O objetivo deste estudo é compreender que a construção da identidade por meio da imagem faz parte da linguagem cotidiana em um contexto cultural visual. A imagem pode ser relida como parte de uma identidade visual voltada ao consumo, conforme Lefebvre, e publicizada como mercadoria, em uma perspectiva historiográfica das práticas cotidianas de subjetivação. Articulamos que a imagem expressa uma linguagem capaz de compor e publicizar a identidade nas plataformas sociais, que esta representação pode se comportar como mercadoria e que a constante releitura dos modos de expressão social é importante para a conformação da imagem histórica que a sociedade faz de si mesma. Observamos ainda que a performatividade de si, mediada por e limitada às possibilidades vernaculares das plataformas, cria maneiras de existir e se mostrar que alteram as práticas de sociabilidade. Com isso, apontamos o papel historiográfico dos estudos visuais para pensar a produção ideológica imagética nas construções narrativas da sociedade pictórica.

Both selol and MNPs were co-encapsulated within poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanocapsules for therapeutic purposes. The PLGA-nanocapsules loaded with MNPs and selol were labeled MSE-NC and characterized by transmission and scanning electron microscopy, electrophoretic mobility, photon correlation spectroscopy, presenting a monodisperse profile, and positive charge. The antitumor effect of MSE-NC was evaluated using normal (MCF-10A) and neoplastic (4T1 and MCF-7) breast cell lines. Nanocapsules containing only MNPs or selol were used as control. MTT assay showed that the cytotoxicity induced by MSE-NC was dose and time dependent. Normal cells were less affected than tumor cells. Cell death occurred mainly by apoptosis. Further exposure of MSE-NC treated neoplastic breast cells to an alternating magnetic field increased the antitumor effect of MSE-NC. It was concluded that selol-loaded magnetic PLGA-nanocapsules (MSE-NC) represent an effective magnetic material platform to promote magnetohyperthermia and thus a potential system for antitumor therapy.Keywords: PLGA-nanocapsule, cancer, maghemite nanoparticle, MTT, drug delivery, selenium

An adult female black-eared opossum (Didelphis aurita) was found in the city of Guarulhos, Brazil, and was sent to veterinary care for clinical examination and future rehabilitation. In the physical exam, it was possible to verify mobility between the hemimandibles. The animal was submitted to the anesthetic procedure for a complete oral exam, intraoral radiography, and possible surgical intervention. The opossum was diagnosed with mandibular symphysis disjunction, needing surgery. The technique chosen was the labial locking system with buttons and cerclages. After the procedure, the animal was sent to the environmental organs for rehabilitation. After 40 days, the locking system was removed showing a complete healing of the mandibular symphysis. The animal was reintroduced to nature within 45 days of the procedure.

Objective: The proposed study aims to present the experience with radical cystectomy from a urology service in a public teaching, non-profit hospital with a medical residency service, during the COVID-19 pandemic period in 2020. Materials and methods: We led a prospective study from February 2020 to October 2020, in which three 2nd-year urology residents, guided by one particular attending physician, performed 20 radical cystectomies in an acute public hospital. Results: Most patients were male, with Muscle-invasive bladder cancer being the major indication in our sample. There was a meaningful and direct correlation between surgical time and length of stay in the Intensive Care Unit. Conclusion: Despite the complexity of the surgery, the execution of radical cystectomies during a pandemic period is feasible, with positive surgical results and complication rates compatible with the current literature.

Abstract The electrical conductivity σ has been calculated for p-doped GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As and cubic GaN/Al0.3Ga0.7N thin superlattices (SLs). The calculations are done within a self-consistent approach to the k → ⋅ p → theory by means of a full six-band Luttinger-Kohn Hamiltonian, together with the Poisson equation in a plane wave representation, including exchange correlation effects within the local density approximation. It was also assumed that transport in the SL occurs through extended minibands states for each carrier, and the conductivity is calculated at zero temperature and in low-field ohmic limits by the quasi-chemical Boltzmann kinetic equation. It was shown that the particular minibands structure of the p-doped SLs leads to a plateau-like behavior in the conductivity as a function of the donor concentration and/or the Fermi level energy. In addition, it is shown that the Coulomb and exchange-correlation effects play an important role in these systems, since they determine the bending potential.

