On the evening of 30 April 2021, a severe hailstorm swept across eastern China, causing catastrophic gale and damaging hailstones. This hailstorm event was directly caused by two mesoscale convective systems associated with strong squall lines, with mid-level cold advection from the northeast cold vortex, and strong low-level convergence associated with the low-level vortex and wind shear line. Double nesting of the high-resolution weather research and forecasting model (9–1 km) is utilized to simulate this hailstorm with five microphysics schemes. The radar-based maximum estimated size of hail (MESH) algorithm, differential reflectivity and fractions skill scores were used to quantitatively evaluate the precision. All schemes basically captured the two squall lines that swept through eastern China, although they appeared one or two hours earlier than observation. Particularly, Goddard and Thompson performed better in the MESH swath and fractions skill scores among the five different schemes. However, Thompson most realistically captured the reflectivity pattern, intensity and vertical structure of mesoscale convective systems. Its high-reflectivity column corresponded to the maximum center of the hail mixing ratio within the updraft region, which is consistent with the characteristics of a pulse-type hailstorm in its mature phase. Calibration scans are important for the maintenance of data and the quality of the information that radars output. In this study we looked for a temperature dependency in a full year's worth of differential reflectivity (ZDR) calibration scan data collected by the X- band Teaching and Research Radar (XTRRA) located near the Purdue University campus. In a vertically pointing calibration scan, the radar scans the drops from below while rotating. From this angle, the overall shape will be circular, which corresponds to a ZDR value of approximately 0 dB. To process the data for the year 2021, a Python script was written to be used by the students in Radar Meteorology (EAPS 523) as part of their Course- based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE). The ZDR mean values were then compared to the temperature data from the FAA Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) station located at the Purdue Airport in West Lafayette (KLAF). In cases where temperatures changed quickly diurnally, the ZDR mean changed inversely to temperature, a quick rise in environmental temperature corresponded to a decrease in ZDR mean relative 0 dB, and vice versa. A positive correlation of 0.79 indicated a relationship between ZDR and temperature. The XTRRA is housed in a radome and has temperature regulation via the internal air conditioning systems in Wang Hall. We speculate that there isn't a stronger relationship due to the KLAF ASOS station experiencing more solar radiation and therefore being warmer than the cooled radar, as well as the fact that XTRRA and the station are situated 3.6 km apart. Wind velocity is of great importance for weather monitoring, aviation hazard alerting, wind energy exploring, etc. Doppler radar is widely used to measure wind under rainy condition by sensing the raindrops entrained by the background wind. However, the Doppler velocity, which is a reflection of the raindrops’ velocity in radial direction, is not coincident with the background wind because of the strong inertia of raindrops. Efforts should be made to distinguish the difference between the raindrops’ velocity and the background wind velocity. In this article, we try to establish a relationship between the background wind velocity and the raindrops’ velocity by introducing a definition of the raindrops’ characteristic size, which is related to the velocity characterized by the strongest Doppler spectral component. It is found that the fusion of differential reflectivity and the depolarization ratio can serve as a good proxy for the estimation of the characteristic size. Simulation results for $S$/$C$/$X$-band radars and radar measurements verify the good performance of the proposed retrieval model for the characteristic size, which lays a solid foundation for the retrieval of the background wind velocity.

