In Brazil, some populations of Conyza bonariensis and C. canadensis are glyphosate resistant and there are populations of C. sumatrensis (Sumatran fleabane) presenting multiple resistance to both glyphosate and chlorimuron. During the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 seasons, growers reported failures to control Sumatran fleabane with paraquat. This study investigated the potential of paraquat resistant Sumatran fleabane populations in Paraná state, Brazil. Populations with suspected paraquat resistance were tested in the field in 2016 season. In 2017, seeds from these populations were collected, sown and grown in a greenhouse. Paraquat dose-response curve experiments were performed in Mogi Mirim, SP; Londrina, PR and Palotina, PR using doses of 0, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 g ha-1, following all standard criteria for confirmation of weed resistance cases. Percentage control was assessed at 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after application and data were fitted to a nonlinear, log-logistic model, and dose response curves were generated. The results of this study confirmed significant levels of resistance of Sumatran fleabane biotypes to paraquat with resistance factors between 3,57 to 34,29. Therefore, the first case of C. sumatrensis resistance to paraquat was confirmed in biotypes from the western area of Paraná state, Brazil. RESUMO: No Brasil, Conyza bonariensis e C. canadensis apresentam biótipos resistentes a glyphosate e C. sumatrensis apresenta resistência múltipla a glyphosate e chlorimuron. Durante as safras de 2014/2015 e 2015/2016 foram relatadas falhas no controle de buva submetida à aplicação de paraquat. Este estudo teve por objetivo investigar a possibilidade da resistência ao paraquat em populações de C. sumatrensis. Populações com suspeita de resistência foram testadas em campo na entressafra de 2016, sendo depois coletadas sementes e plantas durante a safra de 2017, que foram posteriormente, estudadas em casa de vegetação. Experimentos com curva de dose-resposta foram instalados em Mogi-Mirim, SP, Londrina-PR e Palotina-PR, utilizando doses de 0, 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1.600 e 3.200 g ha-1. Foi avaliada a porcentagem de controle aos 3, 7, 14, 21 e 28 dias após aplicação e utilizado um modelo não linear log-logístico para o ajuste da curva de dose-resposta. Com os resultados obtidos neste estudo, foi confirmada a hipótese inicial do primeiro caso de resistência da buva ao paraquat na região oeste do Estado do Paraná, com fator de resistência variando entre 3,57 e 34,29, seguindo todos os critérios para a confirmação da resistência.

In Brazil, infestations of crop areas with glyphosate-resistant (GR) sourgrass (Digitaria insularis (L.) Fedde) biotypes has risen significantly, increasing crop production costs. Glyphosate efficacy on three biotypes (GO, BA and MT) of sourgrass with suspected resistance was evaluated. A susceptible biotype (MG) was used as the control. The results confirmed that the MG and GO biotypes were susceptible to glyphosate (control > 90%). The MG biotype exhibited growth reduction and mortality by 50% (GR50 and LD50, respectively) with mean glyphosate doses of 243.7 and 431.6 g ae ha-1. The resistance index of the biotypes with suspected resistance ranged from 2.8 to 6.1 in relation to GR50 and between 1.4 to 26.7 in relation to LD50. The glyphosate susceptibility ranking of the sourgrass biotypes was MG < GO < MT < BA. The MT and BA biotypes demonstrated high glyphosate resistance levels, and the GO biotype had a high potential to develop resistance. Farmers should avoid the application of glyphosate overdoses to minimize the selection pressure on weeds. RESUMO. No Brasil, as infestações de áreas agrícolas com biótipos de capim-amargoso resistentes ao glyphosate, resultam em aumento significativo nos custos de produção das culturas. Avaliou-se a eficácia do glyphosate em três biótipos de capim-amargoso com indício de resistência (GO, BA e MT) a este herbicida. Um biótipo suscetível (MG) foi utilizado como controle. Constatou-se que os biótipos MG e GO foram suscetíveis ao herbicida (controle > 90%). O biótipo MG apresentou redução do crescimento e mortalidade em 50% (GR50 e C50, respectivamente) nas doses de glyphosate de 243,7 e 431,6 g ha-1. Os fatores de resistência dos biótipos com indício de resistência oscilaram entre 2,8 a 6,1 em relação ao GR50; e entre 1,4 e ≥ 26,7 em relação ao C50. A ordem de susceptibilidade dos biótipos de capim-amargoso foi MG < GO < MT < BA. Estes últimos apresentaram elevado nível de resistência ao glyphosate, e o biótipo GO têm potencial para desenvolvê-la. Portanto, os agricultores devem evitar a aplicação de superdose de glyphosate a fim de reduzir a pressão de seleção das plantas daninhas.

