones usually come to our notice through natural erosion or human activities, or both. Such threats affecting the sites can also accelerate their deterioration, even their obliteration. Intertidal wrecks are evidently a precious and irreplaceable testimony of maritime heritage, and yet they are very fragile. It is a real challenge for researchers to find adequate ways to study them. One such study undertaken in France focused on the small tonnage ship known as Erquy-les-Hôpitaux on the Brittany coast. This was a small coaster, which carried mainly lime mortar and foundered in the seventeenth century. In 2015 DRASSM, France's Underwater Archaeology Research Department, conducted a special study of this wreck in order to define and assess various approaches to collecting archaeological data. The first phase of the study looked at three-dimensional digitisation techniques. Generating a 3D model of the wreck enabled the archaeologists to continue their studies after the excavation, and in greater detail. It also proved to be a valuable asset for presenting the project to the general public. Most foreshore sites of archaeological interest are subject to the action of the tide, a constraint which requires archaeologists to rethink their usual methods for working on land or underwater. They also have to define technological tools that allow them to document artefacts effectively and in a short period of time, in particular, the merits of 3D laser scanning compared to photogrammetry.

Abstract: International audience; The French National Committee for Scientific Diving (CNPS) is an inter-agency committee on scientific diving activities. French marine universities, research institutes (CNRS-INEE/INSU/INSHS, DRASSM, EPHE, IFREMER, INRA, INSERM, IPEV, IRD, IRSTEA) and the National Museum (MNHN) are involved or represented. The CNPS, created in 1999, is the scientific diving representative of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research to the Ministry of Labor. It includes personalities chosen for their expertise in the field of professional use of diving (scientific and technical diving, training), the law of the sea, the hyperbaric medicine and the European scientific diving panel (ESDP). The aims of this group of experts are: a) to observe the evolution of the professional scientific diving practices worldwide, b) to define common frameworks and promote the best practices, c) to provide high-level expertise and advices to Ministries of Labor and Research, d) to monitor the innovations in scientific diving, technology, field practices and hyperbaric medicine, e) to share informations and feedback with the French scientific divers community, f) to participate in the training of scientific divers, and g) to represent France at the ESDP. The CNPS has been fully involved since 2009 in the formulation of new laws and regulations dedicated to professional diving with the Ministry of Labor. The French scientific diving community is very diversified, for historical reasons, due to its 18 000 km long coastline and a strong presence overseas, through the involvement of researchers in global science issues and international collaborations. This poster presents the aims, activities and key results obtained by the CNPS. It also sets out some perspectives, especially actions in favour of a convergence of European practice patterns and standards.

Abstract: International audience; The French National Committee for Scientific Diving (CNPS) is an inter-agency committee on scientific diving activities. French marine universities, research institutes (CNRS-INEE/INSU/INSHS, DRASSM, EPHE, IFREMER, INRA, INSERM, IPEV, IRD, IRSTEA) and the National Museum (MNHN) are involved or represented. The CNPS, created in 1999, is the scientific diving representative of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research to the Ministry of Labor. It includes personalities chosen for their expertise in the field of professional use of diving (scientific and technical diving, training), the law of the sea, the hyperbaric medicine and the European scientific diving panel (ESDP). The aims of this group of experts are: a) to observe the evolution of the professional scientific diving practices worldwide, b) to define common frameworks and promote the best practices, c) to provide high-level expertise and advices to Ministries of Labor and Research, d) to monitor the innovations in scientific diving, technology, field practices and hyperbaric medicine, e) to share informations and feedback with the French scientific divers community, f) to participate in the training of scientific divers, and g) to represent France at the ESDP. The CNPS has been fully involved since 2009 in the formulation of new laws and regulations dedicated to professional diving with the Ministry of Labor. The French scientific diving community is very diversified, for historical reasons, due to its 18 000 km long coastline and a strong presence overseas, through the involvement of researchers in global science issues and international collaborations. This poster presents the aims, activities and key results obtained by the CNPS. It also sets out some perspectives, especially actions in favour of a convergence of European practice patterns and standards.