Unlike metals, graphene forms a hydration layer at the electrode/electrolyte interface, which is unusual for a conducting material. Here, the electrostatic properties of the hydration layer are studied by measuring the oscillation of ions at the interface due to an applied AC potential by differential reflectivity during cyclic voltammetry (CV). The amplitude of ion oscillation at picometer range sensitivity on a partially coated Au electrode by a graphene monolayer reveals a remarkable difference between the coated and uncoated part of the electrode. The uncoated Au electrode exhibits the expected behavior, but the oscillation of ions is completely screened over the graphene coated electrode up to 0.2 M of NaCl. The "insulating" behavior is consistent with CV and DPV. The behavior attributed to the hydration layer could be reversibly disrupted to de‐screen the electric field to study the electrostatics of graphene/Au interface. The shift in Fermi level of hydration‐layer‐free graphene/Au relative to Au is quantitatively consistent with work function transparency of graphene. The cut‐off of the emanating field from the underlying electrode in an electrolyte is another example of graphene's unique passivation property that will have profound effect on applications such as, supercapacitors where the charge state of interface is critical. A multi-radar analysis of the 20 May 2013 Moore, Oklahoma, U.S. supercell is presented using three Weather Surveillance Radars 1988 Doppler (WSR-88Ds) and PX-1000, a rapid-scan, polarimetric, X-band radar, with a focus on the period between 1930 and 2008 UTC, encompassing supercell maturation through rapid tornado intensification. Owing to the 20-s temporal resolution of PX-1000, a detailed radar analysis of the hook echo is performed on (1) the microphysical characteristics through a hydrometeor classification algorithm (HCA)—inter-compared between X- and S-band for performance evaluation—including a hail and debris class and (2) kinematic properties of the low-level mesocyclone (LLM) assessed through ΔVr analyses. Four transient intensifications in ΔVr prior to tornadogenesis are documented and found to be associated with two prevalent internal rear-flank downdraft (RFD) momentum surges, the latter surge coincident with tornadogenesis. The momentum surges are marked by a rapidly advancing reflectivity (ZH) gradient traversing around the LLM, descending reflectivity cores (DRCs), a drop in differential reflectivity (ZDR) due to the advection of smaller drops into the hook echo, a decrease in correlation coefficient (ρhv), and the detection of debris from the HCA. Additionally, volumetric analyses of ZDR and specific differential phase (KDP) signatures show general diffusivity of the ZDR arc even after tornadogenesis in contrast with explosive deepening of the KDP foot downshear of the updraft. Similarly, while the vertical extent of the ZDR and KDP columns decrease leading up to tornadogenesis, the phasing of these signatures are offset after tornadogenesis, with the ZDR column deepening the lagging of KDP.

Modeled statistical differential reflectivity–reflectivity (i.e., ZDR–Ze) correspondences for no bright-band warm rain and stratiform bright-band rain are evaluated using measurements from an operational polarimetric weather radar and independent information about rain types from a vertically pointing profiler. It is shown that these relations generally fit observational data satisfactorily. Due to a relative abundance of smaller drops, ZDR values for warm rain are, on average, smaller than those for stratiform rain of the same reflectivity by a factor of about two (in the logarithmic scale). A ZDR–Ze relation, representing a mean of such relations for warm and stratiform rains, can be utilized to distinguish between warm and stratiform rain types using polarimetric radar measurements. When a mean offset of observational ZDR data is accounted for and reflectivities are greater than 16 dBZ, about 70% of stratiform rains and approximately similar amounts of warm rains are classified correctly using the mean ZDR–Ze relation when applied to averaged data. Since rain rate estimators for warm rain are quite different from other common rain types, identifying and treating warm rain as a separate precipitation category can lead to better quantitative precipitation estimations.

The accuracy required for a correct interpretation of differential reflectivity (ZDR) is typically estimated to be between 0.1 and 0.2 dB. This is achieved through calibration, defined as the identification of the constant or time-varying offset to be subtracted from the measurements in order to isolate the meteorological signals. We propose two innovative steps: the automated selection of sufficiently homogeneous sections of Plan Position Indicator (PPI) scans at 90∘ elevation, performed in both rain and snow, and the ordinary kriging interpolation of the median ZDR value of the chosen radar volumes. This technique has been successfully applied to five field campaigns in various climatic regions. The availability of overlapping scans from two nearby radars allowed us to evaluate the calibration approach, and demonstrated the benefits of defining a time-varying offset. Even though the method has been designed to work with both solid and liquid precipitation, it particularly benefits radar systems with limited access to rain measurements due to the deployment in mountainous or polar regions or to issues affecting the lowest range gates.

