Recent medicine shortages in Australia have significantly impacted pharmacists' professional practice. The inability to provide essential medicines to consumers in a timely manner has increased pharmacist workload whilst attempting to maintain quality patient care during and after the COVID‐19 pandemic. This study aimed to investigate the impact of medicine shortages on the operational responsibilities of community pharmacists, their ability to deliver health care, and the personal impact on community pharmacists. A nationwide anonymous survey was distributed to Australian community pharmacists via the Qualtrics survey platform between April – September 2023. Of the 142 pharmacists who responded to this survey, 89.5% (n = 127) reported having to purchase medicines from sources other than their regular wholesaler on at least a weekly basis in the last 3 months. The same number reported that they frequently needed to substitute medicines because of ongoing shortages. Most pharmacists (n = 128, 90.1%) reported that their workload had been affected by medicine shortages and that their motivation and engagement with work were frequently affected (n = 79, 55.7%). Pharmacists reported taking on additional administrative responsibilities to ensure access to treatment and health care. Current regulatory restrictions regarding the substitution of medicine dosage forms are often implemented only after community pharmacists are affected by medicine shortages. This survey highlights the need for improved awareness of medicine shortages and timely actions to be taken to ensure pharmacist wellbeing and patient access to health care in the face of medicine shortages. Introduction: The misuse or abuse and dependence of medications containing codeine continue to be a major global public health concern. This study aimed to investigate the role of community pharmacists in preventing the abuse or misuse and dependence of codeine-containing analgesic drugs in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 226 community pharmacists from various community pharmacies across multiple cities of Saudi Arabia was conducted from 09 May 2023 to 09 October 2023. Study data were collected and managed using Research Electronic Data Capture tool. Fourteen trained data collectors visited randomly selected community pharmacies in different cities, provided pharmacists with an electronic questionnaire link, and collected their responses electronically. The dataset was downloaded in SPSS format, and analyzed for both descriptive and inferential purposes. Results: The primary indicators that community pharmacists considered when suspecting cases of abuse or misuse and dependence included customers who requested a larger quantity of the medication (88.5%), frequently visited the pharmacy and sought the specific medicine (82.7%), and those who took advantage of the crowd (70.8%). Pharmacists have been instrumental in preventing abuse or misuse and dependence by ensuring that medicines with abuse potential are not easily accessible to consumers (87.6%), providing alternative options (81%), reducing the dose (65%), referring patients to physicians (62.4%), and refusing to sell or denying availability (54.9%). Additionally, pharmacists primarily focused on raising public awareness (85%) as a noteworthy proportion of customers (54.9%) became desperate to obtain the drug after missing a dose. It was also suggested that community pharmacists should receive specialized training in substance abuse or misuse, as 46.9% of them lacked such training. Discussion: Community pharmacists, being frequently the initial point of contact easily reachable, possess the capability to greatly assist in identifying the patients and averting abuse or misuse and dependence during the dispensing of medication. Continuing professional development (CPD) is a process by which healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, can be engaged in life‐long learning and development. In 2018, the Jordanian government issued Regulation No. 46, which addresses the CPD and relicensing cycle requirements. This study aims to investigate Jordanian community pharmacists' experiences and perceptions toward CPDs. The study also discussed factors influencing pharmacists' engagement in CPD activities. An online self‐administered questionnaire was distributed between August and October of 2022 using a range of participant identification and recruitment strategies. The questionnaire was designed for community pharmacists who are currently in practice. Descriptive data analysis was carried out. Of the 425 participating community pharmacists, 270 (63.5%) had a positive attitude toward CPD in terms of considering CPD to be a professional responsibility for all practising pharmacists. Almost 50% of recruited community pharmacists had no preference between theoretical and practical activities. Moreover, carrying out research projects and participating in research groups were the least preferred CPD activities. Evidence indicates that the most influencing factors were feasibility and capacity‐related issues such as time, cost, work burden and requirements and the logistics related to CPD activities. Regulators, professional associations, and legislators are responsible for planning and implementing actions that reduce obstacles and increase facilitators. Objectives: To investigate the perception of community pharmacists on the down-scheduling of 5-HT3 antagonists to pharmacist-only-medicine for treatment of acute nausea and/or vomiting in Australia. Methods: A nationwide anonymous survey targeting Australian community pharmacists was conducted from April to May 2023. Responses were collected and analysed quantitively or qualitatively, where appropriate. Key findings: Participants reported that 5-HT3 antagonists were effective at treating nausea and/or vomiting and would likely recommend their use. Training is required to manage supply due to concerns related to their side effects. Conclusion: Participants supported down-scheduling of 5-HT3 antagonists for the treatment of nausea and/or vomiting in Australia. A pilot study on the provision of 5-HT3 antagonists by pharmacists is recommended as is the development of guidelines for pharmacist-only supply before down-scheduling is considered. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate and provide insight into the prevalence and patterns of off-label drug use in the pediatric population from the perspective of community pharmacists, addressing the existing data gap in a developing setting. Methods: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted on Albanian community pharmacists in June 2021. The online administered survey explored the participants' demographic details, perceptions, and experiences with off-label prescriptions in pediatric patients. The statistical analysis conducted on the survey data comprised the construction of frequency tables and the application of the chi-square test for independence. Key findings: Three hundred and thirty-six community pharmacists nationwide completed the survey, out of which 186 (55.3%) were practiced in Tirana, the capital of Albania. Over 80% of surveyed pharmacists (n = 275) had encountered off-label drug prescriptions in pediatric patients, yet only 40% of participants reported dispensing medicines for off-label use. Community pharmacists reported that general pediatricians tended to prescribe off-label medications more frequently than pediatric subspecialists or general practitioners. It was found that off-label prescriptions were more frequently observed among children aged between 2 and 11 years. Antibiotics were the most reported medicines for off-label use in this study mentioned in almost all off-label categories. Conclusions: Prescribing medicines for unapproved uses for the treatment of pediatric patients is present in community settings in Albania. Background: In Nigeria, the attitudes of community pharmacists toward providing pharmaceutical care (PC) for people with mental illnesses remain unclear. This study aimed to assess the community pharmacists' attitudes and barriers toward providing PC services for clients with mental disorders in Enugu, Nigeria. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among all eligible community pharmacists in Enugu, Nigeria. The data were obtained using validated self-administered questionnaire adapted from the literature and a sociodemographic form. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square/Fisher's Exact test. P values less than 0.05 were considered significant. Results: A total of 155 community pharmacists took part in the survey, giving a response rate of 95.6%. The findings showed that more than half of the community pharmacists (n = 80, 51.6%) had positive attitudes toward providing PC services for patients with mental illness. Positive attitudes were associated with having a family member with mental illness (p = 0.038) and a good self-rated knowledge of mental illness (p < 0.001). The most frequently reported barriers to PC were patient factors associated with their symptoms (59.4%) and a lack of patient information (52.9%). Conclusion: The attitudes of community pharmacists toward providing PC for patients with mental illness is largely positive but suboptimal. Patient factors related to their symptoms were cited as the major obstacle to providing PC. Burnout has negative consequences for the well-being of healthcare professionals and for the safety of patients. The prevalence of burnout varies among health professions and practice settings and across studies. Consequently, this cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with burnout among community pharmacists in the Qassim region, Saudi Arabia. The study used the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) to assess the burnout. The CBI consists of three scales, including personal burnout, work-related burnout, and client-related burnout. A total of 226 community pharmacists participated in the study. Of these, 63.72% were male, and 44.25% had experience of 1–5 years as community pharmacists. The prevalence of personal burnout was 83.63%, while the prevalence of work-related burnout was 83.19%, and the prevalence of client-related burnout was 76.11%. The prevalence of burnout was higher among younger age, early-career pharmacists; staff pharmacists; pharmacists working ≥6 days per week; and those working in pharmacies with fewer pharmacy teams. Multivariable logistic regression showed that compared to five workdays, working six and seven days per week was an independent risk factor for developing personal burnout [(adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 3.60: CI = (1.29–10.05), p = 0.014) and (aOR = 4.72: CI = (1.17–19.08), p = 0.030), respectively]. Similarly, pharmacists working in pharmacies with one or two pharmacists were at higher odds of developing personal burnout compared to others working in a larger team (aOR = 3.41: CI = (1.09–10.66), p = 0.035). For work-related burnout, working six and seven days per week was also an independent risk factor [(aOR = 5.78: CI = (1.96–17.06), p = 0.001), and (aOR = 8.38: CI = (1.99–35.27), p = 0.004, respectively)]. For client-related burnout, staff pharmacists were at higher odds of developing client-related burnout compared to pharmacy managers [(aOR = 2.28: CI = (1.01–5.14), p = 0.046)]. Overall, the prevalence of burnout is alarmingly high among community pharmacists in Saudi Arabia. Consequently, it is crucial to urgently address it through robust initiatives, strategies, and interventions that support the well-being, quality of life, and resilience of community pharmacists. Background: Antibiotics are widely used in the pediatric population, and their inappropriate use contributes to antibiotic resistance, which is a growing concern in developing countries. Therefore, this national cross-sectional study aimed to assess community pharmacists’ knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding appropriate antibiotic use and dosing in pediatric patients and to explore the barriers to such use in Palestine. Methods: A questionnaire-based survey was conducted among community pharmacists on the West Bank, Palestine, from September 2022 to March 2023. The survey assessed the pharmacists’ sociodemographic characteristics; knowledge, practices, and attitudes toward antibiotic use; and understanding of antibiotic dosing. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and the factors affecting pharmacists’ knowledge were evaluated. Results: The study included 301 community pharmacists, with an average age of 30.06 years, who were primarily female (75.1%). The majority of the pharmacists (80.1%) correctly believed that antibiotics are effective against bacterial infections. However, 18.3% believed that antibiotics are effective against viruses. While 61.8% knew that antibiotics kill germs, 32.0% were unaware that not all antibiotics require refrigeration. Furthermore, 67.8% were aware that antibiotics do not speed up recovery from diarrhea. Over 99% of the participants recognized that antibiotic resistance developed due to various resistant mechanisms. The majority (78.7%) believed that each infection needed a different antibiotic. Pharmacists demonstrated reasonable knowledge of antibiotic dosing in case scenarios. Knowledge was positively correlated with years of experience (P = 0.001). Conclusions: This study revealed that community pharmacy professionals have a good understanding of antibiotic usage in pediatric patients. The findings suggest that professional expertise and quality training improve healthcare services. However, the results may not be universally applicable, as identifying knowledge gaps is necessary to help with the development of focused interventions. Objectives This study explored the experiences and perceptions of public sector pharmacists in primary healthcare during the early phase of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in nine small and medium-sized cities in the interior state of Paraná, Brazil. Methods Fourteen individual semi-structured online interviews were conducted using Google Meet®. Employing convenience sampling followed by "snowball" recruitment, audio-recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematically analyzed through an inductive approach. Key findings Four major themes and two subthemes emerged: (i) workplace and service changes, (i.a) use of social media and remote communication; (ii) working conditions, (ii.b) supply and use of personal protective equipment; (iii) irrational use of medicines against COVID-19; and (iv) mental health. Conclusion Pharmacists reported a lack of preparation, centralization, and coordination, leading to overwhelming workloads and stress. However, they demonstrated resilience in delivering care and promoting rational medicine use. Background The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is not currently included in the national immunization program in Jordan. The rising prevalence of cervical cancer in Jordan highlights the necessity for a novel approach to boost HPV vaccination rates. Thus, the main objective of this study was to assess the knowledge, beliefs, and potential barriers concerning HPV and HPV vaccine administration in community pharmacies. Methods This cross-sectional study, conducted in Jordan between July and September 2023, involved community pharmacists. Using a convenience sampling approach, one author visited various community pharmacies to distribute and collect questionnaires. A total knowledge score, out of a possible 10 points, and a belief score out of 40 were calculated for each pharmacists. Additionally, the study examined factors that may influence participants' knowledge and belief levels. Results A total of 302 community pharmacists took part in the survey, with approximately two-thirds of the participants being female (n = 230, 76.2%). The average knowledge score about HPV was 2.7 out of 10 (standard deviation [SD] = 1.8), and linear regression analysis indicated no significant relationship between pharmacists' knowledge about HPV and the factors studied, such as age, gender, area of pharmacy, and the acquired degree. In terms of beliefs, findings revealed that 63.2% supported an expanded role for community pharmacists in HPV vaccination. Three main barriers were identified: lack of parental knowledge (n = 218, 72.2%), insufficient educational materials for parents (n = 206, 68.2%), and inadequate provider knowledge (n = 201, 66.6%). Conclusions In summary, this study provides valuable insights into the knowledge, beliefs, and challenges surrounding HPV and HPV vaccination among community pharmacists in Jordan. To enhance the involvement of community pharmacists in promoting HPV vaccination and aiding in the prevention of HPV-related illnesses, it is crucial to address the identified knowledge gaps and obstacles. RÉSUMÉ Les besoins en soins palliatifs à domicile augmentent dans l'ensemble des pays occidentaux. Les pharmaciens d'officine sont des professionnels de proximité dont les rôles dans les soins de fin de vie à domicile restent méconnus. Cette étude vise à comprendre les représentations des pharmaciens d'officine de leurs missions dans les soins de fin de vie à domicile en France et à analyser leurs vécus de ces accompagnements. Un questionnaire en ligne a été diffusé auprès d'officinaux en activité sur le territoire français entre décembre 2022 et mars 2023. Sur 136 répondants au questionnaire, 87% d'entre eux ont accompagné au moins un patient en fin de vie dans les 3 mois précédant l'enquête. L'éducation thérapeutique (88% des répondants), le soutien psychologique aux aidants (85% des répondants), la sécurisation des traitements (82% des répondants) et la surveillance de l'observance thérapeutique (80% des répondants) sont les comportements validés par le plus grand nombre de participants. Ces prises en charge de patients en fin de vie sont vécues de façon globalement positive par la majorité des professionnels interrogés. The need for home palliative care is increasing in all Western countries. Community pharmacists are local professionals whose role in end-of-life care at home remains poorly understood. The aim of this study is to understand how community pharmacists see their role in end-of-life home care in France, and to analyze their experiences of this care. An online questionnaire was distributed to community pharmacists working in France between December 2022 and March 2023. Of the 136 respondents to the questionnaire, 87% had accompanied at least one patient at the end of life in the 3 months preceding the survey. Therapeutic education (88% of respondents), psychological support for caregivers (85% of respondents), securing treatment (82% of respondents) and monitoring therapeutic compliance (80% of respondents) are the behaviors validated by the greatest number of participants. The majority of professionals surveyed had a positive overall experience of managing patients at the end of life. Background: Privacy in healthcare is a fundamental right essential to maintain patient confidentiality and trust. Community pharmacies in Saudi Arabia (SA) play a critical role in the healthcare system by providing accessible services and serving as initial points of contact for medical advice. However, the open nature of these settings poses significant challenges in maintaining patient privacy. Methods: This cross-sectional study used electronic surveys distributed across various online platforms. The target sample included Saudi adults, with a sample size of 385 participants to achieve 80% statistical power at a 95% confidence interval. The survey comprised demographic questions and sections evaluating perceptions of privacy, the importance of privacy, and personal experiences regarding privacy in community pharmacies. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression models were used for the analysis. Results: A total of 511 responses were obtained. The mean age was 33.5 years, with an almost equal distribution of males (49.71%) and females (50.29%). Most participants held a bachelor's degree or higher (78.67%). Privacy perceptions varied, with only 9.0% strongly agreeing that there was a private space for consultations, while 64.0% felt that the design of community pharmacies did not adequately consider patient privacy, and 86.9% reported that conversations could be overheard. Privacy concerns were notable, with almost one-half of the participants (47.6%) having concerns about privacy and 56.6% doubting the confidentiality of their health information. Moreover, 17.6% reported being asked for unnecessary personal information when buying medication, and 56.2% admitted to avoiding discussing a health problem with the pharmacist due to privacy concerns. Experiences of privacy breaches were reported by 15.7% of respondents. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the availability of private space in the pharmacy and patients feeling that the pharmacy respects their privacy were associated with a lower likelihood of avoiding discussions with pharmacists due to privacy concerns (OR = 0.758, CI = 0.599–0.0957 and OR = 0.715, CI = 0.542–0.945 respectively) Conversely, greater privacy concerns and previous privacy breaches significantly increased the likelihood of avoiding discussions with pharmacists in the community pharmacy (OR = 1.657, CI = 1.317–2.102 and OR = 4.127, CI = 1.886–9.821 respectively). Conclusions: This study highlights the significant concerns regarding privacy practices in community pharmacies in SA. Thus, there is a need for standards to improve privacy in community pharmacies, such as mandating the need for private consultation areas and enhanced staff training on handling privacy-related issues. Abstract Background Studies have shown that training interventions fail when proper strategies are not in place for their implementation. The study described the implementation strategies used in the delivery of the HIV test services (HTS) and measured implementation outcomes in the delivery of the services. Methods The study was conducted between August and November 2019 among 50 selected community pharmacies in Oyo State, Nigeria using a mixed-method quantitative and qualitative data survey design. The implementation strategies and activities used in the delivery of HTS in the pharmacies and during outreaches were described while both observational and survey methods were used to collect data. Implementation outcomes were measured and analysed in terms of penetration, adoption, acceptability, feasibility, fidelity, and appropriateness of the intervention. Results Penetration among respondents was 90%. Acceptability of the HTS was high (77.3%) among clients 20–49 years of age with 919 clients participating in the HIV screening. While 919 HIV tests were conducted, only 19 (2.1%) were positive. Adherence to the protocol of delivery of HTS (fidelity) indicated that all the respondents conducted rapid HIV testing, pre-testing counselling (43, 95.6%), post-testing counselling (40, 88.9%), and provision of confidential test results (39, 86.7%). Respondents’ responsiveness indicated that 23 (51.1%%) of the respondents could use up to 80% and above of the test strips given within the period. Researchers’ observations showed respondents’ ability to perform the tests as intended with little challenges. Participants felt that rendering the services was an interesting experience, and fulfilling, and allowed them to improve on their professional deliverables and practice. It also showcased the relevance of pharmacists in rendering HTS, creating awareness of the menace of HIV/AIDS, and helping people to stop the spread. Conclusion The study showed that HTS is acceptable, appropriate, feasible, and easy to adopt in community pharmacies and penetration was high. For sustainability, community pharmacists should be well remunerated, and need for an established policy to include this scope in community pharmacy practice.

Background: Community pharmacists are engaged in various professional activities starting from drug dispensing to promoting the well-being of patients. They dispense medications as stated in the prescription and are also licensed to prescribe over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Self-medication is widely practiced in various countries, which may lead to irrational drug use. The objectives of this study were to identify the factors associated with dispensing errors, to find ways to minimize dispensing errors, to identify patients’ reasons for self-medication, and to find the drugs commonly utilized by patients as OTC medications and the sources of their drug information. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of a convenience sample of 286 registered community pharmacists all over Tabuk was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire. Results: Physician’s unclear handwriting in the prescription was the major factor for dispensing error (2.6 out of 3) and writing the prescription clearly by the physician or using a printed form of prescription was an important factor in minimizing dispensing errors (2.91 out of 3). Previous similar complaints in the past were the main reason for self-medication (2.45 out of 3) with analgesics and antipyretics being the commonly dispensed drug groups dispensed as OTC medications (2.95 out of 3). Conclusion: Self-medication practices and dispensing errors are widespread in Tabuk. Antibiotics were dispensed as OTC medication, which may lead to more chance of irrational drug use. Writing the prescription clearly and legibly would reduce dispensing errors. It is the community pharmacists’ responsibility to increase awareness regarding the appropriate use of drugs to the public.

Abstract Reporting adverse drug reactions (ADRs) is fundamental in improving medication safety. Community pharmacists (CPs) being the first point of contact for individuals seeking healthcare in a community, play a significant role in ADR reporting. However, this has been poorly implemented in many countries including Nigeria. This paper aims to explore stakeholders’ perspectives on current reporting practices and suggest ways to enhance ADR reporting among CPs in Nigeria. This qualitative study employed a purposive sampling approach to identify key informants. Key informant interviews (KIIs) were conducted with 25 carefully selected pharmacists, using a semi-structured interview guide between July 2023 and August 2023. The interview transcripts were analyzed using a thematic content approach. While a low ADR reporting trend was observed among all participating pharmacists, it was notably higher among those with less than five years of experience. The main barriers to ADR reporting, as identified by the interviewed community pharmacists were lack of awareness and knowledge, absence of motivation, and insufficient feedback from National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). Training and awareness campaigns were the most frequently suggested methods for improving ADR reporting. Other proposed strategies included providing motivation, regular feedback, establishing mandatory reporting, and simplifying the reporting process. The study has highlighted the suboptimal ADR reporting practices among CPs in Anambra state. It underscores the significance of training, sensitization, advocacy, and other related interventions as pivotal means to enhance ADR reporting in this group. Furthermore, there is a pressing need for intervention-based studies to delve into and implement these approaches effectively.

Abstract Background Being the professional membership body for pharmacists in Jordan, the Jordan Pharmacists Association (JPA) took the initiative to establish a training centre for practising pharmacists. This study aims to identify the self-assessed training priorities of community pharmacists in Jordan. Methods In the period between August and October 2022, an online self-administered questionnaire was distributed using a variety of participants’ identification and recruitment approaches. The questionnaire targeted currently practising community pharmacists. Data were analysed descriptively and inferentially. Results In total, 470 community pharmacists participated in this study. Of 470 participants, 307 (65.3%) were employees, of which 206 were full-time employees. Results showed that only 97 (21%) had access to an in-house training programme or scheme. Self-assessment of training needs highlighted differences between the three competencies clusters. While administrative and managerial skills and competencies were more frequently prioritised on average than the other two clusters, interpersonal and communication skills were needed the least. Evidence showed a significant difference between female and male participants regarding the need for training addressing maternity and early childhood health training issues. Lastly, the role-based comparison showed that, compared to pharmacy owners, employees had a significantly higher need for training related to bookkeeping and taxation returns preparation and how to handle and manage records of narcotic and controlled medicines. Conclusions If training and development programmes are tailored to address specific needs in administrative, clinical, and interpersonal competencies, community pharmacists have the potential to enhance public health, expand their role, provide patient-centred care, and support the national healthcare system.

