The hydromechanical behavior of argillaceous rocks, which are possible host rocks for underground radioactive nuclear waste storage, is investigated by means of micromechanical experimental investigations and modellings. Strain fields at the micrometric scale of the composite structure of this rock, are measured by the combination of environmental scanning electron microscopy, in situ testing and digital image correlation technique. The evolution of argillaceous rocks under pure hydric loading is first investigated. The strain field is strongly heterogeneous and manifests anisotropy. The observed nonlinear deformation at high relative humidity (RH) is related not only to damage, but also to the nonlinear swelling of the clay mineral itself, controlled by different local mechanisms depending on RH. Irreversible deformations are observed during hydric cycles, as well as a network of microcracks located in the bulk of the clay matrix and/or at the inclusion-matrix interface. Second, the local deformation field of the material under combined hydric and mechanical loadings is quantified. Three types of deformation bands are evidenced under mechanical loading, either normal to stress direction (compaction), parallel (microcracking) or inclined (shear). Moreover, they are strongly controlled by the water content of the material: shear bands are in particular prone to appear at high RH states. In view of understanding the mechanical interactions a local scale, the material is modeled as a composite made of non-swelling elastic inclusions embedded in an elastic swelling clay matrix. The internal stress field induced by swelling strain incompatibilities between inclusions and matrix, as well as the overall deformation, is numerically computed at equilibrium but also during the transient stage associated with a moisture gradient. An analytical micromechanical model based on Eshelby's solution is proposed. In addition, 2D finite element computations are performed. Finalement, le matériau sous chargement hydrique est modélisé comme un composite constitué par de inclusions non gonflantes au sein d'une matrice gonflante. On calcule d'abord le champ de contrainte interne dû aux interactions inclusion-matrice ainsi qu'au gradient d'humidité, et ensuite la déformation globale. On en dérive un modèle micromécanique du type du problème d'Eshelby. De plus, des modélisations 2D aux éléments finis sont effectuées.

International audience; This paper deals with a new macroscopic numerical modelling of the mechanical long-term behaviour of ANDRA's underground research laboratory. The study focuses on the GMR gallery, oriented along the minor horizontal principal stress and located at the main level 490m deep. The simulations are made using the finite element method (FEM). Convergence measurements in this gallery exhibit an important dissymmetry between the vertical and horizontal directions, as well as a significant time effect in the vertical trend. In attempts to both understand the phenomena that lie beneath such dissymmetry and reproduce the experimental data, a modification to Lemaître's creep law has been proposed. The new viscoplastic law takes into account the following aspects: rock transverse isotropy, creep behaviour and rock expansion. The excavation history of the GMR gallery has also been considered in the numerical modelling. The numerical results are very satisfactory for the GMR drift. However, the mechanisms of anisotropic shear and expansion on which the new law is based do not lead to an accurate reproduction of the data measured in the galleries oriented in the perpendicular direction. Therefore, a thorough insight into the mechanical behaviour of the rock mass and into the proposed new law is needed before the latter can be applied to the Callovo-Oxofordian layer.

Soft-sediment deformation involves complex interactions between discrete fracturing and diffuse bulk strain, described in terms of volume change and shear strain in a critical state mechanics framework. This study reports on a mesoscale normal fault zone, intraformational in Oligocene argillaceous sediments from the Boom Formation (Belgium), containing several metre-scale normal fault strands. They form either discrete fault planes or decimetre-wide shear zones with internal fabric. The faults have been subjected to microtectonic and petrophysical analysis. Small but significant changes occur in the porous network of the argillaceous matrix approaching a fault or shear zone, indicating compactional strain in both footwall and hanging wall. Internal compaction associated with faulting is put forward as a ductile–brittle feedback mechanism in the kinematics of intraformational fracture systems. Small differential stress induced by compaction and minor regional tectonic forces (differential uplift and tilt) and subsequent gravitational forces (downslope shear stress) induce small shear bands in nearly critically stressed weak mud. Shear banding is accompanied by layer-parallel shortening and bulk volume loss. This provides an additional extension of endogenous origin, accommodated by further deformation. This ductile–brittle feedback mechanism eventually leads to commonly observed intraformational collapse structures called polygonal fault systems.

The aim is to contribute to a better understanding of the mechanical behaviour of argillaceous rocks under the influence of aqueous solutions, as they are considered to be a possible host rock for a nuclear waste disposal site. Shale, can depending on the composition, change its mechanical and petrophysical properties in a wide range due to fluid-clay mineral interactions. One and the same shale can be soft or hard, ductile or rigid, permeable or sealing - depending on the environmental conditions the sample is exposed to. Shale can be very sensitive to a change of conditions such as humidity, stress state, temperature, and chemical potential gradients. One of the most obvious shale reactions is the swelling and shrinking as a function of it's saturation and the chemical potential gradient in the fluid system. Theses volume changes also sometimes alter other properties. Depending on the nature and the concentration of a liquid, a shale can either shrink or swell when in contact with a liquid. The material may sometimes also disperse in the liquid and deteriorate completely. An understandable description of the clay-minerals from the site of Est is given. The physicochemical micro mechanism of the fluid solid interaction such as adsorption, absorption, capillarity and osmosis are also presented. The possible consequences of these mechanisms on the macro mechanical behaviour, such as swelling and shrinking, crack induction and others was analysed. X-ray microfocus technology was introduced and used to analyse shale under different environmental conditions. The advantage of this technology is it's non-destructive character. The preparation of classical thin cross section is a rather inappropriate method, concerning micro cracks and deterioration in shale, because of the grinding of the material. A solution test was conducted to qualitatively observe the real-time reaction of the shale, from the site of Est, when in contact with different aqueous solutions and under uniaxial load. The cracking as well as the strain and the general behaviour of the material was investigated by using the X-ray μRG technology while the material was immersed in a solution. It could be shown, that the deterioration, the development of micro cracks and the strain are partially governed by the ion concentration and the ion species of the solution. In the kinetic test arrangement the shale was exposed to different relative humidity and uniaxial load conditions. A computer controlled air conditioning system, with online data transfer of the axial strain and the environmental parameters, was used. The relation between environmental humidity, axial strain, axial load condition and micro cracks was analyzed. X-ray microfocus technology was used to take images of the specimen before and after the test. The material was tested in a range of relative humidity from 5% to 99%, in order to evaluate the influence of the humidity on the crack and strain behaviour. A cyclical test was conducted to asses the crack sensitivity in a range from 35% RH to 75% RH. Finally a combined test was realized, to determine whether the material reacts to pure water in a different way after being saturated in a humid environment, compared to its reaction to water in its initial saturation state. The material was initially exposed to 5% and 99% relative humidity and subsequently immersed into pure water. A hydration phenomenon was discovered through this test, which is believed to be of importance with reference to commonly applied testing procedures.; Cette thèse a été réalisée en coopération avec ANDRA, l'agence nationale française des déchets radioactives.