Based on the preciousness and uniqueness of polarimetric radar observations collected near the landfall of Typhoon Soudelor (2015), this study investigates the sensitivities of very short-range quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPFs) for this typhoon to polarimetric radar data assimilation. A series of experiments assimilating various combinations of radar variables are carried out for the purpose of improving a 6 h deterministic forecast for the most intense period. The results of the control simulation expose three sources of the observation operator errors, including the raindrop shape-size relation, the limitations for ice-phase hydrometeors, and the melting ice model. Nevertheless, polarimetric radar data assimilation with the unadjusted observation operator can still improve the analyses, especially rainwater, and consequent QPFs for this typhoon case. The different impacts of assimilating reflectivity, differential reflectivity, and specific differential phase are only distinguishable at the lower levels of convective precipitation areas where specific differential phase is found most helpful. The positive effect of radar data assimilation on QPFs can last three hours in this study, and further improvement can be expected by optimizing the observation operator in the future

The measurement error of differential reflectivity (ZDR), especially systematic ZDR bias, is a fundamental issue for the application of polarimetric radar data. Several calibration methods have been proposed and applied to correct ZDR bias. However, recent studies have shown that ZDR bias is time-dependent and can be significantly different on two adjacent days. This means that the frequent monitoring of ZDR bias is necessary, which is difficult to achieve with existing methods. As radar sensitivity has gradually been enhanced, large amounts of online solar echoes have begun to be observed in volume-scan data. Online solar echoes have a high frequency, and a known theoretical value of ZDR (0 dB) could thus allow the continuous monitoring of ZDR bias. However, online solar echoes are also affected by low signal-to-noise ratio and precipitation attenuation for short-wavelength radar. In order to understand the variation of ZDR bias in a C-band polarimetric radar at the Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST-CDP), we analyzed the characteristics of online solar echoes from this radar, including the daily frequency of occurrence, the distribution along the radial direction, precipitation attenuation, and fluctuation caused by noise. Then, an automatic method based on online solar echoes was proposed to monitor the daily ZDR bias of the NUIST-CDP. In the proposed method, a one-way differential attenuation correction for solar echoes and a maximum likelihood estimation using a Gaussian model were designed to estimate the optimal daily ZDR bias. The analysis of three months of data from the NUIST-CDP showed the following: (1) Online solar echoes occurred very frequently regardless of precipitation. Under the volume-scan mode, the average number of occurrences was 15 per day and the minimum number was seven. This high frequency could meet the requirements of continuous monitoring of the daily ZDR bias under precipitation and no-rain conditions. (2) The result from the proposed online solar method was significantly linearly correlated with that from the vertical pointing method (observation at an elevation angle of 90°), with a correlation coefficient of 0.61, suggesting that the proposed method is feasible. (3) The day-to-day variation in the ZDR bias was relatively large, and 32% of such variations exceeded 0.2 dB, meaning that a one-time calibration was not representative in time. Accordingly, continuous calibration will be necessary. (4) The ZDR bias was found to be largely influenced by the ambient temperature, with a large negative correlation between the ZDR bias and the temperature.

For any quantitative applications that use reflectivity and/or differential reflectivity, radar observations need to be compensated for attenuation effects due to precipitation. This paper presents a robust attenuation correction system (ACS) for dual-polarization radars correcting the reflectivity factor as well as differential reflectivity profiles. The major advantage of the algorithm described in this paper is that the procedures are immune to the bias effect of reflectivity and differential reflectivity. In addition, this method is not very sensitive to the variation of temperature. The proposed ACS has been evaluated with X-band radar observations simulated from drop size distribution derived from high-resolution S-band measurements observed by the CSU-CHILL radar. The evaluation of the proposed retrieval algorithm shows that the retrieved reflectivity and differential reflectivity provide an improvement over the conventional self-consistent attenuation correction technique with the differential phase constraint. This paper focuses on a dual-wavelength technique to detect hail in convective cells from a weather airborne radar. The topic is of great interest since hailstorm is the main meteorological hazard in the context of civil aviation. Considering S, C, and X frequency bands, the question of the most efficient frequency couple is addressed by means of simulations of airborne radar observations. A convective system made of two successive rows of convective towers is first modeled. Another one extracted from a real hailstorm is then considered. It is shown that the quantity dy/dr, where r is the radial coordinate along the ray path and y is the measured differential reflectivity at two different wavelengths, is a good indicator of hail areas. This quantity, associated with the measured reflectivity at the less attenuated wavelength (i.e., the longest one), enables one to identify convective cells containing hail. It appears that the frequency couples S-X and C-X are the best ones for hail detection. In the context of civil aviation, the second one (C-X) permits one to minimize antenna size. It is shown that the scattering resonance effects in echoes from migrating birds are so strong that a 10% frequency deviation within S-band can result in more than 10-dB changes in reflectivity values. We consider weather radar measurements at simultaneous transmission and simultaneous reception of horizontal and vertical polarizations and show that the degree of polarization at simultaneous transmit (ps) is related to differential reflectivity and copolar correlation coefficient at simultaneous transmit (namely, ZDR^s and \rhohv^{s}). We evaluate the potential of degree of polarization at simultaneous transmit for weather radar applications. A method is described for adjusting the far-field polarization of an electronically steered phased-array antenna. In this method, the polarization of a small subset of array elements is switched in order to reduce far-field cross-polarization of the overall array. The technique is intended for antennas used in polarimetric radars that measure quantities such as differential reflectivity (Zdr) and specific differential phase (KDP). In particular, it is appropriate for lower cost arrays where only one transmit or receive polarization is active at a time. In such arrays, it will reduce the number of measurements needed by one-third. Analysis of the tradeoffs in the technique is presented as well as examples in hypothetical large arrays. Abstract: The reflection from an ultrathin anisotropic film on an isotropic absorbing substrate is investigated in the long-wavelength limit. The analytical expressions for the differential reflection characteristics of s- and p-polarized electromagnetic plane waves are obtained. All analytical results are correlated with the numerical solution of the reflection problem on the basis of rigorous electromagnetic theory for anisotropic medium. The possibilities of using the obtained approximate formulas for resolving the inverse problem for ultrathin anisotropic dielectric films upon absorbing substrates are discussed. This letter evaluates the consistency of rainfall drop size distribution (DSD) parameters that were estimated from attenuation-corrected X-band dual-polarization (XPOL) radar measurements with estimates from a colocated S-band dual-polarization radar (S-Pol). The DSD retrieval technique uses reflectivity and differential reflectivity, and a constrained relationship to estimate the three parameters of a ldquonormalizedrdquo gamma distribution model. The more definitive S-Pol DSD parameter estimates are used as a reference to assess the performance of the corresponding XPOL estimates for different rain-path attenuation values. Results show that XPOL attenuation-corrected profiles can provide rainfall DSD estimations that are consistent to an S-band dual-polarization radar, even in cases of moderate to high rain-path attenuation. A new methodology for correcting the reflectivity factor and differential reflectivity at C-band for rain attenuation is presented. Following a methodology already proposed for X-band, new algorithms are developed based on a full self-consistency condition, describing the interrelation between polarimetric measurements and attenuation along the rain medium. The performance of the algorithms for application to C-band dual-polarization radars is evaluated extensively using radar data collected by the Polar 55C in the Rome region (Italy). Quantitative evaluation of attenuation and differential attenuation estimates is conducted based on C-band dual-polarization observations generated from S-band radar measurements. Evaluation of the new full self-consistency algorithms shows a significant improvement in performance. Abstract: The small change in the reflectance (differential reflectance) of s- or p-polarized light from an interference film as a result of the deposition of a nanoscale insulating layer on it is investigated theoretically. Analytical relations describing the contribution of nanoscale layers to the reflectance from an interference film as function of film thickness are obtained in the long-wavelength approximation. It is shown that the utilization of interference films in reflection diagnostics through differential measurements allows a significant enhancement of the sensitivity of these techniques and also opens up new possibilities for resolving the inverse problem of determining simultaneously the optical constant and thickness of nanoscale dielectric layers. This paper experimentally and theoretically examines the scattering properties of simulated non-spherical hydrometeors including water oblates, ice oblates and ice sphere–cone-oblates, in terms of the backscattering cross-section and the differential reflectivity. The experimental measurements of the backscattering cross-sections of non-spherical hydrometeor samples were performed in the Electromagnetic Scattering Laboratory of China National Space Industrial Corporation. Meanwhile, the backscattering cross-sections have been computed with the transition (T) matrix method. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental data, showing that the calculations are consistent with the observations in general. Experimental and theoretical analyses indicate that the backscattering cross-section of non-spherical particles increases as the particle size parameter increases, and fluctuates when the sizes are larger under the effect of resonance scattering. Differential reflectivity of water oblates in natural rainfall is always greater than 0dB whereas of hailstones may be negative. There is a good linear relationship between differential reflectivity and aspect ratio of a particle. These derivations agree with the literature and can be used to identify the presence of hail particles and distinguish between plate-type and columnar-type hydrometeors. The effect of nanometer dielectric films on the differential reflection characteristics of linearly polarized light from non-absorbing materials is investigated in the long-wavelength