Background: Studies have shown that training interventions fail when proper strategies are not in place for their implementation. The study described the implementation strategies used in the delivery of the HIV test services (HTS) and measured implementation outcomes in the delivery of the services. Methods: The study was conducted between August and November 2019 among 50 selected community pharmacies in Oyo State, Nigeria using a mixed-method quantitative and qualitative data survey design. The implementation strategies and activities used in the delivery of HTS in the pharmacies and during outreaches were described while both observational and survey methods were used to collect data. Implementation outcomes were measured and analysed in terms of penetration, adoption, acceptability, feasibility, fidelity, and appropriateness of the intervention. Results: Penetration among respondents was 90%. Acceptability of the HTS was high (77.3%) among clients 20–49 years of age with 919 clients participating in the HIV screening. While 919 HIV tests were conducted, only 19 (2.1%) were positive. Adherence to the protocol of delivery of HTS (fidelity) indicated that all the respondents conducted rapid HIV testing, pre-testing counselling (43, 95.6%), post-testing counselling (40, 88.9%), and provision of confidential test results (39, 86.7%). Respondents' responsiveness indicated that 23 (51.1%%) of the respondents could use up to 80% and above of the test strips given within the period. Researchers' observations showed respondents' ability to perform the tests as intended with little challenges. Participants felt that rendering the services was an interesting experience, and fulfilling, and allowed them to improve on their professional deliverables and practice. It also showcased the relevance of pharmacists in rendering HTS, creating awareness of the menace of HIV/AIDS, and helping people to stop the spread. Conclusion: The study showed that HTS is acceptable, appropriate, feasible, and easy to adopt in community pharmacies and penetration was high. Background: Pharmacy board certification provides pharmacists with formal recognition of their careers and their involvement in direct and comprehensive patient care. Credentialing as a board-certified pharmacist demonstrates that the pharmacist has specialized expertise and is able to provide advanced level patient care in a specific pharmacy practice specialty. There is currently not a community pharmacy board certification available in the United States. With the expanding role and clinical expectations of community pharmacists nationwide, perspectives regarding the utility of a community pharmacy specialty board certification are necessary. Methods: A cross-sectional survey with demographic and perception questions (5-point Likert scale) was distributed electronically via Qualtrics. A random sample of pharmacists registered in Rhode Island, Ohio, and Nebraska were selected and surveyed. Results: 53 survey responses were collected. There was a statistically significant difference in board certification history (P =.001) and history of post-graduate training (P <.001) between community pharmacists and non-community pharmacists. Community pharmacists were more likely to simultaneously see community pharmacists as general practitioners (P =.030) and as pharmacy practice specialists (P =.001). Non-community pharmacists were more likely to be familiar with current maintenance requirements for pharmacy board certifications (P <.001) and to feel that a board certification is an appropriate indicator of experience in a pharmacy specialty area (P =.016). Conclusion: Views regarding community pharmacy and board certification differed between community and non-community pharmacists. Objectives: To investigate community pharmacists' attitudes, confidence, practice, knowledge, and barriers towards the management of oral side effects of asthma medications. Methods: A paper-based questionnaire was developed from previous research, trialled, and validated. Convenience sampling through web search was used to identify pharmacy practices across Cairns, Queensland, Australia. Practices were contacted by email and phone before hand-delivering and collecting questionnaires. Key findings: Thirty eight community pharmacist responses were descriptively analysed. Community pharmacists surveyed within the Cairns region feel that it is within their role to help manage the side effects of asthma medications. Many feel this is best conveyed during inhaler dispensing and instruction. Current advice is more prompted rather than preventative. Pharmacists routinely advise patients of mouth-rinsing following inhaler use, however the link to preventing side effects is not clearly communicated. Pharmacists are confident in recognizing and managing common side effects such as oral thrush and dry mouth, but fewer are aware of dental decay and gingivitis. Many identify a lack of guidelines as the largest barrier to providing preventive oral health advice. Conclusions: Cairns community pharmacists already self-perceive their role in the management of oral side effects of asthma medications. Advice given to patients is practical but does not clearly convey the causative associations between asthma medications and their potential oral side effects. Patient education is prompted more by enquiry rather than a preventative approach. Reporting adverse drug reactions (ADRs) is fundamental in improving medication safety. Community pharmacists (CPs) being the first point of contact for individuals seeking healthcare in a community, play a significant role in ADR reporting. However, this has been poorly implemented in many countries including Nigeria. This paper aims to explore stakeholders' perspectives on current reporting practices and suggest ways to enhance ADR reporting among CPs in Nigeria. This qualitative study employed a purposive sampling approach to identify key informants. Key informant interviews (KIIs) were conducted with 25 carefully selected pharmacists, using a semi-structured interview guide between July 2023 and August 2023. The interview transcripts were analyzed using a thematic content approach. While a low ADR reporting trend was observed among all participating pharmacists, it was notably higher among those with less than five years of experience. The main barriers to ADR reporting, as identified by the interviewed community pharmacists were lack of awareness and knowledge, absence of motivation, and insufficient feedback from National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). Training and awareness campaigns were the most frequently suggested methods for improving ADR reporting. Other proposed strategies included providing motivation, regular feedback, establishing mandatory reporting, and simplifying the reporting process. The study has highlighted the suboptimal ADR reporting practices among CPs in Anambra state. Background: Topical corticosteroids are commonly used to treat several skin conditions, most notably atopic dermatitis. Many studies have found that patients lack knowledge about the safety, potency, and appropriate use of topical corticosteroids. This can be due to ineffective education by pharmacists and other healthcare providers. This study aims to evaluate the appropriateness of dispensing and counseling practices of community pharmacists towards topical corticosteroids in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional survey study was conducted in Saudi Arabia among 418 community pharmacists from different regions of Saudi Arabia. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire that covered community pharmacists' sociodemographic information, their perceptions of patient knowledge about topical corticosteroid use, and their dispensing and their counseling practices, in addition to their perceived barriers to counseling. Results: The majority of the participating community pharmacists were Saudi (57.4%), female (66.7%), holding a bachelor's degree (63.4%), and full-time workers (91.1%). Most of the time, community pharmacists counseled patients on the frequency of application per day and the duration of treatment (75.8% and 74.8%, respectively). The median counseling practice score was 17, with an IQR of 14–21. The main barrier to counseling was lack of time (33.7%). Only 15% of community pharmacists accurately identified all scenarios that necessitate medical referrals. Dry skin, itchiness, and irritation were the most common side effects reported by community pharmacists for patients to complain about (69.4%). Most pharmacists agreed that misuse is the most likely cause of topical corticosteroid adverse drug events (53.7%), followed by medication overuse, such as patient self-treatment (48%). Conclusion: Community pharmacists counseling practices to their patients about the use of topical corticosteroids require improvement. Objective: This scoping review aims to map the available literature and provide an overview of the published articles discussing the impact of electronic prescribing on medication errors and pharmacy workflow. Methods: The literature search was conducted using PubMed®, Web of Science®, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews®, as well as grey literature reports, using the search terms and related components of "pharmacists", "electronic prescribing", "medication errors", and "efficiency". The search included all articles that were published from January 2011 to September 2023. Twenty-two relevant articles were identified and fully reviewed, ten of which were included in this review. Results: Electronic prescribing (e-prescribing) provides a solution for some of the