This work proposes a reliable leakage detection methodology for water distribution networks (WDNs) using machine-learning strategies. Our solution aims at detecting leakage in WDNs using efficient machine-learning strategies. We analyze pressure measurements from pumps in district metered areas (DMAs) in Stockholm, Sweden, where we consider a residential DMA of the water distribution network. Our proposed methodology uses learning strategies from unsupervised learning (K-means and cluster validation techniques), and supervised learning (learning vector quantization algorithms). The learning strategies we propose have low complexity, and the numerical experiments show the potential of using machine-learning strategies in leakage detection for monitored WDNs. Specifically, our experiments show that the proposed learning strategies are able to obtain correct classification rates up to 93.98%. HIGHLIGHTS Leakage detection in water distribution networks using efficient machine-learning strategies.; We analyze pressure measurements from pumps in district-metered areas in Stockholm, Sweden, where we consider a monitored subarea of the water distribution network.; Our proposal can be applied to leakage detection scenarios where we have access to water pressure measurements at different points of the WDN.;

Summary: Inspiration is the inexorable active phase of breathing. The brainstem pre-Bötzinger complex (preBötC) gives rise to inspiratory neural rhythm, but its underlying cellular and ionic bases remain unclear. The long-standing “pacemaker hypothesis” posits that the persistent Na+ current (INaP) that gives rise to bursting-pacemaker properties in preBötC interneurons is essential for rhythmogenesis. We tested the pacemaker hypothesis by conditionally knocking out and knocking down the Scn8a (Nav1.6 [voltage-gated sodium channel 1.6]) gene in core rhythmogenic preBötC neurons. Deleting Scn8a substantially decreases the INaP and abolishes bursting-pacemaker activity, which slows inspiratory rhythm in vitro and negatively impacts the postnatal development of ventilation. Diminishing Scn8a via genetic interference has no impact on breathing in adult mice. We argue that the Scn8a-mediated INaP is not obligatory but that it influences the development and rhythmic function of the preBötC. The ubiquity of the INaP in respiratory brainstem interneurons could underlie breathing-related behaviors such as neonatal phonation or rhythmogenesis in different physiological conditions.

In this work, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was employed to produce a Mesoporous Composition of Matter-48 Modified (MCM-48-M or MCM-48-PVA). After surface modification, MCM-48-M was used to produce nanocomposite (NC) films with polycaprolactone (PCL) as a matrix at room temperature. PCL and MCM-48 nanoparticles (NPs) were chosen due to their great biocompatibility and low toxicity. However, MCM-48-M is more compatible with PCL than MCM-48. NC films were sterilized by gamma radiation with a dose of 25 kGy and characterized by experimental techniques to investigate their chemical, mechanical (tensile) and thermal properties. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) results indicated that MCM-48-M exhibited a random distribution in the PCL matrix. The PCL chemical structure was preserved in NC films as described by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy as well as the tensile and thermal properties of NC films. FT-IR and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results showed surface modification. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that crystalline symmetries were preserved and the crystallinity of NC films had small variations in all samples before and after irradiation, respectively. But, our results did not indicate major changes showing that this method is successful for the sterilization of PCL/MCM-48-PVA NC films.

The textile industry is one of the largest in the world, being of a great economical impact in many countries. The high water consumption and large effluents production with high concentrations of chemical products and residual dyes are amongst the industry’s biggest environmental impacts. The application of biosurfactants (BS) in many processes in this industry is already established. However, its exploration in the effluent treatment stages can still be improved. Natural surfactants have diverse structure, are biodegradable, biocompatible, selective, and have good stability. They can be greatly explored in filtering processes. Bacterial cellulose (BC), a high purity biopolymer, is formed by a three-dimensional (3D) nanofibrillar network, with high water absorption capacity and high tensile strength. The present study aimed to evaluate, individually and in combination, the use of BS and BC both produced in media supplemented with industrial waste, aiming for its application in the treatment of textile effluents. The tests were carried out with synthetic effluents with navy blue dye at concentrations between 7.5 – 30.0 mg/L. BS was added to the effluent in the critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 1x CMC, 3 x CMC and 10 x CMC, to observe the agglutinating action. The BC pellicle with approximate thickness of 3 mm was evaluated as a filtering element. The color removal index of the treated effluent was determined through spectrometry as the parameter of effectiveness. The results showed an efficiency in color removal of up to 45 % solely with BC as a filtering agent and of 65 % when treated with BS before filtration with BC. The results demonstrate the potential of reducing the color parameter with the BS/BC association for a low-cost and sustainable filtration system to be applied in textile effluent treatment.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a natural polymer synthesized in a pure manner by different kinds of microorganisms. It is a material with a three-dimensional (3D) nanofibrillary network that has interesting chemical and mechanical properties. Due to its high polymeric degree and its characteristics, it can be applied in several technological fields, such as filtration membranes, packages, cosmetics, textile, and other industries. The usage possibility of agro-industrial residues as alternative nutrients source is a great economic advantage to not only lower BC production costs but also to improve its yield and diminish the disposal of such residues. This work used the bacteria Komagataeibacter hansenii UCP1619, which was cultivated on alternative cultivation media, which were modified based on the standard media Hestrim-Schramm (HS). The best media was selected according to its cost benefit and BC’s growth yield. The pellicles were obtained after 14 days incubation time. Flexibility and water holding capacity were calculated. It can be concluded that the production media modification with tomato extract resulted in a cost reduction of 76% on the used liquid media, with a great biocellulose production. This modification is ideal for its use in applications that require a denser fiber distribution, such as in emulsified effluent filtrations.
