We aimed to measure cancer‐specific incidence, mortality and survival among people diagnosed with opioid use‐related disorders in Norway during 2010–18.This was a cohort study conducted in Norway during 2010–18.Individuals (n = 20 710) diagnosed with opioid use‐related disorders.We conducted a cohort study utilizing a data‐linkage of national health and population registers. Information on opioid use‐related disorders was extracted from specialized healthcare, malignancies from the Cancer Registry of Norway and deaths from Cause of Death Registry. Cancer incidence and mortality were compared with the general population by calculating sex‐specific age‐standardized incidence (SIR) and mortality (SMR) ratios. One‐year survival rates were computed.Compared with the general population, people with opioid use‐related disorders were at an increased risk of developing cancer overall [SIR = 1.2, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.1–1.3] with a higher than twofold cancer mortality rate (SMR = 2.3, 95% CI = 2.0–2.7). Excess risk was observed for liver (12.6, 95% CI = 9.1–17.0), larynx (4.7, 95% CI = 1.7–10.2), lung (3.5, 95% CI = 2.8–4.3) and pancreas cancer (2.6, 95% CI = 1.6–4.0), whereas reduced risk was found for melanoma (0.5, 95% CI = 0.3–0.9), breast (0.6, 95% CI = 0.4–0.9) and prostate cancers (0.3, 95% CI = 0.1–0.4). Site‐specific SMRs were significantly elevated for liver (12.3, 95% CI = 8.5–17.2), lung (3.9, 95% CI = 3.0–5.0), pancreas (3.0, 95% CI = 1.7–4.8) and colon cancers (1.9, 95% CI = 1.1–3.1). The average 1‐year survival rate after a cancer diagnosis was low in liver, pancreas and colon cancer, ranging from 10 to 15% less than that of the general population.In Norway, cancer incidence and cancer‐related mortality appear to be elevated among individuals with opioid use‐related disorders. Public health measures necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic have affected cancer pathways by halting screening, delaying diagnostic tests and reducing the numbers starting treatment. Specifically, this moves individuals from observed and treated pathways to unobserved and untreated pathways. We introduce a semi-Markov model that includes both, extending an industry-based multiple state model used for life and critical illness insurance. Our model includes events related to cancer diagnosis and progression based on publicly available population data for women aged 65–89 in England and on relevant medical literature. We quantify age-specific excess deaths, for a period up to 5 years, along with years of life expectancy lost and changes in cancer mortality by cancer stage. Our analysis suggests a 3–6% increase in breast cancer deaths, and a 4–6% increase in registrations of advanced breast cancer, robust under sensitivity analysis. We further explored the effect of oophorectomy on the association between hysterectomy and these health outcomes.PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science were searched up to 24 July 2023.Cohort studies.Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were pooled using a random‐effects model. We used I2 to assess the heterogeneity between studies.Forty‐three studies were included in the meta‐analysis. Hysterectomy was significantly associated with an increased risk of CVD (pooled HR 1.11, 95% CI 1.09–1.13; n = 6; I2 = 0) and stroke (HR 1.09, 95% CI 1.04–1.14; n = 7; I2 = 52%), but with a decreased risk of cancer mortality (HR 0.93, 95% CI 0.86–1.00; n = 4; I2 = 81%). No significant association was observed between hysterectomy and CHD (n = 10; I2 = 83%), all‐cause mortality (n = 8; I2 = 81%) or cardiovascular mortality (n = 7; I2 = 89%). Hysterectomy with and without oophorectomy was significantly associated with CVD and stroke risk, but showed a larger effect size for hysterectomy with oophorectomy. A significantly increased risk of CHD was observed in the subgroup of hysterectomy with oophorectomy, but not for the subgroup of hysterectomy alone.Hysterectomy may increase the risk of CVD, CHD and stroke, but not all‐cause, cardiovascular or cancer mortality. Hysterectomy with oophorectomy may have a higher risk of CVD, CHD and stroke than hysterectomy alone. Background: This study explored the association of cardiovascular disease (CVD) with cancer mortality risk in individuals with or without a history of cancer, to better understand the interplay between CVD and cancer outcomes. Methods: Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 1999 to 2018, a retrospective cohort analysis was conducted. This analysis accounted for the survey's complex design to ensure national representativeness. The association of CVD with cancer mortality was assessed through multivariable Cox proportional hazards models. Results: The present study included 59,653 participants, of whom 54,095 did not have cancer and 5558 had a history of cancer. In individuals without cancer, heart failure (HF) was associated with an increased risk of mortality from cancer (HR, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.09–1.69; P = 0.005). In participants with cancer, HF correlated with a higher risk of mortality from cancer (HR, 1.76; 95% CI, 1.32–2.34; P < 0.001). Diabetes (DM), hypertension (HBP) and coronary heart disease (CHD) were not significantly associated with an increased risk of mortality from cancer. Significant differences were observed in the interaction between cancer and CHD (HR, 0.68; 95% CI, 0.53–0.87; P = 0.002). For cancer and HBP, a similar trend was noted (HR, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.62–0.91; P = 0.003). No significant differences were found in interactions between HF, DM and cancer. Conclusions: HF was associated with an increased risk of mortality from cancer, regardless of cancer history, while HBP, CHD and DM showed no significant association. Simple Summary: This article discusses a common approach to the early detection of oral cancer, which focuses on identifying and monitoring certain mouth conditions, known as oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs). However, despite this strategy, the death rates from cancers of the lip and mouth have not improved in 30 years. Surprisingly, only around 10% of oral cancers actually start as premalignant, and most OPMDs rarely turn into cancer. The article suggests that only a few specific types of these disorders, which have a higher risk of becoming cancerous and/or are prevalent in populations, really need intervention. It also questions the effectiveness of regarding OPMDs as heralding malignancy and calls for a different approach to reduce deaths for oral cancer. Despite the profession placing great emphasis on oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) as a gateway for early recognition and consequently better outcomes for oral cancer, the death rates for lip and oral cavity cancer have remained stagnant for three decades. Evidence shows that only a small fraction of oral cancers are in fact preceded by OPMDs, and that most OPMDs have an annual transformation rate of less than 1%. As OPMDs encompass a very heterogeneous group of oral conditions, it could be argued that only patients with oral mucosal diseases bearing a substantial risk of malignant transformation warrant close surveillance and treatment, these include proliferative leukoplakia, erythroplakia, non-homogeneous leukoplakia, as well as diseases presenting with severe dysplasia at biopsy. In this narrative review, I discuss the intricate epidemiology of the malignancies that we colloquially refer to as oral cancer, explore the limitations of focusing on OPMDs to reduce the incidence and mortality of oral cavity cancer, and argue that a may-be cancer label represents overdiagnosis for most OPMDs. Aim: To determine the associations between the Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) and the risks of all‐cause and cause‐specific mortality. Materials and Methods: A total of 3 916 214 Chinese adults were enrolled in a nationwide population cohort covering all 31 provinces of mainland China. The CVAI was calculated based on age, body mass index, waist circumference, and triglyceride and high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations. We used a Cox proportional hazards regression model to determine the hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for risk of mortality associated with different CVAI levels. Results: The median follow‐up duration was 3.8 years. A total of 86 158 deaths (34 867 cardiovascular disease [CVD] deaths, 29 884 cancer deaths, and 21 407 deaths due to other causes) were identified. In general, after adjusting for potential confounding factors, a U‐shaped relationship between CVAI and all‐cause mortality was observed by restricted cubic spline (RCS). Compared with participants in CVAI quartile 1, those in CVAI quartile 4 had a 23.0% (95% CI 20.0%–25.0%) lower risk of cancer death, but a 23.0% (95% CI 19.0–27.0) higher risk of CVD death. In subgroup analysis, a J‐shaped and inverted U‐shaped relationship for all‐cause mortality and cancer mortality was observed in the group aged < 60 years. Conclusions: The CVAI, an accessible indicator reflecting visceral obesity among Chinese adults, has predictive value for all‐cause, CVD, and cancer mortality risks. Background: Active surveillance (AS), where treatment is deferred until cancer progression is detected by a biopsy, is acknowledged as a way to reduce overtreatment in prostate cancer. However, a consensus on the frequency of taking biopsies while in AS is lacking. In former studies to optimize biopsy schedules, the delay in progression detection was taken as an evaluation indicator and believed to be associated with the long‐term outcome, prostate cancer mortality. Nevertheless, this relation was never investigated in empirical data. Here, we use simulated data from a microsimulation model to fill this knowledge gap. Methods: In this study, the established MIcrosimulation SCreening Analysis model was extended with functionality to simulate the AS procedures. The biopsy sensitivity in the model was calibrated on the Canary Prostate Cancer Active Surveillance Study (PASS) data, and four (tri‐yearly, bi‐yearly, PASS, and yearly) AS programs were simulated. The relation between detection delay and prostate cancer mortality was investigated by Cox models. Results: The biopsy sensitivity of progression detection was found to be 50%. The Cox models show a positive relation between a longer detection delay and a higher risk of prostate cancer death. A 2‐year delay resulted in a prostate cancer death risk of 2.46%–2.69% 5 years after progression detection and a 10‐year risk of 5.75%–5.91%. A 4‐year delay led to an approximately 8% greater 5‐year risk and an approximately 25% greater 10‐year risk. Conclusion: The detection delay is confirmed as a surrogate for prostate cancer mortality. Background: Socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with a