challenges that are associated with handwritten and paper prescriptions. However, the implementation of e-prescribing systems has been recognized as a source of new unforeseen medication errors in all the reviewed articles. Productivity in community pharmacies has been affected with receiving electronic prescriptions (e-prescriptions) and having to deal with the issues that arise from them. The pharmacists' interventions were not eliminated with e-prescriptions compared to other prescription formats. The most frequently reported reason for intervention was related to incomplete instructions in the field of directions of use. Other common challenges with e-prescriptions were related to missing information, quantity, inappropriate dose, dosage form, and drug. Discussion: This review demonstrates the scarcity of research about the impact of electronic prescribing on medication error and efficiency in community pharmacies. In the literature, most of the studies had mainly focused on hospital pharmacies. The literature search demonstrated that there are still some barriers to overcome with e-prescribing systems and that medication errors were not fully eliminated with e-prescriptions. New errors have been identified with e-prescriptions, all of which caused delays in processing, which affected the productivity of the pharmacy staff, and could have negatively impacted patients' safety if not properly resolved. Conclusion: e-Prescribing solved some of the challenges associated with illegibility of handwritten prescriptions. However, more time is required to allow e-prescribing systems to mature. Community Pharmacists (CPs) are easily accessible and can advocate for the appropriate use of antibiotics in children. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 47 CPs and 46 parents/caregivers. Background In many countries, self-medication is, in fact, the main service provided, exhausting pharmacist time and increasing their workload. However, there are currently no reports describing the impact of burnout on patient medication counseling. Objectives This study was conducted to determine the influence of burnout on over-the-counter (OTC) medication counseling services in Vietnam. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in community pharmacies across four districts in Can Tho City, Vietnam, between April and May 2023. Burnout was assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS), comprising three subscales: emotional exhaustion (EE; 9 items), depersonalization (DP; 5 items), and personal accomplishment (PA; 8 items). OTC medication counseling activities were evaluated using 12 questions. Results Of the 385 participants recruited, 22.3% reported high work intensity as a common factor contributing to burnout. Pharmacists with burnout had significantly lower medication counseling scores than those without burnout (mean = 4.35 vs. mean = 4.55, P = 0.005). Of the 12 OTC medication counseling activities, 6 activities, including inquiring about the recent medications used by the patient (P = 0.044), discouraging long-term medication use (P = 0.021), warning about the possibility of self-misdiagnosis (P < 0.001), warning about the possibility of the patient choosing the wrong treatment method (P = 0.001), providing advice on improving health (P = 0.005), and inquiring about allergies in the patient (P < 0.001), had significantly lower scores in pharmacists with burnout. Conclusions There was a significant negative association between burnout and medication counseling activities. Increasing staff numbers may be a useful solution for reducing work intensity, as this factor is reported to contribute the most to burnout among current pharmacists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Including pharmacists in collaborative mental healthcare models has yielded positive results. Establishing processes to enhance pharmacists' mental health care capabilities is crucial for addressing the increasing burden and improving access to mental health services. This study evaluated community pharmacists' mental health competencies and analyzed associated factors using a rigorous international framework. Additionally, it sought to identify pharmacists' training needs and support requirements as the first stop in creating a roadmap for enhancing mental healthcare through community pharmacies. A large-scale national study employing a mixed-methods approach was conducted with community pharmacists in United Arab Emirates. Semi-structured individual interviews and a cross-sectional survey were conducted. Pharmacists' core competencies were assessed using the Core Mental Health Competencies Framework for all Pharmacy Professionals. Generalized linear models were utilized to identify predictors of pharmacists' competency levels. Thematic analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. In total 650 community pharmacists completed the survey (93.7% response rate). Eight pharmacists participated in semi-structured interviews. Nearly two-thirds (63.7%) received general communication skills training, while training in motivational interviewing (44.7%), shared decision-making (37.2%), and mental illness stereotyping/stigma (23.9%) were less common. Pharmacists reported lower perceived competence in their relationship with multidisciplinary teams (M = 3.02, SD = 0.89), stigma recognition (M = 3.02, SD = 1.04), and identifying mental health crises and aiding in the person's safety (M = 3.01, SD = 1.05). Poor communication skills (p < 0.001) and working in pharmacies that do not stock psychotropic medications (p = 0.023) were associated with lower perceived competence. Qualitative analysis identified training needs in various domains, including attitudes, values, and beliefs about mental health; relationships with multidisciplinary teams; communication skills; pharmaceutical knowledge; and personal and service development. Mental health-related training is needed for community pharmacists. Objectives Community pharmacists play an important role in primary care access and delivery for all patients, including patients with a family physician or nurse practitioner ("attached") and patients without a family physician or nurse practitioner ("unattached"). During the COVID-19 pandemic, community pharmacists were accessible care providers for unattached patients and patients who had difficulty accessing their usual primary care providers ("semi-attached"). Before and during the pandemic, pharmacist services expanded in several Canadian provinces. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore patient experiences receiving care from community pharmacists, and their perspectives on the scope of practice of community pharmacists. Methods Fifteen patients in Nova Scotia, Canada, were interviewed. Participant narratives pertaining to pharmacist care were analyzed thematically. Key findings Attached, "semi-attached," and unattached patients valued community pharmacists as a cornerstone of care and sought pharmacists for a variety of health services, including triaging and system navigation. Patients spoke positively about expanding the scope of practice for community pharmacists, and better optimization of pharmacists in primary care. Conclusions System decision-makers should consider the positive role community pharmacists can play in achieving primary care across the Quintuple Aim (population health, patient and provider experiences, reducing costs, and supporting equity in health). BackgroundTransition to electronic prescribing (e-prescribing) systems, such as Wasfaty, represents a significant advancement in healthcare. Introduced by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health in 2019, Wasfaty aims to enhance medication availability and streamline healthcare delivery. This study explores the challenges and enablers community pharmacists face when using the Wasfaty system in Saudi Arabia. This study uses the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) to analyse behavioural and contextual factors influencing pharmacists’ adoption of electronic prescriptions. TDF identifies key challenges and enablers across multiple behavioural domains, making it well-suited for understanding complex healthcare implementation processes.MethodsA qualitative study design was employed using the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) to understand factors affecting Wasfaty use. Participants were purposively sampled, focusing on community pharmacists experienced with Wasfaty prescriptions. Recruitment and interviews occurred from June to August 2024. Data saturation was achieved at 18 interviews. Transcripts were coded and mapped into TDF domains to identify barriers and enablers.ResultsFive key TDF domains influenced Wasfaty use: environmental context and resources; social influences; beliefs about capabilities; social/professional role and identity; and knowledge. Challenges included high prescription volumes, medication shortages, technical difficulties, resistance from elderly patients, and inconsistent training. Some pharmacists reported inadequate training as a barrier, while others highlighted effective programs as enablers.ConclusionSignificant barriers, such as insufficient training and high prescription volumes, impede effective Wasfaty use. However, continuous training, prior experience with electronic systems, and organisational support were crucial enablers. Addressing these challenges through targeted interventions can enhance e-prescription efficiency, improving patient care and outcomes. Findings underscore the importance of ongoing professional development and supportive work environments in fostering pharmacists’ competence in electronic systems.