approximation. The second-order formulas for changes in the reflectance of s- and p-polarized light caused by ultrathin layer are obtained. A detailed analysis of the influence of ultrathin film to the reflectivity of p-polarized light in the vicinity of the Brewster angle is carried out. The novel methods are developed for determining the thickness and refractive index of uniform (or the average values of refractive index of nonuniform) nanometer-scale films by differential reflectivity and ellipsometric measurements. The differential reflection characteristics for ultrathin inhomogeneous dielectric film on absorbing substrate are investigated in the long-wavelength approximation. The obtained first-order expressions for differential reflectivity and changes in the ellipsometric angles caused by ultrathin layer are of immediate interest to the solution of the inverse problem. The method to determine the averaged values (not the realistic profile) of refractive index for inhomogeneous nanometric films are shown. The novel possibilities for determining the dielectric constant and thickness of nanoscale homogeneous films by the differential ellipsometric and reflectivity measurements are developed, and a simple method to estimate whether the nanometric film is homogeneous or not is also discussed. The rain attenuation was calculated by using the Marshall and Palmer, the gamma and the Weibull raindrop-size distributions. The microwave experimental measurement data from 8.4 GHz (3.75 mm) to 312.5 GHz (0.96 mm) were compared with our calculations. The Weibull distribution has the best agreement with the measurements, especially above 100 GHz. The differential reflectivity ZDR was also calculated using these three distributions. To this end, we used the horizontal and vertical radar cross sections which were computed from Waterman's T-matrix method. Based on the preciousness and uniqueness of polarimetric radar observations collected near the landfall of Typhoon Soudelor (2015), this study investigates the sensitivities of very short-range quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPFs) for this typhoon to polarimetric radar data assimilation. A series of experiments assimilating various combinations of radar variables are carried out for the purpose of improving a 6 h deterministic forecast for the most intense period. The results of the control simulation expose three sources of the observation operator errors, including the raindrop shape-size relation, the limitations for ice-phase hydrometeors, and the melting ice model. Nevertheless, polarimetric radar data assimilation with the unadjusted observation operator can still improve the analyses, especially rainwater, and consequent QPFs for this typhoon case. The different impacts of assimilating reflectivity, differential reflectivity, and specific differential phase are only distinguishable at the lower levels of convective precipitation areas where specific differential phase is found most helpful. We report on the detection of a loss-inducing perturbation with variable localization accuracy along a test fiber based on the analysis of transmitted and reflected powers of an unmodulated continuous-wave light source. The required accuracy of localization is provided by suitable distribution of the differential reflectivity along the fiber. The localization accuracy for a strong disturbance has been estimated as ± 1.0 m along the 3.939-km single-mode test fiber and as ± 5.0 mm along a designated 10-cm fiber part for both strong and weak perturbations. The measurement error of differential reflectivity (ZDR), especially systematic ZDR bias, is a fundamental issue for the application of polarimetric radar data. Several calibration methods have been proposed and applied to correct ZDR bias. However, recent studies have shown that ZDR bias is time-dependent and can be significantly different on two adjacent days. This means that the frequent monitoring of ZDR bias is necessary, which is difficult to achieve with existing methods. As radar sensitivity has gradually been enhanced, large amounts of online solar echoes have begun to be observed in volume-scan data. Online solar echoes have a high frequency, and a known theoretical value of ZDR (0 dB) could thus allow the continuous monitoring of ZDR bias. However, online solar echoes are also affected by low signal-to-noise ratio and precipitation attenuation for short-wavelength radar. In order to understand the variation of ZDR bias in a C-band polarimetric radar at the Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST-CDP), we analyzed the characteristics of online solar echoes from this radar, including the daily frequency of occurrence, the distribution along the radial direction, precipitation attenuation, and fluctuation caused by noise. Then, an automatic method based on online solar echoes was proposed to monitor the daily ZDR bias of the NUIST-CDP. In the proposed method, a one-way differential attenuation correction for solar echoes and a maximum likelihood estimation using a Gaussian model were designed to estimate the optimal daily ZDR bias. The analysis of three months of data from the NUIST-CDP showed the following: (1) Online solar echoes occurred very frequently regardless of precipitation. Under the volume-scan mode, the average number of occurrences was 15 per day and the minimum number was seven. This high frequency could meet the requirements of continuous monitoring of the daily ZDR bias under precipitation and no-rain conditions. (2) The result from the proposed online solar method was significantly linearly correlated with that from the vertical pointing method (observation at an elevation angle of 90°), with a correlation coefficient of 0.61, suggesting that the proposed method is feasible. (3) The day-to-day variation in the ZDR bias was relatively large, and 32% of such variations exceeded 0.2 dB, meaning that a one-time calibration was not representative in time. Accordingly, continuous calibration will be necessary.