range of health outcomes, including cancer diagnosis and survival. However, the evidence for this association is inconsistent between countries with and without single‐payer health care systems. In this study, the relationships between neighborhood‐level income, cancer stage at diagnosis, and cancer‐specific mortality in Alberta, Canada, were evaluated. Methods: The Alberta Cancer Registry was used to identify all primary cancer diagnoses between 2010 and 2020. Average neighborhood income was determined by linking the Canadian census to postal codes and was categorized into quintiles on the basis of income distribution in Alberta. Multivariable multinomial logistic regression was used to model the association between income quintile and stage at diagnosis, and the Fine–Gray proportional subdistribution hazards model was used to estimate the association between SES and cancer‐specific mortality. Results: Out of the 143,818 patients with cancer included in the study, those in lower income quintiles were significantly more likely to be diagnosed at stage III (odds ratio [OR], 1.07; 95% CI [confidence interval], 1.06–1.09) or IV (OR, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.11–1.14) after adjusting for age and sex. Lower income quintiles also had significantly worse cancer‐specific survival for breast, colorectal, liver, lung, non‐Hodgkin lymphoma, oral cavity, pancreas, and prostate cancers. Conclusions: Disparities were observed in cancer outcomes across neighborhood‐level income groups in Alberta, which demonstrates that health inequities by SES exist in countries with single‐payer health care systems. Further research is needed to better understand the underlying causes and to develop strategies to mitigate these disparities. Background: Previous studies have shown an association between living alone and cancer mortality; however, findings by sex and race/ethnicity have generally been inconsistent, and data by socioeconomic status are sparse. The association between living alone and cancer mortality by sex, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status in a nationally representative US cohort was examined. Methods: Pooled 1998–2019 data for adults aged 18–64 years at enrollment from the National Health Interview Survey linked to the National Death Index (N = 473,648) with up to 22 years of follow‐up were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) for the association between living alone and cancer mortality. Results: Compared to adults living with others, adults living alone were at a higher risk of cancer death in the age‐adjusted model (HR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.25–1.39) and after additional adjustments for multiple sociodemographic characteristics and cancer risk factors (HR, 1.10; 95% CI, 1.04–1.16). Age‐adjusted models stratified by sex, poverty level, and educational attainment showed similar associations between living alone and cancer mortality, but the association was stronger among non‐Hispanic White adults (HR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.25–1.42) than non‐Hispanic Black adults (HR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.05–1.32; p value for difference <.05) and did not exist in other racial/ethnic groups. These associations were attenuated but persisted in fully adjusted models among men (HR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.05–1.23), women (HR, 1.09; 95% CI, 1.01–1.18), non‐Hispanic White adults (HR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.05–1.20), and adults with a college degree (HR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.07–1.39). Conclusions: In this nationally representative study in the United States, adults living alone were at a higher risk of cancer death in several sociodemographic groups. In a nationally representative study with up to 22 years of mortality follow‐up, US working‐age adults experiencing social isolation, measured as living alone, were at a higher risk of cancer death than adults living with others. This association persisted among non‐Hispanic White adults and adults with higher education even after accounting for differences in a wide range of sociodemographic, behavioral, and health characteristics. Cervical cancer (CC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among females in Ghana. Despite the magnitude of the public health challenge posed by CC in Ghana, survival data as well as reported incidence and mortality rates are primarily based on studies conducted in the capital city of the country. Even though age at diagnosis is known to affect the overall survival of CC patients, the role of this factor in the prognosis of CC patients in Ghana has not been sufficiently explored. The aim of this study was to determine the 5-year survival rate of Ghanaian woman treated for CC at a large tertiary healthcare facility in Ghana. This research was a single-institution-based quantitative retrospective cohort study conducted among patients with histopathologically confirmed CC. Clinical and socio-demographic data were retrieved from patients' medical records. Data analysis was done using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software version 23. Kaplan Meier curves were used to present the survival rates and median survival time. The peak age at diagnosis was between 45 and 80 years with the modal age group of patients between 75 and 80 years. The mean age at diagnosis was 63.3 ± 15.7 years ranging from 27 to 104 years. The overall survival rates at 1, 3 and 5 years were 76.5%, 51.5% and 32.4%, respectively. The median survival time was 65.8 months. Age < 50 years was associated with higher survival estimates than age >50 years. The 5-year overall survival rate of CC patients reported in this study (32.4%) is relatively low compared with countries in the developed world but like previous reports at other healthcare facilities in Ghana as well as in other underdeveloped countries. Simple Summary: Cancer is a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality worldwide. The purpose of this study was to analyze the cancer burden and trends of 29 groups of malignant neoplasms in Mexico by sex and age from 1990 to 2019. In 2019, there were 222.1 thousand incident cases and 105.6 thousand deaths due to cancer in the general population. The number of new cases and deaths from the 29 cancer groups increased between 10% and 436% from 1990 to 2019, with different patterns by sex and age. Breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers were the leading causes of death among women, while prostate, lung, and colorectal cancers were the leading causes of death among men. In Mexico, malignant neoplasms were the third leading cause of death in 2019, causing significant health loss. The existence of gender disparities emphasizes the need for cancer-specific targeted prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The global burden of cancer is on the rise, with varying national patterns. To gain a better understanding and control of cancer, it is essential to provide national estimates. Therefore, we present a comparative description of cancer incidence and mortality rates in Mexico from 1990 to 2019, by age and sex for 29 different cancer groups. Based on public data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, we evaluated the national burden of cancer by analyzing counts and crude and age-standardized rates per 100,000 people with 95% uncertainty intervals for 2019 and trends using the annual percentage change from 1990 to 2019. In 2019, cancer resulted in 222,060 incident cases and 105,591 deaths. In 2019, the highest incidence of cancer was observed in non-melanoma skin cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer. Additionally, 53% of deaths were attributed to six cancer groups (lung, colorectal, stomach, prostate, breast, and pancreatic). From 1990 to 2019, there was an increasing trend in incidence and mortality rates, which varied by 10–436% among cancer groups. Furthermore, there were cancer-specific sex differences in crude and age-standardized rates. The results show an increase in the national cancer burden with sex-specific patterns of change. This article aims to analyze the effects of cancer mortality on life expectancy at birth in 15 European high-income countries between 1950 and 2019. To establish the 1950-2019 time series of deaths from cancer, mortality data were harmonized from the available datasets of the World Health Organization Mortality database, coded according to the International Classification of Diseases of the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th editions. The estimation of the cancer mortality effect on the life expectancy at birth was performed using the algorithm of stepwise replacement for the life expectancy decomposition. The increase in cancer mortality contributed to a decline in overall life expectancy growth until the mid-1990s, coinciding with the aging cohorts of heavy smokers and a long-term reduction in mortality from other non-communicable diseases. Subsequently, since the 1990s, the reduction in cancer mortality has contributed to a significant increase in life expectancy at birth, especially in males. Reduction in cancer mortality was the outcome of various factors, such as alcohol and tobacco control policies, advances in cancer prevention and its treatment, general increase in population well-being, and reduction in risk-factors. To determine the incidence of all-cause and cancer mortality (CM) in association with immunosuppression. Retrospective cohort study at ocular inflammatory disease (OID) subspecialty centers. We harvested exposure and covariate data retrospectively from clinic inception (earliest in 1979) through 2010 inclusive. Then we ascertained overall and cancer-specific mortalities by National Death Index linkage. We constructed separate Cox models to evaluate overall and CM for each class of immunosuppressant and for each individual immunosuppressant compared with person-time unexposed to any immunosuppression. Patients with noninfectious OID, excluding those with human immunodeficiency infection or preexisting cancer. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors (mostly infliximab, adalimumab, and etanercept); antimetabolites (methotrexate, mycophenolate mofetil, azathioprine); calcineurin inhibitors (cyclosporine); and alkylating agents (cyclophosphamide) were given when clinically indicated in this noninterventional cohort study. Overall mortality and CM. Over 187 151 person-years (median follow-up 10.0 years), during which 15 938 patients were at risk for mortality, we observed 1970 deaths, 435 due to cancer. Both patients unexposed to immunosuppressants (standardized mortality ratio [SMR] = 0.95, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.90–1.01) and those exposed to immunosuppressants but free of systemic inflammatory diseases (SIDs) (SMR = 1.04, 95% CI, 0.95–1.14) had similar mortality risk to the US population. Comparing patients exposed to TNF inhibitors, antimetabolites, calcineurin inhibitors, and alkylating agents with patients not exposed to any of these, we found that overall mortality (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 0.88, 0.89, 0.90, 1.11) and CM (aHR = 1.25, 0.89, 0.86, 1.23) were not significantly increased. These results were stable in sensitivity analyses whether excluding or including patients with SID, across 0-, 3-, or 5-year lags and across quartiles of immunosuppressant dose and duration. Our results, in a cohort where the indication for treatment was proven unassociated with mortality risk, found that commonly used immunosuppressants—especially the antimetabolites methotrexate, mycophenolate mofetil, and azathioprine; the TNF inhibitors adalimumab and infliximab, and cyclosporine—were not associated with increased overall and CM over a median cohort follow-up of 10.0 years. These results suggest the safety of these agents with respect to overall and CM for patients treated with immunosuppression for a wide range of inflammatory diseases. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has a rising global prevalence. However, the understanding of its impact on mortality remains inconsistent so we explored the association between IBD and all-cause and cause-specific mortality. This study included 502,369 participants from the UK Biobank, a large, population-based, prospective cohort study with mortality data through 2022. IBD was defined by baseline self-report or from primary care or hospital admission data. We estimated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all-cause and cause-specific mortality in multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models. A total of 5799 (1.2%) participants had a history of IBD at baseline. After a median follow-up of 13.7 years, 44,499 deaths occurred. Having IBD was associated with an increased risk of death from all causes (HR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.07–1.24) and cancer (HR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.05–1.30), particularly colorectal cancer (CRC) (HR = 1.56, 95% CI = 1.17–2.09). We observed elevated breast cancer mortality rates for individuals with Crohn's disease, and increased CRC mortality rates for individuals with ulcerative colitis. In stratified analyses of IBD and all-cause mortality, mortality risk differed by individuals' duration of IBD, age at IBD diagnosis, body mass index (BMI) (P Heterogeneity = 0.03) and smoking status (P Heterogeneity = 0.01). Positive associations between IBD and all-cause mortality were detected in individuals diagnosed with IBD for 10 years or longer, those diagnosed before the age of 50, all BMI subgroups except obese individuals, and in never or current, but not former smokers. We found that having IBD was associated with increased risks of mortality from all causes, all cancers, and CRC. Background Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is believed to be associated with an increased risk for cancer, especially urinary tract cancer. However, previous studies predominantly focused on the association of decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with cancer. In this study, we investigated the association of albuminuria with cancer incidence, adjusted for eGFR. Methods We included 8490 subjects in the Prevention of Renal and Vascular End-stage Disease (PREVEND) observational study. Urinary albumin excretion (UAE) was measured in two 24-hour urine specimens at baseline. Primary outcomes were the incidence of overall and urinary tract cancer. Secondary outcomes were the incidence of other site-specific cancers, and mortality due to overall, urinary tract, and other site-specific cancers. Results Median baseline UAE was 9.4 (IQR, 6.3–17.8) mg/24 h. During a median follow-up of 17.7 years, 1341 subjects developed cancer (of which 177 were urinary tract cancers). After multivariable adjustment including eGFR, every doubling of UAE was associated with a 6% (hazard ratios (HR), 1.06, 95% confidence intervals (CI), 1.02–1.10), and 14% (HR, 1.14, 95% CI, 1.04–1.24) higher risk of overall and urinary tract cancer incidence, respectively. Except for lung and hematological cancer, no associations were found between UAE and the incidence of other site-specific cancer. Doubling of UAE was also associated with a higher risk of mortality due to overall and lung cancer. We develop a functional proportional hazards mixture cure model with scalar and functional covariates measured at the baseline. The mixture cure model, useful in studying populations with a cure fraction of a particular event of interest is extended to functional data. We employ the expectation–maximization algorithm and develop a semiparametric penalized spline-based approach to estimate the dynamic functional coefficients of the incidence and the latency part. The proposed method is computationally efficient and simultaneously incorporates smoothness in the estimated functional coefficients via roughness penalty. Simulation studies illustrate a satisfactory performance of the proposed method in accurately estimating the model parameters and the baseline survival function. Finally, the clinical potential of the model is demonstrated in two real data examples that incorporate rich high-dimensional biomedical signals as functional covariates measured at the baseline and constitute novel domains to apply cure survival models in contemporary medical situations. In particular, we analyze (i) minute-by-minute physical activity data from the National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey 2003–2006 to study the association between diurnal patterns of physical activity at baseline and all cancer mortality through 2019 while adjusting for other biological factors; (ii) the impact of daily functional measures of disease severity collected in the intensive care unit on post intensive care unit recovery and mortality event. Our findings provide novel epidemiological insights into the association between daily patterns of physical activity and cancer mortality. The impact of cancer in Alberta is expected to grow considerably, largely driven by population growth and aging. The Future of Cancer Impact (FOCI) initiative offers an overview of the present state of cancer care in Alberta and highlights potential opportunities for research and innovation across the continuum. In this paper, we present a series of detailed projections and analyses regarding cancer epidemiological estimates in Alberta, Canada. Data on cancer incidence and mortality in Alberta (1998–2018) and limited-duration cancer prevalence in Alberta (2000–2019) were collected from the Alberta Cancer Registry. We used the Canproj package in the R software to project these epidemiological estimates up to the year 2040. To estimate the direct management costs, we ran a series of microsimulations using the OncoSim All Cancers Model. Our findings indicate that from 2020, the total number of annual new cancer cases and cancer-related deaths are projected to increase by 56% and 49% by 2040, respectively. From 2019, the five-year prevalence of all cancers in Alberta is projected to increase by 86% by 2040. In line with these trends, the overall direct cost of cancer management is estimated to increase by 53% in 2040. Objectives: Studies on cancer incidence and mortality in patients with schizophrenia have reported inconsistent findings. In this study, we simultaneously investigated cancer incidence and mortality in patients with schizophrenia and evaluated the cancer mortality‐to‐incidence ratio (MIR), which is rare in the literature. Methods: From the Taiwan National Health Insurance Database, we collected the data of 107,489 patients who received a diagnosis of schizophrenia between 2000 and 2019. Data regarding cancer incidence and mortality were obtained from the Taiwan Cancer Registry and National Mortality Database, respectively. In total, 3881 incident cancer cases and 2288 cancer mortality cases were identified. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs), mortality rate ratios (MRRs), and MIRs were compared between patients with schizophrenia and the general population. Results: The overall rate of cancer incidence was slightly lower (SIR: 0.95; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.92–0.98; p < 0.001) and that of cancer mortality was higher (MRR: 1.29; 95% CI: 1.23–1.3; p < 0.001) in patients with schizophrenia than in the general population. The MIR for overall cancer was significantly higher in the patients with schizophrenia. The relative MIR (MIR of patients with schizophrenia divided by that of the general population) was 1.36 (95% CI: 1.30–1.42). Conclusion: The MIR was significantly higher in the patients with schizophrenia than in the general population, indicating the possible presence of healthcare disparities. Simple Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic may have impacted cancer mortality rates by disrupting patient health behaviors and access to cancer care, as well as being directly affected by infection with SARS-CoV-2. There is limited population-based research that investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer mortality in the United States. The aim of our retrospective study was to quantify the change in cancer mortality from before the COVID-19 pandemic to during the COVID-19 pandemic in Pennsylvania. We found that mortality rates did not continue their previous downward trajectory and twenty-six counties had an increase in the rate in 2020. The 2015–2019 rates were positively associated with the 2020 rates, and the impact of sociodemographic and geographic factors on the 2020 rates varied by county. Our findings suggest a negative effect of the pandemic on cancer mortality in Pennsylvania and had a varied effect on its counties. Future research could confirm our findings, and if confirmed, may inform cancer research, care, and outreach. Background. We sought to quantify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer mortality and identify associated factors in Pennsylvania. Methods. The retrospective study analyzed cross-sectional cancer mortality data from CDC WONDER for 2015 through 2020 for Pennsylvania and its 67 counties. The spatial distributions of 2019, 2020, and percentage change in age-adjusted mortality rates by county were analyzed via choropleth maps and spatial autocorrelation. A Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was used to analyze whether the rates differed between 2019 and 2020. Quasi-Poisson and geographically weighted regression at the county level were used to assess the association between the 2019 rates, sex (percent female), race (percent non-White), ethnicity (percent Hispanic/Latino), rural–urban continuum codes, and socioeconomic status with the 2020 rates. Results. At the state level, the