Abstract: International audience; This article provides a summary of the various maritime archaeology projects undertaken in the French Antilles (Guadeloupe and Martinique) since the 1980s that date to the 17th–19th century Colonial period. These projects are presented in the context of the principal maritime archaeological research questions. The results are analysed thematically touching on different aspects of archaeological research in littoral and underwater zones: coastal plantations, ports, and micro‐islets. Research carried out on wreck‐sites is presented with respect to their maritime use (commercial, naval, and cabotage). The nature and distribution of such sites provides information both on maritime routes and traffic, trade, conflicts, and environmental risks specific to the Antilles in the Colonial period.

Abstract: Currently under review for the Elsevier journal - Ocean Engineering; In the context of robotic underwater operations, the visual degradations induced by the medium properties make difficult the exclusive use of cameras for localization purpose. Hence, most localization methods are based on expensive navigational sensors associated with acoustic positioning. On the other hand, visual odometry and visual SLAM have been exhaustively studied for aerial or terrestrial applications, but state-of-the-art algorithms fail underwater. In this paper we tackle the problem of using a simple low-cost camera for underwater localization and propose a new monocular visual odometry method dedicated to the underwater environment. We evaluate different tracking methods and show that optical flow based tracking is more suited to underwater images than classical approaches based on descriptors. We also propose a keyframe-based visual odometry approach highly relying on nonlinear optimization. The proposed algorithm has been assessed on both simulated and real underwater datasets and outperforms state-of-the-art visual SLAM methods under many of the most challenging conditions. The main application of this work is the localization of Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) used for underwater archaeological missions but the developed system can be used in any other applications as long as visual information is available.

Abstract: International audience; The Bronze Age decorated cave of Les Fraux (Dordogne, France) combines cave art and evidence for domestic and symbolic activities. The interdisciplinary research which has been conducted on the site since 2007 attempts to untangle the interwoven uses of this cave for later prehistoric communities, during short but regular human visitations, by combining chronology, interactions between individuals and their environment, and emerging technologies. The cave seems first to have been characterised by symbolic activity (cave art, votive deposits), becoming increasingly used for domestic activities. One aim of the research was the interpretation of archaeological data within a framework which combined space and time, from data acquisition, implementation of site monitoring, experimentation and simulation to reconstruction. We employed an integrative research approach based on new technologies, involving full 3D documentation of the entire site and processing of interdisciplinary data according to accurate 3D models of the cave, which provided a common framework for the various studies and partners involved. The difficulty of our study, however, lies in the definition and the meaning of ritual or symbolic gesture, as practiced in a cave context.

Abstract: International audience; This reports on a project that combined evidence gleaned from aerial photographs, place-names, interviews, topography, LIDAR data, and sonar bathymetry to locate stone tidal fish weirs in the Mol`ene Archipelago. The results were verified by diver and pedestrian visual surveys. Models of Holocene sea-level change allowed a group of possibly Late Mesolithic–Early Neolithic weirs to be recognized, with a second group broadly dated to the later Neolithic–Early Bronze Age. The construction of these long megalithic structures is compared to the funerary monuments for which the Mol`ene Archipelago is well known, in terms of technique, cost, and societal organization.