Several cases of herbicide resistance in goosegrass have been confirmed worldwide. Reports of control failures after glyphosate application have been observed, especially in the Midwest region of Paraná State. The objective of this study was to evaluate the existence of goosegrass populations resistant to glyphosate. For this, 25 populations collected in two consecutive seasons (2013/2014 and 2014/2015) were sown and grown in greenhouse. Glyphosate dose-response curve experiments were performed using doses of 0, 60, 120, 240, 480, 960, 1,920, 3,840, 7,680 and 15,360 g a.e. ha-1. The application stages were from two to three tillers (E1) for the populations of 2013/2014 and E1 and five to six tillers (E2) for the populations of 2014/2015. Furthermore, three of the populations supposedly considered resistant in these experiments (populations 7, 19 and 25) have had their F1 submitted to the herbicide dose-response test in order to verify whether the resistance was inheritable. With the results obtained in this study, it was concluded that the populations 19 and 25, from Campo Mourão and Luziânia (Midwest of Paraná) are the first confirmed cases of goosegrass resistant to glyphosate in Brazil (RF = 3.99 to 6.81), following all the criteria for confirmation of new weed resistance cases. RESUMO Diversos casos de resistência de capim-pé-de-galinha têm sido reportados mundialmente. Relatos de falhas de controle pela aplicação de glyphosate têm sido cada vez mais frequentes, especialmente na região Centro-Oeste do Paraná. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a existência de populações de capim-pé-de-galinha resistentes ao glyphosate. Para isso, 25 populações coletadas em duas safras consecutivas (2013/2014 e 2014/2015) foram semeadas e cultivadas em casa de vegetação. Experimentos de curva de dose-resposta de glyphosate foram realizados utilizando-se as doses de 0, 60, 120, 240, 480, 960, 1.920, 3.840, 7.680 e 15.360 g e.a. ha-1. O estádio de aplicação foi de dois a três perfilhos (E1) para as populações de 2013/2014 e E1 e cinco a seis perfilhos (E2) para as populações de 2014/2015. Além disso, três das populações consideradas supostamente resistentes nesses experimentos (populações 7, 19 e 25) tiveram suas gerações F1 submetidas ao ensaio de dose-resposta do herbicida, visando verificar se a resistência era herdável. A partir dos resultados obtidos neste trabalho, conclui-se que as populações 19 e 25, oriundas de Campo Mourão e Luziânia (Centro-Oeste do Estado do Paraná), constituem o primeiro relato de capim pé-de-galinha resistente ao glyphosate no Brasil (RF = 3,99-6,81), atendendo a todos os critérios estabelecidos para confirmação de novos casos de resistência.

Tolerance, also referred to as natural resistance, is a feature that exists in the plant even before herbicide application in an area. I. grandifolia, I. indivisa and I. purpurea are among the tolerant species most commonly found over fields in southern Brazil. We hypothesized that the intensive use of glyphosate results in increasing levels of tolerance to glyphosate, and in pronounced response variability in populations of the same Ipomoea species. This study aimed at identifying tolerance variations to glyphosate among I. grandifolia, I.indivisa and I. purpurea morning glory species and among populations of these species. In crops over Paraná and Santa Catarina states (Brazil) 31 biotypes were collected (20I. grandifolia, 7I.indivisa and 4I. purpurea), on which were applied 0, 216, 432, 864, 1,296, 1,728 and 2,160 g a.e. ha-1 of glyphosate and the dose required to reduce 50% of dry matter (GR50) was determined. Biotypes of all tested Ipomoea species showed variability of glyphosate tolerance. Tolerance factors had greater amplitude among biotypes of I. gradifolia and I. indivisa species (between 1.7 and 33.6 and between 3.3 and 34.2, respectively) than in I. purpurea (between 3.7 and 4.9). Especially within I. gradifolia e I. indivisa species, some biotypes required a much higher dose than the recommended one to control the wild biotype, indicating progress in the level of glyphosate tolerance; this proves the initial hypothesis of this work. RESUMO A tolerância, também referida como resistência natural, é uma característica existente na planta mesmo antes da aplicação do herbicida em uma área. As espécies de corda-de-viola I. grandifolia, I. indivisa e I. purpurea estão entre as espécies tolerantes ao glyphosate mais comumente encontradas em lavouras do Sul do Brasil. Hipotetiza-se que o uso intensivo de glyphosate incrementa os níveis de tolerância e, consequentemente, acentua a variabilidade de resposta ao herbicida em populações da mesma espécie de Ipomoea. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram identificar variações de tolerância ao glyphosate entre as espécies de corda-de-viola I. grandifolia, I. indivisa e I. purpurea e entre populações dentro de cada uma dessas espécies. Em lavouras das regiões Sudoeste do Paraná e Oeste de Santa Catarina foram coletados 31 biótipos (20 de I. grandifolia, 7 de I. indivisa e 4 de I. purpurea), nas quais foram aplicados 0, 216, 432, 864, 1.296, 1.728 e 2.160 g e.a. ha-1de glyphosate e foi determinada a dose necessária para redução de 50% da matéria seca da parte aérea (GR50). Plantas dos biótipos das três espécies de Ipomoea apresentaram variabilidade na tolerância ao glyphosate. Os fatores de tolerância apresentaram maior amplitude entre biótipos nas espécies I. grandifolia e I. indivisa (entre 1,7 e 33,6 e entre 3,3 e 34,2, respectivamente) do que em I. purpurea (entre 3,7 e 4,9). Especialmente nas espécies I. grandifolia e I. indivisa, alguns biótipos necessitaram de dose muito superior à recomendada para o controle do biótipo selvagem, indicando evolução no nível de resistência natural ao herbicida glyphosate, o que comprova a hipótese deste trabalho.

