Abstract

Understanding the impact of shaping processes on solid adsorbents is critical for the implementation of MOFs in industrial separation processes or as catalytic materials. Production of MOF-containing shaped particles is typically associated with loss of porosity and modification of acid sites, two phenomena that affect their performance. Herein, we report a detailed study on how extrusion affects the crystallinity, porosity, and acidity of the aluminium fumarate MOF with clays or SiO2 gel binders. Thorough characterization showed that the clay binders confer the extrudates a good mechanical robustness at the expense of porosity, while silica gel shows an opposite trend. The CO2 selectivity towards CH4 , of interest for natural gas separation processes, is maintained upon the extrusion process. Moreover, probe FTIR spectroscopy revealed no major changes in the types of acid sites. Abstract

This thesis reports on studies that have been carried out to better image the crustal and upper mantle shear velocity structure around the Gulf of California, Mexico. The Gulf of California forms a part of the plate boundary between the Pacific and North-American plates, where transform motion in the North converts into oceanic spreading in the South. Although currently oblique extension occurs within the gulf, in the past subduction of the oceanic Farallon plate took place along a trench west of what is currently the Baja California Peninsula. Around 12 Ma subduction and spreading ceased and the remaining parts of the Farallon plate were captured by the Pacific plate. After this the Gulf of California started to develop and around 5 Ma the Pacific-North America plate boundary shifted to its present location within the gulf. The study is subdivided into three parts. In the first part we use a spectral-element code to model seismic wave propagation and the adjoint technique to calculate finite-frequency sensitivity kernels for two-station surface wave measurements. We found a dominant sensitivity in the interstation region, close to what is assumed in the two-station method. However, we also show that anomalous structures even far from the assumed propagation path can significantly affect the measurements. To improve regional tomographic inversions using the two-station method, sensitivity kernels should therefore be taken into account. At the regional scale we are interested in this requires high computational costs, which are difficult to reach in practice. In the second part, instead of improving the lateral resolution using the method described above, we improve the vertical resolution by 1-D joint inversions of surface wave and receiver function data recorded by NARS-Baja stations. We use a Neighbourhood Algorithm to obtain shear velocity models beneath the stations. We are able to find sediment and crustal thicknesses below the stations in the area. In the upper mantle we find indications for the presence of subducted plate remnants below the middle and southern parts of the Baja California Peninsula and we identify the top as a sharp interface. The absence of plate remnants below the northern part explains why the middle and southern parts of the Baja California Peninsula move faster to the Northwest with respect to the North-American plate than the northern part. In the third part we investigate the effects of dipping crustal layers on the receiver functions. We find that azimuthal differences is the receiver function data can be explained by a westward dipping Moho below the Baja California Peninsula, and a dipping mid-crustal layer throughout the entire area. For detailed crustal imaging of the Baja California area using receiver functions more complex modelling than a 1-D inversion is recommended.

29. Molecular evidence for the mixing of meat, fish and vegetables in Anglo-Saxon coarseware from Hamwic, UK

Absorbed lipid residues from 24 seventh- to ninth-century coarseware potsherds from the major Anglo-Saxon trading centre of Hamwic (Southampton, UK) were analysed by gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC–MS) in order to reconstruct the dietary habits of its population. The results show that the vessels were used for preparing ruminant fats and leafy vegetables. In addition, evidence was found for a minor contribution of aquatic foods. Beeswax was found once and most probably relates to a sealing function or to honey. Remarkable features were: (i) the isomeric mixture of octadecenoic acid (C18:1 Δ7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16) and 8- to 16-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid, and (ii) the co-occurrence of C17:1, C19:1 and isoprenoid fatty acids. These features were proposed as biomarkers for ruminant and aquatic food sources, respectively. Furthermore, the carbonyl position distribution in mid-chain ketones was used to identify mixtures of animal- and plant-derived ketones. The paper highlights the difficulty in interpreting complex lipid signatures that show a mixture of various foods, as observed in the majority of the samples. This was linked to the preparation of stews or the recycling of vessels. The results are considered alongside ceramic usewear data and existing data relating to environmental remains recovered from the Hamwic excavations.

Abstract

Viable donor skin is still considered the gold standard for the temporary covering of burns. Since 1985, the Brussels military skin bank supplies cryopreserved viable cadaveric skin for therapeutic use. Unfortunately, viable skin can not be sterilised, which increases the risk of disease transmission. On the other hand, every effort should be made to ensure that the largest possible part of the donated skin is processed into high-performance grafts. Cryopreserved skin allografts that fail bacterial or fungal screening are reworked into 'sterile' non-viable glycerolised skin allografts. The transposition of the European Human Cell and Tissue Directives into Belgian Law has prompted us to install a pragmatic microbiological screening and acceptance procedure, which is based on 14 day enrichment broth cultures of finished product samples and treats the complex issues of 'acceptable bioburden' and 'absence of objectionable organisms'. In this paper we evaluate this procedure applied on 148 skin donations. An incubation time of 14 days allowed for the detection of an additional 16.9% (25/148) of contaminated skin compared to our classic 3 day incubation protocol and consequently increased the share of non-viable glycerolised skin with 8.4%. Importantly, 24% of these slow-growing microorganisms were considered to be potentially pathogenic. In addition, we raise the issue of 'representative sampling' of heterogeneously contaminated skin. In summary, we feel that our present microbiological testing and acceptance procedure assures adequate patient safety and skin availability. The question remains, however, whether the supposed increased safety of our skin grafts outweighs the reduced overall clinical performance and the increase in work load and costs.

Abstract

For practitioners at hospitals seeking to use natural (not genetically modified, as appearing in nature) bacteriophages for treatment of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections (bacteriophage therapy), Europe's current regulatory framework for medicinal products hinders more than it facilitates. Although many experts consider bacteriophage therapy to be a promising complementary (or alternative) treatment to antibiotic therapy, no bacteriophage-specific framework for documentation exists to date. Decades worth of historical clinical data on bacteriophage therapy (from Eastern Europe, particularly Poland, and the former Soviet republics, particularly Georgia and Russia, as well as from today's 27 EU member states and the US) have not been taken into account by European regulators because these data have not been validated under current Western regulatory standards. Consequently, applicants carrying out standard clinical trials on bacteriophages in Europe are obliged to initiate clinical work from scratch. This paper argues for a reduced documentation threshold for Phase 1 clinical trials of bacteriophages and maintains that bacteriophages should not be categorized as classical medicinal products for at least two reasons: (1) such a categorization is scientifically inappropriate for this specific therapy and (2) such a categorization limits the marketing authorization process to industry, the only stakeholder with sufficient financial resources to prepare a complete dossier for the competent authorities. This paper reflects on the current regulatory framework for medicines in Europe and assesses possible regulatory pathways for the (re-)introduction of bacteriophage therapy in a way that maintains its effectiveness and safety as well as its inherent characteristics of sustainability and in situ self-amplification and limitation.

Abstract

Encoded fluorescent particles are fabricated through the selective uptake of dyes in photopatterned metal–organic framework single crystals. The concept is based on spatially controlled photochemical cleavage of pore-blocking pendant groups.
