The history of material conservation, still little studied today, could enrich the field of the history of book from a complementary point of view based on the archaeological approach. The example of the library of chained books at the Collège de Sorbonne particularly well documented for the Medieval and early Modern periods, enables the reconstitution of the material history of a specific work, by gathering material clues, various inscriptions and current academic work, and in doing so to better comprehend our predecessors’ choices regarding the conservation of books. This approach aims to better understand the Past in order to adapt more finely our future conservation-restoration treatments for complex objects., L’histoire de la conservation matérielle, encore très peu étudiée aujourd’hui, pourrait enrichir le champ de l’histoire du livre d’un point de vue complémentaire, axé sur l’approche archéologique. L’exemple de la bibliothèque enchaînée du collège de Sorbonne, particulièrement bien documentée pour la période médiévale et le début de l’époque moderne, permet de reconstituer le parcours matériel d’un ouvrage spécifique, en regroupant indices matériels, inscriptions diverses et travaux académiques en cours et, ce faisant, de mieux appréhender les choix de nos prédécesseurs en matière de conservation des livres. Cette démarche vise à mieux comprendre le passé afin d’adapter plus finement nos traitements futurs de conservation-restauration sur des objets complexes.

This paper describes a process started in 2011 with the use of the “mist lining” technique for a large painting by Titian, conserved in Venice uncontrolled environment. After several experiences with a specific version of the method, Valerio Garofalo’s research thesis helped the standardisation of lining procedures aiming to obtain predictable, reproducible results. This was achieved through the production of a large quantity of mock-up painting linings and samples for peel tests. The bond created with a viscoelastic adhesive appears stronger with high speed testing, if compared with the same at a lower speed, but literature shows high variability of peel speeds. Preliminary tests with different speeds for Plextol B500 allowed to compare results with literature data. The study gives a deeper understanding of the mechanisms involved in adhesion when lining with this method. Cet article décrit un processus qui a débuté en 2011 avec l'utilisation de la technique du "mist lining" pour un grand tableau de Titien, conservé à Venise dans un environnement non contrôlé. Après plusieurs expériences, la thèse de recherche de Valerio Garofalo a contribué à la standardisation des procédures de doublage visant à obtenir des résultats prévisibles et reproductibles. Ceci a été réalisé grâce à la production d'une grande quantité de maquettes et d'échantillons de peinture pour les tests de pelage. L'adhérence créée avec un adhésif viscoélastique semble plus forte lors d'essais à grande rapidité. Des essais préliminaires à différentes vitesses pour le Plextol B500 ont permis de comparer les résultats avec les données de la littérature. L'étude permet d'approfondir la compréhension des mécanismes impliqués dans l'adhérence lors de l'application de cette méthode.

Les objets composites historiques sont constitués d’une large série de matériaux organiques et/ou inorganiques. Ils sont souvent fragiles en raison de la nature des matériaux utilisés et de leur état de dégradation avancé. Leurs conditions de conservation doivent faire l’objet d’un choix réfléchi afin de ralentir leur dégradation. Chaque matériau ayant ses exigences spécifiques, il est difficile de donner des recommandations de conservation préventive. Pour appuyer la décision, une approche basée sur la gestion des risques est développée. La méthodologie proposée (1) offre une base objective pour dégager des compromis concernant les conditions de préservation et (2) permet la comparaison de différents scénarios afin de sélectionner le plus approprié. Dans un premier temps, la méthodologie est expliquée de manière théorique. Une étude de cas sur un jardin clos médiéval permet ensuite d’illustrer ces deux aspects. Historical mixed-media objects consist of a wide range of materials that can be organic and inorganic in nature. They are often fragile due to the nature of the materials used, and their advanced state of degradation. Well-considered preservation conditions are needed to slow down their degradation. Since each material has its specific requirements, it is challenging to give preventive conservation recommendations. To support the decision making, a risk-based approach is developed. The proposed methodology (1) offers an objective basis to define compromises in preservation conditions, and (2) allows the comparison of different scenarios in order to select the most appropriate one. The methodology is first explained theoretically. Subsequently, its two application aspects are illustrated on the basis of a case study regarding the preventive conservation of a medieval Enclosed Garden.

L’article analyse de manière critique les techniques de facing et la description d’un système novateur fondé sur l’usage de supports temporaires réhumidifiable qui vont permettre d’obtenir une protection superficielle avec une force de liaison appropriée et facilement réversible. Cet article comprend aussi la description de la première partie expérimentale de l’enquête, focalisée sur l’évaluation des caractéristiques des différentes catégories de matériaux (adhésifs et supports temporaires) et leur combinaison pour la réalisation de supports temporaires réhumidifiable. This paper includes a critical review of the most commonly used facing techniques and a description of an innovative system based on the use of remoistenable temporary supports which allows superficial protection with adequate bond strength and easy reversibility. The article describes the part of the research focused on the evaluation of the characteristics of a selection of adhesives and temporary supports and their compatibility for developing of remoistenable temporary supports suitable for the protection of canvas paintings.