Abstract Continuing professional development (CPD) is a process by which healthcare professionals, including pharmacists, can be engaged in life‐long learning and development. In 2018, the Jordanian government issued Regulation No. 46, which addresses the CPD and relicensing cycle requirements. This study aims to investigate Jordanian community pharmacists' experiences and perceptions toward CPDs. The study also discussed factors influencing pharmacists' engagement in CPD activities. An online self‐administered questionnaire was distributed between August and October of 2022 using a range of participant identification and recruitment strategies. The questionnaire was designed for community pharmacists who are currently in practice. Descriptive data analysis was carried out. Of the 425 participating community pharmacists, 270 (63.5%) had a positive attitude toward CPD in terms of considering CPD to be a professional responsibility for all practising pharmacists. Almost 50% of recruited community pharmacists had no preference between theoretical and practical activities. Moreover, carrying out research projects and participating in research groups were the least preferred CPD activities. Evidence indicates that the most influencing factors were feasibility and capacity‐related issues such as time, cost, work burden and requirements and the logistics related to CPD activities. Regulators, professional associations, and legislators are responsible for planning and implementing actions that reduce obstacles and increase facilitators. CPD activities should also be made available through various delivery methods and strategies to guarantee relevance, prevent duplication, and promote pharmacists' involvement.

IntroductionThe misuse or abuse and dependence of medications containing codeine continue to be a major global public health concern. This study aimed to investigate the role of community pharmacists in preventing the abuse or misuse and dependence of codeine-containing analgesic drugs in Saudi Arabia.MethodsA cross-sectional study involving 226 community pharmacists from various community pharmacies across multiple cities of Saudi Arabia was conducted from 09 May 2023 to 09 October 2023. Study data were collected and managed using Research Electronic Data Capture tool. Fourteen trained data collectors visited randomly selected community pharmacies in different cities, provided pharmacists with an electronic questionnaire link, and collected their responses electronically. The dataset was downloaded in SPSS format, and analyzed for both descriptive and inferential purposes.ResultsThe primary indicators that community pharmacists considered when suspecting cases of abuse or misuse and dependence included customers who requested a larger quantity of the medication (88.5%), frequently visited the pharmacy and sought the specific medicine (82.7%), and those who took advantage of the crowd (70.8%). Pharmacists have been instrumental in preventing abuse or misuse and dependence by ensuring that medicines with abuse potential are not easily accessible to consumers (87.6%), providing alternative options (81%), reducing the dose (65%), referring patients to physicians (62.4%), and refusing to sell or denying availability (54.9%). Additionally, pharmacists primarily focused on raising public awareness (85%) as a noteworthy proportion of customers (54.9%) became desperate to obtain the drug after missing a dose. It was also suggested that community pharmacists should receive specialized training in substance abuse or misuse, as 46.9% of them lacked such training.DiscussionCommunity pharmacists, being frequently the initial point of contact easily reachable, possess the capability to greatly assist in identifying the patients and averting abuse or misuse and dependence during the dispensing of medication. Further, they can provide valuable guidance to those involved in efforts to reduce drug abuse or misuse and dependence.

Abstract Background This study aimed to assess the role of community pharmacists and their perception toward antimicrobial stewardship, in addition to identifying factors influencing their perception and practices in community pharmacy. Methods A cross‐sectional study was carried out among community pharmacists regarding antimicrobial stewardship. Convenience sampling was used to obtain the required sample from a community pharmacy in Baghdad. In total, 381 participants have completed the survey. Results The majority of the participants (85.6%) strongly agreed/agreed that “antimicrobial stewardship programs reduce the problems of antibiotic resistance”; and 85.5% of them strongly agreed/agreed that community pharmacists required adequate training on antibiotics use. In addition, high percent of community pharmacists (88.4%) strongly agreed/agreed that pharmacists have a responsibility to take a prominent role in antimicrobial stewardship programs and infection‐control programs in the health system. Good knowledge of Generic medicines (GM) among healthcare professionals including pharmacists improves the effective usage of generic medicine among patients and thus reduces their healthcare costs. The objective of this study is to assess knowledge of GM among community pharmacists in the Jaffna district of Sri Lanka. An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among all community pharmacists in the Jaffna district using a self-administered questionnaire. SPSS version 26 was used to analyze data. Independent sample t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to assess the relationship between sociodemographic and workrelated factors and knowledge of GM among community pharmacists at the 95% confidence interval and a p-value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Fifty nine pharmacists (88%) were responded to the study. The median age of pharmacists was 42 years (IQR=23) and 59.32% of them were males. The total score for knowledge of generic medicine was 55. The mean score of knowledge on generic medicine was 33.27±13.1. Age (p=0.04), professional qualification (p=0.033), and participation in the workshop (p=0.020) had significant differences with knowledge of GM. Most of the pharmacists selected generic substitutes based on the customer’s request (94.9%), followed by the quality of the generic medicine (67.8%) and familiarity of generic brands (61%). Community pharmacists lack knowledge and negatively inclined perception of GM. However, most pharmacists practice generic substitutions during dispensing. Conducting continuous professional development programs and workshops regularly and upgrading their professional qualifications to diploma or degree from certificate level could improve not only their knowledge of generic medicines but also good dispensing practice.

Abstract Background The World Health Organization identifies pharmacists as a key resource in palliative care. However, the roles of these professionals in end-of-life care at home remain poorly understood, and community pharmacists themselves sometimes struggle to recognize their true role in this care. The aim of our study was to analyze community pharmacists’ representations of their roles in palliative care at home in France. Methods The methodology was qualitative and based on semi-structured interviews with community pharmacists (n = 26). The analysis of the interviews was carried out using a qualitative content approach with thematic and lexical analysis. Results Three main elements of the community pharmacist’s role were identified: drug expertise, care management, and psychosocial support for patients and their families. Conclusions This study highlights a wide variety of roles adopted by French community pharmacists in palliative care at home. Some of these roles, which are in line with WHO recommendations on palliative care, have been little described to date. Abstract Background/Aim With the pharmaceutical innovation and clinical knowledge updating, the continuing education and on-the-job training are extremely important for improving community pharmacists’ professional competence. Previous training often adopted traditional lecture-based teaching, and the efficacy was limited. The aim of this study is to develop a new strategy for community pharmacist training. Methods Based on the BOPPPS (Bridge-in, Objective, Pre-assessment, Participatory Learning, Post-assessment and Summary) teaching model and workshop method, a continuing on-the-job training program was constructed. Participates were randomly and evenly divided into two groups by random number table method. Twenty-four community pharmacists in total completed all training contents and evaluation components in this study. Twelve pharmacists in experimental group were trained via this new BOPPPS-based workshop, while others still adopted traditional didactic lecture-based approaches. Results After training, quantitative examination combined with clinical pharmacy practice tests were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness and outcomes of two training groups. Abstract Background Human resource management may become complex for community pharmacists owing to recent changes in work volume and content. Few studies have examined job satisfaction, well-being, and quality of work life (QWL) among community pharmacists in Japan. This study focused on QWL, a more comprehensive concept than job satisfaction, and aimed to develop the QWL questionnaire for Japanese community pharmacists (the QWLQ for JCP) and assess its reliability and validity. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among 2027 pharmacists who worked in pharmacies with the cooperation of 20 corporations running pharmacies. Collected data were subjected to principal component factor analysis with Promax rotation via SPSS Windows version 28. Results The factor analysis used data from 1966 pharmacists. In total, five significant components, which formed the basis of the QWLQ for JCP, were identified. These included “Influence of work on mind and body,” “Relationships with colleagues,” “Relationship with the boss,” “Meaning of existence in the workplace,” and “Pride in work.” Cronbach’s alpha, which expressed reliability, ranged from 0.585 to 0.854 for all the subscales. Conclusion The QWLQ for the JCP significantly explained the concept of QWL, which indicated that its validity was sufficient.