This work was carried out in order to evaluate the susceptibility to ALS-inhibiting herbicides of the Brazilian biotype of glyphosate-resistant A. palmeri, considering different chemical groups. For that, four experiments were performed, each with one of the following herbicides: glyphosate, chlorimuron-ethyl, cloransulan-methyl and imazethapyr. In each trial, treatments were organized according to a 2x8 factorial scheme, in which two were the species of Amaranthus (A. palmeri and A. spinosus) and eight were the herbicide rates (16D, 8D, 4D, 2D, D, 1/2D, 1/4D and herbicide absence; being D the commercial rate of each product). For glyphosate, D = 720 g a.e. ha-1; for chlorimuron-ethyl, D = 20 g ha-1; for cloransulanmethyl, D = 30 g ha-1; for imazethapyr, D = 100 g ha-1. Glyphosate was not applied on A. spinosus. In all the trials, the Brazilian biotype of A. palmeri had low herbicide susceptibility, so it was possible to conclude this biotype has ALS-EPSPs multiple resistance. Therefore, considering only ALS-inhibiting herbicides, this population has sulfonilurea-triazolopirimidineimidazolinone cross-resistance. RESUMO Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar a suscetibilidade do biótipo brasileiro de A. palmeri, resistente ao herbicida glyphosate, a herbicidas inibidores da ALS de diferentes grupos químicos. Para isso, quatro experimentos foram realizados, um com cada um dos seguintes herbicidas: glyphosate, chlorimuron-ethyl, cloransulan-methyl e imazethapyr. Em cada experimento, os tratamentos foram organizados em esquema fatorial 2 x 8, em que duas foram as espécies de Amaranthus (A. palmeri e A. spinosus) e oito foram as doses de herbicida (16D, 8D, 2D, 4D, D, 1/2D, 1/4D e ausência do herbicida, sendo D a dose comercial recomendada de cada produto). Para glyphosate, D = 720 g e.a. ha-1; para chlorimuron-ethyl, D = 20 g ha-1; para cloransulan-methyl, D = 30 g ha-1; e para imazethapyr, D = 100 g ha-1. Não foi aplicado glyphosate sobre A. spinosus. Em todos os experimentos, os biótipos de A. palmeri tiveram baixa suscetibilidade aos herbicidas, de modo que se pôde concluir tratar-se de um caso de resistência múltipla aos inibidores da EPSPs e ALS. Ainda, considerando somente os inibidores da ALS, conclui-se que o biótipo possui resistência cruzada às sulfonilureias - triazolopirimidinas imidazolinonas.

The repetitive use of iodosulfuron for the control of weeds in winter cereals in the south of Brazil has favored the emergence of resistant Raphanus sativus biotypes. The objective of this study was to evaluate: the response of Raphanus sativus biotypes susceptible and resistant to different dosages of iodosulfuron; the control of biotypes with alternative registered herbicides for the control of the species in crops of wheat, corn and soybean; and the existence of cross-resistance of the biotypes. Thus, four experiments were done in a greenhouse, with a completely randomized design and four replicates. The experimental units were composed of vases with a volumetric capacity of 0.75 L filled with substrate, containing a plant each. For the dose-response curve, three biotypes (factor A) and nine doses of the iodosulfuron herbicide (factor B) were used. For the alternative control, the recommendation was herbicides in pre or postemergence of the crops, and the crossed-resistance was evaluated by using herbicides that inhibit the ALS enzyme of different chemical groups. The analyzed variables were control and shoot dry matter. GR50 of the susceptible biotype (B1) was 0.11 g a.i. ha-1, whereas GR50 of resistant biotypes (B4 and B13) was 102.9 and 86.8 g a.i. ha-1 of the iodosulfuron herbicide, respectively. The resistant biotypes presented crossed resistance to herbicides that inhibit the ALS enzyme, where the control can be efficient with the use of herbicides with different action mechanisms. O uso repetido do herbicida iodosulfurom para controle de plantas daninhas em cereais de inverno no Sul do Brasil favoreceu o surgimento de biótipos de Raphanus sativus resistentes. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar: a resposta de biótipos de Raphanus sativus suscetível e resistentes a diferentes doses do herbicida iodosulfurom; o controle dos biótipos com herbicidas alternativos registrados para controle da espécie nas culturas de trigo, milho e soja; e a existência de resistência cruzada dos biótipos. Assim, foram conduzidos quatro experimentos em casa de vegetação, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições. As unidades experimentais constituíram-se de vasos com capacidade volumétrica de 0,75 L preenchidos com substrato, contendo uma planta cada. Para a curva de dose-resposta foram utilizados três biótipos (fator A) e nove doses do herbicida iodosulfurom (fator B). Para o controle alternativo, foram preconizados herbicidas na pré e pós-emergência das culturas, e a resistência cruzada foi avaliada utilizando herbicidas inibidores da enzima ALS de diferentes grupos químicos. As variáveis analisadas foram controle e massa da matéria seca da parte aérea. A GR50 do biótipo suscetível (B1) foi de 0,11 g i.a. ha-1, enquanto a GR50 dos biótipos resistentes (B4 e B13) foi de 102,9 e 86,8 g i.a. ha-1 do herbicida iodosulfurom, respectivamente. Os biótipos resistentes apresentaram resistência cruzada a herbicidas inibidores da enzima ALS, onde o controle pode ser eficiente com a utilização de herbicidas com mecanismos de ação distintos.