The Conservation and Restoration Division at the Bern University of the Arts is reorganizing its curriculum, following its strategic plan launched in 2014. One of the goals is to strengthen the links between education and research. Several steps were undertaken to achieve this aim. These steps extend from a series of presentations on recent research topics to a joint research course at Master level. La section "conservation et restauration" de la Haute Ecole des Arts de Berne est occupée à réorganiser le programme d’études selon un plan stratégique, qui a été lancé en 2014. Un des buts principaux est de renforcer les liens entre l’éducation et la recherche. Plusieurs étapes ont été entreprises pour atteindre cet objectif. Elles concernent une série de présentations de sujets de recherches actuelles jusqu’à la création d'un cours spécialisé en recherche équivalent au niveau master.

Pendant des années, la Teoria del Restauro de Cesare Brandi a exercé la plus grande influence sur la théorie de la conservation-restauration dans le sud de l'Europe comme en Amérique Latine. Cependant, certains défauts apparaissent directement aux lecteurs. En premier lieu, le texte est extrêmement obscur; et secondement, il comporte des assertions contradictoires. Ceci rend le statut cultuel qu'il a atteint, extrêmement fascinant. Une explication pourrait être que l'ouvrage est vu comme un fétiche, un texte quasi biblique, et comme tel, sa capacité à inspirer est devenue plus importante que sa justesse. For many years, Cesare Brandi’s Teoria del restauro has been one of the most influential works on heritage conservation theory in Southern Europe and in Latin America. However, it has shortcomings that are immediately apparent to the reader: firstly, it is extremely obscure; and secondly, it makes contradictory assertions. This makes the near-cult status that it has achieved all the more fascinating. One explanation for this status might be because the work is seen as a “fetish” or an “almost-biblical” text, and as such, its ability to inspire has become more important than its intellectual soundness.

Depuis le xviie siècle, le canal du Midi connaît des conflits d’usage et des paysages forts différents. Actuellement, les Voies Navigables de France (VNF) comme la population locale et les touristes se confrontent à une crise paysagère et environnementale majeure. La disparition des platanes centenaires à cause du champignon et de l’épidémie du chancre coloré est inéluctable. Cette crise bouleverse les niveaux d’information et de perception d’un espace touristique de première importance pour la France avec une inscription au patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco en 1996. Les arbres sont un marqueur d’une identité paysagère et de représentations touristiques très fortes. À partir d’une recherche archivistique inédite portant sur l’évolution du paysage et de l’action des acteurs, couplée à une enquête de terrain entre 2008 et 2013 sur le comportement des touristes et des promeneurs, nos résultats montrent que l’action de protection et de conservation de ce paysage rentrent dans une alliance renouvelée entre le tourisme de masse et le tourisme responsable, ils en deviennent interdépendants. La communication et la pédagogie environnementale auprès du grand public sur le degré de nature de ce site rentrent aussi dans une action à son tour résiliente et de développement durable, les ambivalences des comportements des usagers dans leur vision d’un site touristique hybride s’observent. Since the seventeenth century, the canal du Midi known conflicts of use and a variety of landscapes. Currently, Waterways of France (VNF) as the local population and tourists are confronted with a major landscape and environmental crisis. The disappearance of the old plane because of the fungus and the epidemic of colored canker is inevitable. This crisis disrupts levels of information and perception of a tourist area of prime importance for France with an inscription on the World Heritage by UNESCO in 1996. Trees are a marker of landscape identity and tourist representations very strong. From unprecedented archival research on the changing landscape and action actors, coupled with fieldwork between 2008 and 2013 on the behavior of tourists and walkers, our results show that the action of protection and conservation of the landscape fit into a renewed relationship between mass tourism and alternative tourism alliance, they become interdependent. Communication and environmental education to the public on the state of nature of this site are also included in an action to turn its resilient and sustainable development, the ambivalences of user behavior in their vision of a hybrid attraction are observed. La desaparición de los plátanos por el champiñón y la epidemia del cancro colorido es inevitable. Esta crisis altera los niveles de información y la percepción de una zona turística de gran importancia para Francia con una inscripción en el Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1996. Los árboles son un marcador de la identidad del paisaje y representaciones turísticas muy fuertes. De investigación de archivo original sobre la evolución del paisaje y la acción de los actores, junto con el trabajo de campo entre 2008 y 2013 en el comportamiento de los turistas y caminantes locales, nuestros resultados muestran que la acción de protección y conservación de la forma del paisaje en una renovada relación y la alianza entre el turismo de masas y el turismo alternativo, se vuelven interdependientes. Comunicación y educación ambiental al público sobre el estado de la naturaleza de este sitio se incluyen en una acción para activar su desarrollo resiliente y sostenible, las ambivalencias de comportamiento de los usuarios en su visión de un sitio turístico híbrido se observan.