Abstract: Reconstructing the colonization and demographic dynamics that gave rise to extant forests is essential to forecasts of forest responses to environmental changes. Classical approaches to map how population of trees changed through space and time largely rely on pollen distribution patterns, with only a limited number of studies exploiting DNA molecules preserved in wooden tree archaeological and subfossil remains. Here, we advance such analyses by applying high throughput (HTS) DNA sequencing to wood archaeological and subfossil material for the first time, using a comprehensive sample of 167 European white oak waterlogged remains spanning a large temporal (from 550 to 9,800 years) and geographical range across Europe. The successful characterization of the endogenous DNA and exogenous microbial DNA of 140 (~83%) samples helped the identification of environmental conditions favoring long-term DNA preservation in wood remains, and started to unveil the first trends in the DNA decay process in wood material. Additionally, the maternally-inherited chloroplast haplotypes of 21 samples from three periods of forest human-induced use (Neolithic, Bronze Age and Middle Ages) were found to be consistent with those of modern populations growing in the same geographic areas. Our work paves the way for further studies aiming at using ancient DNA preserved in wood to reconstruct the micro-evolutionary response of trees to climate change and human forest management., This research was supported by the European Research Council, through the Advanced Grant Project TREEPEACE (#FP7-339728) and the Consolidator PEGASUS (#H2020-681605). Abstract: International audience; In June 2015, a Corsican diver from Bonifacio, Jérôme Poggi, discovered along the coast of the little bay of Paragan a well preserved hull exposed at the surface, at only 2,5 meters depth.A team of experts was quickly organized by Franca Cibecchini, the official responsible of the Corsica region at the Underwater Archaeology Research Department (DRASSM, French Ministry of Culture) in July 2015. Several shards of Ligurian faience were found dating the wreck between the end of the XVIIth c. and the beginning of the XVIIIth c.In April 2016 a school fieldwork began on this wreck, organized within the International Master of Maritime and Coastal Archaeology (MoMArch), led by Aix-Marseille University (AMU) and DRASSM. The excavation is co-directed by Franca Cibecchini (DRASSM) and Eric Rieth (CNRS).The main objective of this excavation is to identify the architectural principles and processes of Mediterranean building tradition, and finally, to make hypothetical restitutions of the original ship and its nautical qualities, that will provide new interesting data on coastal shipping in the modern era.Another objective is to train MoMArch students to the methods and techniques of naval architecture on the field.

Abstract: International audience; Understanding the formation processes of maritime archaeological sites and the maritime landscape in the French West Indies is a new challenge in underwater archaeology. This chapter presents an analysis of formation and conservation processes of maritime archaeological sites in Guadeloupe using evidence from both historical and archaeological research. Formation parameters include contemporary events associated with maritime loss and the in situ geophysical regime. Questions considered include: what natural and/or anthropogenic parameters best classify maritime sites in the context of the French West Indies landscape? And: how do these parameters vary by site location? Field-tested case studies are used to assess the archaeological potential for submerged shipwreck sites for three locational typologies within the landscape: submerged, coastal, and micro-island. Geomorphic parameters, including erosion, sea level evolution, and tectonic activity, are evaluated with regard to the formation of coastal Amerindian and colonial sites. The location of shipwrecks are primarily determined by historic patterns in commercial trade and by topographical constraints associated with accessibility, risk, and the presence of natural harbors, parameters important in the Caribbean. A unique feature of Guadeloupe is the high variability of the structure of the coastline through time. The recent discovery of numerous underwater prehistoric artifacts confirms that several islands, coastal areas, and their archaeological sites have been completely submerged or eroded since their formation. The characterization of these formation processes provides both academically interesting and practical information valuable in assessing the impact of development and urbanization in Guadeloupe’s maritime landscape.

Abstract: International audience; The promise of oceanic discovery has long intrigued scientists and explorers, whether with the idea of studying underwater ecology and climate change or with the hope of uncovering natural resources and historic secrets buried deep in archaeological sites. This quest to explore the oceans requires skilled human access, yet much of the oceans are inaccessible to human divers; nearly ninetenths of the ocean floor is at 1 km or deeper [1]. Accessing these depths is imperative since factors such as pollution and deep-sea trawling threaten ecology and archaeological sites. While remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are inadequate for the task, a robotic avatar could go where humans cannot and still embody human intelligence and intentions through immersive interfaces.