The effect of tannery sludge on the cellulose decomposition was studied in the laboratory as a dose-response experiment. Cellulose decomposition rates were determined by the weight loss from cellulose filter disks buried in soil samples. The amount of tannery sludge used were 0, 11, 22, 44, 88 and 172 Mg ha-1, and, corresponded, respectively, to incorporation of 250, 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 4,000 mg Cr3+ kg-1 of soil. The cellulose filter disks presented different degrees of decomposition with application of tannery sludge. After 30 days of incubation the cellulose decomposition rate, corresponding to application of 11, 22 and 44 Mg ha-1 were higher than soil untreated (control), respectively 5%, 20% and 10%, but the difference was only significant for the 22 Mg ha-1. There was a significant decrease of 50% in the cellulose decomposition, compared to untreated soil (control), with application of 172 Mg ha-1 of tannery sludge. This study has demonstrated that cellulolytic activities are susceptible to be inhibited by high rates of tannery sludge. When applied to low amounts, tannery sludge did not affect cellulose decomposition by the soil microflora.

Hormesis is a specific type of nonmonotonic dose response whose occurrence has been documented across a broad range of biological models and diverse types of exposure. The effects that occur at various points along this curve can be interpreted as beneficial or detrimental, depending on the biological or ecologic context in which they occur. Because hormesis appears to be a relatively common phenomenon that has not yet been incorporated into regulatory practice, the objective of this commentary is to explore some of its more obvious public health and risk assessment implications, with particular reference to issues raised recently within this journal by other authors. Hormesis appears to be more common than doseresponse curves that are currently used in the risk assessment process. Although a number of mechanisms have been identified that explain many hormetic doseresponse relationships, better understanding of this phenomenon will likely lead to different strategies not only for the prevention and treatment of disease but also for the promotion of improved public health as it relates to both specific and more holistic health outcomes. We believe that ignoring hormesis is poor policy because it ignores knowledge that could be used to improve public health.A hormese é um tipo específico de dose-resposta não monotônica cuja ocorrência vem sendo documentada largamente por vários modelos biológicos e para diversos tipos de exposição. Os efeitos que ocorrem em múltiplos pontos de uma curva podem ser interpretados como benéficos ou maléficos, dependendo do contexto biológico ou ecológico em que ocorram. Como a hormese parece ser um fenômeno relativamente comum que ainda não foi incorporado em práticas regulatórias, o objetivo deste ensaio é explorar algumas das suas implicações mais óbvias para a saúde pública e avaliação de risco, com ênfase particular nas questões assinaladas atualmente por autores da revista Environmental Health Perspectives. A hormese parece ser mais comum que outras curvas de dose-resposta usadas atualmente no processo de avaliação de riscos. Embora inúmeros mecanismos que explicam relações de dose-resposta desse tipo tenham sido identificados, o melhor entendimento deste fenômeno provavelmente conduzirá a diferentes estratégias de prevenção, de tratamento de doenças e de promoção de uma melhor saúde pública, posto que se relaciona com resultados de saúde tanto específicos quanto mais holísticos. Acreditamos que ignorar a hormese é praticar uma política pobre no campo da saúde pública.

O controle de plantas daninhas na linha de plantio com o uso de glyphosate é comum em áreas de florestamento de eucalipto e pinus, mas pode expor a cultura de interesse à deriva do herbicida e causar impacto sobre o crescimento inicial das mudas. O objetivo foi avaliar, comparativamente, a massa seca de plantas de pinus e eucalipto sob doses de glyphosate e verificar a ocorrência de hormese. Em plantas recém transplantadas, o herbicida glyphosate foi aplicado em doses variando de 0 a 720 g e.a. ha-1 e foi avaliada a massa seca do caule, das folhas e da parte aérea aos 30 dias após a aplicação. Pinus apresentou menor susceptibilidade para massa seca do caule (com ocorrência de hormese), enquanto eucalipto, para massa seca de folhas (com ocorrência de hormese). Pinus e eucalipto, respectivamente, apresentaram hormese de 4,1% e 4,8% para massa seca da parte aérea em doses de 8 g e.a. ha-1 e 11 g e.a. ha-1; a dose requerida para reduzir a massa seca em 50% foi de 75 g e.a. ha-1 e 108 g e.a. ha-1 e a redução da massa seca foi de 57% e 69% (com morte das plantas) quando expostas a dose de 720 g e.a. ha-1, respectivamente para pinus e eucalipto. Pinus é mais susceptível ao glyphosate que eucalipto.