Abstract Background Drug use during pregnancy can cause unfavorable fetal and maternal outcomes. Information sharing is essential for pharmacists’ role within intricate, modern healthcare systems. Community pharmacists (CPs) have demonstrated unsatisfactory knowledge across various pharmacological domains in most developing countries. This study aimed to explore the knowledge and practices of CPs regarding medications and herb safety during pregnancy. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in a developing country using a self-administered questionnaire. A sample of CPs working in the northern governorates of the West Bank was selected by convenience sampling. The questionnaire included questions on sociodemographic characteristics, practices and knowledge. Descriptive and inferential statistics were calculated using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) to analyze the data. Results A total of 207 questionnaires were completed. Most respondents had only a bachelor’s degree (89.9%) but did not participate in continuous professional development (CPD) (71.0%). Almost one-third of the CP workload involved dispensing drugs to pregnant women. The majority of the participants reported that they inquire about pregnancy status (59.9%), refer to scientific sources (82.6%), and contact a prescribing physician (51.2%) in cases of uncertainty. A higher knowledge score was associated with receiving a master’s degree and CPD programs. Most CPs identified folic acid, paracetamol and amoxicillin as safe, while tetracycline, isotretinoin, enalapril, pseudoephedrine and ibuprofen were among the drugs mostly reported as unsafe. Castor oil, Senna, St. John’s wort and ginseng were the most frequently reported herbs as unsafe. Conclusions Despite the gaps in knowledge about herb pharmacology, CPs demonstrated acceptable knowledge and practice regarding drug safety during pregnancy. CPD is recommended for addressing gaps in knowledge and practice. Future research evaluating knowledge and practice may benefit from developing a specific, accurate, validated instrument.

Background There is a global call for upscaling and optimising the role of community pharmacists (CPs) in the control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where NCDs are classified as a public health pandemic, upscaling CPs contributions has become more critical. Several contextual, professional, and educational challenges constrain the role of CPs.Objective To synthesise the perspectives of key stakeholders in the UAE healthcare system and propose a roadmap for advancing the role of CP s in controlling NCDs in the UAE.Methods This research followed a qualitative design using the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) framework for quality assurance of pharmacy profession development. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews with 28 experts and senior leaders, then analysed using the thematic analysis technique with the assistance of NVivo software.Results The analysis yielded three main themes that outlined the prospective roadmap: education, work environment, and policy. Some of the generated subthemes were establishing accredited NCD-specialised programmes, building a national framework for interprofessional education and collaboration, and upscaling the engagement of CPs in public health platforms and initiatives.Conclusion Improving the role of CPs in controlling the NCD pandemic in the UAE requires coherent and well-structured multidisciplinary endeavours from health policymakers, educational institutions, and all groups of healthcare professionals, including the CPs themselves.

ABSTRACTAdherence constitutes an integral aspect of achieving consistently good clinical results. Understanding pharmacists’ perceptions and attitudes, along with existing barriers is essential on the roadmap of enhancing patient adherence. This constitutes the goal of this study.Methodology A validated questionnaire was sent to a sample of 280 community pharmacists. Pharmacists were notified both by email and telephone. A response rate of 55% was achieved.Results Most pharmacists agree that the identification of patients’ suboptimal adherence falls under their professional responsibility and they engage in activities to promote it. There is evidence to support that the most popular interventions were self-management and indirect methods. Specific tools were used to a lesser degree. Finally, the current study illustrated that the most commonly identified barriers were the preference of patients for physicians regarding adherence, lack of information from patients and lack of time.Conclusion Although the important role of pharmacists in adherence is ascertained, significant discrepancies in the tools used to control and promote adherence among pharmacists were identified, and also in obstacles faced by themselves and their patients. The interventions should be more consistent and the notion of cooperation among health care professionals should be nurtured.

ABSTRACTObjectives: This study evaluated the level of community pharmacy professionals’ (CPPs) actual practices and contrasted it with their self-reported perceived involvement in diabetes management.Methods: A self-reported cross-sectional and simulated patient (SP)-based study were employed at community drug retail outlets (CDROs) in Northwest Ethiopia. SP-case scenarios were used to examine the actual practices of CPPs in diabetes management and were compared with self-reported perceived involvement. The data were managed and analysed using SPSS version 26.Results: About 184 participants in the self-reported and 100 CPPs’ actual practices using three SP visits were included. ABSTRACTIntroduction: Drive-thru services are not given sufficient focus in the community pharmacy setting which was highlighted during COVID-19, particularly in Malaysia. This study aimed to explore the community pharmacists’ perspectives regarding drive-thru community pharmacy service during COVID-19 in Malaysia.Methods: In-depth online semi-structured individual interviews were conducted among 25 community pharmacists working in Malaysia. All interviews were conducted between March 2022 and May 2022 and were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim, and then analysed by thematic analysis.Results: Thematic analysis yielded seven major themes, 1-familiarity with drive-thru community pharmacy service during COVID-19, 2-willingness toward this service during COVID-19, 3-perceived benefits toward drive-thru community pharmacy service during COVID-19, 4-perceived disadvantages toward this service, 5-barriers toward drive-thru community pharmacy service, 6-factors affecting the preference toward this service, and 7-facilitators to drive-thru community pharmacy service. Enhancing social distancing and preventing the spread of COVID-19 were the major perceived benefits of this service during COVID-19 as reported by participants.Conclusion: Overall, community pharmacists reported positive attitudes toward drive-thru community pharmacy service during COVID-19. However, concerns about poor communication between the pharmacist and the patient, limited counselling, and dispensing errors were acknowledged. These concerns would need to be addressed to improve the provision of drive-thru community pharmacy service.