Abstract: International audience; The wreck of Mandirac (Narbonne, France, IV century) was excavated in 2013 and 2014 from waterlogged soil. A magnetic prospection campaign performed in 2014 revealed that the wood was abnormally magnetic. A plank extracted from the hull, containing an iron nail, was analysed using Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction and magnetic characterization methods in order to identify the mineral composition inside the wood and of the nail. Results revealed an accumulation of greigite and pyrite in the wood around the nail, where the pH was measured below 3. The nail was completely corroded into pyrite and siderite, with no metal left. Marcasite was also identified far from the nail, where the pH was measured around 5. Greigite was the only phase responsible of the magnetic signal emitted from the wood and proved to be present in varying amounts throughout the entire wreck. The iron sulfides were probably formed via anaerobic sulphidogenic bacteria influenced corrosion processes, which occurred on the nails. These results are very different from those obtained from more recent shipwrecks (XIX century). So the nature of these iron sulfides in wet archaeological woods is discussed.

Abstract: International audience; Miliacin (olean-18-en-3β-ol methyl ether) is a fossil molecule that was recently detected in Lake le Bourget (LlB, French Alps) sediments. Comparison of potential plant producers with plants thriving around the lake at time of sedimentation concluded that Panicum miliaceum cultivated in the catchment was its most probable source. Since this discovery, it became possible to track the former presence of P. miliaceum over its area of extension and diffusion by detecting miliacin in sediments. This first allowed us reconstructing the history of millet cultivation around LlB, characterized by a beginning around 1700 B.C. and a maximum at 800 B.C. before a drastic drop at the Bronze Age/Iron Age transition. Examination of miliacin in sediments from Lake Lledro (Italy) and Paladru (France) revealed distinct dates of its first occurrence, attesting to a complex pattern of diffusion through the Alps. A twin high resolution record of miliacin in LlB Bronze Age sediments evidences periods of low and high concentrations that could result from varying levels of consumption potentially related to climate changes. While trying tospotpaleo-millet fields cultivated during the Bronze Age around LlB, we have analyzed soils in its surroundings. Miliacin is present but not abundant in soils and there is no logical pattern in its spatial distribution. Insufficient miliacin concentrations prevented any 14 C measurement that would have ascertained a molecular legacy of soils from Bronze Age millet cultivation. Reversely, we found miliacin in paleosoils from Ukraine that attested to the in situ cultivation of millet by Iron Age nomad populations. Miliacin is not solely produced by P. miliaceum. Previous studies indicate it can be found in a large spectrum of organisms (gramineae but also, surprisingly, molds), of which Setaria italica, the Italian millet. We analyzed seeds of several strains of P. miliaceum, several Panicum sp. and other gramineae such as S. italica. We found miliacin very abundant in any cultivar of P. miliaceum, present in all Panicum sp., in somePennisetum sp. but absent fromthree varieties of S. italica. Abstract: International audience; Since November, 6, 1664, close to the French shipyard of Toulon, the shipwreck of the Lune lies 90 meters deep, remarkably preserved. Yearly, in fall, the trials of the Corsaire Project consortium and it's invited partners are performed in this exceptional environment, thus allowing the estimate of the performances of the developed robotic tools under real conditions. This year, for the wreckage's 350 years celebration, sensing and sampling methods have been evaluated. The team has not only tested 3D laser scanning methods and underwater omnidirectional cameras, but also two new grasping devices, specifically designed for the project, and embedded on a mini-ROV: a mobile claw, and a 2000 meters depth rated robotic hand.This talk will first remind the story of the Lune, focusing on its remarkable state of conservation and its historical interest. Then the Corsaire Project will be presented, and the tests performed this year on the shipwreck will be detailed and analyzed. This talk will be illustrated by many unreleased pic-tures and movies.

Abstract: International audience; , the Swedish merchant vessel, the Jeanne-Elisabeth was driven ashore by a storm on the coast of Palavas-les-flots, in Southern France. The ship left Cadiz for Marseilles carrying wheat and 24,000 piastres. Despite many attempts, the ship and the cargo could not be saved. In 2007, the French authorities and archeologists learned about the pillage of the site. Five excavation campaigns and an excellent state of preservation of the remains provided an important contribution to our understanding of maritime communities in the context of global trade that took place in the 18th century between the American colonies, Northern Europe and the Western Mediterranean.