rate in 2020 did not reflect the declining annual trend (−2.7 per 100,000) in the rate since 2015. Twenty-six counties had an increase in the rate in 2020. Of the factors examined, the 2019 rates were positively associated with the 2020 rates, and the impact of sociodemographic and geographic factors on the 2020 rates varied by county. Conclusions. In Pennsylvania, the 2020 cancer mortality rates did not decline as much as reported before the COVID-19 pandemic. The top five cancer types by rate were the same type for 2019 and 2020. Cervical, liver and stomach cancers are the most common infection-associated malignancies and the leading cause of morbidity in non-Western regions. We compared the incidence and mortality of these cancers between non-Western immigrant and non-immigrant Nordic female populations. We also analysed the effect of age at immigration, duration of residence and education on cancer burden. Study population consisted of women residents in Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway in 1973–2020. Non-Western women contributed 3.1% of the total 260 million person-years at risk. All women were followed from their 20th birthday, or from the date of immigration if after, until the date of their first primary cancer diagnosis, death, emigration, or the end of the country-specific study period. All data were adjusted for 10-year age groups and calendar periods, and immigrant data was further broken down by region of birth, age at immigration and education level. Country-specific estimates were produced by multivariable Poisson regression and pooled in Finland with a random effects model. Altogether, there were 60 982 cases of cervical, liver and stomach cancer in the study population, causing 36 582 deaths. The immigrant women had significantly higher liver (rate ratio [RR] 1.78, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03–3.06) and stomach cancer incidence (RR 1.68, CI 1.29–2.18), and stomach cancer mortality (RR 1.49, CI 1.17–1.92) than non-immigrant women. In the immigrant population, high education was related to lower incidence and mortality of studied cancers. The rate ratio of cervical cancer decreased with duration of residence and increased with rising age at immigration. Due to the increased incidence and mortality of infection-related cancers and changes in cancer patterns by age at immigration and duration of residence, attention should be paid to targeted health care services for immigrants. Objective: There are studies on the nutritional status of type 2 diabetes (T2D), but there are no large cohort studies on the prognosis of Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score for T2D. The aim of this study was to examine the association between CONUT score and all-cause mortality as well as cancer mortality in adults with T2D. Methods: For this study, we analyzed a total of 3763 adult patients with T2D who were part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2018. Mortality outcomes were determined by linking to the National Death Index records as of December 31, 2019. Cox proportional risk models were used to estimate risk ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for all-cause and cancer deaths. Results: During the mean follow-up of 8.17 years, there were 823 deaths from all causes and 155 deaths from cancer. After adjusting for multiple variables, the risk of all-cause mortality was higher in patients with a Mild (CONUT score ≥ 2), compared with patients with a Normal (CONUT score of 0–1). All-cause mortality risk was 39% higher, and cancer mortality risk was 45% higher. Consistent results were observed when stratified by age, sex, race, BMI, smoking status, and glycated hemoglobin levels. Background: Cancer risk varies geographically, and migrants are influenced by different risk factors before, during and after migration. Increased migration from non-Western countries to the Nordic countries calls for a better understanding of the migrants' cancer risk and the change in risk patterns over time. The aim of this study was to compare the incidence and mortality of breast, colorectal and lung cancer between non-Western immigrant and the native female population in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and Norway. Material and methods: Data from national registries were processed and pre-analysed in each country. Multivariate Poisson regression models were used to model the relative differences in incidence and mortality as rate ratios (RR). The country-specific estimates and summary statistics were pooled together using a random effects model. Results: Non-Western immigrant women had significantly lower breast (RR 0.71, 0.65–0.78), colorectal (RR 0.72, 0.57–0.92) and lung (RR 0.55, 0.42–0.72) cancer incidence rates than native women, and the risk of these cancers among immigrant women increased with duration of residence. Differences were parallel in breast, colorectal and lung cancer mortality (RR 0.64, 0.55–0.74; RR 0.66, 0.48–0.92; RR 0.51, 0.34–0.79). Among immigrant women, higher education increased the risk for breast cancer and decreased it for lung cancer. Conclusion: The results significantly complement and add to the previous findings of cancer burden and cancer burden transition among migrants and provide evidence of a prolonged cancer risk advantage among non-Western immigrant women. However, the findings show an increasing risk of lifestyle-related cancers with increasing duration of residence in the host country. Purpose: Cancer is a leading cause of death in the Caribbean, and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is no exception. Evidence suggests that cancer incidence and mortality may vary based on demographic factors across the different cancer types. This study aimed to investigate the incidence and mortality trends associated with cancer cases in Trinidad and Tobago for the period 2008–2018, across different age groups, gender, and ethnicity. Methods: Data on 15,029 incident cancer cases were reported to the Dr. Elizabeth Quamina Cancer Registry between 2008 and 2018. The retrospective data were analyzed by sex, ancestry, and age, and were reported using Trinidad and Tobago population statistics for the period 2008–2018. Results: The incidence of prostate and breast cancers was high among males and females, respectively. Among males, the highest cancer mortality was associated with prostate, lung, colon, blood, and pancreatic cancers, respectively. Among females, the highest cancer mortality was associated with breast, ovary, colon, blood, and pancreatic cancers. The frequency of occurrence of the top five cancer sites was the highest among Afro-Trinidadians followed by Indo-Trinidadians. Most females diagnosed with breast cancer were at a localized stage, while most males diagnosed with breast cancer were at a distant or regional stage. Most individuals diagnosed with blood cancer were at a distant stage. For lung and colon cancer, the stage of diagnosis for most males and females was either distant or unknown. Majority of males are diagnosed with prostate cancer at an unknown stage. Conclusions: The findings indicate highest cancer incidence and mortality occur among Afro-Trinidadians. Background: Kidney function is associated with clinical outcomes in patients with cancer. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the association between kidney function decline and cancer‐related mortality among community‐dwelling elderly individuals. Design: This was a retrospective longitudinal cohort study. Participants: The 61,988 participants were from an elderly health examination database in Taipei City from 2005 to 2012. Measurements Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the association between baseline covariates and rapidly deteriorating estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). In addition, Cox proportional hazards model and the Fine–Gray model were used to quantify the effects of covariates on total cancer mortality and six specific cancer mortalities. Results: During the follow‐up period, 1482 participants died of cancer. Their baseline average eGFR was 73.8 ± 19.9 mL/min/1.73 m2, and 18.3% had rapid renal function decline (≥5 mL/min/1.73 m2 per year). Rapid renal function decline was positively related to age, baseline eGFR, proteinuria, hypertension, waist circumferences, high log triglyceride levels, and diabetes mellitus (DM) history. In Cox proportional hazard models, participants with rapid eGFR decline had an increased risk of cancer mortality [hazard ratio (95% CI): 1.97 (1.73, 2.24); p < 0.001] compared to those without rapid eGFR decline. In the analysis of site‐specific cancer mortality risk, rapid eGFR decline was associated with six site‐specific cancer mortality, namely gastrointestinal tract, hepatobiliary, lung, prostate, urinary tract, and hematological malignancies. Conclusions: Elderly individuals with rapid kidney function decline had higher cancer mortality risks. Aim: To estimate the risk of cancer incidence and mortality among patients with alcoholic liver disease in South Korea. Methods: A matched cohort study was conducted, including 1,042,185 men (alcoholic liver disease cases: 208,437; controls: 833,748) and 100,400 women (alcoholic liver disease cases: 20,080; controls: 80,320), matched for sex, age, smoking, alcohol consumption, and body mass index at a 1:4 ratio. The risk of cancer incidence and mortality in the alcoholic liver disease group was assessed using Cox proportional hazards regression models. Results: Both men and women with alcoholic liver disease had an elevated risk of all‐cancer and liver cancer incidence and mortality in comparison with the control group. In men, alcoholic liver disease was associated with a significantly higher risk of development of 10 cancer types, including lip, oral cavity, and pharynx; esophagus; liver; gallbladder and biliary tract; pancreas; larynx; lung; kidney; thyroid gland; and leukemia. Subgroup analysis by hepatitis B and C infection showed increased hazard ratios of all cancer incidences and mortality in the alcoholic liver disease group, regardless of hepatitis B or C infection status. In both sexes, a higher number and more years of hospital or clinic visits for alcoholic liver disease were associated with an increased risk of incidence and mortality from all cancers and liver cancer. A more profound dose–response relationship between alcoholic liver disease and alcohol consumption was observed in women than in men. Background: Klotho has both anticancer and hormone‐like functions. But the research on Klotho and cancer is mainly based on animal experiments and small‐scale clinical research, thus we explored the association between serum Klotho and cancer and cancer mortality based on the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES). Methods: Participants were employed from the NHANES 2007–2016, excluding pregnant, chronic renal insufficiency, and