The weed Borreria densiflora is a management issue in soybean and sugarcane crops from North and Northeastern Brazil. Knowledge upon chemical control of B. densiflora contributes to the integrated management of this weed species, especially when active ingredient options become reduced due to the selection of herbicide resistant or tolerant weed species. Experiments in pre- and post-emergence of B. densiflora were conducted in greenhouse, in a randomized block design and four replications. In pre-emergence, the dose-response curve methodology was used and 7 herbicides were tested. In post-emergence, 9 herbicides at the recommended rate and 4 herbicide mixtures were tested. For pre and post-emergence conditions, evaluations were conducted at 60 and 21 days after treatment (DAT), respectively, and the variables analyzed were weed control and dry weight (%). The results showed options of pre-emergent herbicides that can be used for controlling B. densiflora, especially in sugarcane, where chemical weed control is mainly based on pre-emergent applications. In the current glyphosate resistance scenario, one should consider the use of pre-emergent herbicides within an integrated management of B. densiflora. For satisfactory post-emergence control, B. densiflora plants should be sprayed at the phenological stage of up to three pairs of leaves. Herbicide mixtures have been and will continue to be an important tool in chemical weed management, broadening the spectrum of weed control, while diversifying herbicide mechanisms of action, which helps to prevent or delay the appearance of herbicide resistance. A planta daninha Borreria densiflora é uma espécie de difícil manejo em soja e cana-de-açúcar no Norte e Nordeste do Brasil. O conhecimento do manejo químico de B. densiflora contribui para o manejo integrado dessa espécie, sobretudo quando opções de ingredientes ativos se tornam reduzidas devido à seleção de plantas daninhas resistentes e tolerantes. Experimentos em pré e pós-emergência de B. densiflora foram instalados em casa de vegetação em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Em pré-emergência, a metodologia de curvas de dose-resposta foi utilizada e sete herbicidas foram testados. Em pós-emergência, nove herbicidas e quatro misturas destes foram testados. Em pré e pós-emergência, as avaliações foram feitas aos 60 e 21 dias após aplicação (DAA), respectivamente, e as variáveis avaliadas foram controle e massa seca (%) de B. densiflora. Os resultados indicaram opções de herbicidas pré-emergentes que podem ser usados para controle de B. densiflora, especialmente em cana-de-açúcar, em que o manejo químico de plantas daninhas baseia-se em aplicações pré-emergentes. Diante do fenômeno da resistência de plantas daninhas ao glyphosate, devem-se considerar os herbicidas pré-emergentes como uma ferramenta importante dentro de um programa de manejo integrado de B. densiflora. Para controle pós-emergente satisfatório, plantas dessa espécie devem ser tratadas no estádio fenológico de até três pares de folhas. As misturas de herbicidas têm sido e continuarão a ser uma importante ferramenta no controle químico de plantas daninhas, aumentando o espectro de controle de plantas daninhas e diversificando os mecanismos de ação, o que ajuda a prevenir e retardar o aparecimento da resistência à herbicidas.

Utilizaram-se dados provenientes de ensaios dose-resposta realizados na FCAV-Unesp Jaboticabal, atendendo as pressuposições de homocedasticidade e normalidade. O ajuste dos modelos foi avaliado considerando as seguintes estatísticas: coeficiente de determinação ajustado (R²adj), coeficiente de variação (CV) e soma dos quadrados dos desvios (SSD).Verificou-se que, nos modelos QP e EXP, pequenas mudanças na localização e distribuição dos níveis ocasionam grandes alterações na estimativa do OL. O modelo LRP foi influenciado pela ausência ou presença do nível intermediário às fases de resposta e estabilização (mudança da reta crescente para platô). O modelo QRP precisou de um número maior de níveis na fase de resposta e o último nível da fase de estabilização para estimar corretamente o platô. Pôde-se concluir que a determinação do OL e o ajuste dos modelos dependem da posição e quantidade de níveis, além das características específicas de cada modelo, mas níveis definidos próximos do verdadeiro requerimento e não muito espaçados são melhores para estimar corretamente o OL. The aim of this research was to evaluate the influence of the number and position of nutrient levels used in dose-response trials in the estimation of the optimal-level (OL) and the goodness of fit on the models: quadratic polynomial (QP), exponential (EXP), linear response plateau (LRP) and quadratic response plateau (QRP). It was used data from dose-response trials realized in FCAV-Unesp Jaboticabal considering the homogeneity of variances and normal distribution. The fit of the models were