Here we present the cascade converter (CC), which provides real-time imaging of ionizing radiation (IoR) distribution. It was designed and manufactured with the simplest architecture, utilizing liquid crystal display (LCD) technology. Based on two merged substrates with transparent electrodes, armed with functional layers, with the cell filled with nematic liquid crystal, a display-like, IoR-stimulated CC was achieved. The CC comprises low-absorbing polymer substrates (made of polyethylene terephthalate—PET) armed with a transparent ITO electrode covered with a thin semipermeable membrane of polymer (biphenylperfluorocyclobutyl: BP-PFCB) doped with functional nanoparticles (NPs) of Lu2O3:Eu. This stack was covered with a photoconductive layer of α-Se and finally with a thin polyimide (PI) layer for liquid crystal alignment. The opposite substrate was made of LCD-type glass with ITO and polyimide aligning layers. Both substrates form a cell with a twisted structure of nematic liquid crystal (TN) driven with an effective electric field E e f f . An effective electric field driving TN structure is generated with a sum of (1) a bias voltage V B I A S applied to ITO transparent electrodes and (2) the photogenerated additional voltage V X r a y induced between ITO and α-Se layers with a NPs-doped BP-PFCB polymer layer in-between. The IoR (here, X-ray) conversion into real imaging of the IoR distribution was achieved in the following stages: (1) conversion of IoR distribution into non-ionizing red light emitted with functional NPs, (2) transformation of red light into an electric charge distributed in a layer of the photoconductive α-Se, which is what results in the generation of distributed voltage V X r a y , and (3) a voltage-mediated, distributed switching of the TN structure observed with the naked eye. The presented imaging device is characterized by a simple structure and a simple manufacturing process, with the potential for use as a portable element of IoR detection and as a dosimeter. The SC‐YAG:Tb@YAG:Pr‐SCF composite epitaxial structure consisting of a 1 mm thick single crystal substrate of YAG:Tb garnet and a thin (9 µm) single crystalline film of YAG:Pr garnet is fabricated, and its luminescent properties are examined toward luminescence thermometry. The possibility to efficiently excite, individually or simultaneously, the Tb3+ and Pr3+ dopants by their intense allowed 4f→5d transitions is executed to reach relative thermal sensitivity higher than 1% K−1 over the range of temperatures as wide as 100–625 K and above 0.5% K−1 over 13–650 K. The obtained results demonstrate that using intra‐ and inter‐configurational emission transitions of Pr3+ and other lanthanides makes it possible to design wide‐range luminescence thermometers with high sensitivity spanning the entire operating limits. Aluminum garnets display exceptional adaptability in incorporating mismatching elements, thereby facilitating the synthesis of novel materials with tailored properties. This study explored Ce3+-doped Tb3Al5−xScxO12 crystals (where x ranges from 0.5 to 3.0), revealing a novel approach to control luminescence and photoconversion through atomic size mismatch engineering. Raman spectroscopy confirmed the coexistence of garnet and perovskite phases, with Sc substitution significantly influencing the garnet lattice and induced A1g mode softening up to Sc concentration x = 2.0. The Sc atoms controlled sub-eutectic inclusion formation, creating efficient light scattering centers and unveiling a compositional threshold for octahedral site saturation. This modulation enabled the control of energy transfer dynamics between Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions, enhancing luminescence and mitigating quenching. The Sc admixing process regulated luminous efficacy (LE), color rendering index (CRI), and correlated color temperature (CCT), with adjustments in CRI from 68 to 84 and CCT from 3545 K to 12,958 K. The Ce3+-doped Tb3Al5−xScxO12 crystal (where x = 2.0) achieved the highest LE of 114.6 lm/W and emitted light at a CCT of 4942 K, similar to daylight white. This approach enables the design and development of functional materials with tailored optical properties applicable to lighting technology, persistent phosphors, scintillators, and storage phosphors. This research investigated the crystal chemical principles related to the incorporation of incompatible atoms into a garnet host lattice. These considerations might be used to guide and drive the design of new garnet compounds with novel properties. The strongly incompatible La atoms at the Lu sites of the Lu3Al2Ga3O12:Ce host lattice served as a research model. This study showed the possibility of designing material properties by exploiting atom mismatches in a crystal lattice. Lu3Al2Ga3O12:Ce0.075% crystals with increasing concentrations of La3+ ions were grown from the melt using the micro-pulling down method. The concentration of La3+ ions above 0.300 at% imposed physical and chemical boundary conditions on the crystallization process. The radial distributions of the chemical elements were studied as a function of the concentration of La3+ ions. It was revealed that La3+ codoping significantly reduced the cross-sectional fluctuation of the Ga and Al atoms. Persistent green-yellow luminescence due to the inter-configurational 5d → 4f transition of Ce3+ was observed after the blue-light excitation. The LuAGG:Ce0.075%,La0.015% phosphor showed long persistent luminescence for more than 14 h above 0.32 mcd m−2, the detection limit of a human eye. The thermoluminescence glow curves revealed that the addition of La3+ ions increased the concentration of traps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concept of optical temperature sensing using band intensity ratio is considered as one of the most effective, self‐reference, non‐invasive, and rapid detection techniques for the local temperature in natural or engineered systems. In this work, for the first time a divalent lanthanide‐co‐doped dual‐center system, i.e., SrB4O7:Eu2+/Sm2+ phosphors, working as a bifunctional ratiometric sensor of temperature and pressure is employed. With temperature alterations, the Eu2+/Sm2+ luminescence intensity ratio and the emission lifetime of Sm2+ are significantly changed, showing unprecedentedly high relative sensitivity of 45.6 and 3.17% K‐1, respectively. Moreover, in the pressure range from ≈10 to 40 GPa, the intensity ratio of the Eu2+/Sm2+ emissions shows strong pressure dependence and can be utilized for pressure monitoring, with high pressure relative sensitivity of ≈13.8% GPa‐1. The superior performance indicates that the developed dual‐center Eu2+/Sm2+‐co‐doped SrB4O7 phosphors are promising candidates for supersensitive optical sensing applications.