incomplete data of cancer questionnaire and serum Klotho level. The association of serum Klotho with cancer and mortality was analyzed by weighted Logistic regression, weighted Cox regression and competitive risk model, respectively. Correlations between serum Klotho and testosterone and estradiol levels were analyzed by Spearman correlation and restricted cubic spline respectively. Results: We found Klotho had an inverse effect with risk of pan‐cancer (all p < 0.02), with each unit increase in Klotho (1ug/g creatinine) associated with a 0.9%–2.2% reduction in the risk of cancer, and higher levels showing a stronger negative association (all p‐trend <= 0.0005). Whereas, we did not observe any association between serum Klotho level with all‐cause mortality and cancer‐specific mortality (all p > 0.05). Then, stratified analysis found that people aged 60–79, female, overweight and non‐Hispanic whites or Mexican Americans were less likely to develop cancer. In addition, there was a strong nonlinear and linear positive correlation of Klotho with estradiol (p‐nonlinear = 0.0178) and testosterone only among male participants (β = −0.513, p = 0.0137), respectively. Conclusions: We found an inverse association between serum Klotho and cancer, but without cancer mortality. And this effect may be partially mediated by estradiol and testosterone. Simple Summary: We analyzed the long-term mortality trends and their Age-Period-cohort effects for overall cancer and its 10 sub-types in China. The results show that the overall cancer ASMR has declined, but the absolute cancer cases kept increasing due to the growing elderly population, with the death rates for almost all types of cancer among older Chinese continued to rise during the past three decades. The birth cohort RRs peaked in 1920–1930 and tended to decline in successive cohorts for most cancers except for leukemia, lung cancer in rural, and breast and cervical cancer in females, whose relative risks were rising in the very recent cohorts. The rising mortality related to lung, colorectal, breast and cervical cancer and the increasing burden of cancer death in rural areas should receive higher priority in managing cancer burden and calls for targeted public health actions to reverse the trend. Background: China has the highest number of new cancer cases and deaths worldwide, posing huge health and economic burdens to society and affected families. This study comprehensively analyzed secular trends of national cancer mortality statistics to inform future prevention and intervention programs in China. Methods: The annual estimate of overall cancer mortality and its major subtypes were derived from the National Health Commission (NHC). Joinpoint analysis was used to detect changes in trends, and we used age-period-cohort modeling to estimate cohort and period effects in Cancers between 1987 and 2020. Net drift (overall annual percentage change), local drift (annual percentage change in each age group), longitudinal age curves (expected longitudinal age-specific rate), and period (cohort) relative risks were calculated. Results: The age-standardized cancer mortality in urban China has shown a steady downward trend but has not decreased significantly in rural areas. Almost all cancer deaths in urban areas have shown a downward trend, except for colorectal cancer in men. Decreasing mortality from cancers in rural of the stomach, esophagus, liver, leukemia, and nasopharynx was observed, while lung, colorectal cancer female breast, and cervical cancer mortality increased. Birth cohort risks peaked in the cohorts born around 1920–1930 and tended to decline in successive cohorts for most cancers except for leukemia, lung cancer in rural, and breast and cervical cancer in females, whose relative risks were rising in the very recent cohorts. In addition, mortality rates for almost all types of cancer in older Chinese show an upward trend. Conclusions: Although the age-standardized overall cancer mortality rate has declined, and the urban-rural gap narrowed, the absolute cancer cases kept increasing due to the growing elderly population in China. Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is inherently a complex immune-inflammatory condition, and heightened inflammation and immune dysfunction are closely related to an increased risk of death. However, evidence regarding the relationship between immune-inflammatory levels and all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality among patients with CKD is scarce. Methods: Patients with non-dialysis dependent CKD undergoing coronary angiography (CAG) were included from five Chinese tertiary hospitals. Systemic immune inflammation index (SII) was calculated by multiplying peripheral platelet count with neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and patients were categorized into four groups by SII quartiles. Cox regression models and competing risk Fine and Gray models were used to examining the relationships between SII levels and all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality. Results: A total of the 19,327 patients (68.8 ± 10.03 years, female 32.0%) were included in this study. During a median follow-up of 4.5 years, 5,174 deaths occurred, including 2,861 cardiovascular deaths and 375 cancer deaths. Controlling for confounders, all-cause mortality (Q2, Q3, Q4: hazard ratio(HR) [95 CI%] = 1.15 [1.06–1.26], 1.30 [1.19–1.42], 1.48 [1.35–1.62], respectively; p for trend < 0.001) and cardiovascular mortality (Q2, Q3, Q4: HR [95 CI%] = 1.16 [1.03–1.31], 1.40 [1.24–1.58], 1.64 [1.44–1.85], respectively; p for trend < 0.001) increased with higher SII levels, and SII levels was related to cancer mortality comparing last quartile to first quartile of SII (Q2, Q3, Q4: HR [95 CI%] = 1.12 [0.83–1.52], 1.22 [0.90–1.67], 1.50 [1.09–2.08], respectively; p for trend < 0.001). Conclusion: Elevated immune inflammation level on admission was an independent risk factor for all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality among CKD patients. In their fiscal year 2021 reports, the US House and Senate Appropriations Committees requested that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) evaluate current research related to women's health and topics that include stagnant cervical cancer survival. In response, the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health, with input from women's health experts; members of the public; representatives from NIH institutes, centers, and offices; and members of the NIH Advisory Committee on Research on Women's Health, reviewed the public health needs and current NIH activities on cervical cancer. The Advancing NIH Research on the Health of Women: A 2021 Conference held in October 2021 reviewed these findings and allowed the identification of opportunities to strengthen research. In this review, the authors summarize public health needs related to cervical cancer and NIH activities in this realm. Cervical cancer has become a rare disease in the United States, yet significant portions of the US population remain under screened or unscreened for cervical cancer, human papillomavirus vaccination rates remain low, access to high‐quality treatment remains a challenge for many, and large inequities by race and ethnicity persist. Novel, inclusive, and intentional research is needed to produce improvements in cervical cancer survival within the United States. Mortality from cervical cancer is a direct reflection of resource distribution. Purpose: We investigated the risk of mortality from cancers attributable to modifiable risk factors across representative transport, rescue, and security industries.Methods: We used nationwide Danish registries to identify all 307,605 workers from these industries from 2001 through 2015 and 2,278,363 other economically active individuals aged 18-64 years at the baseline for comparison. Adjusted hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for site-specific cancer deaths were calculated using Cox regression. Site-specific cancers were categorized by using population-attributable fraction (PAF) estimates derived from the previous literature.Results: During an average follow-up of 12.8 years, 5977 cancer deaths were registered in these industries. Cancer mortality with a high proportion of avoidable deaths (i.e., high PAF) was elevated in male seafarers (1.37; 1.16-1.62), in men of land transport (1.44; 1.35-1.52), in women of land transport (1.51; 1.29-1.77), and in women of defense forces (1.43; 1.13-1.81). In contrast, cancer mortality with a high PAF was reduced in men of police force (0.63; 0.51-0.78). The total cancer mortality was higher in seafarers (1.24; 1.12-1.37), workers in land transport (1.31; 1.27-1.36), and workers in defense forces (1.14; 1.07-1.22).Conclusions: We observed considerable cancer mortality disparities associated with modifiable risk factors across transport, rescue, and security industries. Simple Summary: This study addressed the under-investigated issue of second primary cancer occurring in colorectal cancer survivors. Our aim was to explore whether patients recovered from a first colorectal cancer were at higher risk of developing a subsequent primary cancer. The hypothesis was that exposure to cancer treatment, enhanced health surveillance and shared risk factors may lead to an excess risk of second primary cancer in this population. The number of cases of second primary cancer exceeded the expected in this population, mainly driven by female genital cancers, and especially observed in the first years after colorectal cancer diagnosis. Our findings are overall consistent with previous studies, providing valuable information to better characterize and predict mortality from second primary cancer in subjects who suffered from first colorectal cancer. Background: Cancer survivors are at risk of developing second primary cancers (SPC). We investigated the risk of SPC in colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors in Sicily, Southern Italy. Methods: We analyzed data from the Eastern Sicily cancer registry covering 2.5 million people diagnosed and followed up between 2003 and 2017. We calculated the standardized incidence ratio (SIR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of SPC overall and by cancer type, using the general Sicily population rates as reference. Results: A total of 19,040 cases of CRC and 1453 cases of SPC were included in the analysis. Mean age of occurrence of SPC was 68.1. The SIR for any SPC was 1.11 (95% CI 1.05–1.17); it was higher in women (1.18; 95% CI 1.08–1.29) than in men (1.07; 95% CI 0.97–1.14, p-value of difference 0.07). The SIR was increased for SPC from the ovary (SIR 2.01; 95% CI 1.33–2.95), kidney (SIR 2.00; 95% CI 1.54–2.56), endometrium (SIR 1.94; 95% CI 1.45–2.54), bladder (SIR 1.22, 95% CI 1.04–1.43) and stomach (1.29; 95% CI 0.98–1.66). The SIR for CRC as SPC was 0.84 (95% CI 0.70–1.01). No increased