Background Community pharmacists potentially have an important role to play in identification of frailty and delivery of interventions to optimise medicines use for frail older adults. However, little is known about their knowledge or views about this role. Aim To explore community pharmacists' knowledge of frailty and assessment, experiences and contact with frail older adults, and perceptions of their role in optimising medicines use for this population. Methods Semi-structured interviews conducted between March and December 2020 with 15 community pharmacists in Northern Ireland. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically. Results Three broad themes were generated from the data. The first, 'awareness and understanding of frailty', highlighted gaps in community pharmacists' knowledge regarding presentation and identification of frailty and their reluctance to broach potentially challenging conversations with frail older patients. Within the second theme, 'problem-solving and supporting medication use', community pharmacists felt a large part of their role was to resolve medicines-related issues for frail older adults through collaboration with other primary healthcare professionals but feedback on the outcome was often not provided upon issue resolution. The third theme, 'seizing opportunities in primary care to enhance pharmaceutical care provision for frail older adults', identified areas for further development of the community pharmacist role. Conclusions This study has provided an understanding of the views and experiences of community pharmacists about frailty. Community pharmacists' knowledge deficits about frailty must be addressed and their communication skills enhanced so they may confidently initiate conversations about frailty and medicines use with older adults. Aim: To evaluate the knowledge, practices and self‐confidence of community pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy students about infantile haemangioma (IH) and propranolol treatment. Methods: A national survey was conducted in France from May 2022 to October 2022. A 42‐item online questionnaire was used to assess pharmacists' knowledge of the epidemiology, clinical features and management of IH and propranolol treatment. Results: The survey included 255 participants. The mean age was 34.9 years (±9.0); 225 (88%) were women. In all, 193 (76%) practised in urban pharmacies. Altogether, 83 participants (33%) had delivered oral propranolol solution for IH in the last 6 months. Participants' median score for self‐confidence regarding propranolol dispensing was five (interquartile range, 2.5–6) on a scale of 1 to 10. Overall, 96 (38%) had more than 50% correct answers on the questionnaire. Multinomial regression models showed high scores on the questionnaire associated with high self‐confidence when delivering oral propranolol solution, low number of years since graduation and having already delivered propranolol treatment. Conclusion: This study highlights a lack of knowledge of IH and modalities of propranolol treatment by community pharmacists and slight self‐confidence when delivering propranolol. Background: Community pharmacists are engaged in various professional activities starting from drug dispensing to promoting the well‑being of patients. They dispense medications as stated in the prescription and are also licensed to prescribe over‑the‑counter (OTC) medications. Self‑medication is widely practiced in various countries, which may lead to irrational drug use. The objectives of this study were to identify the factors associated with dispensing errors, to find ways to minimize dispensing errors, to identify patients’ reasons for self‑medication, and to find the drugs commonly utilized by patients as OTC medications and the sources of their drug information. Methods: A cross‑sectional survey of a convenience sample of 286 registered community pharmacists all over Tabuk was conducted using a self‑administered questionnaire. Results: Physician’s unclear handwriting in the prescription was the major factor for dispensing error (2.6 out of 3) and writing the prescription clearly by the physician or using a printed form of prescription was an important factor in minimizing dispensing errors (2.91 out of 3). Previous similar complaints in the past were the main reason for self‑medication (2.45 out of 3) with analgesics and antipyretics being the commonly dispensed drug groups dispensed as OTC medications (2.95 out of 3). Conclusion: Self‑medication practices and dispensing errors are widespread in Tabuk. Antibiotics were dispensed as OTC medication, which may lead to more chance of irrational drug use. Writing the prescription clearly and legibly would reduce dispensing errors. Aim: To investigate the factors associated with introducing visiting-pharmacist services for community-dwelling older adults in Japan. Methods: We conducted a nested case-control study using claims data in a cohort from a city in Tokyo. Patients aged =65 years who received visiting-pharmacist services for the first time between April 2014 and March 2020 were considered case patients. A maximum of four controls to each case patient were randomly selected on the basis of sex, age, health insurance systems, and month-year. Medical and long-term care service usage and patient condition were assessed using claims data from the index and preceding months, along with long-term care needs certification data. Multivariable conditional logistic regression analysis was conducted to estimate the adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals for factors associated with visiting-pharmacist service introduction. Results: A total of 22 949 participants (4591 cases and 18 358 controls) were included, with a median age of 85 years; 59.3% were women. The adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of the three most related factors were 27.61 (23.98-31.80) for physicians' home visits, 5.83 (5.08-6.70) for hospitalization, and 4.97 (4.16-5.95) for designated-facility admission. Factors such as prescribing ≧10 medications, visiting nursing, and cancer were positively associated. In contrast, low household income and a high need for support due to cognitive function or disability were negatively associated. Introduction: Pursuant to the COVID-19 pandemic, an executive order issued by the New York State (NYS) governor allowed pharmacists to act as laboratory directors for a limited-service laboratory (LSL) to order and perform Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA)-waived COVID-19 point-of-care testing (POCT). Objectives: To (i) assess the status of NYS community pharmacists with POCT in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, (ii) assess the readiness and willingness of community pharmacists to incorporate COVID-19 POCT into their workflow during a pandemic, and (iii) assess community pharmacists' perception of the barrier to initiating COVID-19 POCT. Methods: This is a prospective cross-sectional study conducted from February 4 to February 21, 2021. An electronic survey consisting of 66 Likert-type questions, select all that apply, and fill-in-style questions were emailed to 250 Community Pharmacy Enhanced Service Network (CPESN) NY pharmacies, with a follow-up email sent halfway into the data collection period. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: The result indicated that most participants (median = 5) demonstrated readiness and willingness to offer COVID-19 testing. Barriers to COVID-19 POCT were identified: impact on pharmacy workflow (59%), lack of payment mechanism (55%) and lack of sufficient training (21%). Most participants expressed interest in continuing POCT beyond the pandemic (86.1%). Conclusion: Community pharmacists in NYS reported willingness to initiate COVID-19 POCT. Addressing the identified barriers, such as workflow disruption and reimbursement challenges, will enable pharmacies to be better prepared to provide patient care, including POCT. Background: Community pharmacists have played an essential health service role during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. Practices of community pharmacists against the pandemic may differ based on the specific guidance and level of preparedness in each country. Objective: This study explored the roles of community pharmacists in disease prevention, the provision of counseling services, and the supply of medications and preventive devices as well as the potential barriers and attitudes of community pharmacists towards COVID-19 infection. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted over three months (December 2021- March 2022). Online self-administered questionnaires were distributed to the community pharmacists across Thailand. Results: Of the 835 questionnaires distributed, 339 were completed (40.6%). Almost all respondents provided alcohol sanitizers inside their pharmacies (99.1%) and advised patients about how to use Antigen Test Kits (ATK) and interpret their ATK results (98.5%). The majority of respondents also provided advice to customers about ATK screening (97.6%). Respondents in chain pharmacies were more likely to provide encouragement to customers to keep social distancing (p<0.01), use preventive devices (p=0.004), and provide telepharmacy consulting services (p<0.01). Concern about contracting COVID-19 while working was the most common barrier to providing care cited by respondents (77.6%). Respondents had positive overall attitudes towards providing COVID-related counseling and believed that training programs and information support were important to the provision of COVID-19 care (82.6% and 64.6% agreed with the respective statements). Conclusion: Our findings reveal good practices among Thai community pharmacists on providing pharmacy services during the pandemic. With the recent shift in community pharmacist services toward in-person services and the growing need for centralized and continuous medication management/monitoring, pharmacist–patient information sharing is crucial. This study investigated the pharmacist–patient gap in the recognition of pharmacists' behaviors regarding information sharing and assessed the potential impact of such recognition on patient trust and willingness to self-disclose. This cross-sectional study included 600 patients (aged 21–85 years) using pharmacy services (surveyed online in December 2020) and 591 community pharmacists with ≥1 year of experience (surveyed from September to November 2021). Both groups responded to items on the recognition of pharmacists' behaviors regarding information sharing. There were patient-specific items on trust in community pharmacists and willingness to self-disclose. For all items on the recognition of pharmacists' behaviors, patients' scores were significantly lower (4–5) than pharmacists' own scores (≥5), revealing a notable perception gap. Patients' recognition had a positive, direct effect on trust and willingness, and trust had a positive, direct effect on willingness. Patients' recognition and trust positively influenced their willingness to self-disclose. Pharmacist communication with clear intent is important to bridge the gaps in pharmacist–patient recognition and foster effective patient–pharmacist relationships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
