Human rights instruments are but one of many legal advocacy tools used by trans people. Recent legal scholarship emphasizes that human rights laws are not sufficient to address legal challenges facing trans people, particularly intersectional and systemic barriers. This article looks to Canadian trans case law outside of human rights law to reveal the many instances in which trans people's fight for legal recognition and redress occur outside of the human rights arena. It focuses on trans case law in three areas: family law, the use of name and gender in court, and access to social benefits. Canadian trans jurisprudence illustrates that not only are trans legal strategies outside of human rights plentiful and effective, they are also imperative. An agile and pragmatic approach to trans rights is necessary, particularly when minority rights are under threat, and for trans people on the margins of trans law reforms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ALTERNATIVE convictions (Law) , *DETENTION of persons , *CRIMINAL sentencing , *PRE-trial procedure - Abstract
Currently in Canada, there are more legally innocent people in custody in provincial/territorial prisons than there are sentenced prisoners. This group, known as remand prisoners, constituted 37% of the total prison population – federal and provincial/territorial – in Canada in 2015. Despite growing public attention and legal awareness of the remand problem, little is known about the human costs of pre-trial detention. I outline some of these costs to individuals through a discussion of three distinctive dimensions of remand imprisonment: arrest, court appearances, and daily life in custody. Based on interviews with 120 remand prisoners (60 male, 60 female) at four maximum-security provincial prisons in Ontario, I demonstrate that the system imposes many punishments on individuals long before – and often in the absence of – conviction. The consequences of remand custody have implications for our understanding of the nature of punishment before conviction and for contemporary legal debates in Canada on the issue of pre-trial credit. The number of students in Brazilian higher education has increased dramatically in the recent period. However, evasion has been high and object of study by several researchers. This work brings a new look at the problem, analyzing the return of students who have dropped out from higher education with the microdata of the Higher Education Census from 2009 to 2017. The results show that a large part of the students who dropped out of higher education later returned to higher education and, although they did not return to programs from the same higher education institution, most of them returned to the same area of the originally dropped out program. In addition, programs in the area of Business and Administration are an important destination when students who have dropped out from higher education return, regardless of their area of origin.

ENVIRONMENTAL engineering , *GRADUATE education , *STUDENTS , *ENGINEERS , *PUBLIC health , *EDUCATION - Abstract
Environmental engineering education has been an active option for engineers from all disciplines for nearly 50 years at the graduate level. Some graduate programs expanded to integrate students with undergraduate science degrees with the engineering programs, since the cross discipline interaction is required outside the academic programs. In the mid-1980s interest increased to such a level that undergraduate programs began to form. Several of these programs have been accredited in their various forms recognizing the diversity of the field and those presenting the programs. The progression from graduate-degree-based specializations to broad-based undergraduate programs reflects both the increased knowledge in the field and the increased demand for professional engineers capable of responding to public health and environmental protection issues. Graduate programs greatly expand fundamental knowledge of physical, chemical, and biological processes and their application to protection problems. Of course, the doctorate is dedicated to the development of significant new knowledge. This paper defines several of the basic components of the environmental engineering profession and the educational process needed to produce qualified environmental engineers. Key words: environmental engineering, education, courses, undergraduate environmental engineering, graduate environmental engineering. International audience; Environment preservation is an important issue for this century and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a relevant methodology to tend towards cleaner production and sustainable development. The LCA training of the new generation of engineers is imperative. But teaching LCA is a hard task principally because of the lack of time to go into LCA methodological key points in depth and to carry out a sufficiently complex LCA case study to apprehend interest and limits of the use of this methodology. In AgorAcv network (network of scientists and consultants in LCA at Western France) a working group of six teachers shares educational approaches and tools to teach LCA. We analyse the different ways of teaching LCA in AgorAcv network. This analysis of the nineteen courses of these six teachers shows some similarities and some discrepancies as original ideas to teach LCA.

This book explores the perceived paradigmatic conflict within British classical economics between the so called 'Ricardo School' and the contemporary French Economics of Jean-Baptiste Say. Samuel Hollander provides the reader with extensive evidence, utilizing all editions of Say's main texts and his lesser-known writings in order to demonstrate his adherence to much of Ricardian theory. This intriguing book focuses on selected doctorinal issues and surrounding debates, and will interest all serious historians of economic thought, finding a place on the bookshelves of many economists across the world.

Within the framework of a research aiming at measuring the impact of the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in scientific higher education, we carried out a study with 108 students (40 men and 68 women) coming from various establishments of scientific higher education. The objective of this study is double. It will allow on the one hand, to determine the perceptions of these students towards the use of the ICT during the session of course and practical works (PW); in addition, to identify the most appreciable teaching mode (traditional, integrating the ICT or hybrid) for a better learning of sciences within the university. The results of our investigation show that the integration of ICT in scientific courses and PW is beneficial for the majority of the students and can improve the quality of their learning. However, to help the students in difficulty and to bring more effectiveness during the sessions of teaching, these tools should be used in appropriate techno teaching situations where other teaching materials are also exploited.
