The quality of partnered relationships is integral to individual and family health and well-being over the life span. Significant shifts in ethno-cultural diversity, parental roles, and family life contribute to more complex partnership experiences in North American society. Drawing from a socio-cultural life course lens, we examine parental marital satisfaction/quality in later life in terms of ethnicity, socio-demographic variables (e.g., ethnic identity, gender, age, health status) and family context (e.g., presence of children at home, intergenerational relations, retirement status). Data are drawn from a sample of 454 married/partnered adults aged 50+ with a least one child aged 19–35 who reside in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, from four cultural groups: British, Chinese, Persian/Iranian, and South Asian. Using Ordinary Linear Regression, we model predictors of three dependent variables: global marital satisfaction and two sub-scales, including positive and negative emotional/cognitive appraisals of relationship quality. Several ethnic group contrasts were supported, with Chinese reporting lower global marital satisfaction than the South Asians and Persian/Iranians reporting lower levels of positive marital appraisals than the South Asians. In addition, these associations were nuanced by interactions between ethnicity and gender, revealing distinct relationships with the dependent variables. Results also support associations for several covariates. In particular, greater income satisfaction and those reporting lower conflict with their children had higher marital quality; and males and those reporting better health only had positive associations with the global marital satisfaction scale. Implications for theorizing relationship quality in later life and recommendations for those who work with culturally diverse older adults (e.g., mental health care professionals, community service providers) are discussed. Within genocide studies, a group of early scholars known as pioneers of the field made crucial contributions to genocide studies, raising the field's visibility and stature prior to its great expansion that began around the turn of the century. While recognizing the significance of the early contributions to the field, it is important that we also recognize their origins—mostly white American, European, and Anglophone men. Though the field has expanded exponentially over the last twenty years, it has not yet been determined whether such expansion has been accompanied by an increase in gender, ethnic and racial, and geographic diversity. Such diversity is essential to the advancement of key definitional, conceptual, and theoretical debates in the field. This paper surveys the field of genocide studies in order to assess the level of contributions coming from underrepresented groups and geographies while situating their contributions within the larger field of study. Le tabou linguistique est considéré comme un des obstacles que l’on peut rencontrer lors de l’enseignement de la langue étrangère notamment dans un pays multiculturel comme l’Irak. Dans cet article, nous jetons la lumière sur les expressions linguistiques et les faits sociolinguistiques jugés tabous par les étudiants du département de français d’Erbil. De même, nous montrons les types de sujets tabous ainsi que les cours dans lesquels ils apparaissent. Nous expliquons également les stratégies menées par les enseignants pour ne pas gêner leurs étudiants. Nous proposons à la fin quelques solutions pratiques pour aborder le tabou linguistique en classe de langue.

Abstract: Purpose of study: The aim of this general population study is to extend our knowledge about the HLA-A, -B, -DR and -DQ genes distribution and their diversity among the Moroccan population. Patients and methods: One hundred and ten unrelated healthy Moroccans from diverse regions of the country were included in the study. HLA typing was done either by serological (standard complement dependent microlymphocytotoxicity) and/or molecular (sequence-specific primer amplification) techniques. Results: The most frequent alleles observed were: HLA-A2 (19.1%), -A1 (10%), -A3 (10%), -B44 (9.6%), -DR3 (17.1%), -DR4 (15.3%), -DQ2 (30.6%), -DQ6 (26.4%) and -DQ3 (25%). No predominant haplotype was observed for HLA A-B while high frequency was observed for some HLA DR-DQ associations (DR3-DQ2, DR15-DQ6, DR7-DQ2, DR4-DQ3, DR13-DQ6). Comparison with neighbouring populations, on the basis of alleles, haplotypes and genetic distances, showed that Moroccan population is close to the Algerians, the Tunisians, the Spaniards and the French. The haplotype frequencies revealed also relationships with Italians, Sardinians, Basques, Portuguese and Moroccan Jews populations. Conclusion: Our results confirm and extend the current knowledge about the Moroccan genetic pattern and reflect all the ethnic diversity of the country. Iyer S., Kitson M. and Toh B. (2005) Social capital, economic growth and regional development, Regional Studies 39 , 1015–1040. This paper examines the relationships between social capital, economic performance and regional development, and it stresses the complexity and variability across space of such relationships. In contrast to the conventional macroeconomic approach of using indicators of social capital in formal growth models, what is required is a more nuanced analysis that evaluates the impact of social capital by region. To support this argument, the paper examines social capital data from the Social Capital Community Benchmark Survey 2000, which provides social capital data for more than 24 000 individuals living in 40 communities, grouped into nine regions, in the USA. These data show remarkable diversity of social capital by region. Multivariate analysis is used to examine the impact of economic and social determinants of social capital and shows that education is important for nearly all indicators of social capital, and that ethnic diversity is associated with lower levels of social capital. Furthermore, analysis indicates the need to distinguish between local and non‐local forms of social capital. The paper concludes by suggesting that future analysis of social capital will benefit from a more region‐specific approach towards examining its development and impacts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