evaluated considered the following statistics: adjusted coefficient of determination (R²adj), coefficient of variation (CV) and the sum of the squares of deviations (SSD).It was verified in QP and EXP models that small changes on the placement and distribution of the levels caused great changes in the estimation of the OL. The LRP model was deeply influenced by the absence or presence of the level between the response and stabilization phases (change in the straight to plateau). The QRP needed more levels on the response phase and the last level on stabilization phase to estimate correctly the plateau. It was concluded that the OL and the adjust of the models are dependent on the positioning and the number of the levels and the specific characteristics of each model, but levels defined near to the true requirement and not so spaced are better to estimate the OL. The ALS-inhibiting herbicides, especially metsulfuron-methyl, are widely used for weed control, mainly wheat and barley in southern Brazil. Raphanus raphanistrum is a major weed of winter crops. However, in recent years, R.raphanistrum, after being treated with metsulfuron, has shown no symptoms of toxicity, possibly due to herbicide resistance. Aiming to evaluate the existence of R.raphanistrum biotypes resistant to metsulfuron, an experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in a completely randomized design with four replications. The plots consisted of pots with six plants. The treatments consisted of the interaction of resistant R. raphanistrum (biotype R) and susceptible R. raphanistrum (biotypes S) with ten doses of the herbicide (0.0; 0.6; 1.2; 2.4; 4.8; 9.6; 19.2; 38.4; 76.8 and 153.6 g i.a. ha-1). The application of the test herbicides occurred when the crop was at the stage of 3 to 4 true leaves. The variables analyzed were control and dry matter accumulation. Statistical analysis of dose-response curves was performed by non linear regression. Biotype S was susceptible to the herbicide even at doses below the recommended. Biotype R was insensitive to the herbicide obtaining values of resistance factor (F) higher than 85. The dose-response curve confirmed the existence of R. raphanistrum biotypes with high level of resistance to metsulfuron-methyl. Os herbicidas inibidores de ALS, especialmente metsulfuron metílico, são amplamente utilizados para controle de plantas daninhas, principalmente em trigo e cevada, no sul do Brasil. Raphanus raphanistrum é planta daninha comum em culturas de inverno. No entanto, nos últimos anos, plantas de R. raphanistrum têm sobrevivido após o tratamento com o herbicida. Com o objetivo de avaliar a existência de biótipos de R. raphanistrum resistentes ao herbicida metsulfuron, foi conduzido experimento em casa de vegetação, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições. As unidades experimentais consistiram de vasos contendo seis plantas cada. Os tratamentos constaram da interação de R. raphanistrum resistente (biótipo R) e suscetível (biótipo S) com dez doses crescentes do herbicida (0,0; 0,6; 1,2; 2,4; 4,8; 9,6; 19,2; 38,4; 76,8; e 153,6gi.a.ha-1). A aplicação do tratamento herbicida ocorreu no estádio de três a quatro folhas verdadeiras da planta daninha. As variáveis analisadas foram controle e acúmulo de matéria seca. Empregou-se regressão, utilizando modelos não lineares de ajuste da curva de dose-resposta. O biótipo S foi suscetível ao herbicida mesmo em doses abaixo da recomendada. O biótipo R foi insensível ao herbicida, obtendo valores do fator de resistência (F) acima de 85. As curvas de dose-resposta confirmaram a existência de biótipos de Raphanus raphanistrum com elevado grau de resistência ao herbicida metsulfuron metílico.

Radish has developed feral and weedy biotypes, which is a concern for agriculture around the world. In Argentina, it is one of the most widespread and troublesome crop weeds. In Brazil, this species has developed herbicide-resistance to acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS) inhibiting herbicides. The objective of this study was to record the presence of herbicide-resistant weedy radish plants in Argentina. In spring 2008, we found a small population of radish at the end of the flowering stage in an imidazolinone-tolerant canola field treated with imazethapyr. Screening and dose-response tests were conducted to two successive generations. They proved the biotype resistant status, and showed extensive survival (between 50 and 80% of control) to the application of a double dose of four AHAS‑inhibiting herbicides from two different chemical families (imidazolinones and sulfonylureas). Dose-response assays exhibited very high resistance for imazethapyr (LD50 = 2452.5 g a.i. ha-1, GR50 = 2926.9 g a.i. ha-1) and intermediate for metsulfuron (LD50 = 3.0 g a.i. ha-1, GR50 = 43.2 g a.i. ha-1). The acquisition of cross-resistance to different herbicide families would confer an adaptive and