Throughout his life Marijnissen has often advocated the significance art education as an important aspect of a museum’s mission. He even provided some valid suggestions as to how the public can be enticed to engage more closely with a museum. In this article we get an insight into Marijnissen’s views on museum education and his answers to the question: how to safeguard the museum collection in the minds of humanity? Marijnissen a souvent préconisé l'éducation à l'art comme un des aspects les plus importanst de la mission d'un musée. Il a même fourni quelques suggestions sur la façon dont le public peut être appelé à s'engager plus étroitement avec celui-ci. Dans cet article, nous donnons un éclairage quant aux opinions de Marijnissen sur l'éducation au musée et évoquons quelques unes de ses réponses à la question fondamentale: comment maintenir et sauvegarder les collections de musées parmi les goûts et aspirations de l'humanité?

L’Antiphonaire d’Oosteeklo, conservé à la bibliothèque du Musée des Beaux-Arts de Gand, a peu retenu l’attention des historiens d’art, en dépit de son importance pour l’histoire de l’enluminure flamande. Un remarquable colophon révèle l’identité de sa commanditaire, Quentine de Mastaing, abbesse des cisterciennes d’Oosteeklo ; il donne le nom de deux copistes et l’année de réalisation du manuscrit (1498). Ses scènes historiées aussi peuvent être rattachées à une enlumineresse documentée : la fameuse Cornelia van Wulfschkercke, carmélite de Sion à Bruges, à qui un œuvre assez important a pu être donné. Cette nouvelle attribution est l’occasion de présenter deux autres manuscrits peints par la même main et d’examiner la validité d’une identification qui reste, à ce stade des recherches, une hypothèse de travail. Despite its importance for the history of Flemish book painting, the Oosteeklo Antiphonal, kept at the library of the Ghent Museum of Fine Arts, has been largely neglected by art historians. A remarkable colophon discloses the identity of its patroness, Quentine de Mastaing, abbess of the Cistercian convent of Oosteeklo. It also mentions the name of the two scribes and the year of completion of the manuscript (1498). Moreover, the historiated initials can be related to a documented artist: the celebrated Cornelia van Wulfschkercke, Carmelite of the Sion convent in Bruges, to whom an important body of works has been attributed. Two other manuscripts by the same hand are presented, an ideal opportunity to assess the validity of an identification that remains, at this stage of research, a working hypothesis.

Celui-ci se caractérise par un changement de paradigme, une amélioration qualitative en termes de théorie et de méthodologie, en raison d'une meilleure situation légale et de l'extension du concept de monument historique, en ce compris compris des exemples aussi modestes que des habitations domestiques et des fermes. This recent chapter of conservation history can illustrate the improvement in the preservation of built heritage in Germany in the 70s. It was characterized by a paradigm change, with a remarkable increase of quality in theory and methodology, due to a better legal situation and to a broader concept of historical monument, including also modest examples of dwellings and farmhouses.

During the current conservation of the Ghent Altarpiece, carried out by a team of KIK-IRPA, a large amount of old overpaint has been discovered. These are studied with a number of innovative analytical techniques. It is argued here that the introduction of these techniques allows for a re-evaluation of the conservation theoretical and ethical dimensions of coping with such phenomena. Pendant la conservation-restauration actuelle du Retable du Gand, effectuée par une équipe de l'IRPA, on a découvert un grand nombre de surpeints anciens. Ceux-ci sont étudiés par le biais d'un certain nombre de techniques analytiques novatrices. Il est discuté ici que l'introduction de ces techniques réclame une re-évaluation des dimensions théoriques et éthiques de la conservation-restauration pour faire face à de tels phénomènes.

The Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation oral history archive, which began in 1975, contains almost 300 interviews with pioneer conservators, conservation scientists, and art historians. Technical examination and technical art history, as exemplified by Roger H. Marijnissen’s publications, has undergone many changes since the 1950s; this article briefly surveys the field, focusing on the examination of easel paintings, with the aid of voices and personal observations from the interviews available in the international oral history archive of the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation. La Fondation de l'Institut américain de Conservation pour les archives de la tradition orale (Foundation of American Institute for Conservation - oral history archive), qui a débuté ses travaux en 1975, rassemble près de 300 entretiens avec des conservateurs pionniers, des scientifiques de la conservation et des historiens de l'art. Examens techniques et histoire de l'art technique, comme donnés en exemple par Roger H. Marijnissen dans ses publications, ont subi beaucoup de changements depuis les années 1950; cet article examine brièvement ce champ, se concentrant sur l'examen de peintures de chevalet, par le biais des observations personnelles et des entretiens disponibles dans les Archives de Tradition orale internationales de la Fondation de l'Institut américain pour la Conservation.

Extensive practice in the conservation work on original works of art should be one of the main objectives of the training of future conservator-restorers. The current curriculum at the Faculty of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art, Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw maintains a relative balance between theory and practice, but it is not flexible enough and being not yet fully adapted to today's challenges in the field of care of cultural heritage. It is going to be reformed in the coming years, with the new curriculum also meeting current requirements in the legislation on higher education in Poland. La pratique devrait être l'un des principaux objectifs dans la formation des futurs conservateurs-restaurateurs et elle devrait être appliquée sur des oeuvres originales. Le programme d'études actuel de la faculté de la conservation et de la restauration des oeuvres d'art de l'Académie des beaux-arts de Varsovie maintient un équilibre relatif entre la théorie et la pratique. Il n'est cependant pas assez souple et pas entièrement adapté aux défis d'aujourd'hui dans le domaine de la conservation du patrimoine culturel. Il va être réformé dans les années à venir, avec le nouveau programme d'enseignement prenant en compte les exigences actuelles dans la législation de l'enseignement supérieur en Pologne.

L’empreinte et la contre-empreinte d’Urolophus crassicaudatus, confisquées par Napoléon Bonaparte pendant la première campagne d’Italie, sont depuis conservées au Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle. Notre étude de la préparation ancienne de fossiles, auparavant peu documentée, s’est révélée indispensable pour discerner les matériaux anciens des ajouts plus récents et nous a permis d’entreprendre un important travail de dérestauration. The fossil prints of Urolophus crassicaudatus, seized by Napoleon Bonaparte during the first campaign of Italy, are since conserved at the National History Museum of Paris. Our study of the former fossils’ preparation, previously little documented, proved essential to discern the former materials from more recent additions and able us to realize a significant work of de-restoration.

Hard-core deposits of calcifications on the surface of archaeological objects are causing great difficulty in diagnosing the condition of the surface layer and the structure of the objects. This kind of problem appeared during analysis of fragments of L2 amphorae’s neck discovered during first underwater examination of the bay of the first Hellenistic colonies in Croatia named Pharos, later a Roman settlement Pharia, today Stari Grad, on the island Hvar. Underwater research as well as analysis of finds was conducted by Arts Academy Split (UMAS). Fragment of the amphora’s neck was the part of first registrated ancient coastline in the bay. Fragment was covered with a hard crust of calcification. Under the calcification there was a sight of stamp of the workshop that had made this amphora. Given the scientific value and uniqueness of the finding and the fragility of the stamp, to avoid any damages a scan with MTSC was made that virtually eliminated plaque calcification. Beneath layers of calcification the scan showed letters PLATO. MSCT scan of amphorae’s neck enabled 3D images of object as well as an insight into the internal structure of the object. There are clearly visible mixtures in clay, cracks within the walls of the container and material weaknesses created due to the method of the baking process. All these information are essentially to chose right metode of restoration and conservation of objects. MSCT is powerfull non-destructive diagnostic method in the field of conservation- restauration. It is used by Departement of Conservation and restauration of UMAS as basic diagnostic method.