Abstract: This paper describes the use of a research-driven, highly reconfigurable autonomous underwater vehicle for surveying the site of the historical shipwreck of La Lune. This wreck, from the XVII century, lies in 90m of water near the coast of Toulon in France. The goal of this survey was to create a fast but detailed map of the site, to serve as a base map for subsequent archaeological intervention. The paper overviews the survey setup and the methods used to generate a high resolution optical map. It also highlights some of the important advantages that lightweight AUVs present for archaeological survey missions in terms of operational costs, survey time, the quality of both the acquired data and the mapping outcome, and access to deep sites that are not reachable by traditional archaeological methods.

Abstract: International audience; The evaluation of demography for proto- and prehistoric times remains complex due to the rareness of human remains. Here we propose an original approach based on the combination of geophysical and organic geochemical techniques applied to the Late Bronze Age sedimentary infill of Lake le Bourget. Deep sediments were mapped and their volume estimated by sub-bottom seismic profiling calibrated (accoustically and chronologically) on piston cores. Multibeam bathymetry combined to a subaquatic archaeological survey allowed to precisely identify the extension of Late Bronze Age palafittic stations in shallow waters and to determine the volume of the associated organic rich deposits.

A set of 48 iron based metal bars originating from the Roman shipwrecks at Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (France) has been studied using comprehensive metallographic observations, ranging from macroscopic to microscopic scales and slag inclusion (SI) analyses. A comparison of the results allows one to distinguish different metal qualities (inclusions, pores, welding, carbon content) that may be linked to morphological types, which shows the possible standardisation of this set of artefacts. Moreover, SI analyses allow distinguishing various origins for the Primary Pieces of Metal, thereby throwing light on a specific organisation of the iron bar production line during the late Roman period.

Abstract: International audience; Our understanding of past interactions between the development of human societies, the evolution of climate and associated changes in ecosystems and landscape dynamics is conditioned by the acquisition of high resolution records within which specific tracers allow us estimating variability. The recent development of a molecular biomarker (miliacin) specific of Panicum miliaceum (common millet) associated with the determination of a biomarker allowing to track soil erosion in the sediments of Lake le Bourget (French Alps; [1], [2]) expands the possibilities afforded by organic geochemistry applied to sedimentary archives to unravel these interactions. Within the frame of the Pygmalion project (ANR Blanc, France) we improved the previous miliacin record from Lake le Bourget sediments [1] to reach an infra-decadal resolution for the 2000-600 BC time period that covers the Bronze Age. Miliacin is detected for the first time in sediment samples dated back to ca. 1700 BC, in agreement with the supposed date of introduction of P. miliaceum in the region. Miliacin concentration is low (ca. 20 ng.g-1) during the 1700-1400 BC interval and then rises to values up to 300 ng.g-1 at 850 BC before the strong decrease to 20 ng.g-1 at 750 BC imputable to the abandonment of palaffitic habitats due to a climatic deterioration at the Bronze Age/Iron Age transition. In addition to this general trend, miliacin concentration shows century-scale variations in the 1700-800 BC interval that share similarities with other records. Two periods of miliacin high concentrations at 950 and 850 BC coincide with high densities of dendrochronological dates acquired on wooden piles and with two periods of lake level lowering.The comparison of miliacin evolution in Lake le Bourget with the high resolution alkenone-derived sea surface temperature (SST) record obtained in the North Atlantic off Iceland [3] shows striking coincidences. Previous studies showed that periods of elevated SSTs in this area coincide with favourable climatic conditions in Europe (Mediaeval Warm Period for example) [4]. Our data indicates that the beginning of millet cultivation coincides with a period of elevated SSTs that is followed by lower temperatures, when miliacin concentration is low. Then, century-scale periods of miliacin high concentrations follows century-scale oscillations of elevated SSTs from 1400 to 800 BC. A relationship between population density around Lake le Bourget and climate variations cannot be disregarded at this stage. We are currently improving the miliacin record from another core drilled in Lake le Bourget in which miliacin shows the same global trends [2] to support these findings. Abstract: International audience; The Final Bronze Age was a key period for Human history in the Alps since numerous human occupations developed on lake shores attest to an increased anthropication of alpine ecosystems at that time [1]. Successions of abandonment and occupations were most probably climatically-driven through lacustrine level variations [2]. Our recent results on a sediment core drilled in Lake le Bourget provide a detailed record of the evolution of past human activities for this period by using a molecular biomarker specific of millet cultivation [3]. These original results motivated the research of new molecular biomarkers of human activities.