incidence was found for lung, prostate, breast, thyroid and liver cancer. The SIR for SPC overall and several cancers decreased with time of follow-up. Conclusions: In this population, CRC survivors have an 11% higher risk of developing a SPC than the general population, particularly cancers of the ovary, kidney, endometrium, bladder and stomach. The literature on the association between intentional weight loss and mortality rates has yielded controversial results, especially when it comes to older groups. The aim of the present narrative review was the critical evaluation of studies exploring the association between intentional weight loss and mortality in middle-aged and older adults (i.e., those aged 50 years or more). The majority of the longitudinal studies identified concluded that losing weight intentionally is not associated with mortality in middle-aged and older adults. However, when it comes to younger adults at the recruitment point, the studies have yielded more mixed results. In any case, more well-designed longitudinal studies and randomized clinical trials are needed in the area, with long follow-up periods and taking into account the underlying disease states. Objectives: To perform a systematic review and meta‐analysis of the literature to understand the variation in the reporting of neuroendocrine staining and determine the influence of reporting neuroendocrine staining at diagnosis on patient outcomes. Methods: Medical databases were searched to identify studies in which adenocarcinoma specimens were stained with any of the following four neuroendocrine markers: chromogranin A (CgA), neuron‐specific enolase (NSE), synaptophysin and CD56. The prevalence of neuroendocrine staining and correlation of the prevalence of neuroendocrine staining to patient outcomes were analysed using a random‐effects model. All statistical tests were two‐sided. Results: Sixty‐two studies spanning 7616 patients were analysed. The pooled prevalence for the most common marker, CgA (41%), was similar to that of NSE (39%) and higher than that of synaptophysin (31%). The prevalence of CgA staining was significantly influenced by reporting criteria, where objective thresholds reduced the variation in prevalence to 26%. No correlation was found between CgA prevalence and tumour grade. Patients positive for CgA staining using objective criteria had more rapid biochemical progression (hazard ratio [HR] 1.98, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.49 to 2.65) and poorer prostate cancer‐specific survival (HR 7.03, 95% CI 2.55 to 19.39) compared to negative patients, even among those with low‐risk cancers. Conclusion: Discrepancies in the reported prevalence of neuroendocrine cells in adenocarcinoma are driven by the inconsistent scoring criteria. This study unequivocally demonstrates that when neuroendocrine cell staining is assessed with objective criteria it identifies patients with poor clinical outcomes. Background: The relationship between vitamin D status and mortality in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) is unknown. This study investigated the associations of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations with all-cause and cause-specific mortality among American adults with OA.Methods: This study included 2556 adults with OA from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2001-2014). Death outcomes were ascertained by linkage to National Death Index (NDI) records through 31 December 2015. Cox proportional hazards model and two-piecewise Cox proportional hazards model were used to elucidate the nonlinear relationship between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and mortality in OA patients, and stratified analyses were performed to identify patients with higher mortality risk.Results: During 16,606 person-years of follow-up, 438 all-cause deaths occurred, including 74 cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related and 78 cancer deaths. After multivariable adjustment, lower serum 25(OH)D levels were significantly and nonlinearly associated with higher risks of all-cause and CVD mortality among participants with OA. Furthermore, we discovered L-shaped associations between serum 25(OH)D levels and all-cause and CVD mortality, with mortality plateauing at 54.40 nmol/L for all-cause mortality and 27.70 nmol/L for CVD mortality. Compared to participants with 25(OH)D levels below the inflection points, those with higher levels had a 2% lower risk for all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR] 0.98, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.96-0.99) and 17% lower risk for CVD mortality (HR 0.83, 95% CI 0.72-0.95).Conclusions: Nonlinear associations of serum 25(OH)D levels with all-cause and CVD mortality were observed in American patients with OA. The thresholds of 27.70 and 54.40 nmol/L for CVD and all-cause mortality, respectively, may represent intervention targets for lowering the risk of premature death and cardiovascular disease, but this needs to be confirmed in large clinical trials. Background Patients with kidney failure have a higher cancer risk compared with the age-matched general population. However, the outcomes of incident dialysis patients with a prior cancer history are unknown. Methods Using Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry data (2000–2019), the outcomes and survival probabilities of incident dialysis patients with prior cancers and having experienced a cancer recurrence or having developed a new cancer after dialysis commencement were described. Results Of 4912 patients with prior cancers before dialysis commencement, 323 (7%) and 343 (7%) patients experienced cancer recurrence or developed new cancers after dialysis initiation, respectively. The median time from dialysis commencement to cancer recurrence was 1.2 years [interquartile range (IQR) 0.5–2.8] and was 2.0 years (IQR 0.7–4.0) for new cancer occurrence. Of those with cancer recurrence, 80% presented with metastatic disease and one in two patients died from cancer, with a median time from cancer recurrence to death of 0.5 years (IQR 0.2–1.7). Of those who developed new cancer, urinary tract and respiratory cancers were the most frequent cancer types, with a median time from new cancer diagnosis to death of 1.3 years (IQR 0.4–3.1). The 3-year survival probabilities on dialysis following cancer recurrence and new cancer were 19% [95% confidence interval (CI) 15–24] and 41% (35–47), respectively. Conclusion Among incident dialysis patients with a prior cancer history, 14% experienced cancer recurrence or developed a new cancer. Patients who experienced cancer recurrence or developed new cancer have poor outcomes, with ˂50% surviving beyond 3 years. These findings suggest the need to have a greater understanding of the characteristics, cancer screening, treatment responses and reasons for commencing dialysis in patients with kidney failure and prior cancer history, which may help in the shared clinical decision-making process when considering dialysis for these patients. Simple Summary: It has been questioned whether vitamin D supplements can reduce the mortality and incidence of tumors. In this systematic review and meta-analysis of 12 randomized controlled trials with a total of 72,669 participants, vitamin D supplementation could not reduce the cancer mortality or cancer incidence. Our results suggest a reconsideration of the previous view that vitamin D supplementation could reduce overall cancer mortality is needed. Background: Vitamin D deficiency is related to increased cancer risk and deaths. However, whether vitamin D supplementation reduces cancer mortality remains unclear, and several randomized controlled trials yield inconsistent results. Methods: Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched from their inception until 28 June 2022, for randomized controlled trials investigating vitamin D supplementation. Pooled relative risks (RRs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated. Trials with vitamin D supplementation combined with calcium supplementation versus placebo alone and recruiting participants with cancer at baseline were excluded in the present study. Results: This study included 12 trials with a total of 72,669 participants. Vitamin D supplementation did not reduce overall cancer mortality (RR 0.96, 95% CI 0.80–1.16). However, vitamin D supplementation was associated with a reduction in lung cancer mortality (RR 0.63, 95% CI 0.45–0.90). Conclusions: Vitamin D supplementation could not reduce cancer mortality in this highly purified meta-analysis. Background: This study aimed to examine associations between haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels over time and all-cause and cause-specific mortality in middle-aged and older Koreans. Methods: Using 16 years of follow-up data from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study, we analysed 9294 individuals aged 40–69 years with no history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) or cancer. Participants were divided into a known diabetes group and five groups categorized by HbA1c levels (< 5.0%, 5.0–5.4%, 5.5–5.9%, 6.0–6.4%, and ≥ 6.5%). Hazard ratios (HRs) for all-cause and cause-specific mortality associated with HbA1c levels were calculated using a conventional and a time-dependent Cox proportional hazards model. Restricted cubic spline models were fitted to investigate the relationship between continuous HbA1c levels and mortality among people without known diabetes. Subgroup analyses were performed for age, sex, smoking, hypertension, liver diseases, and red blood cell counts. Results: During a median follow-up period of 15.7 years, there were 944 deaths, including 185 deaths from CVD, 359 from cancer, and 125 from all external causes. Compared with participants with HbA1c levels of 5.5–5.9%, multivariate-adjusted HRs and 95% confidence intervals for all-cause death of participants with levels < 5.0%, 5.0–5.4%, 6.0–6.4%, and ≥ 6.5% and participants with known diabetes were 1.84 (1.35–2.51), 1.13 (0.95–1.34), 1.30 (1.04–1.62), 1.37 (0.97–1.93), and 2.03 (1.70–2.44), respectively. The risk of cancer mortality was significantly increased in HbA1c < 5.0% (HR, 2.21; 95% CI 1.42–3.44) and known diabetes (HR, 1.60; 95% CI 1.18–2.15). When we performed diverse subgroup analyses, low HbA1c levels at baseline were strongly associated with mortality in participants with liver diseases. Conclusions: We found U-shaped associations between HbA1c levels at baseline and over time and all-cause mortality in middle-aged and older Koreans. Additionally, the risk of cancer mortality increased both in low and high HbA1c groups, but CVD mortality increased only in high HbA1c group. In particular, people with liver diseases and low HbA1c levels had a high risk of all-cause mortality. Using patient-specific data, the present study aimed to identify organ and effective dose to estimate the lifetime