The draft of the first European Recommendation for the Conservation-Restoration of Cultural Heritage proposed by E.C.C.O., written with the support of ICCROM and participation of ENCoRE signifies a further step towards guaranteeing preservation of cultural heritage and greater recognition of the actors in this field. The Recommendation takes into consideration the need to define and regulate the field itself as a whole. This article presents this document and places it within the context of the work carried out by E.C.C.O. which includes other efforts to define the Conservation-Restoration profession, raise awareness and ensure the continued preservation of cultural heritage as a whole. Le projet de première recommandation Européenne pour la conservation-restauration du patrimoine culturel proposé par l’E.C.C.O., écrit avec le soutien de l’ICCROM et la participation de l’ENCoRE, constitue un pas en avant pour garantir la préservation du patrimoine culturel et une meilleure reconnaissance des acteurs de ce domaine. Cet article explique comment l’enquête sur la formation des restaurateurs commandée par l’Office international des Musées (OIM) en 1932 a finalement conduit en 1981 le Comité pour la Conservation du Comité international des Musées (ICOM-CC) à reconnaître la profession de conservateur-restaurateur. Il montre que la réglementation de la profession en Europe est l’aboutissement d’un processus amorcé il y a près d’un siècle. Il comble ainsi une lacune historiographique et revient sur la question de la protection du titre des praticiens, toujours en suspens. This article explains how the inquiry on training for restorers commissioned by the International Museum Office (IMO) in 1932 finally led in 1981 the Committee for Conservation of the International Concil of Museums (ICOM-CC) to recognize the profession of conservator-restorer. It establishes that the regulation of the profession in Europe is the result of a process which started nearly a century ago. It thus fills a historiographical gap and reexamines the question of protecting the title of practitioners, still pending.

La profession de conservateur-restaurateur s'est de plus en plus structurée au cours du dernier siècle grâce aux chartes internationales sur la conservation des biens culturels et aux accords européens sur l'enseignement supérieur, à la suite du processus de Bologne initié en 1999. Cet article a pour but de retracer le développement de la formation des restaurateurs en Allemagne depuis les années 1950 jusqu'à nos jours, sans prétendre à l'exhaustivité. The profession of Conservator-Restorer became more and more structured over the past century thanks to the international charters on the conservation of cultural property and the European agreements on education, as a result of the Bologna process initiated in 1999. This article is intended to trace the development of the training of conservators in Germany from the 1950s to the present day, without claiming completeness.

The Branch for conservation-restoration, Arts academy of Split started scanning artwork with MSCT 6 years ago. Purpose of the scans was determining the scope of destruction, errors in artwork structure and methodology of production. In early stages of MSCT scanning technology, artwork was scanned with X-ray too, for the comparison purposes. Using various software applications, scans obtained by MSCT equipment can be shown and analyzed as multi- planar reconstructions (MPR), “virtual endoscopy” 3D images of various structures and materials for different measuring purposes: length, area, absorption. Examples of application methods Wooden sculpture St. Ante Sculpture was scanned using X- ray first. This X-ray scan clearly shows multiple nails that were used for initial assembly and for later reconstructions as well. Joints of the wooden planks are visible, as well as “errors” in the core itself. Darker areas of the central part of the chest and lower end of the body have shown indication of cavities, however it is not possible to clearly identify interior structure of the object and layout of all wooden parts. Afterwards, the object was scanned with MSCT as well. Analyzing the lateral, side and axial MPR views resolved perplexities about technology of producing the sculpture. The central part of the structure was made from the wood that had its core removed. This way, two concave forms were made with reduced weight of the complete object. Final form was accomplished by laying down external wooden parts on top of the central part. Wooden parts were joined with glues and nails made of metal. The lower part of the structure is connected to the base with joint “pero-utor” and nails. Plank joints were filled with putty from the outside. Wooden crucifix It was noticed that the sculpture is very light. Soundings showed that the interior is mostly hollow and body was made of unusual spongy material. This material was identified as Ferula communis , a wild plant widespread across Mediteranean. The sculpture was scanned with MSCT. Scans showed it consists of interior shell which was made by laying down multiple layers of paper. The shell was later lined with round sticks of Ferula that were glued together. When enough thickness was obtained, the details of anatomy were derived. Afterwards the complete surface was lined with several layers of paper. Preparation layer and paint was applied over the paper. Scanning with MSCT equipment also enabled the virtual endoscopy which provided extremely detailed image of the interior. L’article signale la nécessité d’un changement radical de la méthodologie de la conservation-restauration, qui aujourd’hui s’avère insuffisante face à son cadre théorique et à ses objectifs. En écho à la restauration critique, construite et utilisée depuis la seconde moitié du XXº siècle sous des principes phénoménologiques, l’auteur propose une nouvelle conception méthodologique, qu’il appelle restauration épistémologique, fondée à partir d’une approche transdisciplinaire de la réalité.The article points out the need for radical change in the methodology of conservation and restoration which is now inadequate to its theoretical framework and its objectives. In relation to the critical restoration constructed and used since the second half of the twentieth century under phenomenological principles, the author proposes a new design methodology called epistemologicalrestoration basis from the transdisciplinary approach to reality.

The rise of “Web 2.0,” the advent of social media applications, and other technological advancements allow conservators to form broader collaborative networks. Now conservators have the opportunity to harness the power of these technological advancements and begin building new ways to create and share more information on an institutional and personal level; at the same time conservators can directly engage the visitor in the creation of this information.