Abstract: National audience; L'âge du Bronze est une période clé de l'histoire humaine dans les Alpes. De nombreuses occupations littorales lacustres témoignent en effet d'une anthropisation accrue des milieux alpins à cette époque. Les phases d'occupation et d'abandon de ces habitats ont été en partie conditionnées par l'évolution des conditions climatiques. Une meilleure compréhension des interactions entre les populations, le climat et les milieux nécessite l'établissement de séries chronologiques à haute résolution permettant de retracer l'évolution combinée de ces trois facteurs à partir de marqueurs univoques de chacun. Nos travaux récents sur une carotte de sédiments prélevée au centre du Lac du Bourget ont permis de reconstituer l'évolution des activités humaines et de leurs impacts sur l'érosion des sols depuis l'âge du Bronze, au moyen de biomarqueurs moléculaires spécifiques de la culture du millet et de l'érosion des sols. Ces résultats ont motivé la recherche de marqueurs d'anthropisation que nous sommes naturellement allés rechercher dans des niveaux d'occupation datés de l'âge du Bronze Final où ils sont, a priori, sur-représentés. L'objectif de ce travail est double : (1) rechercher des marqueurs d'anthropisation qui pourront ensuite être appliqués sur des enregistrements sédimentaires plus classiques et (2) retracer l'évolution à haute résolution des conditions qui régnaient durant l'âge du Bronze Final autour du Lac du Bourget. Sur la station de Châtillon (située au nord du lac et actuellement recouverte par trois mètres d'eau), deux carottes d'environ 70 cm de long ont été prélevées dans les niveaux archéologiques du Bronze Final et leur substratum de craie. La stratigraphie a été établie par le DRASSM au cours de sondages archéologiques subaquatiques. Les calages chronologiques sont basés sur le mobilier archéologique, la dendrochronologie et le radiocarbone. Les niveaux archéologiques sont particulièrement bien conservés, avec une abondance de débris végétaux (copeaux de bois, brindilles, graines,...). Ils contiennent des tessons de céramique et, ponctuellement, des restes de coquilles (gastéropodes et bivalves). Sur chaque carotte les lipides d'une vingtaine d'échantillons ont été extraits aux solvants organiques, séparés en différentes fractions chimiques et analysés par chromatographie en phase gazeuse/spectrométrie de masse.

Abstract: International audience; In order to better understand the evolution of past climate-human-environment interactions in the North-western Alps during the Holocene, we have analysed the lipid content of two cores taken from the sediments of Lake le Bourget (French Alps). By using a specific molecular biomarker of Panicum miliaceum (broomcorn millet) previously defined and a new molecular marker of soil erosion, we demonstrate that the onset of millet cultivation coincides with the onset of major soils erosion in the catchment during the Middle Bronze Age. Although archaeological and archaeobotanical investigations indicate a discrete human occupation of the lakeshores at this period, they also point to a regional change in agricultural practices that deeply affected soils. The evolution of millet cultivation appears in strong connection with climatic variations, estimated in the same cores from the variations in titanium, a proxy of hydrological changes in the region. Social and cultural triggers cannot be discarded at this stage. Such an approach applied to more sedimentary archives shows high potential to unravel the temporal and spatial dynamics of human land-use.