attributable risks (LARs) of cancer incidence and mortality associated with routine CT procedures. A cross-sectional investigation was conducted on 515 patients who underwent CT scan. The effective dose was computed using two methods: first, the ImPACT software and relevant conversion factors. Second, the effective dose was determined using the scanner-derived DLP and AAPM TG 23's conversion factor. Using the biological effects of ionizing radiation (BEIR VII) report, LAR of cancer incidence and mortality were computed. The greatest mean organ doses for abdomen-pelvis, routine chest, chest HRCT, brain, and sinus examinations were 20.64 ± 3.27 mGy (kidneys), 21.55 ± 5.47 mGy (thymus and esophagus), 10.51 ± 1.31 mGy (thymus and esophagus), 22.72 ± 3.01 mGy (lens), and 18.56 ± 1.25 mGy (lens) respectively. Using ImPACT dosimetry software, the mean effective dose for routine chest, abdomen-pelvis, HRCT chest, brain, and sinus examinations was 8.46 mSv, 10.13 mSv, 4.19 mSv, 1 mSv, and 0.68 mSv, respectively. Using the DLP to effective dose conversion factor, the mean effective dose was lower. The mean cancer incidence risks per 100,000 people were 63.33, 54.98, 27.82, 6.31, and 5.22 for abdomen-pelvis, routine chest, HRCT, brain, and sinus examinations, respectively. The mean LAR of cancer mortality for all cancer was 38.22, 33.17, 16.72, 3.87, 2.93 for abdomen-pelvis, routine chest, HRCT, brain, and sinus examinations, respectively, per 100,000 people. Purpose: Insulin levels play an important role in cancer development. However, the link between an insulinogenic diet and cancer is still unclear. Therefore, we performed a systematic review with meta-analysis to investigate the association between dietary insulin index (II) and load (IL) with cancer risk and mortality. Methods: A comprehensive search between electronic databases (Web of Science, PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Google Scholar) was conducted to identify relevant studies up to January 2022. The relative risks (RR) and Odds ratios (OR) were extracted from eligible studies, and meta-analysis was performed to calculate the pooled effect size. Result: 12 papers including 14 studies (10 cohorts and 4 case–control) were included for the meta-analysis. Among them, 10 studies reported effect size for the risk of cancer, and 4 studies reported effect size for cancer mortality. We observed no significant association between II and IL with cancer overall (RRII: 1.03, 95%CI: 0.91–1.17, RRIL: 1.16, 95%CI: 0.94–1.42) and in cohort studies, however, in case–control studies was related with higher odds of cancer (ORII: 2.30, 95%CI: 1.21–4.38, ORIL: 2.57, 95%CI: 1.64–4.02). Higher II and IL scores were associated with the increased risk of total (RRII: 1.29, 95%CI: 1.02–1.63) and (RRIL: 1.39, 95%CI: 1.06–1.83) and colorectal cancer mortality (RRII: 1.29, 95%CI: 1.13–1.48) and (RRIL: 1.37, 95%CI: 1.18–1.60). Conclusion: Higher dietary II and IL were not associated with cancer risk in overall and cohort studies, whereas related with a higher risk of cancer in case–control studies. The literature remains sparse and inconclusive about the impact of shift and night work on mortality, and still more on specific causes of death. The objectives were to explore the prospective associations between exposure to shift and night work and all-cause and cause-specific mortality. The study was based on a large national representative French prospective cohort of 1,511,456 employees followed up from 1976 to 2002. Exposure to shift and night work relied on a job-exposure matrix, and 3 time-varying measures (current, cumulative, and recency-weighted cumulative exposure) were constructed. Mortality and causes of death were provided by the national registry, and all-cause, cardiovascular, cancer and preventable mortality, and suicide were studied. Cox proportional hazards models were performed to study the associations between shift and night work and mortality. During follow-up, 22,105 deaths occurred for all-cause mortality. In the study of mortality until the end of last job during follow-up, shift and/or night work were associated with all-cause, cardiovascular, cancer and preventable mortality, and suicide (except night without shift work with cancer mortality and suicide) among men. Shift work (especially shift without night work) was associated with all-cause, cancer and preventable mortality among women. The results were similar for current, cumulative, and recency-weighted cumulative exposure. Associations were found for more detailed causes of death: cerebrovascular diseases for both genders, ischemic heart diseases, respiratory cancers, smoking-related mortality, and external causes of death among men, and breast cancer among women. In the study of mortality until the end of follow-up, some additional associations were found among women between night work and all-cause and preventable mortality, and suicide, suggesting long-term or delayed exposure effects. The study may, however, be underpowered to detect all the exposure-outcome associations, especially among women. Background: At present, "Belt and Road" ("B&R") member states (accounting for about 61.78% of the world's population) face different types of cancer threats to varying degrees. We analyzed the incidence and mortality and risk factors of cancer in the member countries of the "B&R" to explore the basis of health and medical cooperation between countries and provide a foundation for formulating cancer prevention and control policies for building a healthy "B&R."Methods: Data were derived from the Global Cancer Observatory and Cancer Country Profiles in 2020. Incidence and mortality were age-standardized rates (ASRs). Population attributable fractions (PAFs) was applied to measure risk factors of cancers in the "B&R" countries. The mortality-to-incidence ratio (MIR) was calculated by dividing the mortality rate by the incidence rate.Results: A total of 26 cancers were included in the study. Lung, breast, colorectal, stomach, liver, prostate, cervical, esophageal, thyroid, and uterine cancers were the most common and highest in age-standardized mortality in the "B&R" countries. For men, Hungary had the highest cancer age-standardized incidence and mortality (ASR, 289.3 per 100,000 and ASR, 235.7 per 100,000, respectively), followed by Latvia (ASR, 288.6 per 100,000 and ASR, 196.5 per 100,000, respectively). In females, the highest incidence rates were estimated in Greece (ASR, 238.7 per 100,000), and the highest mortality rate was Brunei (ASR, 192.3 per 100,000). All countries were in the middle or high HDI range, with about half (46.88%) of countries achieving high HDI, mostly in Central and Eastern Europe (13 countries) and West Asia (10 countries). The United Arab Emirates had the highest MIR in male and female (1.59 vs 2.19). Tobacco products, infectious factors, and ultraviolet rays were the three main cancer risk factors in the "B&R" countries.Conclusion: The overall burden of cancer in the countries along the "B&R" remains substantial, while the corresponding cancer prevention and control policies need to be improved. Background: There is extensive interest in understanding how neighborhood socioeconomic status (nSES) may affect cancer incidence or survival. However, variability regarding items included and approaches used to form a composite nSES index presents challenges in summarizing overall associations with cancer. Given recent calls for standardized measures of neighborhood sociodemographic effects in cancer disparity research, the objective of this systematic review was to identify and compare existing nSES indices studied across the cancer continuum (incidence, screening, diagnosis, treatment, survival/mortality) and summarize associations by race/ethnicity and cancer site to inform future cancer disparity studies. Methods: Using PRISMA guidelines, peer‐reviewed articles published between 2010 and 2019 containing keywords related to nSES and cancer were identified in PubMed. Results: Twenty‐four nSES indices were identified from 75 studies. In general, findings indicated a significant association between nSES and cancer outcomes (n = 64/75 studies; 85.33%), with 42/64 (65.63%) adjusting for highly‐correlated individual SES factors (e.g., education). However, the direction of association differed by cancer site, race/ethnicity, and nSES index. Conclusions: This review highlights several methodologic and conceptual issues surrounding nSES measurement and potential associations with cancer disparities. Recommendations pertaining to the selection of nSES measures are provided, which may help inform disparity‐related disease processes and improve the identification of vulnerable populations in need of intervention. We examined whether secondhand smoke exposure during childhood was associated with cancer mortality in adulthood among never smokers. In the Japan Collaborative Cohort Study for Evaluation of Cancer Risk, we analyzed data from 45,722 Japanese lifetime nonsmokers aged 40–79 years with no history of cancer at baseline (1988–1990) who had completed a lifestyle questionnaire, including information on the number of family members who had smoked at home during their childhood (0, 1, 2, or ≥3 family members). A Cox proportional hazards model and competing-risks regression were used to calculate multivariable hazard ratios and subdistribution hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals for overall and site-specific cancer mortality according to the number of family members who smoked during the participant's childhood, after adjusting for potentially confounding factors. During a median follow-up period of 19.2 years, a total of 2,356 cancer deaths were documented. Secondhand smoke exposure was positively associated with the risk of mortality from pancreatic cancer in adulthood; the multivariable hazard ratio for having 3 or more family members who smoked (as compared with none) was 2.32 (95% confidence interval: 1.14, 4.72). Associations were not evident for total cancer risk or risk of other types of smoking-related cancer. Purpose: We aimed to investigate the relationship between overall nutritional status and cancer mortality. Methods: A total of 12 262 US adults from six consecutive surveys of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES 2003–2014) were analyzed. The overall health nutritional biomarkers index (HNBI) score, capturing characteristics of 17 biomarkers was developed to assess the overall nutritional status. The lower the HNBI score, the healthier nutritional status would be. Hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated by Cox proportional hazards regression models to evaluate the association between the HNBI score and cancer mortality. Results: The lower overall HNBI score was associated with decreased risk of cancer mortality, compared with participants in the 4th quartile of overall HNBI score, the HR (95% CIs) for