Abstract

Design cards are a popular way for designers to encode and communicate design knowledge. Aiming to inform the designers of such design tools we set out to characterize the design space of design cards in a two-pronged approach involving a) a systematic literature survey on the use of design cards and b) card sorting interviews, which were carried out in order to characterize the first impressions of design cards from design students, for different formal qualities and content of design cards. Our results point towards a need to develop more abstract and evocative presentations, that are visually attractive while supporting a flexible application of cards. Future research could explore whether such preferences are consistent with how card sets are used during design processes in practice. © 2020 ACM.

Abstract

Artificially intelligent agents increasingly collaborate with humans in human-agent teams. Timely proactive sharing of relevant information within the team contributes to the overall team performance. This paper presents a machine learning approach to proactive communication in AI-agents using contextual factors. Proactive communication was learned in two consecutive experimental steps: (a) multi-agent team simulations to learn effective communicative behaviors, and (b) human-agent team experiments to refine communication suitable for a human team member. Results consist of proactive communication policies for communicating both beliefs and goals within human-agent teams. Agents learned to use minimal communication to improve team performance in simulation, while they learned more specific socially desirable behaviors in the human-agent team experiment. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

Abstract

Background: People living with HIV (PLWH) experience a higher cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Yet, traditional algorithms are often used to estimate CVD risk. We evaluated the performance of 4 commonly used algorithms.Setting: The Netherlands.Methods: We used data from 16,070 PLWH aged > 18 years, who were in care between 2000 and 2016, had no pre-existing CVD, had initiated first combination antiretroviral therapy >1 year ago, and had available data on CD4 count, smoking status, cholesterol, and blood pressure. Predictive performance of 4 algorithms [Data Collection on Adverse Effects of Anti-HIV Drugs Study (D: A: D); Systematic COronary Risk Evaluation adjusted for national data (SCORE-NL); Framingham CVD Risk Score (FRS); and American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association Pooled Cohort Equations (PCE)] was evaluated using a Kaplan-Meier approach. Model discrimination was assessed using Harrell's C-statistic. Calibration was assessed using observed-versusexpected ratios, calibration plots, and Greenwood-Nam-D'Agostino goodness-of-fit tests.Results: All algorithms showed acceptable discrimination (Harrell's C-statistic 0.73-0.79). On a population level, D: A: D, SCORE-NL, and PCE slightly underestimated, whereas FRS slightly overestimated CVD risk (observed-versus-expected ratios 1.35, 1.38, 1.14, and 0.92, respectively). D: A: D, FRS, and PCE best fitted our data but still yielded a statistically significant lack of fit (Greenwood-Nam-D'Agostino chi(2) ranged from 24.57 to 34.22, P Conclusions: All algorithms perform reasonably well in PLWH, with SCORE-NL performing poorest. Prediction algorithms are useful for clinical practice, but clinicians should be aware of their limitations (ie, lack of fit and slight underestimation of CVD risk in low-risk groups).

Contains fulltext : 185645.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) The effect of fenamates on gap junctional intercellular communication was investigated in monolayers of normal rat kidney (NRK) fibroblasts and of SKHep1 cells overexpressing the gap junction protein connexin43 (Cx43). Using two different methods to study gap junctional intercellular communication, single electrode voltage-clamp step response measurements and dye microinjection, we show that fenamates are reversible blockers of Cx43-mediated intercellular communication. After adding fenamates to a confluent monolayer of electrically coupled NRK fibroblasts, the voltage step-induced capacitive current transient changed from a transient characteristic for charging multiple coupled cell capacitances to one characteristic for a single cell in isolation. The capacitance of completely uncoupled cells was 19.7 +/- 1.0 pF (mean +/- S.E.M.; n = 11). Junctional conductance between the patched cell and the surrounding cells in the monolayer changed from >140.7 +/- 9.6 nS (mean +/- S.E.M.; n = 14) to 51.8 +/- 4.2 nS (mean +/- S.E.M.; n = 11) by washout of the fenamates. Voltage-clamp step response measurements showed that the potency of fenamates in inhibiting electrical coupling decreases in the order meclofenamic acid > niflumic acid > flufenamic acid. The half-maximal concentration determined by dye-coupling experiments was 25 and 40 microM for meclofenamic acid and flufenamic acid, respectively. Inhibition of gap junctional communication by fenamates did not involve changes in intracellular calcium or pH, and was unrelated to protein kinase C activity or an inhibition of cyclooxygenase activity. Voltage-clamp step response measurements in confluent monolayers of SKHep1 cells that had been stably transfected with Cx43 revealed that fenamates are potent blockers of Cx43-mediated intercellular communication. In conclusion, fenamates represent a novel class of reversible gap junction blockers that can be used to study the role of Cx43-mediated gap junctional intercellular communication in biological processes.

Abstract

A high rate of teachers' sickness absence is supposed to affect the quality of education within schools in a negative way. In the period 1978-88 teacher absenteeism showed a considerable increase in The Netherlands, especially in primary education. Differences between schools in teacher sickness absence are remarkable. The question is whether teacher absenteeism is related to school climate and teachers' sense of efficacy in primary schools. These factors are selected because it can be assumed that they play a central role in the effectiveness of school development programmes aimed at driving back absenteeism figures. School climates of low absenteeism schools and high absenteeism schools are compared, and teachers' sense of efficacy is related to absenteeism figures concerning individual teachers. Several school climate characteristics turn out to be strongly related to absenteeism scores at the school level. Teachers' outcome expectancy is related to individual teacher absenteeism scores. Recommendations are discussed as to what a school manager might do if sickness abscence is recognised as a problem in the school. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Regional differences in the lateral mobility properties of plasma membrane lipids were studied in unfertilized and fertilized Xenopus eggs by fluorescence photobleaching recovery (FPR) measurements. Out of a variety of commonly used lipid probes only the aminofluorescein- -1abelled fatty acids HEDAF (5-(N-hexadecanoyl)- aminofluorescein) and TEDAF (5-(N-tetradecanoyl)-aminofluorescein) appear to distribute itself in the plasma membrane. Under all experimental conditions used these molecules show partial recovery upon photobleaching, indicating the existence of lipidic microdomains.