invasive advantage in agricultural environments to this biotype. Due to the herbicide rotation conducted in the field, the dispersion of this biotype was restricted. This is the first report of resistance in weedy radish in Argentina. O nabo tornou-se feral, sendo uma preocupação para a agricultura em diversas partes do mundo. Na Argentina, é uma das plantas daninhas mais difundidas e problemáticas das culturas. No Brasil, essa espécie gerou biótipos resistentes aos herbicidas inibidores de AHAS. O objetivo deste estudo foi documentar a presença de nabo-silvestre com resistência na Argentina. Na primavera de 2008, observaram-se plantas de nabo nos últimos estádios de floração em um campo de canola tolerante aos herbicidas do grupo químico das imidazolinonas, que havia recebido uma aplicação de imazethapyr. Testes de rastreio e dose-resposta foram conduzidos por duas gerações sucessivas, os quais provaram o status de biótipo resistente e mostraram alta sobrevivência (entre 50 e 80% de controle) na aplicação de dose dupla de quatro herbicidas inibidores da AHAS (duas famílias químicas diferentes: imidazolinonas e sulfonilureias). Os ensaios de dose-resposta exibiram resistência muito elevada para imazethapyr (LD50 = 2.452,5 g i.a. ha-1, GR50 = 2.926,9 g i.a. ha-1) e intermediária para metsulfuron (LD50 = 3.0 g i.a. ha-1, GR50 = 43.2 g i.a. ha-1). A aquisição de resistência cruzada para famílias de herbicidas diferentes proporcionaria uma vantagem adaptativa e invasiva em ambientes agrícolas para esse biótipo. Devido à rotação do herbicida conduzida no campo, a dispersão desse biótipo foi restringida. Esse é o primeiro relato de resistência em nabo-silvestre para a Argentina. Auxyn type herbicides such as dicamba and 2,4-D are alternative herbicides that can be used to control glyphosate-resistant hairy fleabane. With the forthcoming possibility of releasing dicamba-resistant and 2,4-D-resistant crops, use of these growth regulator herbicides will likely be an alternative that can be applied to the control of glyphosate resistant hairy fleabane (Conyza bonariensis). The objective of this research was to model the efficacy, through dose-response curves, of glyphosate, 2,4-D, isolated dicamba and glyphosatedicamba combinations to control a brazilian hairy fleabane population resistant to glyphosate. The greenhouse dose-response studies were conducted as a completely randomized experimental design, and the rates used for dose response curve construction were 0, 120, 240, 480, 720 and 960 g a.i. ha-1 for 2,4-D, dicamba and the dicamba combination, with glyphosate at 540 g a.e. ha-1. The rates for glyphosate alone were 0, 180, 360, 540, 720 and 960 g a.e. ha-1. Herbicides were applied when the plants were in a vegetative stage with 10 to 12 leaves and height between 12 and 15 cm. Hairy fleabane had low sensitivity to glyphosate, with poor control even at the 960 g a.e. ha-1 rate. Dicamba and 2,4-D were effective in controlling the studied hairy fleabane. Hairy fleabane responds differently to 2,4-D and dicamba. The combination of glyphosate and dicamba was not antagonistic to hairy fleabane control, and glyphosate may cause an additive effect on the control, despite the population resistance. Os herbicidas mimetizadores de auxinas como dicamba e 2,4-D são alternativas para o controle de buva resistente ao glyphosate. Com a possível futura liberação comercial de culturas resistentes ao dicamba e 2,4-D, a aplicação destes herbicidas reguladores de crescimento será uma provável alternativa de controle de buva resistente ao glyphosate. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi modelar por meio de curvas de dose-resposta a eficácia do dicamba e 2,4-D isolados e dicamba em associação com glyphosate para controle de uma população de buva resistente. Um estudo de doseresposta em casa de vegetação foi conduzido em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, sendo que as doses utilizadas para a construção das curvas de dose-resposta foram de 0, 120, 240, 480, 720 e 960 g i.a. ha-1de para o dicamba e o 2,4-D isolados e dicamba associado com 540 g e.a. ha-1 de glyphosate. As doses utilizadas para o glyphosate isolado foram de 0, 180, 360, 540, 720 e 960 g e.a. ha-1. Os tratamentos herbicidas foram aplicados quando asplantas estavam no estádio vegetativo de 10 a 12 folhas e altura entre 12 e 15 cm. A buva apresentou baixa sensibilidade ao glyphosate, pois não foi controlada mesmo na dose de 960 g e.a. ha-1 de glyphosate. O dicamba e o 2,4-D foram eficazes no controle da população de buva estudada. A buva responde de forma diferenciada ao 2,4-D e dicamba e será importante determinaras doses apropriadas de cada herbicida para controle de buva resistente ao glyphosate em condições de campo. A associação de glyphosate e dicamba não foi antagônica no controle da buva e o glyphosate pode causar um efeito aditivo no controle, apesar da resistência da população.