participants in the 1st quartiles was 0.54 (0.33–0.89) (P-trend = 0.019). Healthier lifestyle habits and not obesity interacted with HNBI score, compared with participants with higher HNBI score and smoking currently/not exercising regularly/obesity, participants with lower HNBI score and not smoking currently/exercising regularly/not obesity were associated with lower risk of cancer mortality, the HR (95% CIs) were 0.43 (0.26–0.73), 0.57 (0.33–0.97), and 0.62 (0.47–0.97), respectively. These significant associations remained among participants who were followed-up more than 2 years. Conclusion: Our findings suggested that healthier overall nutritional status was associated with lower risk of cancer mortality among US adults. Not smoking, exercise regularly and not obesity interacted with overall nutritional status. Background and aims: Various smoking behaviors, including smoking initiation, age of initiation, heaviness of smoking and smoking cessation, have been individually related to the risk of mortality; however, no study has assessed these smoking behaviors jointly in relation to mortality. Our study aimed to measure prospectively the association of panoramic smoking burden (PSB), generated from the four aforementioned smoking behaviors, with all‐cause and cause‐specific mortality, and measure whether such associations are modified by genetic variations. Design Prospective cohort study. Setting: UK Biobank. Participants: A total of 360 937 participants aged between 37 and 73 years were enrolled in 2006–10 and ‐followed‐up to 2018. Measurements The exposure was PSB, constructed based on four smoking behaviors including smoking initiation, age of initiation, heaviness of smoking and smoking cessation in a weighted method. A genetically determined PSB was also constructed with smoking‐associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and categorized into tertiles. The primary outcomes were all‐cause and cause‐specific mortality. Findings We identified 15 968 deaths [9022 from cancer and 5092 from cardiovascular disease (CVD)] over a median of 11.36 years' follow‐up. For all‐cause mortality, compared with participants with the PSB of zero, the hazard ratios of participants who had a PSB of one, two, three and four were 1.23 [95% confidence intervals (CI) = 1.18–1.29), 1.66 (95% CI = 1.59–1.75), 3.33 (95% CI = 3.17–3.51) and 5.76 (95% CI = 4.66–7.13), respectively. Among participants within each genetic risk category, low and intermediate PSB were associated with 45–58% reduced risk of all‐cause death compared with high PSB. Analysis of population‐attributable risk percentage indicated that 21.9, 19.1 and 24.7% of all‐cause‐, cancer‐ and CVD‐specific death could have been avoided if all ever smokers initiated smoking after age 18 years, smoked < 20 cigarettes/day and quit smoking. Conclusions: The panoramic smoking burden, based on smoking initiation, age of initiation, heaviness of smoking and smoking cessation, appears to be associated with all‐cause and cause‐specific mortality in a gradient manner with increasing panoramic smoking burden independent of other traditional and genetic risk factors. Background: It is currently unknown if within high-quality dietary intake there exist distinct dietary patterns associated with health benefits that are identifiable with multidimensional dietary pattern analyses. The purpose of this study was to identify specific dietary patterns and groups therein and their associations with all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortality.Methods: We conducted sex-specific k-means cluster analyses within Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015) quintile 5 in 3 US cohorts [NIH-American Association of Retired Persons Diet and Health Study (AARP), the Multiethnic Cohort (MEC), Women's Health Initiative Observational Study (WHI OS)], clusters ranging from n = 1190 to n = 12,007. Characterizations incorporated HEI-2015 overall and component-specific percentage adherence goals, using untruncated and truncated radar graphs and shape analyses. Using cohort- and sex-specific Cox proportional hazards models, associations of quintile 5 clusters with all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer mortality were evaluated relative to quintile 1.Results: In each cohort sex-specific sample, 3 identified clusters included 16%-62% of participants, providing evidence for variation within high-quality dietary intake. Clusters revealed commonalities in total fruits and whole fruits intakes that exceeded goals and high sodium intake. Dairy and whole grain intakes oftentimes fell below goal. Some clusters were in addition characterized by total vegetables, greens & beans, and seafood & plant protein intakes exceeding goals. All high-quality dietary patterns were associated with a multivariable-adjusted significant 15%-26% lower risk of all-cause death than diet intake in quintile 1 (except for cluster 2 in WHI OS), and with a 16%-25% lower risk of CVD mortality in the AARP and MEC cohorts. Cancer mortality results were inconsistent.Conclusions: Multiple ways to achieve a high-quality diet were identified and significant associations with lower all-cause and CVD mortality were seen in some cohorts. Background: Exercise may increase the inhalation and deposition of air pollutants, which may counteract its beneficial effects. We thus examined the combined effects of chronic exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and habitual exercise on the risk of death from cancer in Taiwan.Patients and Methods: A total of 384 128 adults (≥18 years of age) were recruited for a medical screening programme between 2001 and 2016, yielding 842 384 medical-examination records. All participants were followed up until 31 May 2019. Vital data were obtained from the National Death Registry of Taiwan and the ambient PM2.5 exposure was estimated using a satellite-based spatiotemporal model. Information on habitual exercise was collected using a standard self-administered questionnaire. The time-dependent Cox-regression model was used to evaluate the combined effects.Results: A greater amount of habitual exercise was associated with lower risk of death from cancer, whilst a higher level of PM2.5 exposure was associated with a higher risk of death from cancer. The inverse associations of habitual exercise with death from cancer were not modified by chronic exposure to PM2.5. The participants in the group with a high level of exercise and a low level of PM2.5 exposure exhibited a 35% lower risk of death from cancer than those in the group with a low level of exercise and a high level of PM2.5 exposure (95% confidence interval: 28%, 42%).Conclusions: Increased levels of exercise and reduced exposure levels of PM2.5 are associated with a lower risk of death from cancer. Habitual exercise reduces the risk of death from cancer regardless of the levels of chronic PM2.5 exposure. Our results indicate that habitual exercise is a suitable health-promotion strategy even for people who reside in moderately polluted regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To test the association of alcohol consumption with total and cause‐specific mortality risk. Design Prospective observational multi‐centre population‐based study. Setting: Sixteen cohorts (15 from Europe) in the MOnica Risk, Genetics, Archiving and Monograph (MORGAM) Project. Participants: A total of 142 960 individuals (mean age 50 ± 13 years, 53.9% men). Measurements Average alcohol intake by food frequency questionnaire, total and cause‐specific mortality. Findings In comparison with life‐time abstainers, consumption of alcohol less than 10 g/day was associated with an average 11% [95% confidence interval (CI) = 7–14%] reduction in the risk of total mortality, while intake > 20 g/day was associated with a 13% (95% CI = 7–20%) increase in the risk of total mortality. Comparable findings were observed for cardiovascular (CV) deaths. With regard to cancer, drinking up to 10 g/day was not associated with either mortality risk reduction or increase, while alcohol intake > 20 g/day was associated with a 22% (95% CI = 10–35%) increased risk of mortality. The association of alcohol with fatal outcomes was similar in men and women, differed somewhat between countries and was more apparent in individuals preferring wine, suggesting that benefits may not be due to ethanol but other ingredients. Mediation analysis showed that high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol explained 2.9 and 18.7% of the association between low alcohol intake and total as well as CV mortality, respectively. Conclusions: In comparison with life‐time abstainers, consuming less than one drink per day (nadir at 5 g/day) was associated with a reduced risk of total, cardiovascular and other causes mortality, except cancer. Background: Social determinants of health (SDOHs) cluster together and can have deleterious impacts on health outcomes. Individually, SDOHs increase the risk of cancer mortality, but their cumulative burden is not well understood. The authors sought to determine the combined effect of SDOH on cancer mortality. Methods: Using the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) cohort, the authors studied 29,766 participants aged 45+ years and followed them 10+ years. Eight potential SDOHs were considered, and retained SDOHs that were associated with cancer mortality (P <.10) were retained to create a count (0, 1, 2, 3+). Cox proportional hazard models estimated associations between the SDOH count and cancer mortality through December 31, 2017, adjusting for confounders. Models were age‐stratified (45‐64 vs 65+ years). Results: Participants were followed for a median of 10.6 years (interquartile range [IQR], 6.5, 12.7 years). Low education, low income, zip code poverty, poor public health infrastructure, lack of health insurance, and social isolation were significantly associated with cancer mortality. In adjusted models, among those <65 years, compared to no SDOHs, having 1 SDOH (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.39; 95% CI, 1.11‐1.75), 2 SDOHs (aHR, 1.61; 95% CI, 1.26‐2.07), and 3+ SDOHs (aHR, 2.09; 95% CI, 1.58‐2.75) were associated with cancer mortality (P for trend <.0001). Among individuals 65+ years, compared to no SDOH, having 1 SDOH (aHR, 1.16; 95% CI, 1.00‐1.35) and 3+ SDOHs (aHR, 1.26; 95% CI, 1.04‐1.52) was associated with cancer mortality (P for trend =.032). Conclusions: A greater number of SDOHs were significantly associated with an increased risk of cancer mortality, which persisted after adjustment for confounders. Individually, social determinants of health increase the risk of cancer mortality, but their cumulative burden is not well understood. A greater number of social determinants of health in the same individual are found to be significantly associated with an increased risk of cancer mortality, even after adjustment for a variety of confounders.