The acceptance of the concept of hormesis, a specific type of nonmonotonic dose response, has accelerated in recent years (Academie Nationale de Medecine 2005; Cendergreen et al. 2005; Kaiser 2003; Puatanachokchai et al. 2005; Randic and Estrada 2005; Renner 2003). Nonetheless, it has not been without its detractors. One article critical of the concept was published last year in Environmental Health Perspectives (Thayer et al. 2005). It provided a summary of the major points of contention and thus a convenient vehicle for us to use in responding to opposing perspectives. Although Thayer et al. (2005) tacitly acknowledged the existence of the phenomenon, they argued that no consideration should be given to hormesis in assessments of chemical risks for regulatory purposes. We disagree with their conclusion, but believe some of their points have merit—with important clarifications. We also believe that the proper understanding and utilization of hormesis will do a much better job of both protecting and promoting public health than the policy-based defaults that are currently in use. Contrary to the assertion of Thayer et al. (2005) that hormesis is rare, it is a ubiquitous natural phenomenon (Calabrese and Blain 2005). Although given many names, hormesis has been observed in the fields of medicine (Brandes 2005; Celik et al. 2005), molecular biology (Randic and Estrada 2005), pharmacology (Chiueh et al. 2005), nutrition (Lindsay 2005), aging and geriatrics (Lamming et al. 2004; Rattan 2004a, 2004b, 2004c, 2005; Sinclair et al. 2005), agriculture (Brandt et al. 2004; Shama and Alderson 2005), microbiology (Brugmann and Firmani 2005), immunology (Dietert 2005; Liu 2003), toxicology (Stebbing 2000), exercise physiology (Radak et al. 2005), and carcinogenesis (Fukushima et al. 2005)—literally, across the biological spectrum. It has also been observed in relation to disparate outcomes from the isolated single cellular process to the more holistic (e.g., growth, longevity, disease, death) that likely result from a complex interplay of multiple factors and mechanisms (Calabrese 2005d). In some fields, such as pharmacology and nutrition, these findings have been used directly or indirectly to improve human health. In others, they have been dismissed as artifacts and ignored (Calabrese 2005b). For example, certain micronutrients and vitamins can be toxic at high levels, even though low levels are essential to good health (Axelrod et al. 2004); even lower levels lead to deficiency conditions that are still problems of major public health significance in some parts of the world. Unfortunately, it is less well known that the phenomenon has also been documented for a host of other chemicals, including inorganic preservatives, antineoplastic drugs, pesticides, and various industrial chemicals (both individual agents and mixtures) (Calabrese 2005d). Mechanistic research conducted on some of these agents explains the underlying biological actions related to the respective agents at both low and high exposures (Calabrese 2005a, 2005c; Calabrese and Baldwin 2001a; Levchenko et al. 2004; Szabadi 1977). The same cannot be said about many of the policy-based defaults that are routinely used in the current risk assessment process employed for the development of occupational and environmental health policy. Especially with regard to low-level exposures, both the hypothetical shape of the curves associated with these defaults and their presumptive underlying mechanisms are based on assumptions that are largely untested or untestable.

Imazapyr has presented excellent results in controlling coppices in stand reforms of eucalypt forests, despite differences in the efficacy levels. To find out whether these different responses are caused by the genetic variability of the cultivated materials, two experiments were carried out under greenhouse conditions with different imazapyr doses in a hydroponic system in plastic vases containing 2,500 mL solution. The clones IEF-1 (Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus sp. hybrid), GE 463 (E. urophylla x E. grandis), and MN 445 (E. grandis x Eucalyptus sp. hybrid) were used in the first assay, and IEF-1, IEF2 (E. grandis x E. urophylla) x Eucalyptus sp. hybrid) and the clones 129 and 7182 (E. grandis x Eucalyptus sp. hybrids) in the second assay. Thirty days after transplanting the seedlings to a nutritive solution, imazapyr was applied to the solution at doses of 0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20, 0.40, 0.80, 1.60 and 3.20 muL L-1. Clone GE 463 proved to be more tolerant to imazapyr than clones IEF-1 and MN 445 in the first assay; however, in the second, clone 7182 was the most tolerant. Thus, doses should also be differentiated when controlling coppices, according to the cultivated clone. O imazapyr tem apresentado excelentes resultados no controle de brotações na reforma de cultivos florestais com eucalipto, porém têm sido verificados diferentes níveis de eficiência. Com o intuito de averiguar se as diferentes respostas encontradas podem ser devido à variabilidade gênica dos materiais cultivados, foram realizados dois bioensaios em casa de vegetação, utilizando diferentes doses de imazapyr, sob sistema hidropônico (solução de Clark), em vasos plásticos contendo 2.500 ml de solução. No primeiro ensaio trabalhou-se com os clones IEF-1 (híbrido de Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus sp.), GE 463 (E. urophylla x E. grandis) e MN 445 (híbrido de E. grandis x Eucalyptus sp.) e, no segundo , com IEF-1, IEF-2 (híbrido de (E. grandis x E. urophylla) x Eucalyptus sp.) e os clones 129 e 7182 (híbridos de E. grandis x Eucalyptus sp.). Trinta dias após o transplantio das mudas para solução nutritiva, fez-se a aplicação de imazapyr à solução nas doses de 0,00; 0,05; 0,10; 0,20; 0,40; 0,80; 1,60; e 3,20 miL L¹. O clone GE 463 mostrou-se mais tolerante ao imazapyr que os clones IEF-1 e MN 445, no primeiro ensaio; já no segundo, o clone 7182 foi mais tolerante. Os clones apresentaram comportamento distinto entre si quanto à presença de imazapyr em solução, indicando que para o controle de rebrota as doses também podem ser diferenciadas, de acordo com o clone cultivado.
